"others"

Jarekt,

Would you clarify what you mean with "others" at Category_talk:Ships_by_name#Poll_on_the_visibility_of_this_category_on_subcategories? . It seems that most if not all others than SJu and the non-contributing participant seem to share my view (see Category_talk:Ships_by_name#Hiddencat). Further, would you participate in the poll?

Happy New Year. --  Docu  at 14:06, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Docu, By others I meant all the other people really confused by that discussion. I usually reserve HIDDENCAT for maintenance categories added by template. Also most HIDDEN categories should not be counted if trying to identify uncategorized pages. In Category_talk:Ships_by_name#Poll_on_the_visibility_of_this_category_on_subcategories, Category_talk:Ships_by_name#Hiddencat and many other discussions over the years, you seem be the main driving force to add HIDDENCAT to categories which I do not think should be hidden. If not for any other reason, because it confuses people. By "others" I meant User:Rd232 here and user:Trycatch on Category:People by name who was having the same discussion. To me those should be flat non-hidden categories. By the way, thanks for your efforts to keep those categories FLAT, at least on that front we can definitely join forces. Cheers --Jarekt (talk) 13:01, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
I agree with Trycatch on the other category too: it is a question to ask and answer (which was done). This doesn't help with the discussion though.
As noted everywhere, the category still remains visible.
You had already mentioned Rd232, so I suppose you just agree with Foroa and Stunteltje who seem to favor the carriage return before the category name. The later two actually contribute to the category structure where as the former just seemed to have been confused about a feature he didn't know about (see Category_talk:Ships_by_name#Hiddencat for details). --  Docu  at 13:22, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
I think I missed the discussion about "carriage return before the category name", so I have no opinion on that topic. I also understand and agree that in this case hidden category still remains visible. However I still prefer it not hidden because I generally do not look through "Non-topical/index" line of categories, when category is not added by a bot. I also do not care that much about it, except how much time is wasted discussing this topic. Cheers. --Jarekt (talk) 04:21, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

File:IDFraidAWARTA.JPG

May I drag your attentions to this file?

  • The original description is "Typical home in Awarta, after the Israeli troops have raided it, for the 4th time. In this home they arrested (detained) all the 5 remaining brothers. The family was "suspect", as one (unarmed) brother had been killed by Itamar settlers in 2002." I suggest a NPOV description "Home in Awarta, after the Israeli troops have searched it.".
  • The file obviously does not belong to Category:Israel Defense Forces. NatanFlayer (talk) 13:43, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
Natan, the commons policy is "no NPOV", see Commons:Project scope/Neutral point of view. I think the original file description was fine. I usually like descriptions to provide context info, beyond what is visible in the image. --Jarekt (talk) 03:37, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
What about the category? IP-users tend to place it in Category:Israel Defense Forces. NatanFlayer (talk) 18:48, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
I blocked IP edits of that file. If there is more issues with that file I might fully protect it. I added Category:Israeli presence in the West Bank. Natan, If you observe any other edit wars in related categories, especially by IPs, let me know and I will try to stop them. Cheers. --Jarekt (talk) 19:23, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Inductiveload's enWS VIAF gadget

Just thought that I would wave the flag to you about the gadget that Inductiveload built and is trialling at enWS. We have been stealing the {{Authority control}} componetns and looking to how we can align, and this is one of the results. Have a poke at s:en:Wikisource:Scriptorium#VIAF Authority control data gadget  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:22, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

You haven't commented, however, Inductiveload has done updates and it now works very sweetly to offer choice and add the template, either when editing or from the display of the page itself.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:35, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
I do not know much about gadgets but is that something that could be transplanted to commons? --Jarekt (talk) 13:43, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it is relatively easy to use at Commons with some tweaks. User:Inductiveload/addVIAFdata.js contains the code ready for Commons. It could do with a bit of test-driving to make sure things like finding existing templates and adding templates to pages work as expected. I've made a few test edits and it seems OK. It should work on Creator: pages and mainspace pages. Inductiveload (talk) 01:05, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

SVG source tag

Hi, Jarkt. Would you please explain more about this edit? I hardly understand why you did that. (Or should I reconsider where I put my tags in the future?) Fleet Command (talk) 07:49, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Fleet Command, I agree that edit was a mistake and I undid it. What I was working on was incorrect use of other_fields parameter of the {{Information}} template for adding {{ValidSVG}}, which were done without using {{Information field}} template. Sorry about this. --Jarekt (talk) 12:54, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

WGA uploads

Any idea why File:Bacchiacca - Baptism of Christ with Saints - WGA01095.jpg has incorrect WGA links (same theme but a different painting ? The depicted artwork is here but I cannot find the ID. --Zolo (talk) 21:28, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

I fixed the links after looking it up in the spreadsheet found here. My guess is that WGA website changed when painting by the same author with the same title showed up. --Jarekt (talk) 21:41, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
By the way the ID shown was related to line in the spreadsheet file, which seem to be changing, so I will no longer show it. I should probably upload all the files added to the website, but it might be a big job to figure out what is new. --Jarekt (talk) 21:47, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok thanks. We have already many useful file, moreover, their metadata are apparently not always as good as they seem. I have already found several that were several decades outdated, so it would probably be better to get the files directly from the museums (at least for museums that have good databases, that is mostly American museums).--Zolo (talk) 13:09, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Collapsing Flickr data

Hi,

Quite a few of my past uploads have Flickr data of the type your bot is currently collapsing (e.g. File:Lusitania 1907 2.jpg‎). Is there a general consensus about tucking information into collapsed boxes that you can point me to? The Wikipedia consensus is to avoid doing this due to potentially unpredictable display problems in different browsers or mobile devices. If there is a consensus I could build it into the script I use for reviewing Flickr images.

By the way, a minor correction, your bot is saying "Uploded" rather than "Uploaded" and "Public Domains" rather than "Public Domain". Thanks -- (talk) 13:45, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

I was responding to this request. I was under impression that collapsible templates are a standard on Commons: there are 456k uses of collapsible Category:Creator templates and 277k uses of collapsible Category:Institution templates. We do not have much complains about their collapsibility. I was only running on "Ruslan" files removing author, moving date and hiding the flickr metadata. I agree that we should not delete this metadata, but I was hiding it since it is mostly irrelevant. I will correct the typos (I can not spell correctly in any language), although "Public Domains" typo was not mine but copied from flicker. --Jarekt (talk) 14:02, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

PD-scan

Thank you for adding the parameter. Can you please have a look at {{PD-Art}} and {{PD-Art-two}} as well? De728631 (talk) 20:04, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello. I assume that JarektBot is ur bot. Is it possible that the Category:Images from NOAA gets the template:Check categories again after they got categorized? Regards --Chris.urs-o (talk) 13:41, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

I Will look into it again. I did remove bunch of {{Check categories}} in the past, but it is still quite a manual process:

File:Wea00342 - Flickr - NOAA Photo Library.jpg

Hello, apparently you tried to replace this file with File:BenFranklin_Waterspout_1806.jpg, but the command to the bot got the wrong way around. --Hydrox (talk) 21:28, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

That is strange. I will universally replace File:Wea00342 - Flickr - NOAA Photo Library.jpg with File:BenFranklin_Waterspout_1806.jpg. --Jarekt (talk) 01:14, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Francis de Laporte de Castelnau

Hi, this is Francis de Laporte de Castelnau, not Francis de Lapouge de Castelnau. I can rename the creator, but it may be better if the bot corrects it that in the file: "Lapouge" does not seem to be a valid alternative name. By the way, will you have time to see about the Bundesarchiv thing ?--Zolo (talk) 20:58, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! I though I was coping and pasting, so I do not know where the typo come from. I will fix it. I am still planning to work on Bundesarchiv after i am dome with interwikis. I am done with all categories and most galleries. I will also try templates, and some of the smaller namespaces. --Jarekt (talk) 21:11, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok. I had not thought of template interwikis, that can be useful indeed.--Zolo (talk) 21:42, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Translations

Hi Jarek, FYI, I'm working on User:Multichill/Template i18n at Translatewiki (long overdue). Once it's more readable we should move it to a more suitable location. Any suggestions? Feel free to help btw ;-) Multichill (talk) 11:55, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Great, I think that should be part of existing Commons:Localization (Which I have never seen before) or Commons:Template i18n pages. We should review and update those pages and add basic info about translatewiki. I think your page should be a sub-page of one of those pages linked from both. Current User:Multichill/Template i18n at Translatewiki is a great start, but it should also have some sections about creating new messages on translatewiki (same instructions should be on translatewiki itself) and on how to copy large volumes of translations we already have from Commons to translatewiki. --Jarekt (talk) 02:36, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Problem with your edit in Template:Other date

Hello Jarekt,

it seems your latest edit has removed some translations for the century option. For example, with a German language environment I now get “16th- century” instead of „16. Jahrhundert“. Most likely something similar happened to all other languages except English and Polish. Please try to fix or revert your edit. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 17:40, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Walters manuscript W.659

Jarekt - really we need more explanatory category names than this. Not sure what it should be in this case. I am using the style Category:Khamsa of Amir Khusraw (Walters MS 624) or (not entirely consistently) Category:Piri Reis, Kitab-ı Bahriye, Walters MS 658. Let me know if you want to discuss what the best names would be for particular MS - if I'm not on Commons en:wp talk or email is best. Johnbod (talk) 13:39, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

I was trying to come up with a better name but no name is mentioned in the files and authors name is so long, it is hard to use. My thought was that it is easier to rename category than to assemble files in the first place. And I do not want those files being added to the same categories individually. I noticed your Category:Khamsa of Amir Khusraw (Walters MS 624) style categories afterwards and I will try to use that format. --Jarekt (talk) 13:49, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it is. I'll try to come up with a name - the Walters metadata is not always entirely helpful. Btw, when a specific MS category is created, the files should be removed from the parents (a lengthy job!) - these 2,000+ categories are much too big for convenient use. Thanks, Johnbod (talk) 14:16, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
We could use some bot to fix overcategorization withing some specific category. Otherwise it is a time consuming task which is not made much easier with any of the categorization tools like Cat-a-lot, etc. I was using AutoWikiBrouwser in bot mode to do some of those. But right now my focus is on moving images out of Category:Media from the Walters Art Museum: no creator template into artist categories (also a lengthy job), but I will try to clean up some of manuscript categories. --Jarekt (talk) 14:31, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Category:Japanese Armour in the Walters Art Museum

Jarekt, what a great addition to Wiki commons, some great images but only a few of the images are actually of Japanese armour, most of the images are actually Japanese sword fittings (tosogu). Would it be possible to leave the armour images in the category and transfer the other images to a more appropriately named category such as "Category:Tosogu (Japanese sword fittings) in the Walters Art Museum" or something along that line? I have no idea how to move so many images, if you do please let me know, I would be glad to help if I can so that these images will be easier to find by interested parties. I have created a category for other images of this type located here.[[1]] Thanks, samuraiantiqueworld (talk) 02:03, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

On the top of every page, there is "My preferences", u can activate the categorization tool Cat-a-lot Cheers --Chris.urs-o (talk) 06:26, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
I see you already managed to move them. That is great. Feel free to categorize those images further by adding proper categories identifying parts, etc. for those I would not use categories with "Walters Art Museum" in the name. Since many of the images come with know names of the sword-smiths that made them, you can also help organize categories related to them. Good luck --Jarekt (talk) 13:20, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Replacing artists with question marks

We probably shouldn't replace artists that have question marks after them, as the Creator templates don't allow any text after them, so the rendering looks odd: [2]. I also wouldn't suggest changing the rendering behavior of the Creator template since many entries that have multiple artists depend on the current line wrapping behavior. Kaldari (talk) 21:39, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

OK I will tweak the replacement rules to make sure that does not happen. --Jarekt (talk) 03:33, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Sorry about the "Closed" part I was only trying to mark what text was copied. Also I am not doing any big changes only adding Category:Climbing by type to images hidden in Category:Climbing by country subcategories. I was on a look out for some good big wall images, but you are correct if that route is usually done in a day than it should not be in the Big wall climbing category. --Jarekt (talk) 02:36, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

In all other sports, you put an image under "sportpeople by country" only if you know the name, and the man/woman has some rilevance. E.g. see Category:Tennis players from the United States. Oops, I add a lot of Category:People by name and death/birth categories to Category:Creator template home categories, so I must have done this one too. In the future if you see more of those you can also add this to the creator template so be bot will ignore them. --Jarekt (talk) 02:28, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
I am still not happy. “Date of birth/death” does not make sense for a company. IMO corporate creator templates should be readily distinguishable from normal creator templates. --Leyo 07:05, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

City of Boston Archives images

Hi Jarek. I'm working on an upload of a small collection from the City of Boston Archives. It's the images from this collection. Right now, I am trying to mock up a sample image description page to show them, but I'm a little lost with the templates. I made the partnership template at User:Dominic/Sandbox (it all outputs right in English, though it might not all be correct). I tried using Template:Artwork for the image information, but it seems to lack some fields, like location (of the photo's subject, rather than the document) and the record ID. You can see all the information I wanted to include for the first image in [6], but much of that doesn't show up right, and I'm not sure how best to do it. Can you help me out? Dominic (talk) 19:55, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

See updated User_talk:Dominic/Sandbox. Would that work? --Jarekt (talk) 03:30, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh, this is great. These seemed like basic enough needs that the general template should be able to handle them, but this works as well. Thanks! Can you change "accession number" to "collection ID", since that is what it is? I tried and failed. And is there a way to put in a "collection" parameter for the collection's name? Also, I wasn't planning on including the Flickr links, since they just repeat the information from the cityofboston.gov source, and the files are inferior (or will be, when we get the masters!). An empty "Source" row still shows up when I leave that field blank, though; can it not do that? I uploaded the sample I'll show them at File:Abrahams, Henry School (Exterior).jpg (with OTRS pending so no one deletes it in the meantime). Dominic (talk) 04:37, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
--Jarekt (talk) 15:25, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
An accession number actually refers to something different than the library's or archives' classification scheme. You can have items in the same collection that were accessioned from different acquisitions years apart. This isn't too important, but I didn't want it to look wrong to an archivist. In any case, I hadn't thought about the fact that the source field is required, and I actually think the best solution is to just put the collection name, ID, and box/folder information all in the source field, without a named row for accession/collection number anymore. I tried doing it, but I could only get it to put that in the "Source/Photographer" field. After that, though, and putting the partnership banner back, I think everything's perfect. Dominic (talk) 18:19, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Check again, I fixed it few minutes ago. --Jarekt (talk) 18:21, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks so much! :-) Dominic (talk) 18:23, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Question

Hello, I've came to you because I've a query. If a photographer does not wish to keep his photos here, what is the procedure for removal? --SupernovaExplosion Talk 03:19, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello, please reply. I'm confused. --SupernovaExplosion Talk 03:30, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
See FAQ#I_have_uploaded_an_image.2C_can_I_revoke_the_licence_later.3F. If photographer released photos under a free license as required prior to upload, than that can not be revoked, so there is no procedure for removal. --Jarekt (talk) 03:35, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

PD-old-70 OR PD-old-100

Hi,

I've imported 5 files like this one File:Coypel Athalie interroge Joas.jpg. I don't understand why you are changed the licence in PD-old-100 instead of PD-old-70. Because in France it's 70 years after the dead of the autor. Could you explain me this changement ?

Some one like this one stay in PD-old-70 : File:Debret Projet Théâtre Cercle du Commerce à Brest2.jpg

Gaëlle FILY (talk) 11:45, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Author died more than 70 years ago and the change from PD-old to PD-old-100 just says that users in countries that do use 100 years after authors death, can use it too. If you have choice between PD-old-70 and PD-old-100 than PD-old-100 is always better. --Jarekt (talk) 19:18, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
I doubt if this mass update of license information was correct. Now the actual reason why the image is free under the jurisdiction of origin is just missing. PD-old-100 might have been added additonally. Besides, if the copyright for some reason hasn't expired in US yet, then the image is not OK at Commons anyways, isn't it? 90.190.114.172 20:08, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

IW on subcategories of Category:Ships by name

Hi Jarekt,

The number of subcategories has somewhat expanded. If you find time for it, would you run the interwiki bot on these and regenerate the list of subcategories that don't have any? That would be most helpful. --  Docu  at 09:46, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Bundesarchiv

Jarek, will you have time to see about the Bundesarchiv thing soon ? Though they have stopped uploading a while ago, I have told them that we would try to adopt the new template, so it would be better if we do not wait too long. --Zolo (talk) 13:20, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

I will be working on Walters images for a long while, but I think we can squeeze Bundesarchiv revamp. Let me look at the proposed template some than lets change an image or two and ask people for opinion, probably at VP and project talk page. Than I can start changing. I will likelly get beat up for it anyway based on my previous experience helping with Bundesarchiv and Phototek projects. --Jarekt (talk) 01:37, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
Hmm it seems that relations between Commoners and the archives were not always that easy. I had left a message about possible changes on the current template talk page (no reply) and forgot about Commons:Bundesarchiv. Some changes were made since I discussed the template with the Archive, but that should not radically changes things. Anyhow we can still touch up the layout afterwards. I guess you can have a try on a few dozen pages, and then ask for opinions on the project page.
By the way, do you see where blank lines after the "original title" parameter come from ?--Zolo (talk) 12:35, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Błędne kategorie i lansowanie swojej wersji historii

Category:Personifications of Poland

Category:Polish areas annexed by Soviet Union

Dotyczy tego samego użytkownika co wyżej. [7], [8] i [9] dokonał kolejnego revertu wg własnej wizji historii.

Can you explain this revert to me? Harej (talk) 04:50, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

No I can not. I do not recall doing any reverts on Dominic's page, or anybody's page for that matter. But since that happen around 11am, what must have happen is that I accidentally pressed rollback button somewhere when I was browsing around on my blackberry when I was stuck somewhere for 1/2 an hour. I noticed that my blackberry have some issues with clicking: you point, click than screen jumps a little and you either click on nothing or on a wrong link. Sorry about that, I will check for other edits around that time. --Jarekt (talk) 20:32, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

City of Boston donation

Hi Jarek. I'm finally starting to receive files from the City of Boston for the batch of historic photos they are donating. Unfortunately, the metadata only comes in an item list in a PDF, and I'm not really sure what is the best way to work with it. I have uploaded the finding aid with the metadata to File:Guide to the Photographs of School Buildings (City of Boston Archives).pdf. This finding aid only has the unique IDs, but does not have the names (like "Exterior, 1924 October 7") for each photo included in the finding aid on their website. I do have the images, though, or at least over a hundred of them, which you can download from [10]. Do you have any idea of the best way to get all of those files into a format like File:Abrahams, Henry School (Exterior) - 0403002001 - City of Boston Archives.jpg? I'm not sure what to do. Dominic (talk) 23:01, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Dominic, PDF allowed me to copy and paste to Excel, where after some data massaging I managed to cast it into some usable format. I will play with it for a little bit more to associate it with specific files, before I send it to you. --Jarekt (talk) 17:18, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
otrs:2012053010009199 is the public domain declaration for works of the City of Boston from the city archivist, by the way. I was hoping for a standard "works of X government are in the public domain" (like a generic PD-USGov, except this isn't the federal government), without creating a new copyright license just for Boston. I'm not sure if {{PD-author|[http://www.cityofboston.gov City of Boston]}} is the best way to do that. And I was hoping to put the OTRS link in the license template, to avoid the big ugly {{PermissionOTRS}} on every page. Dominic (talk) 15:25, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Barch-template exchange bot error

Hi Jarekt,

I thaink that rather than removing the blanks form == {{int:license}} == the bot should leave the blanks and change it to == {{int:license-header}} ==. It would be nice if you could change that. Cheers --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 15:49, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

The purpose of the current bot run is to add {{BArch-image}} to Bundesarchiv images and to unify their format. Changes to header format are purely accidental: Bot recognizes multiple formats used, and replaces them with the most common format. I do not have opinion about {{int:license}} vs. {{int:license-header}}, at some point there was a big debate about it, but it seems that you are correct: {{int:license-header}} must be currently preferred version since it is the template currently added by UploadWizard. Unfortunately, the run is mostly done now, with 79k edits already performed with less than 4k to go. We did ask for suggestions for proposed bot edits at VP and Bundesarchiv project page and did not getting any. --Jarekt (talk) 16:35, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Jarektbot adding BArch-image template

Your edits like this not say, that you also replaced the copyright tag. Thats bad. The old CC-license was good also for reuse in countries with low threshold of originality, i.e. protection of reproductions/scans. Thats for example the UK or Germany, where the sittuation is unclear. And it was good for files with possible URAA restoration in the US. It was not required to replace the BArch-license with {{{PD}}}-switch with the PD templates, so please revert this. --Martin H. (talk) 20:49, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

You are right. I did not notice that files with "PD" option display PD and CC license templates. My intention was to leave licenses as found. I will add missing CC licenses. --Jarekt (talk) 22:03, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
Wait a moment, that was a nasty trick. You first changed the license and then come here to complain that my bot removed CC licenses, while you knew that those files did not display CC license at the time of my edits. I do not care if you want to add CC license to all those files that so far only showed PD license, but such moves are often controversial and should be discussed first. If you want to be doing such controversial changes than at least do it under your own name instead trying to trick other editors to do them for you. --Jarekt (talk) 01:53, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
Eh, I not made a "complaint" in that direction. I just ask you to add the template back because you not made transparent why you removed it and you not have any reason to remove it. The old template worked fine. --Martin H. (talk) 02:05, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
So in fact you did a controversial change without any discussion and witout even mentioning it in your edit summaries. Revert it back to the initial situation. --Martin H. (talk) 02:10, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
The change was requested and discussed at Commons_talk:Bundesarchiv. You should have voiced you concerns when we were discussing the proposed changes. If you would like to propose other changes you should discuss them there. --Jarekt (talk) 02:15, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
No, you not say there that the "PD=Yes" parameter added by one editor essentially means that you will now come and replace the copyright tag. Thats not mentioned anywhere. You only say that you will replace {{BArch-description}} with {{BArch-image}} and that you will update {{BArch-license}}. Thats all. I read that discussion at the time, the more Im surpriesed now that you abused your bot for something very unecessary. And that you now talk about it instead of correcting it asap. --Martin H. (talk) 02:21, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
The original request under discussion included "Replace {{BArch-License}} with standard CC tag" part, and all the test bathes done and discussed prior to the main run included that change. You should have voiced you concerns them. --Jarekt (talk) 02:32, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
Replacing a custom CC tag with a standard CC tag does not include removal of tags, that was done and it was undiscussed.
Here I say thank you very much for your uncooperativeness and your friendly insult in your second post. I will revert your edits for the files that I can remember I tagged with "PD=Yes" in the past. --Martin H. (talk) 03:01, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Joseph Adam Mölk

Hello Jarekt! Sorry, I don't speak good english and I hope you understand what I want to say. ;-) I mean your Edit here. I have filled in the Name "Joseph Adam Mölk", because I have a book from the year 2010 about him (this one), and there he is called like this. Userscript

Hi Jarekt,

I know your fondness for the artwork template; has someone created a userscript to, say, add a link in the user toolbox area to make the template easier to add for new uploads? I was just uploading some of my Washington art related photos but find it a drag to copy and fill in - particularly when cribbing from the museum/galleries own catalogue entry. Obviously standard drop-lists against existing material definitions and so forth would be very handy. Thanks -- (talk) 11:16, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

No, I do not think there is anything. May be we should ask for customized image uploader. Also someone told me (I did not verify yet) that it is possible to modify Commonist to work with other templates. --Jarekt (talk) 00:34, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I have been doing a little on this, but I wanted to check I'm not messing with plans you have. I've moved losts of Fushi into a new category, including some by named artists, thus maybe splitting up sets by artist. I see you've set up some "by artist" cats. Were you planning to do more of this? The by artist Walters stuff can still be grouped via a search. I'd welcome comments.

Also, the Category:Parts of the daisho and its sub-cats are an alternative scheme with hardly any contents that should be merged. Johnbod (talk) 18:11, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

I believe that 95% of images are already categorized by artist (except for little known artists and some images with multiple artists). I welcome any categorization you can provide, as long as images currently categorized by artist remain categorized by artist and all images stay in some subcategory of Category:Collections of the Walters Art Museum. Category:Tosogu (Japanese sword fittings) in the Walters Art Museum is a great collection and definitely needs some attention, unfortunately I do not know much about Japanese weapons, so at the moment I am not planning to work more on that set. --Jarekt (talk) 19:57, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
Ok thanks. I took all or nearly all of them out of "Art of Japan", & linked up the main "sword fittings" cat into Art of Japan, which it wasn't before. Now I'm splitting out more fitting types from Category:Tosogu (Japanese sword fittings) in the Walters Art Museum to get it to some sort of reasonable size. That'll be it - I know nothing about them either sadly. Thanks, Johnbod (talk) 21:10, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Re:...

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Gnangarra#Confused_about_User:Gnangarra.2FK20D

I was most confused as to why my licensing was modified without any comment on my talk page, as well SatuSuro (talk) 04:50, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I should have commented. I was adding license templates to quite a lot of files which were missing licenses, mostly the cases when license template was lost during one of the edits and cases when license was named but license template was missing. In my mind I was only adding a proper internationalized template to files that only name it. But in retrospect you are right, I should have slow down and discuss it first. I apologize. --Jarekt (talk) 12:21, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Please do not apologise - I can see where you are coming from - it is very important to make sure that valid licenses exist - and I can see where a concern can arise - now that I have followed suit from the template qualifier at - user:gnangarra - I do hope I am above board so to speak... SatuSuro (talk) 12:49, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

I am not thrilled with user:gnangarra solution. It works for English speakers but it hides the license in users language in a drop down box which can not be easily found unless you speak English. However I am not going to pursue it further. Just to let you know a lot of people are quite unhappy about personal licenses stored in user namespace. They create a lot of headaches, especially when people start modifying them (sometimes making licenses more restrictive). The problem with that is that history of the license modification should be easy to look-up for each file. There were many discussions over the years about such licenses and many would like to add the content of such licenses directly to the files. I am not planning to do any such thing but do not be surprised if someone starts working with your license again, since many consider Category:User custom license tags as Category:Images for cleanup (see for example edit summary at here) --Jarekt (talk) 13:18, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you very much for time to explain the issues - I understand that there is always a possibility of further actions - my understanding of the inherent part of the 2.5 license Australian which I think gives the license holder standing which is not so restrictive but assertive of authorship which I think my understanding of CCSA 3 does not adeqautely assert. I may well be misinterpreting the issues - but that is my memory of when I chose to utilise the license as I have done so. Thanks again. SatuSuro (talk) 13:29, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

File:TeklaBadarzewska.jpg

You recently placed the {{No license}} tag on File:TeklaBadarzewska.jpg. Please consider that a) the uploader, User:RRafal, has only 10 edits on the Polish Wikipedia and has not edited on any Wikimedia site since May 2012; her/his only edits, bar one, were at pl:Tekla Bądarzewska-Baranowska where she/he added this and the related image. b) The user placed the template {{self|cc-by-3.0}} on the related image File:FragmentGrobowcaTB.jpg. Both images have EXIF data from the same camera model and a time stamp 1 minute apart. I think we can safely conclude that RRafal took both those pictures and that he forgot to include the template {{self|cc-by-3.0}} on the image she/he uploaded first. I suggest to apply that template to the image in question as well. Regards, -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 03:05, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Illustrations of I Promessi sposi

Dear Jarekt, thanks for editing by bot the illustrations listed into Category:Illustrations of I promessi sposi (1840). But I'm afraid that there's a systematic mistake (my fault, I apologyse), since Alessandro Manzoni is the famous author of the book, but illustrations are by Creator:Francesco Gonin. I uploaded illustrations in a hurry and - me stupid - I set Commonist with wrong parameters.

There's too another mistake, some illustrations have "Alessandro manzoni" (wrong capitalization instead of Alessandro Manzoni) as author. They have been ignored by your bot.

So, could you run your bot again on images listed into Category:Illustrations of I promessi sposi (1840), replacing:

  • {{Creator:Alessandro Manzoni}} with {{Creator:Francesco Gonin}}
  • Alessandro manzoni with {{Creator:Francesco Gonin}}

I too am a driver of a busy bot (it:s:User:Alebot), but it hasn't global permission and I run it mainly into it.wikisource. Perhaps I'll ask for a bot flag here too, since I presume that we are going to do many replacings here both to convert Information into Book and plain author name into Creator calls; I'd like to help. Is Commons policy very strict about bot flagging, is it hard to get permission? --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 23:01, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Done. Some bot help with wikisource tasks would be greatly appreciated, those files are often very neglected. I did a lot of work related to converting more than 10 competing templates into {{Book}}. If you do any {{Information}} to {{Book}} conversions than lets talk first about details. I also like to add links to previous and next pages, once you are at it. See here for one way to do it. Getting bot flag on Commons is often a rather dysfunctional process. It is less strict than what I hear EN wiki is and sometimes it can take a LONG time. Commons:Bots/Requests/BrooklynMuseumBot should be a cautionary tale of a very good bot that never got a bot flag, but still did a remarkable upload job. I would suggest to request for a broad range of tasks related to wikisource maintenance, with a very specific narrow initial task or two, like {{Information}} to {{Book}} conversions. --Jarekt (talk) 13:06, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. It's a little bit discouraging... but I'll try.
As you imagine, I'm going to try a "data revolution", assuming Book and Creator as main containers for good, shared metadata for wikisource scope. Preliminary tests of "inter-wiki data reading" are incouraging, even if field content of Book is far from standardized, and some more work is needed to make things simple. I presume that there's a great work to do before launching a bot...
About Book: there are some fields which could generate automatic categories (i.e. Books by... from Author field); it.source is very active in this issue, and we solved too the relatively hard trouble of multiple data (i.e. multiple authors) into a single template field, any data being individually processed to generate categories, using template syntax only. Js would add much to these tricks, but I presume that here such tricks should be avoided. Tell me if you are interested to "multiple indipendent data into a single field" trick. In the meantime, I'll try to convert some Information into Book template, adding too Creator templates, just to learn as much I can. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 09:13, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt. I saw you removed the OTRS template of File:Lotte.JPG, but this is sufficient permission. Trijnsteltalk 22:36, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Self-compiled Creator page

Dear Jarekt, can you review this: Creator:Antonio Schinella Conti?

It's my first test of compiling a Creator page with two mouse clicks (and English translation of Occupation field). Data come from it.wikisource.org and are imported with a AJAX inter-project call (first click), then translated into a Creator template (second click). Unlucky Occupation was in Italian ("fisico") so I have to replace manually "fisico" with "physicist".

Please report to me any major or minor mistake. Thanks! --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 23:02, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

That is very good. A few points:
  • {{LangSwitch}} has to have either "en" or "default" version. I would not use LangSwitch if you have only one. See more at {{LangSwitch}}
  • Name usually has links to wikipedia if possible. If not than {{subst:PAGENAME}} will do.
  • Birth and death place do not need {{City}}, but it does not hurt. Work location does need {{City}}
  • Occupation issue can be solved by writing a template that reverses {{Occupation/it}}. {{Occupation/it}} does en->it translation it would be easy to do it->en. Than you can pipe your occupations through this (substituted) template
  • Finally a home category would be great, with at least creator template, DEFAULTSORT, Category:People by name and birth/death year categories. Other like Category:Writers from Italy would be great. Categories can often be copied from EN wikipedia. For years I am trying to clean-up Category:Creator templates without home category, but it just keeps growing. In many cases a category will already exist.

All of the above points should be treated as optional would-be-great-to-have, except for LangSwitch issue. --Jarekt (talk) 03:25, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! I'll study your answer; and I see some opportunities to put "test jobs" by my bot; I posted a formal request to have a flag. I too found the gadget to upload Authority control to Creator template; I was horrified by the idea of adding data manually... o_O
About occupation translation: perhaps I'll build a small js dictionary by now, occupation list for it.source authors is not so long. The "inverse translation template" is an excellent idea, but I'll do it when a good translation en->it will be done. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 07:46, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
It runs :-). Tool creates too wikitext for home category, wrapped in a html comment into Creator page as done here: Creator:Giovanni Berchet. Tell me please if this comment confuses any bot in your opinion (I hope, it will not, but if it will, I'll put it into a js alert to be comfortably copied into home category). ‎--Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 23:05, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
I think comments should be OK, and they can be easily removed by the bot afterwards. I do not think we should plan to keep them long term. I would remove the 2 extra new-line characters from the template. --Jarekt (talk) 02:50, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Ok thanks; removing comments is a good "test job" too for User:Alex brolloBot. :-)
I saw too that Creator already uses "multiple data into a single field" just as we do into it.wikisource from a long time. Very good! --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 08:56, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Self-compiled Creator page, en.wiki version

Ouch! Both vcard data and raw template contents of infobox are not so finely customized, and vcard data are poor (some interesting data, i.e. occupation, are not coded at all).

I'll try to parse raw template parameters, if you uploaded User:Alex brollo/vector.js with importScript you'll see data to be parse with metadati en:w button using it from a Creator page linking by name with a en:w page (I'm testing scripts from Creator:Dante Alighieri, but as you can see users are free to add wiki code into parameters and to use free text too (see that birth_date: Mid-May to mid-June c. 1265 :-( ). Ok, let's we try.... --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 22:22, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

3/4 of the work done for test case Creator:Dante Alighieri, only dates are to be parsed when possible. Please test the script if you can and report me anything wrong. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 07:30, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
I was not able to get it to work. I copied the code to user:jarekt/vector.js and now several buttons show up on the bottom of my pages. By the way the location of the buttons is very inconvenient, since they sit on top of cat-a-lot button, and it is hard to live without cat-a-lot. I tried to create Creator:Dante Alighieri: clicking on creator produces "Error: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Alex_brollo/Library.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript at line 412: TypeError: dataNascita is undefined", clicking the "book" button gives "Error: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Alex_brollo/Library.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript at line 363: ReferenceError: fileUrl is not defined". By the way it is hard to believe we did not have Creator:Dante Alighieri. I did some improvements to it. --Jarekt (talk) 13:44, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
What's a pity... right bottom corner is free into it.source. Well, I'll convert relevant buttons into something different, i.e. new left menu links. I'll test the new settings with my bot account. Thanks for trying. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 15:25, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Ok, I'm using my bot account as a socketpuppet, it runs.
As soon as you'd like to try again (into some days, parsing of en:wiki dates is faulty so far) write this into your vector.js or common.js:
importScript("User:Alex brollo/Library.js");
It runs on a perfectly empty user, so I hope it will for you too. Three new links will appear into Toolbox list of sidebar: metadati it:w, metadati en:w and creatorMake, when you are in nsCreator only. Buttons will not appear at all, ever. --Alex brolloBot (talk) 16:20, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
When I go to Creator:Dante Alighieri and click "creatorMake", I am getting: Error: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Alex_brollo/Library.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript at line 106: TypeError: $("textarea")[area] is undefined --Jarekt (talk) 19:22, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
I apologyze... it's obvious for me, but far from obvious for an user trying it: creator button is to be clicked in edit/preview mode only. I'll fix js code so that creator button and/or creator link would appear in edit/submit mode inly.
O, that what it was. So I tried it for Creator:Giosuè Carducci and the creatorMake created text but only nationality and gender were correct. I will try some other cases. --Jarekt (talk) 14:14, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
Try Creator:Giosuè Carducci from en:w; it:w has a ref into name parameter! It wastes all. I've to test for refs and remove them as soon as possible from template wikicode. :-(
When translating parseTemplate() in python (a very interesting routine, it converts a template into a smart python object, a dictionary of named and positional parameters) I tested it on en:Dante Alighieri and I found a serious mistake. See inage parameter:
| image = Dante-alighieri.jpg|thumb|left
Do you see the mistake? thumb and left are considered simply as positional parameters and then ignored, since the template code doesn't uses at all {{{1}}} and {{{2}}}; but, if so a complex template would use them.... some en:w:user would get an headache. ;-)
My python routine lists them as parameters, and it is right. :-)
Now Creator:Giosuè Carducci can be created too from it:w. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 22:47, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

I tried Creator:Stanisław Lem, see here and after few tries it worked. Initially it did not work because I clicked CreatorMake without clicking metadati en:w or metadati it:w first. Few observations:

  • May be CreatorMake should not show up until one of the other buttons is clicked.
  • In this case the best creator page would be composed based on 'en' and 'it' versions. May be it would be possible for new text to be added to the existing text instead of replacing it.
  • Some of the fields were filled incorrectly: nationality was PL not IT. Wikisource pages do not exist for him yet so the link is wrong.
  • The LangSwitch in the name parameter can be compiled based on interwiki links at Category:Stanisław Lem if present. I have a python code here that allows conversion from interwiki to LangSwitch format.

It looks very promising. I will try it on some more pages. Thanks --Jarekt (talk) 02:58, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

A small advancement: dates from en:w (a couple of common formats) can be parsed by now. Yes, I too saw troubles with name linking (things are much more complex I presumed, from redirects, disambiguation, differences between file name and name field content into Bio / Infobox. I'll try to find a good strategy, but a very deeper insight into links/interlinks is needed.
About using data to fix/to change existing Creator data: it's a big issue, since diff are to be managed one by one by user. I presume that a manual fix by the user is much more safe and effective; perhaps replacing of an existing Creator code should be disabled to avoid mistakes.
Really this was the first step only in our project - the next should be, self-updating of Information template from Index page data; but this project is growing much above first aims. I hope, I am not facing with a project above my skills/time. :-( --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 07:53, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

[Ticket#2012100510008174] on OTRS four files

Thank you for your assistance with the files I needed undeleted. I have four other files I have had the request sent for and I can"t make heads or tails from the situation. I had the request sent by the copyright holder, Willie Buck (William Crawford) and he assured me this morning that it was sent with the proper permissions. He provided me with URLs and everything.

Please let me know. I wanted use these files in the creation of my page (willie Buck). OTRS has the files and permissions required. Please let me know if I need to contact Willie, Delmark, Gaztelupeko Hotsak or anyone else necessary to complete this page. thank you. Monorail11261 (talk) 18:37, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

I am personally a newbie to the OTRS process, but from what I can tell The OTRS ticket is progressing: Original request was send, followed by question and reply. As far as I can tell the next step in this kabuki dance is for the files to be uploaded and the links to the uploaded files to be send back to the agent in charge of this case. You can probably upload the files and send the information about it to William Crawford who can then forward it to the OTRS agent. --Jarekt (talk) 18:58, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your help. I will wait to see for a bit longer. If possible, could you find out what agent is working on it so I could send him a message to try to expedite this situation? Thanks again. Monorail11261 (talk) 22:11, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

I matched another 4 or your uploads with ticket:2012100510008174 and restored them. The remaining files in Category:Willie Buck will likely be deleted, since they are not mentioned in OTRS emails. --Jarekt (talk) 13:18, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Sorry I am still trying to find my way around OTRS and so far I was only helping at Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard and with Category:Items with OTRS permission confirmed but no license. The ticked was locked for me. You marked a note (2012100510008174), and allowed the permission, but the ticket still open. If you notice, it's the same ticket that it's not closed by me. You edited the file but did not edited in otrs-channel, cause it still open. I can say that cause it's blocked in my account. So, I won't edit that since you, I guess, confimed the permission. And now: Book!

Thanks for your appreciation, I just read Proposals.

It's time to let creatorMake() to fly if it can; as you told, it has been an idea, coupled with a test to see if such and idea can run. It can.

Now I'm going to work on Information to Book conversion. Is seems much simpler, since any divu/pdf file is lnked with one main Index page into a wikisource project, and Index pages are built with a common template: MediaWiki:Proofreadpage_index_template, with simple, "atomic" parameter contents. When you run metadati it:w and metadati en:w, MediaWiki:Proofreadpage_index_template parameter content are already loaded and parsed, as you see from js console looking for object oggetto.

Nevertheless, I'm going to explore a completely different, much faster and effective data exchange between source Index page and common File page. It is really incredibly simple and fast... without any trace of Ajax inside. :-)

Let's me try. But before I've to link creator button to metadata buttons, following your suggestion. :-) --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 20:33, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Let me know if you need any changes to the {{Book}} metadata. --Jarekt (talk) 20:39, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
Really, I'm ignoring at all microformats by now; but I'll need them when I'll work to inverse extraction of data from Book and Creator, that is my end goal. creatorMake link appears now only when data can be used (in edit mode on a nsCreator pageand after a metadati link has been clicked), as from your suggestion. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 22:28, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
Also what do you think about current {{Creator}} microtags. Current tags do not capture fields like nationality, gender, occupation, sortkey, etc. since those keys are not presented by themselves. We could add some invisible tags but those would not be based on <td> id's. --Jarekt (talk) 02:01, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you're right, microdata should be atomic i.e. simple, unformatted, standard text. I presume that main infobox-like templates should be presented as forms, adding too some js control of validity for range of values and for absence of any formatting code. This is precisely our policy into it.wikisource, uor basib infobox templates (Autore, nsIndex template, Intestazione) are built to contain simple, "naked" text and this is unvaluable to recover "clean" data (we build from a long time a DIY system of "data semantization" using LST extension, and many data aren't doubled: they are always recovered by transclusion and/or by js from a unique location). This is why I feel a little unconfortable dealing with it.wikisource, en.wikisource and commons too; this is why too, sometimes creatorMake doesn't give expected results and it's almost impossible to build an integral automation.
Nevertheless, I feel that's almost impossible to change deeply the engine of such important templates, and I think that the best strategy is, to try to get what can be got/parsed/cleaned up by js, and to fill holes by hand, while waiting for wikidata revolution.
I see that you are a good bot-driver and an expert template code editor but: do you read/write js too? --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:06, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
No I do not read/write js at this point, although, I am trying to read your Library.js. --Jarekt (talk) 15:25, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
After some experience with Python, I discoveried that js is pretty similar to python.... and I falled in love of it. Chrome js console is so similar to python Idle, my main interface to python...
Just to let you know, I thought a third method to import data into Creator and File pages, I'll test it as needed as soon as I got a bot flag. The idea is, to collect/parse/organize into a JSON object as many metadata as possible from variuos sources (wikisource, wikipedia, commons) by bot, a data block for each wikisource Index file, then post the JSON object wrapped into a html comment into the wikicode of File: and/or Creator: pages here. So, when you enter in such "preloaded" pages, data are already there, ready to be parsed by js and used. I imagine a form-like box to display suggested values from the various sources, each data coupled with a checkbox, so that the user has only to click best data (or groups of them) to import them into Book or Creator templates; no more AJAX, no more logical troubles from async programming, full compatibility with "old" methods like creatorMake() and bookMake(). It runs in my head - let us see if it runs too into virtual real world. It would too solve the problem you raised, t.i. to update some fields only of Creator or Book templates.
If I'll not get a bot flag here, I can do exactly the same writing the invisible data block into a wikisource page, then reading it by AJAX; perhaps it would be less alarming for Commons users. :-) --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 07:30, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

A guide to Polish copyright

Following some recent discussions, I have attempted to compile a guide to Polish copyright. It's available at User:Piotrus/PolishCopyright. I'd like to invite you to comment on it, and of course you are more then welcome to improve it. I am contacting you and several other commons editors who I know work with Polish Copyrights, as I am not aware of any centralized noticeboard to reach them, feel free to pass this message to such a place if it exists, and to whoever else you think could be interested in such a topic. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 16:42, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Time in information template - Template:ISOdate

Hello Jarekt,

when uploading new files, I noticed that date and time information formatted like "2012-10-11 13:54:17" (File:Rohrbach am Giesshuebel Kreuz Johannes Leinz 20121011.jpg) is shown as "11. Oktober 2012, 01:54:17". That is not the correct time of course, that image was not made at 01:54 am, but at 13:54 (pm). I cannot recall having seen this error before today. Do you think it might have something to do with this edit of yours that changed Template:ISOdate? Regards --Rosenzweig τ 20:54, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Category:Boston Public Schools (school district)

Hi! I'm curious about the titling as Category:Boston Public Schools (school district). I had the understanding that when the name is said in all capitalizations, it is unambiguously the organization "Boston Public Schools" and that there is no other entity like it on a comparable scale (i.e. small towns shouldn't matter). I think it should be moved to "Boston Public Schools" WhisperToMe (talk) 11:37, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

I think there is some confusion between Category:Public schools in Boston‎ and "Boston Public Schools". I agree that capitalization suggest that "Boston Public Schools" is an unique name of organization, but the name suggests something else (any public school in Boston city). Without clear distinction between them people try to merge Category:Boston Public Schools (school district) and Category:Public schools in Boston‎, as I did once. I think current name makes the distinction a bit more clear. --Jarekt (talk) 16:50, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

News from it.wikisource: Tabella attiva

Happy to let you know that the prototype of an "active table" to edit specific template fields is running. Presently it runs with "dummy data", but if you like to test such a code, simply copy into your chrome js console the code you'll find in s:it:Utente:Alex brollo/Tabella attiva and run it (it is running code, not a function) and hopefully you'll see as it runs; note that left cells are textareas, so that you can import with a click the content of any right cell and the edit the result. So, perhaps I got two results: a "form interface" for any structured template, and a "import engine" to import data with a click.

The "table box" runs bot in view and edit mode; it's simply superimposed to html content of the page, you can delete it with a double click anywhere. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 11:53, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Now, a bot python script can follow links and interwiki links from Index: page to author's pages into it:w, en:w and fr:w; can collect data from infobox templates and can write them as a JSON-coded object. simple to parse by js too. I've only to imagine how to feed "active table" with them, then I'll have something interesting to show to you. (the idea is, to pre-load such data into empty Creator pages, then edit them with "active table" tool). --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:31, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Licence

Hello, this license appears to prevent the reuse of designs on commercial sites like Zazzle. If you want to delete all my drawings are also here : [12] you will see on this page is the right license. Mathieu C. (talk) 19:49, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Anyway I'm sick for some time to see my drawings reused for purposes that I do not approve. You can request the removal of all those below. Mathieu C. (talk) 19:51, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
I do not want to delete any drawings, my intention is to a license recognized by Commons. I just noticed that User:SanglierT/creditimage license was originally fully compliant. You can not revoke original licenses. I would like to restore User:SanglierT/creditimage to the original state. Would that be OK with you? --Jarekt (talk) 19:58, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
I think to be clear, I do not want a license that allows anyone to sell a work that I did while I draw for it to remain in the area of free. I have no problem with the reuse of my work only with marketing. So it is impossible to prevent the marketing of my work I prefer to remove it. It will be a shame, but if this is the only way to avoid some make money on my back so bad. When I save the file on commons, I recorded in CC-BY-CA, but by non-commercial license appear on my page I discourage reuse my work for commercial purposes.Mathieu C. (talk) 20:01, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
We all face the same problems and many people donating their work here find their work used in a way not compatible with the license. To combat that you can choose not to release any more images under CC-BY-CA or upload them here (I hope you will not do that); however you can not change a license on existing images. See FAQ#I_have_uploaded_an_image.2C_can_I_revoke_the_licence_later.3F. Once you release something under some license you can only add new licenses to it, but can not take any away. --Jarekt (talk) 12:02, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
I do not want to change the license under which are recorded images. I just want to scare those who would like to reuse for commercial purposes. When I saw one of my drawings on the cover of a book without even knowing I can assure you that it's weird to see that some uses your work to make money. So in the conditions it is impossible to prevent the commercial use of my work I prefer it to be removed and I would stop publishing on commons. Mathieu C. (talk) 12:47, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Commercial use is allowed under all licenses accepted on Commons, however those still have to follow terms of the license, like proper attribution. If your image was used without "© Mathieu CHAINE, CC-BY-SA, Wikimedia Commons" you can contact the publisher and let them know that they did not follow the license. You might be even able to sue them if you are inclined to do so. However if publishers can not follow clear directions in original User:SanglierT/creditimage, I do not think they will notice "NC" part of your current license. I also do not think that is a good reason for stopping publications on Commons. We can definitely use skilled graphic artists interested in Coats of Arms --Jarekt (talk) 15:24, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
So we agree, the problem solved and I do not want my designs to be marketed by someone, so if wikipedia can not guarantee this, so I request the pure and simple removal of all mine drawings you can find on this following page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Files_by_User:SanglierT_from_fr.wikipedia Thanks and be sure I would prefer let my work on commons but if you can't protect it a little I don't want. And contrary to what you say, it's a very good reason to stop publishing this type of drawing. I do not want to spend hours working to free others sell my work. I'm not altruistic point of wanting to make the fortune of others. Regards Mathieu C. (talk) 15:45, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
You can choose not to contribute new images to Commons, however images you have already contributed and released under CC-BY-SA can not be un-released. Images we upload even if we are the only author do not belong to us, and deletion of useful image due to request of an author is rarely granted and only in extraordinary situations, see FAQ. That is something you can request at commons:village pump or com:AN. --Jarekt (talk) 17:45, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
So in the end nothing prevents me from leaving the NC mention on my license. So I let it and stop to product another image. Mathieu C. (talk) 18:04, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
You can leave NC on the license, however original license will need to be restored as well. --Jarekt (talk) 02:25, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Category:Files_using_one-of-a-kind_custom_license_tags has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

activeTab() can run here too

I just tested activeTab() on a Creator page: it runs! To run it, you'd import my vector.js code (JSValidator is obviously not required); first row is critical.

If you run the scripts, you'll see a new link (Active table) into sidebar when editing Creator or File pages (so far I tested sctipt into Creator ns only). Clicking it, Creator template will be imported into a table:

  1. column 0: name of fields;
  2. column 1: textareas to edit field content;
  3. column 2: current content of template. Clicking a cell its content is copied into textarea.

Other columns will be added, with data coming from it:wikipedia and en:wikipedia, so that you can edit textarea both changing it by keyboard, and importing data with a click from different listed sources. This is my interpretation of your request to import only specific data from en.wiki or it.wiki.

A double click everywhere into the table runs an editing script that closes the table and replaces original template with a new code, by merging/formatting textareas and parameter names.

The interesting thing is that the code is absolutely generalized, t.i. it works with any structured template: its code doesn't mention any parameter name or number. The same code runs on Intestazione or Autore template into it.source and on Creator or Book template here into Commons. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:51, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Alex thanks for your work. I tried activeTab() and one issue I run into was that the boxes were about 2 times to wide so the whole table was longer than the space provided and ended up on top of "save page" buttons. That was strange but probably OK since once I clicked on a single cell than its content was copied into text area. May be we should allow users to copy more than one cell at a time and copy all to textarea when some button is clicked. I will play more with it and share my impressions. --Jarekt (talk) 02:33, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

NARA template broken

The NARA images appear to have a broken template somewhere, such as here: File:Gen. Grant's house, Washington D.C - NARA - 529174.jpg. It seems to be an issue with {{Information field}} but can't figure out how to fix this and without breaking other stuff. Do you mind taking a look? Cheers. Aude (talk) 16:34, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

It seems to me many more templates are affected. I noticed it with the {{Walters artwork}} and I started to investigate here. It might be related to the last software update. I will look more into it. --Jarekt (talk) 20:03, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Wygląda na to ze przedtem nim przyszedłeś do mojej strony, dodałeś {{Zabytek}} do File:Church of the Conversion of St Paul, Uscie Solne village, Brzesko County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland.jpg. --Jarekt (talk) 11:52, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

        # Special case of Commons which allow intewiki lints to Wikipedias, but wikipedias do not allow linking to Commons
        if self.originPage.site().sitename()=='commons:commons':

          new2[self.originPage.site()] = self.originPage
          try:

          except:
            pywikibot.output(u"======Can't save the page %s======" % self.originPage.title(asLink=True))
        # JarekT changes END

My bot used to find missing interwikis, but while updating the page there is an error:

Subst and template

Hi Jarekt, you once gave me a great advice to replace "{{Information" with "{{subst:Artwork/subst" on Commons artwork images. I tried to use this trick on Wikipedia, just to generate a template with all its attributes, but doesn't seem to work there and I can't figure it out why. You can look at en:User:Codrinb/Test to see what I was trying to do. Can you please help when you have a moment? Thanks a lot! --Codrin.B (talk) 13:15, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

I think one step you have missed was creation of the helper template:Artwork/subst, which in your case would be en:Infobox dava/subst. You can see other example of substitution here using template created in your user space. See also mw:Manual:Substitution. --Jarekt (talk) 13:30, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the help! Makes sense. So the creation of the template:Artwork/subst still requires entering of all template attributes by hand. I am trying to find a way to automatically generate/display all the fields in a large template. --Codrin.B (talk) 08:46, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
I often use a spreadsheet for that. Put all the field names in one column and create wikitext based on them in the other column. --Jarekt (talk) 12:41, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Prośba o pomoc

Witam.

pytanie5: Do dodanego dziś przeze mnie pliku (File:Marceli Porowski 01.JPG), pewnien Użytkownik dodał nazwijmy to szablon. Czy mógłbyś mi wyjaśnić co on oznacza i z jakiego powodu się go dodaje? Czy powinnam go dodawać do wszystkich zdjęć mojego autorstwa?

Moze szablon {{Location}}?
Albo fotografów którzy musieli umrzeć więcej niż 70 lat temu: jeśli założysz ze fotograf miał 20 lat kiedy zrobił zdjęcie i żył on 100 lat to, zdjęcia zrobione więcej niż 70+100-20=150 lat temu mogą mieć ta licencje.
Pozdrowienia --Jarekt (talk) 01:08, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
Natomiast z drugiej strony (cytat z:http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Licencja): "Według art. 3 prawa autorskiego z 29 marca 1926r. (ważnego do 1952) i art.
  • Image is a photograph/plik jest fotografia
  • Photograph was published or distributed in Poland before May 23, 1994 / Fotografia była opublikowana w Polsce przed 23 maja 1994 roku
  • Photographer is Polish or the photograph was first published in Poland / Fotograf był Polakiem lub zdjęcie było po raz pierwszy opublikowane w Polsce.
--Jarekt (talk) 00:26, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
Dodaj inne języki jeśli znasz i popraw poziom angielskiego. --Jarekt (talk) 18:11, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Interwikis

Hi Jarek,

If you have a moment, would you have your bot go through Category:Ships by name and complete interwikis where possible? Thanks. --  Docu  at 12:25, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

I will try, but I will do some other runs first. At the moment I am adding interwiki links to subcategories of Category:People by name, if one of the major wikipedias have an article with the same name and matching birth/death dates. I was also working on a code to easily copy {{Authority control}} records from en and de wikis. --Jarekt (talk) 12:54, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Done less than a thousand needed it. --Jarekt (talk) 01:38, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

OTRS permissions for files uploaded by User:Kagon

Please, check the contributions of Kagon (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · edit filter log · block user · block log). He marked all of his uploads with OTRS permission tag with an identical ticket number. Only the first of the uploads (File:Группа "Балаган Лимитед".jpg) has been marked correctly by an OTRS member (namely by you). So, could you please verify if the permission from that ticket really includes all of his uploads. Thanks - A.Savin 20:25, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

See discussion with User:Lvova here. The OTRS permission seems to be valid. --Jarekt (talk) 13:33, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Name

Hi Jarekt

To remove the name at 110916-N-RC734-057, the upload log would need to be oversighted (or the picture re-uploaded with the previous version deleted) and the redirect deleted. --  Docu  at 21:11, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

I was not aiming for perfection here and removed the name in proximity of the image only. I do not think it is necessary to purge all the logs, since I assume the image and the name are still going to be linked on most of the other websites. And after all her ex must know what she look like and where she was when in military, so I do not understand the request. --Jarekt (talk) 03:47, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Personally, I don't understand the explanation for the request either, but I agree with you that we should remove her name here. I'd do this completely. --  Docu  at 20:45, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Portrait photograph of Janek Wiśniewski on his grave.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Yarl 21:23, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Empty import of Authority control

Hi Jarekt,

Awesome work with importing {{Authority control}} data from the Wikipedias.

I noticed this empty import and wanted to let you know: [13]

Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 12:01, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, The article had empty template. I can add a line to exclude short {{Authority control}} templates. --Jarekt (talk) 12:58, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
There were actually quite a few of those. See Category:Categories with empty authority control templates. --Jarekt (talk) 15:05, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
Noticed the category, time to fix one or two, and now it is already empty :). Thanks for the work. Jean-Fred (talk) 10:07, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt,

I noticed that here the {{Authority control}} was moved between DefaultSort and the categories, which is rather confusing (otherwise it adds/moves it to the top, which I believe is the best choice indeed.)

Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 10:09, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I add it in front of everything else, but I guess some minor cleanup tasks kick in and rearrange the layout a bit. I am not sure where they are but i can probably find out. Do you think it is worth stopping the bot to debug it? --Jarekt (talk) 17:51, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Oh, no, probably not worth the trouble. :) Jean-Fred (talk) 19:39, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Category:Massiccio del Monte Bianco

Hi Jarekt I have noticed this category that is just a duplicated of his parent category Category:Massif du Mont-Blanc. I would like to remove it. It's just the italian translation of "Massif du Mont-Blanc" so it's totally useless. If there aren't problems I would fix for the image categories inside and I mark it for deletion. Help ! Best license for "old" art

Hi Jarekt,

Since you gave me very good advice about book license, I come to you about "Art" (only "old" art, like Gainsborough or Flemish painters). I mean, what would be the "final" license (like {{PD-old-100-1923}} for books) ? apart from {{PD-Art-YorckProject}} which is specific

What would be the "best" license to put on them ?

I saw many variations :

  • {{PD-art}} - not detailed enough I guess
  • {{PD-art|PD-old-100}} (but it does not suppress the "CC-PD-Mark|Author died more than 100 years ago public domain images")
  • {{PD-art|PD-old-100-1923}} (equivalent for {{PD-scan|PD-old-100-1923}} on books ?
  • {{PD-art-100}} - seems to have the same effect as {{PD-art|PD-old-100}}
  • {{PD-old-100}} (seems insufficient to me)
  • {{PD-Art-two-auto|1788}} - I saw that one on GAP (Google Art Project) - seems heavy too, because I guess it computes the delay... and the "Licence block" is very "BIG"

So please, would you help me to have a "best choice" (one that would not require to be changed, after a time) ?

--Hsarrazin (talk) 10:26, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Yes those can be confusing. We just have too many of them, see some more options at User:Jarekt/a:

  • {{PD-art}} is the same as {{PD-art|PD-old}} and PD-old is not as good as {{PD-old-100}} or {{PD-old-70}}. Here "art" means 2D art, since that template should not be used on 3D art.
  • {{PD-art|PD-old-100}} This was until recently ideal license: {{PD-old-100}} for the original painting and {{PD-art}} for the digitization. Lately there is also higher emphasis on additional US license.
  • {{PD-art|PD-old-100-1923}} this is equivalent for {{PD-scan|PD-old-100-1923}} on books and would be preferred to the previous one since it also clarify US legal status. However It is not clear to me what does it mean that painting was published before 1923? From previous discussions being published in a book qualifies, maybe public display? And how would we know which paintings were "Published" and when? So I add this one only if I can verify the publication claim. Reference with publication details should be required.
  • {{PD-art-100}} - I think it is the same as {{PD-art|PD-old-100}}
  • {{PD-old-100}} - This one is fine if you
  • {{PD-Art-two-auto|1788}} - That one seems great for images of authors who died less than 100 years ago. If you know something about publication date. --Jarekt (talk) 04:06, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

PS : I also found {{self|PD-old-100}}, which seems completely absurd to me... is it a "real" license ? --Hsarrazin (talk) 11:09, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

It might mean that it is self made image where original is in PD and user have chosen not to add his own digitization license. Either way {{Self}} and {{PD-old-100}} do not go together.--Jarekt (talk) 04:06, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
OK, thank you, that was what I deduced more or less
Il will use {{PD-Art-100}} for most paintings, and {{PD-Art|PD-old-100-1923}} when it's an engraving and I have publication date (which is the majority of the artworks I worked on recently, since they are from late 18e or early 19e)
Hope I do a not too bad work converting to {{Artwork}} too ;) --Hsarrazin (talk) 18:38, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
I just found that the equivalent to {{PD-old-100-1923}} for art would be {{PD-Art/1923|100}}
and the equivalent to {{PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=XXXX}} would be {{PD-Art/1923|deathyear}}

- it would be much easier to find the right license if the structure of the template was the same   --Hsarrazin (talk) 11:11, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Wrong authority control

The Giuseppe Bruno in the page Category:Giuseppe Bruno your bot indentified is the wrong one: he is the cardinal who died in 1954, whereas the category is currently devoted to the photographer who died in 1904. Best wishes --User:G.dallorto (talk) 10:41, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

It seems like Category:Giuseppe Bruno had Category:1954 deaths (since 2009) and my bot dig out {{Authority control}} for Giuseppe Bruno who died in 1954. I was a little puzzled by this edit until I noticed that in 2011 en:Giuseppe Bruno was a page of the Giuseppe Bruno who died in 1954. The bot worked exactly as designed but I guess it is a classic case of Garbage in, garbage out. --Jarekt (talk) 20:30, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Your bot and wikilinks in {{Creator}}

Hello Jarekt,

I continue to check creators, and in the meantime, I also create "missing" creators as I find them… but I also found a way to easily add them on all works they did, using CatScan to dig them… which is long, but should be better for the presentation of all works

Do you think your bot would be able to "dig" the wikilinks in the "Home Page" of the creator to make "SwitchLang" links... automatically ?

I must recognize I tried to do it manually a few times, but it's a really tiresome work, especially when the creator has more than 5-6 wikilinks {{wink)…

--Hsarrazin (talk) 20:41, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Yes I can do it, and my bot did add few thousands of them. I was thinking about working on that code a bit more and running it again. I usually try to add at least one interwiki link, and wait for the bot to do the rest. In the mean time, you can also check Help:Creating multilingual tags with interwiki links for hints on how to create "SwitchLang" links faster. --Jarekt (talk) 20:56, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Yes our paths cross a lot on Commons. I am involved in a tiny fraction of technical stuff on Commons, but each of your questions is related to something I know well (reminds me of en:Q & A (novel) I read lattely). The file you got trouble with was uploaded by me and I do a lot of maintenance of {{Other date}} which was misbehaving. I also do a lot of work with updating and using interwiki links, and I happen to write Help:Creating multilingual tags with interwiki links which sounded like the answer to your question.

pigeon breeds related template

Hallo Jarekt, are you busy for now or are you able to spare some time?

I try to get my first "real" template together. So far I do have

I am a little lost with User:PigeonIP/Template:ELRT. The only parameter is the number of the List of Entente Européenne Pigeon Breeds (that refers to EE-List of the breeds of fancy pigeons (ELFP)).

Could you take a closer look at that? I'd appreciate it. Best regards, PigeonIP (talk) 09:47, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I fixed a few things. Lets move it into the template namespace. --Jarekt (talk) 16:07, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Wow, thanks.
Would it be good to integrate the link to Commons:List of Entente Européenne Pigeon Breeds into User:PigeonIP/Template:ELRT/link, too? So far there are "only" two languages. Changes (I hope not) would be easy to do.
Is it possible to integrate categorisation into the template? Or should they be done by hand, like mentioned in the notice of User:PigeonIP/Template:ELRT? --PigeonIP (talk) 16:55, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
I think link to Commons:List of Entente Européenne Pigeon Breeds is fine as it is. As for categorization, It should not be handled by a template: it is very confusing by others and normal tools for editing categories do not work. Also you can not subcategorize, etc. The only categories that are OK to add by such template would be some maintenance categories, for example listing instances when template is used with missing or incorrect ID. --Jarekt (talk) 17:15, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Set to work in Category:Thuringian White Bib
Do we need to create Template:ELRT/doc? --PigeonIP (talk) 17:40, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Yes, that is where you can get into details on the purpose, how to use the template and how to categorize related files. --Jarekt (talk) 17:48, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
OK. Thank you very much. You helped a lot. Maintenance categories may get useful some day. But I do hope they won't get in constant requisition. First the template has to get introduced properly into categories. ;) --PigeonIP (talk) 18:02, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

if you need a bot assistance ask at Commons:Bots/Work requests. My bot is preoccupied at the moment, but others might be able to help. --Jarekt (talk) 18:06, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I don't know, if a bot would help. To start I have my list to complete and work with and to adjust categorie-names, if needed. Later it would be appreciated to look for breeds without an EE-grouping or without a country of origin. But that will take some time. --PigeonIP (talk) 20:27, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Jarektbot edit summary

Jarektbot edit summaries are going wrong somehow in certain cases saying just "Wikipedia python library", other times giving the right "copying authority control" message. See here. Thanks for the good work of the bot. Rd232 (talk) 16:51, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I noticed that, but it seems rare enough that I did not stop the bot to fix it. It seems to only affect some edits of Creator templates, and I did those separately. I am eager to be done with the current run, which went for over 2 weeks so far. --Jarekt (talk) 17:04, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Polish coins

Hi Jarekt. There are about 50 Polish coin images in Category:Copyright violations. Can you take a quick look at them? Thanks for your time. INeverCry 05:27, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

According to Commons:Currency#Poland and Commons:Deletion requests/Money of Poland they should be deleted, which is unfortunate since the law seems to say that they are in PD (per {{PD-Polishsymbol}}) and someone from Polish Bank claims on bank website that they hold copyrights to all the money. Based on that one unofficial statement we deleted all the images of Polish currency. --Jarekt (talk) 13:17, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

signaling a problem with Category creation help

Hello Jarekt,

Hope you had a nice merry Christmas :)

When creating a category home page for a new creator, I noticed an error on the "automatic" code created when clicking on "people" (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:HS&action=edit&preload=Commons:Categories/preload/people&editintro=Commons:Categories/editintro/people)

The code automatically created is {{subst:#ifexist:Creator:{{PAGENAME}}|{{Creator:{{subst:PAGENAME}}}}}}, while, it should be {{#ifexist:Creator:{{PAGENAME}}|{{Creator:{{subst:PAGENAME}}}}}} - I t fested it a few times before finding the "right" code that effectively inserts the "creator" template in the page   - the first "subst" is not necessary, and prevents the code to work correctly.

Thank you for what you can do to it, and if you can't, for transmitting it to someone who can…

and a big coffee, to help you recover from too much feasting !! Hsarrazin (talk) 18:23, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

... as for me, I'm on herbal tea for the next three days

Fixed [17] I have never noticed the "People" link on the . It sure is useful.--Jarekt (talk) 17:06, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

and another problem with {{Creator}}

when adding {{creator:Hieronymus Bosch|workshop of}} on File:Workshop of J. Bosch Heilwig van der Rullen and Her Daughters with Saint Mary Magdalen.jpg there is an "Expansion depth" category appearing in the catogories (while it's not there without the "workshop of") - the problem appears with "French" preferences, I did not test other languages, but I guess it's the same kind of problem as last week with {{Other date}}.

Since you very successfully corrected it, I let you try an see what is the problem

I sincerely hope I'm not giving you too much work and trouble...--Hsarrazin (talk) 21:18, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

I do not know how to fix it. Expansion limit issues often do not follow much logic, that I can detect. A useful tool in diagnosing expansion limit issues is that if you right-click on the page and ask to "view page source" (in firefox) you can look at the html code and somewhere there is section like
<!--
NewPP limit report
Preprocessor visited node count: 10378/1000000
Preprocessor generated node count: 92641/1500000
Post-expand include size: 84603/2048000 bytes
Template argument size: 48116/2048000 bytes
Highest expansion depth: 36/40
Expensive parser function count: 10/500
-->
which has "Highest expansion depth" statistics. So if you comment out parts of the code and preview you can find the templates that give you trouble. --Jarekt (talk) 17:56, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
I did not completely understand your explanation…
There is no problem to view the page source, AND find the code you give, but HOW can I use it to diagnose the pb ? (in fact, I have Highest expansion depth: 41/40 on "creator" template), but I do not understand what I can do next - what do you mean by "comment out parts of the code" - do you mean in the image description or in the template ? - I will try and give you as much info as I can, but I don't know exactly HOW to do it   --Hsarrazin (talk) 09:05, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
At this point I am also mostly experimenting, so I am not clear because it is not clear to me either. However what I meant was that you can comment out or temporarily delete parts of the wikicode (like some templates, etc.); press "preview"; and check the expansion depth. That way you can try to narrow down which template is the one causing trouble. You can also copy some problematic template to your personal sandbox and probe it there. That is the only way I know how to debug expansion depth errors. --Jarekt (talk) 14:21, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

And now, for something completely different

As the "Monty Python" would have said, long, long time ago (I've been a fan of their "Flying circus")

I'm trying to systematically add all "new" creators (and all those I encounter) in wikidata, to be assured that all their wikilinks are easily accessible in one place

Do you think there could be an easy way to "check" them as "added to Wikidata", apart of keeping a loooooooonnnnnngggg list in my personal pages ? I thought of something like the possibility to store Wikisource link into the creator template… why not a link to wikidata (with a little icon) ? or would that be better placed in the "home" category ?

or maybe, in the "Authority control" ? (after all, that's what it will be  )
or a category ? a template ?

Do you think it would be a good suggestion on the "Village Pump", or is it too soon ? we could certainly count on Tpt's help, who is admin here, on wikisource and on wikidata, and very good programmer (he's the author of some "interwikislurp" script there) --Hsarrazin (talk) 09:05, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

I am fine with adding wikidata parameter to Creator templates and creating some maintenance categories to go with it (if possibly useful), and displaying the wikidata icon. I am also fine with adding it to Authority control templates, since most of those are in categories without creator templates. The only, thing that gives me pause is that I do not know how will Commons wikidata interwiki data in the future. Currently Commons has interwiki links to Wikipedias, however wikipedias do not link to Commons through interwikis. Commons is not one of the interwiki links in wikidata. So I am not sure how will we add wikidata interwiki links. It would be good to know so whatever we do in the short term does not interfere with stuff we will be doing long term. I think it would be good to discuss it on Village Pump and add a link to that discussion on d:Wikidata:Project chat. --Jarekt (talk) 14:44, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Problem with VIAF Importer

I recently noticed a pb with the script that allows to update Authority data. I don't know if it's a disfunction on Commons or on VIAF (probably Commons, since when I launch the search directly on VIAF, it works correctly).

When clicking on the link "Add Authority control" on some Creators, the results seem OK, but if you click on the links and look at the "VIAF" label of the links, there is a pb : for example, try updating Creator:Wal,_A.J._van_der and look at the links that appear… and then, launch the search directly in VIAF…

I could not find what triggers the error, since VIAF search is OK on some creators, and not on some others… :( I will try and give you as many infos as I can find --Hsarrazin (talk) 23:13, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

I asked about it here. --Jarekt (talk) 18:51, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
