Image:Pope Paul II.jpg edit

The photo was retrieved from w:Pope John Paul II in wikipedia. I guess I don't understand something here...Please take a moment out of your busy day to explain so I don't make the same time wasting error again --HiFlyer 23:20, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

First, please excuse me for my poor english. Ok, here some explanations. Commons is a repository for free content only, that means by example that the author of the picture authorized it to be released under CC-By-SA or GFDL license. Or that there is no right attached on the content of the picture nor on the picture itself (Public domain). When you upload some picture on commons, check that the content is free, add the source (selfmade, taken on wikipedia en:, etc) and the licence of the image according to the source, upload the better resolution possible (not the thumbnail version) Then you have to place the image in a category (browse categories from the main page) or to use it in a description page. You can find more details here : Commons:First steps and there : Commons:Community Portal
For this image : the source is w:en:Image:Ioannes_Paulus_PP._II.jpg, but you can see there it's fair use, thus not a picture for commons : Fair use is not Free content.
Feel free to ask more questions on Commons:Village pump, or on IRC. Cheers —FoeNyx 11:44, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Linking Images edit

Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 01:28, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi - Please note that the commons do not allow images under the fair use clause, so the above image will have to be deleted (can you find out when exactly it was taken? If it was before 1932, it would be PD-old). Have a look at Commons:Licensing for more info. Thanks -- Duesentrieb 18:01, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hello, HiFlyer!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
