• Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Hello, Jane023!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:HopeHouse.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. -- Bryan (talk to me) 11:02, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Note: Jane023 (talk · contribs) restored the image which was original deleted as copyvio, without waiting for a response. I was going to restore the image and send to DR, which I have just done anyway. Discussion is here Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Kaart-haarlem.JPG. -- I am curious as to why you did not simply wait for a response from myself or another administrator? Cirt (talk) 18:04, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
Clicking on a purge tab would not undelete an entry. If we are talking about this particular image then from your edit summary you clearly chose to re-upload the image. Am I incorrect? And if not, why did you do so without first waiting for feedback from an administrator? Cirt (talk) 18:50, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Image:Kaart-haarlem.JPG - This image should be visible to you now. You uploaded it the first time on 14:13, 3 January 2008 with no edit summary, just the description of the image itself. It was tagged as copyvio by Mcke (talk · contribs) and I deleted it as copyvio. You uploaded it a second time at 09:56, 31 August 2008 with the comment: I don't think this file should be deleted, neither do I feel that I have infringed on a copyright violation, because the picture I took is in the public space, attached to the side of a shower building for watersporters. Pedestrian traffic passes the building. I can upload a larger image which shows the building in its entirety, but the map itself I found interesting as it shows some major touristic attractions. In principle all works communicated to the public by or on behalf of the public authorities (government) are not copyright protected in the Netherlands, unless the copyright has been reserved explicitly, either in a general manner by law, decree or ordinance, or in a specific case by a notice on the work itself or at the communication to the public. I am also surprised that the file has been deleted without nomination. - Jane023 - So, in summary, you uploaded it once, it got deleted as copyvio, you knew it was deleted as copyvio, you asked me on my talk page about it, did not wait to hear for a response, and went ahead and uploaded a suspected copyvio image a second time. Please in the future wait to hear back for a response from an administrator instead of re-uploading an image that was deleted with the rationale of copyvio. Thank you, Cirt (talk) 19:43, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

You have still not acknowledged that you first uploaded the image on 3 January 2008, and then again a second time on 31 August 2008 after it was deleted. Is my statement above about the chronology of your uploads of that image incorrect? Cirt (talk) 21:31, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi Cirt, I can acknowlege that I and only I uploaded the image, and I and only I wrote the comment you have listed above. The scenario was slightly different, in that I think you were actually the third person I contacted. I don't know if you noticed, the problem is with two pictures, not just Image:Kaart-haarlem.JPG, but also Image:Het-geheim-van-holland.JPG. I just uploaded a larger image Image:Douche-gravenstenebrug-haarlem.JPG ‎that shows both in their original context. Hopefully this will shed some light on the matter. Jane023 (talk) 21:39, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
So yes, you acknowledge that you did upload the image after you saw it was deleted as suspected copyio instead of waiting to hear back from an administrator? Cirt (talk) 21:51, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi Cirt, No, as I stated before, I only uploaded the image once last year. You seem to feel I uploaded a second version, but I did't. I have only tried my best to follow the advice of all the links to make an undeletion request, which is quite confusing for me. I certainly hope you can help me out here. If not and the image has been damaged, then I can re-upload the image. Jane023 (talk) 20:05, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

It appears I made a mistake in my assessment - you recreated the page where the image was located by adding your comment, but did not re-upload the image itself. I am going to take a break from this issue and defer to whatever is the outcome of Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Kaart-haarlem.JPG. Cirt (talk) 20:26, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Wiki Takes HaarlemEdit

Multichill (talk) 12:40, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Interessant! Ik vroeg me af hoe de coordinates bijkwamen! Ik heb me opgegeven.Jane023 (talk) 15:28, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
  1. Voegt de bot de meest specifieke Rijksmonumenten in... categorie toe
  2. Voegt de bot de meest specifieke gebouw categorie toe (churches in Haarlem, houses in Haarlem)
Coster, designed by Romeyn de Hooghe.jpg). Thank you.

Category:Pieter_de_NeynEdit

Category discussion notification Category:Pieter_de_Neyn has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Same question in more than one placeEdit

Generally most Commons denizens, and particularly the Administrators, work very hard at being helpful to newbies. We react badly, however, when people ask essentially the same question in more than one place as you have done at

  • The Help Desk -- PD-US-not renewed (Netherlands) and
  • Commons:Deletion requests/File:Herman Heijenbroek - jj Beijnes - werkplaats Haarlem- 1938.jpg

Please be assured that your images will not be deleted until and unless there has been a thorough examination of the issues and the licenses have been found wanting. Please don't shop for answers in more than one place, as it simply wastes time of other Commons users to answer the same question twice.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:23, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, but believe me, I am certainly not being creative in my responses here! I only placed the inquiry at the Commons helpdesk after being requested to do this via email received this morning through the OTRS procedure. Jane023 (talk) 12:25, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Category:Painters from the NetherlandsEdit

Hi there,

Again on painters from the Netherlands: I got some feedback on the new category scheme from User:Foroa. According to this user some of the categories are too specialised and too deep. For example users who are looking for Rembrandt have to work their way through several countries at the moment. Maybe this user has a point. So I was thinking about moving some of the subcategories (like Category:Rembrandt) up one level. So in effect that would mean that categories like Category:Renaissance painters from the Northern Netherlands, Category:Dutch Golden Age painters and Category:18th-century painters from the Northern Netherlands would disappear. The end-result would look something like Category:Draughtsmen from the Southern Netherlands (before 1830). Just one super category containing just names. Do you think that's a good idea or are there any of these categories you wouldn't like to see go?

Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 13:00, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Vincent, as long as I can still see and understand what you're doing, I can live with any decision you take. Having proceeded to work with what we have so far, I get sometimes confused myself. Doing this will make it more difficult to see who was a colleague of whom, but I don't think most people tried using the cats on commons anyway. Most people view the pictures through their native-language Wikipedia. It will be easier to administer lists of names and hopefully easier to track doubles. Are you going to keep the century categories like Category:17th-century painters from the Netherlands? Because I guess you can put all the DGA ones in there. I am not sure where the Southern border to France is now though! Jane023 (talk) 13:32, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
I was thinking of only keeping Category:Early Netherlandish painters, because they are so similar in style and the Netherlands weren't divided in north and south back then. For the sake of 'easier navigation' I would like to put all the others in two main categories: Category:Painters from the Southern Netherlands (before 1830) and Category:Painters from the Northern Netherlands (before 1815). So yes, DGA painters would go, but also "17th century painters from the Netherlands". Vincent Steenberg (talk) 14:03, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
I think the Netherlands were not considered divided until well after 1830 (and I think most Americans still don't get it and see Belgium & Holland as one country). When I look at Category:17th-century painters there are a bunch of subcategories in there and I think one for the Flemish painters would be handy. I think it helps to have a few categories based on time periods. I have given up though trying to make sense out of categories like Mannerism and Baroque as time periods. I am also confused by the 15-year gap between 1815-1830. I think it should all be 1830 since you can only split them once. And then the split into two official countries that still exist today is of course after 1830 and not before. So my logical choice would be to lose the split before 1830, since that causes confusion - there were lots of painters who moved around a lot in the 17th century, working on large projects for various courts, and they are mostly considered Flemish, not Dutch. Jane023 (talk) 14:41, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
ok, so basically you want to keep Category:Dutch Golden Age painters and rename it to something more suitable. That's ok with me. What about Category:Renaissance painters from the Northern Netherlands and Category:18th-century painters from the Northern Netherlands? Should I keep those as well? And yes, you're right. 1830 is better than having two dates. I will keep that in mind from now on. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 17:28, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
Well I think it may be useful to rename both renaissance cats to 16th century Netherlandish (that correctly leaves Early Neth to refer to 15th, 14th and earlier). I noticed several people using Early Neth for 16th century, which now is supposed to be "renaissance" while lots of it is early Baroque. Then you get the 17th century which could be 17th century Flemish - what do you think about that? Then 18th century Flemish, 19th century Flemish, and then after 1830 Dutch or Belgian. The trick is choosing between Netherlandish or Flemish as terms. I interpret Netherlandish as starting in Northern France all the way to Strassbourg and up to Denmark. I suppose that is too wide an area however. What do you think? Jane023 (talk) 07:49, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
That's fine I think. As long as Category:Painters from the Southern Netherlands (before 1830) is kept. I am aware that the term "Flemish" is much more widespread than the term "Southern Netherlandish", but the term "Flemish" remains problematic as it is an anachronism and excludes the French-speaking people. But a category like "17th century painters from Flanders" might be easier to understand than "Baroque painters from the Southern Netherlands".
About Early Netherlandish painters, don't forget that I made a sort of objective definition of those (born before 1490). So far this works fine, so I don't think this category needs to be changed.
About the definition of the Netherlands, I would say the en:Seventeen Provinces plus Liège. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 18:45, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Hmm. The seventeen provinces is fine, one needs to draw the line somewhere. The difference of language is interesting. From about 1560 onwards, French was spoken by the majority of the inhabitants of Haarlem, and even during the Spanish occupation until 1572 the official language was French. It wasn't until the 1640's that Dutch started making a comeback in official documents, but Haarlem still has a French Walloon church dating from that period. I don't think that Flemish means "not French speaking", except in the Netherlands, and again that's because of the sensitivity of the Belgians. I guess I am not quite clear on what you really want; do you want to keep the separation line French-speaking/Dutch-speaking in two big categories from born 1490-1810 and drop the century time periods? Or do you want to drop the geographical categories and keep just century categories? Jane023 (talk) 21:28, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

I was more thinking about the present situation in Belgium. Calling Rubens a Flemish painter is one thing, but calling a 17th-century Liegois painter Flemish is another. My initial proposal was to keep two main categories (Category:Painters from the Northern Netherlands (before 1815) and Category:Painters from the Southern Netherlands (before 1830)) without any time periods. My question was if that is ok, or if you want to keep categories by period. I take it from your response that you do. Is that right? Vincent Steenberg (talk) 16:16, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

OK I get it now. The strange thing is that I am a heavy category user, but I gave up on categories as a tracking tool and I keep my own lists now, which I assume you do too. I have no problem with lots of categories, but I don't really need them. When I see categories split into countries, I tend to add the Netherlands in there. If you feel this is too many, then I'll stop doing that. So what you propose now then is to have these two big categories (North vs South) stretching from birthyear 1490 to approximately 1810? I'm OK with that. Jane023 (talk) 17:03, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
ok, great. Then I'll work towards that from now on. Thanks a lot. Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 17:29, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Photo CreditsEdit

Hello Jane,

I hope I am doing this right as I have never contacted someone via Wikipedia before. I work for a lifestyle magazine and we would like to use one of your images of Haarlem. However, we would like to credit you under your real name rather than your username. Could you perhaps contact me via Email at stutz@tas-lifestylemagazin.de and let me know how we should credit you? We'd need the information by next week. :-)

all the best, Rebecca

Tasmanier (talk) 09:10, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Rebecca, I sent you a response by mail to the address you mentioned. The proper way to credit my photos is with "Jane023, CC-BY-SA", unless it's an old photo that I uploaded under the GNU license. I believe those older licenses require adding a lot more information to the attribution (like the entire text of the license) so if that's not OK, then let me know and I will just change the license. My *intention* is to post everything here in such a way as to make it as easy as possible for other people to reuse, which I have now come to understand is best represented with the license called CC-BY-SA.

Category:Huishoudschool VoorhelmstraatEdit

Hartelijke groet, Picasdre (talk) 09:04, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Hartelijke groet terug! Hi Jane, I've noticed the Creative Commons license you granted for that image of an old book. There is however an official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain, and that claims to the contrary represent an assault on the very concept of a public domain". That means that photographs of two-dimensional works, where the artwork itself is no longer copyrighted, should always be free of copyright too. So you might want to replace the license with PD-art-100. Regards, De728631 (talk) 18:10, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

You're quite right. Feel free to update the whole category to reflect pd-old or whatever. I uploaded those with the same communist tool I use for my own photo's and it looks like I forgot to adjust the license. Jane023 (talk) 09:51, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote.

If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

Valued Image PromotionEdit

Your nomination has been reviewed and promoted
Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope:
Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 138.
If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.

--Vera (talk) 09:12, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I already saw the nomination and the reason why. I will try to get a picture of the burned-out situation to illustrate how tragic it is. Jane023 (talk) 09:44, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
You could fotograph nr. 148 and 132 while you're there. Or maybe you would be putting them at risk that way if you're superstitious. ;P --Vera (talk) 13:05, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Gebruik van foto van de KaatsbaanEdit

Jane,

<td style="vertical-align: top">
<a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haarlem_-_kaatsbaan.jpg"><img border="0"
src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/ce/Haarlem_-_kaatsbaan.jpg/100px-Haarlem_-_kaatsbaan.jpg"/></a></td>

Category:Tulip maniaEdit

Unfortunately, "Category:Tulip mania" seems to be redundant and duplicative of previously-existing "Category:Tulipomania"... AnonMoos (talk) 14:57, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, but Tulip Mania is the more common version of the name. I was trying to find out where "Tulipomania" comes from, as I agree, they should be merged. Jane023 (talk) 15:06, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Both are OK, but only one is needed, and Tulipomania was established first, and is perhaps the internationally most common form. The fact that the English Wikipedia article is "Tulip mania" doesn't automatically mean that the Commons category needs to be identical in name... AnonMoos (talk) 21:32, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Again, I agree, but I noticed the category is filled with non-Haarlem pictures, whereas "Tulip mania" refers specifically to the local stockjobbing market crash in the town of Haarlem. Tulipomania is more general term referring to other city exchanges, all based on The Tulipomania chapter in Charles Mackay's 1841 book. The two should not be considered the same, as one is based on on-going research into archives, and the other is frozen in time and space in 1841. Jane023 (talk) 10:02, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

On reflection (also considering the paintings in the Frans Hals Museum), I think maybe the Tulip Mania category should be renamed to "Tulip Mania, Haarlem". Tulipomania is just too big to fix. Jane023 (talk) 09:27, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 openEdit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in KürzeEdit

Hallo Jane023,

( Bernd Gross, 16. August 2014)

depends how you calculate the age; by date of design or date of impression. The exhibition where I took pictures was a chronological overview of their Dutch banknotes. Jane023 (talk) 07:48, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Image licence removalEdit

During a history check I discovers that with this edit you removed the licence tag from the image. In future please be a little more careful and check your edits for errors such as this because it caused the image to appear in the category Category:Media without a license: needs history check and could have been deleted for lack of a licence. It just causes more unnecessary work for other editors. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 16:40, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. Jane023 (talk) 17:43, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Don't Coreference Disambiguation pagesEdit

Hi Jane! I noticed you've matched to quite a lot of Wikimedia disambiguation pages on https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/

I think that's wrong:

  • Eg Sandrart:Flavius Sabinus should not be matched to Titus Flavius Sabinus because that's a disambiguation page. Instead, you should read the disambiguation page and Sandrart (it says "Zollerheber in Asia und Geldverleiher bei den Helvetiern; vgl. Neue Pauly, Bd. IV, Sp. 550" but I don't grok German), and pick one of the persons only.
  • Eg you matched RKD artists:Il Bambaia and RKD artists:Bambaia to Bambaia.
    • Both of these are disambiguation pages in RKD that say "See: Busti, Agostino". The Wikipedia disambiguation page "Bambaia" also lists Agostino Busti, and clearly that's the correct match. So you should match to Agostino Busti
    • I'm not sure it's useful to match RKD disambiguation pages to anything, really. We should match persons to persons, not disambiguation pages to disambiguation pages.

--Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 18:47, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Vladimir, thanks for looking at Mix-n-Match. The problem you are seeing is a problem with the downloaded database from RKD. There is no way to just download the actual entries, so all of the doubles (what you call "rkd disambiguation pages") are in the downloaded copy.
I'm now writing to Magnus: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mix%27n%27match#Filter_out_Disambiguation_entries_and_Un-notable_Persons
Though I agree that we would ideally only want one unique rkd id number to link to one unique q number, the reality is messier than that. Matching in Mix-n-Match is not easy, but any match is better than none.
A correct match is better than none. How did you know RKD's "Bambaia" is the same as Wikidata's "Bambaia" unless you opened both pages and read about it? Then you'll see RKD's is really about Agostino Busti https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q395600, and not the disambig page you matched
Also, we would ideally want all spellings that have pages in the rkd to be listed in the ALTNAMES list of the q number.
Yes, but just linking disambigs leaves the ALTNAMES deeply hiden. I did add "Il Bambaia" to Agostino Busti (and "Bambaia" was already there, in another language)
I am not sure what you were looking at that you stumbled across my matches. Are you looking at Mix-N-Match or at Wikidata through queries? Jane023 (talk) 18:54, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Mix-n-match has a tab called "Disambiguations", I looked at it. Cheers! Vladimir

Vladimir, I don't open both pages before matching, but go from the meta data displayed. If the metadata displayed is incorrect, which does happen occasionally, this is usually because between the moment that the rkd database was loaded into Mix-N-Match and the moment of the match, something has changed on the side of the automatically matched q number. Spot checking these shows that it is actually quite rare. I am flattered you think I could open two records for each match but I have done tens of thousands of these just by clicking through the Mix-n-Match screen. I only occasionally open the links. Jane023 (talk) 19:30, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

So in this case you matched based on name only? But names are very often ambiguous! A brief example: in this ULAN id violation report, most of the equal names are different people (eg Charles Bridges (Q5075775) vs Charles Bridges (Q18641990)) --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 07:27, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Don't worry, I am well aware of the ambiguity of name-spellings. I apologize for not documenting each matching decision. Please be aware that changes in the data can go two ways: Wikipedia pages that once were articles can become disambigs, and so forth. In this particular instance I have no idea. I also don't think it's important enough to dissect. Jane023 (talk) 10:09, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Also, though I am a very active Mix-n-Matcher for both rkd and ULAN, I am not the only matcher, though on any given "sync" request from Mix-n-Match that I make, it may appear as if I was the matcher, because the bulk update to Wikidata was made in my name. Jane023 (talk) 10:12, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
I'm looking at the user name for each match in mix-n-match. My thinking is that a wrong match is harmful since the error will easily be propagated.
The only way to make sure a match is correct is to examine more data about the person, which will necessarily lead you to a real person page. Eg look at ULAN coref data (potential match/mismatch is recorded by their editors): that's good data that gives you some basis for decision. A name alone does not. --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 19:39, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
Well actually for women it often does! You would be surprised how few women are in Wikidata at all that match up to anything in the ULAN with a female name. If they're not a female sports hero or actress, they can probably be matched on name alone. I do however check these in Wikidata, because generally I am able to add a few more properties to the Wikidata item based on the linked Wikipedia article. Sorry if I still haven't answered your questions enough but I guess I still am a bit unclear about what you are trying to achieve exactly. If you just want to complain that my matching ability is not 100% accurate, then I guess I can't help you very much. I still don't believe it's necessary to open both links on each match in order to create a good working system of interlinked databases. Jane023 (talk) 07:28, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Females in RKDartists matchedEdit

Hi Jane, a question about this graph https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Females_in_matched_RKDartists.jpg I was wondering, did you also add the RKD ID's to these wikipages in Authority control?

BotsEdit

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Der WLM-Countdown hat begonnenEdit

Hallo Jane023,

( Bernd Gross, 6. August 2015)

Pieter de HoochEdit

Hi Jane. I just discovered your work on Pieter de Hooch. Great, great job. Thank you! Olivier (talk) 21:00, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

I should rephrase: this is amazing! As you know, I had done this, but since we talked about it, I still don't have a Catalogue Raisonné about de Hooch. Olivier (talk) 21:06, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! Of course I used all of your work, so you can go ahead and take credit for half the job. I only picked De Hooch because you made it so easy. I don't have a catalog about him either, but I just borrowed the Peter C. Sutton from my local library. --Jane023 (talk) 06:55, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
Glad to hear that you built upon what I had done, and even more glad to see that we now have a great list of de Hooch's works available. Talking about de Hooch, maybe you could contribute your knowledge at Commons:Categories for discussion/2015/09/Category:Portrait of a Family Playing Music: as I see it, it is pretty much about naming, and a painting can have many names. Not sure which one is the most appropriate in this case. Olivier (talk) 14:52, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Wikipedia Signpost/2016-01-06/In the mediaEdit

@Jane023: your page caught my eye for the above reason as well as for your cultural interests. It is clear Wiki is not succeeding as well as it might in certain Arab countries, so I suggest in view that the Lord Mayor of London is to visit UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain next week qv. http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/about-the-city/the-lord-mayor/Pages/overseas-business-visits.aspx that Wiki provides a quick résumé on ويكيبيديا العربية of the Lord Mayor of London before he arrives. This can do no harm since he is to be an honoured guest, but it would serve the function of seeing what reach Wiki has in those countries.

I say this only because many other topics seem to cause controversy in one way or another, so a description of his name, function etc in Arabic presumably along even briefer lines than the Anne Hidalgo article surely could not go amiss before Lord Mountevans arrives in the Middle East next week? Glam helpEdit

Hey Jane,

I'm a Brazilian volunteer here, and some BRs are starting some GLAM projects, I made a request to enter in mailing outreach:GLAM/Mailing lists, however I think you could help me, nowadays, how you are doing massive uploads here ? Some bot? GLAM toolset? Thanks for the attention. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton 22:08, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Dear Rodrigo, Pattypan might be one of the options. Vysotsky (talk) 23:50, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes I agree with Vysotsky, Rodrigo -- I used to use a little tool called commonist for my own photographs too, but haven't done so in years. Today I have a little "basic upload" button that I use a lot for paintings that is in my commons.js file. I took a GLAM toolset course once but never successfully got the permission to use it. You can sign up to the open mailing list "GLAM" on Outreach and the closed one as a Wikimedian-GLAMista of course, so I approved your request on the signup page outreach:GLAM/Mailing lists. Good luck and it's too bad you are blocked on the Brazilian Wikipedia - if you have any knowledge of Listeria then please try to push the Portuguese bot access request through for ListeriaBot here: pt:Wikipédia:Robôs/Pedidos de aprovação/ListeriaBot. It's been stuck in limbo for months now. Thx Jane023 (talk) 05:53, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
