Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement edit

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Dear Geugeor,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Copyright edit

George.

Merci

Anthere (talk) 16:14, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Anthere (talk) 18:29, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Normally, a permission email has been sent to OTRS for all those images. I took GREAT lengths (on this page and by email) to explain him how to deal with that with the photographer of those images. Either the email sending went wrong, or the OTRS permission has not been managed yet. I will check if the email was properly received by OTRS. Anthere (talk) 10:18, 16 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Inappropriate claim of "Own work" edit

Hi Geugeor,

I trust you are fine. I noticed that several images you uploaded here on Commons needs permission from the photographers that took those images. The permission should be sent to our support team. "Own work" on Wikimedia Commons implies work you explicitly created yourself. The fact that you appear on a photo/newspaper or organize the event where the images were taken does not make the images your own work. Please, correctly attribute these works and ask the photographers to send permission to COM:OTRS. For example, you uploaded File:WomensTraining7.jpg as "own work". This cannot be uploaded as "own work" since you are not the one who took the image. In fact "Own work" means "I'm the copyright holder of the work". Well, I'll take a look again next week, and would probably consider a COM:DR if the issue is not addressed. Regards. Wikicology (talk) 17:35, 14 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Africa edit

The Wiki Loves Africa 2017 photographic contest is officially closed. Thank you all for your participation !

This year, the photographic competition has resulted in an amazing 18,294 image uploads to Commons around the theme People at Work.
International winners have been announced !!! Check it out on Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2017/Winners. Congratulations to winners and all those who participated and organised events. More national winners are yet to be announced.
Please follow us on Facebook to know more and stay informed next year.

There are several fun ways you can help us to make the impact of Wiki Loves Africa stronger:

  • Add more categories to your images so that people will find them to use them in articles ... you can see how to do this here: Quick Guide to Categories on Commons
  • Improve the images description to make them easier to understand and reuse.
  • Add your image to a relevant Wikipedia article, i.e. if your image shows a tailor sewing, then add the image to an article on Sewing or Tailors - this allows readers to see different global perspectives of a universal subject. You can see how to do this here: How to insert images into Wikipedia using WikiText
  • If there is no article that reflects the subject of your images, then start an article about that subject. If you are a new editor, you can see how to do that here: Creating your first article
  • Add more images - you can add more images or media that reflect interesting and encyclopedic subjects in your immediate community.
  • Use the images produced during the contest. Here is a short link to the best ones : c:Category:Best images from Wiki Loves Africa 2017

We look forward to seeing your contributions!!

Warmest,

Anthere for the Wiki Loves Africa Team

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Tableau King Akwa.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hello EugeneZelenko, I apologize for my very long silence that led you to the deletion of all the photos. Please how to recover them? Currently, I have no copy and it is in the context of the contest https://fr.vikidia.org/wiki/Projet:WikiChallenge_Ecoles_d%27Afrique whose deliberations will be made in the days to come.

Thank you for telling me what needs to be done so that the images are restored or corrected.

Source is claimed to be Collection Ecole publique Joss 2 au Cameroun, author - Ecole publique Joss 2. It's necessary to ask copyrights holder(s) to send permission(s) to Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review and images undeletion. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:24, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you!

Hello Geugeor, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Artisanat Mboum.webm

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Très cordialement, --Geugeor (talk) 08:29, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cordialement, — Racconish💬 08:47, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cordialement, — Racconish💬 13:43, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Study shows Wiki Love Africa recruitment makes a difference edit

Hello Geugeor

We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !

This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.

We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.

If you have any questions about the study, we encourage you to ask CAT Lab's research manager Juliakamin(cs).
