A new tool made by Tpt - for LangSwitch "from" Wikidata

Hey, check this d:User_talk:Tpt#liens_Wikidata_et_Commons - I

I do not understand french and I am java script challenged. How do we use it? can it be part of a template? --Jarekt (talk) 18:54, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Excuse my french (pun intended) - I'm switching from french to english and english to french constantly, so sometimes, I use the wrong language with the person I'm writing to.
It's a "personal" script - You just copy/paste it in your common.js, and then, when editing (in all namespaces) you'll have a tennisball icon in your "Advanced tools" editing tool... by clicking on it, and pasting the wikidata # (without Q), it will calculate the "LangSwitch" for the creator (or other information you wish to "LangSwitch" using wikidata) - very easy, and it hels very much for articles with chinese, japanese, farsi and other exotic alphabet (exotic at least to a latin-alphabet contributor).
if the community is OK, and maybe after a few improvements, it could be transformed into a "gadget"…
Tpt is very nice, and very efficient to build that kind of scripts in a few minutes - he made dozens of them for wikisource, and a few others for wikidata   --Hsarrazin (talk) 18:14, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
By the way, could you please explain me why the addition of a References or a Wikidata field in "Creator" works, or not, depending on the "position" of the field in the template (see [1]) ? and, what are the rules to respect to insert the field without problem ? Thanx --Hsarrazin (talk) 18:40, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

A cup of tea for you!

Thanks for adding the wikidata field in Creators (and Institutions too, but I'lle leave them to somebody else) :) Hsarrazin (talk) 18:00, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

A "cup of tea" because I did not find anything else for after New Year medicine

I found 2 chinese creators that, I think, should be renamed : 黄庭坚 and 苏轼 - would that be in English or in international tranliteration ? (and maybe explain the original contributor that he/she should not use Chinese alphabet for reference informations) - Is that correct ? --Hsarrazin (talk) 18:03, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Connection Commons/Wikidata (and other sites)

Tpt has built a site with the data from creators, pedias, AC and Wikidata (up to date, today) : http://creatorlinks.wmflabs.org/index.php

It should be possible to use it with a bot to automatically update data on Commons. For the moment, there is not really a "Help" written, but you may contact Tpt who will very willingly help you

and a little script, that, pasted in your common.js, will make a link appear on top of "creator" pages, to link directly on the page of the creator on the site :

$( document ).ready( function() {
 if( mw.config.get( 'wgNamespaceNumber' ) == 100 ) {
  mw.util.addPortletLink( 'p-views', 'http://creatorlinks.wmflabs.org/index.php?site=commons&title=' + mw.config.get( 'wgPageName' ), 'creatorLinks' );
 }
} );

I hope this tool will allow you to interconnect easily Commons and Wikidata… the Santa is Tpt, not me

And a very Happy New Year, full of projects and developing wikis… --Hsarrazin (talk) 21:10, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks a lot, I might be able to use it to automatically add wikidata links to many creator pages. May be update other fields too. especially If I use format=json option. --Jarekt (talk) 04:23, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi, I've created for creatorlinks an API endpoint http://creatorlinks.wmflabs.org/api.php that may be more useful than the format=json. It would be amazing if your bot add also to creators links to Wikisource, the Wikidata id and authorities links harvested from VIAF (including the ISNI identifier when it exist in VIAF) from creatorlinks. Tpt (talk) 12:33, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
That will be my next project, which should not be too complicated, but still might take a while since I only have limited time to play with that. I will keep you posted and give you a warning before I start bombarding your website with calls. I will try to get wikisource, wikiquote links and authorities links as well. However I will have to work a little bit on {{Authority control}} update first. --Jarekt (talk) 15:32, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

By definition, an anonymous master hasn't any name

Hello. You want absolutely add the Category:People by name to anonymous painter called "Master of" : but by definition, this is not a their name but a "names of convenience" or "provisionnal name" : so they can't be classified in "people by name" !! So, create another category if you want, but please, use the category wisely !! Thanks. Mel22 (talk) 19:44, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

We have a lot of categories and creator templates for people called "Master of ..." or similar (like Category:Meister von Meßkirch), all it means is that we do not know the real name so people assigned a name. Same thing with names "Painter of ...", like Category:Painter of London B 620. Despite of not knowing their names people often know a lot about such artists, like when and where they worked, etc. They do have biographical articles on Wikipedia (like en:Master of Meßkirch and records in Authority control databases. Why would not we put them in flat category for all the people categories? --Jarekt (talk) 20:33, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
2 pbls : 1st : the name of the category : "People by name" doesn't mean all the people : only the people with their (real) name. 2nd : sometime, the name of convenience is finaly, after more research, not only 1 painter but a group of painters or illuminators (Maîtres de Guillebert de Met for instance), it's sometime an illusion to consider them as 1 people. It is a mental-building of art historians, not always a real people (and art historian frequently never said it is a people but "some works of art that can be aggregate under the name "...". That's why I think it's a pbl to put them into this cat. Mel22 (talk) 23:21, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
"Category:People by name" is a new chosen name of "Category:People by alphabet" but should probably be called "Category:People (flat list)". Whatever its name, it is designed to hold all the categories dedicated to individual people, or all the leaf subcategories of Category:People category tree. It is supposed to be flat so there is no room for splitting it into anonymous and non-anonymous sub sets. The purpose of this hidden category is to help with maintenance tasks performed by bots, and one of the tasks I occasionally do is to check all the Category:Creator template home categories for categories that are not subcategories of Category:People by name, and I manually add Category:People by name to all the categories devoted to a single person. --Jarekt (talk) 02:46, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Auto-categorization?

I saw you reverted my category addition to the template. I can add the categories directly to the page via the bot after its done adding all the templates in a second run. What issues are caused by the auto-categorization? On the en wiki, a lot of stuff is auto-categorized.Smallman12q (talk) 22:47, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

4-5 years ago all the creator templates used autocategorization. Which was causing a lot of problems, when people wanted to organize some artist categories and realize that old categories are not easy to remove. See here, here or Template:Creator/doc (section about "Homecat". Categories added by template are also incompatible with our gadgets like HotCat and cat-a-lot. So the rule of thumb often used is that templates should only be adding hidden maintenance categories but avoid "content" categories. I think the only exception to that rule are Category:Book templates which often use autocategorization. Sorry to make more work for you, but we are trying to keep the structure of the people categories similar so it is less confusing and so it can be analyzed/maintain by bots. --Jarekt (talk) 04:18, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. I'll keep it in mind for future uploads.Smallman12q (talk) 14:51, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

{{Personality rights}}

I'd like to do this task: Commons:Bots/Work_requests#Adding_template. Do you know where exactly the {{Personality rights}} should be placed in a file?Smallman12q (talk) 14:53, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Data news

While waiting (as I told, I'm NOT into any hurry!) for a bot flag for User:Alex brolloBot, stopped into a "Request status: Open, waiting for Community", I'm going ahead into data mining. Some days ago I discovered the magics of data- attributes into any html tag, a clean, effective, server-unexpensive way to store well-organized data into a small "data container". This very promising way is much, much simpler than a formal vCard storing of Infobox-like templates, as Creator and Book. The big advantage is, that original template parameters are wrapped into html of any page, and that they are very easily retrieved from current page in view mode by a one-line-only jQuery script (as a group or one-by-one) or, with a little bit of more coding, from any page of any mediawiki project by a interwiki AJAX call.

Are you interested into this matter? If you are, I'd like to write the code for Book template; or you can take a look into it.wikisource, where both it:s:template:Autore and it:s:template:Intestazione use the trick; ask me for details.

PS: I know that Wikidata is growing, and I'm very happy to let you know that Iwt basic script runs into that project too; this means that Wikidata contens too can be accessed and used by a Iwt call, just as wikipedia data are retrieved and used for that old trick of self-compilation of Creator template. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 00:04, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Bad news... the whole think runs only with clean infobox templates, t.i. templates accepting clean parameters (pure strings without any wikicode). This is a good idea, but it's far from being largely applied... so, my idea turns out useless. I apologyze for wasting your time. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:42, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
Alex, I am not sure if you have noticed but there is a creatorlinks.wmflabs.org now available where with links like http://creatorlinks.wmflabs.org/index.php?site=commons&title=Creator:Francesco_Petrarca one can connect to a database of creators. I am planning to start using it to add links to wikidata and wikisource sites. --Jarekt (talk) 16:15, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Problem with ULAN links (Getty)

Hello Jarekt,

I just corrected the {{Authority control/ULAN}} since, for a few days, it was linking to a "Site maintenance" page instead of the right creator page.

I found the error by comparison with the BNF one - there was one {{{1}}} missing   --Hsarrazin (talk) 21:16, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks --Jarekt (talk) 21:34, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

sure

No problem... yeah I figured the bad interwikis were the source of the problem. Could you add a check to the bot, something like if the English interwiki being used as the basis for the langswitch addition equals an existing creator name other than the one it is editing, then abort? Pretty rare problem all in all. Boo-Boo Baroo (talk) 16:26, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes one can create a separate bot run to collect interwikis where 2 commons categories point to the same wikipedia article. --Jarekt (talk) 16:31, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Little pb with ISNI

Hi Jarekt,

I saw that you launched your bot on appending ISNI to creators :)

I had a pb with Creator:Ernst Ludwig Kirchner - it seems that the template you built does not accept X as last character in ISNI, but it is used in fact.

I checked on ISNI site, "000000012120211X" is the right code.

Do you think you can add the ISNI recuperation in the Add AC script - for the moment, I get it and add it manually ;) --Hsarrazin (talk) 17:59, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

{{Authority control}}
Fixed I did not realized that those numbers can have letters, so I added some formatting (grouping by 4s) that works only on numbers. Thanks for letting me know. --Jarekt (talk) 18:18, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

AWB Module

Hi Jarekt, This may be of interest to you, AWB Template Call. Ganeshk (talk) 05:33, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Struggling about HTML tags data- attributes

I'm testing and testing the issue of data- attributes, if you like take a look to Template:Book/Sandbox which simply calls Book template but adds a set of data- attributes filled with Book parameters data. You can see the result here: User:Alex brollo/Sandbox and you can see the resulting set of data for this page with this simple jQuery instruction:

$(".dati").data()

The result is interesting; coding the parameter values with urlencode:...|WIKI any html tag, or quote, or link is passed to data- parameter with no change; but... this doesn't happen when a Book parameter contains a template (see the field Author); template is expanded before urlencode can do its work.

So:

  1. the trick runs for any infobox-like template but those that are build to manage templates as parameters;
  2. the last ones perhaps could be converten into "clean" templates but this is difficult and painful for largely used templates.

The best way to recover original template parameters seems, by now, to read original raw wikicode of the page with an Ajax call. What's a pity! --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 13:24, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for quite clear explanation - I could actually follow that, although I am quite ignorant about jQuerys and Ajax calls. Let me know if any template modifications would make your life easier. --Jarekt (talk) 16:59, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks to you for interest.
I'm not asking you to change deeply existing templates as Creator and Book. But I encourage you to take into consideration, in following reviews, the principle: "get any code away from template parameters".
I'm discussing this issue into wikitech-l, as I told you, but unexpectedly it seems that no one is really interested about data, but for rendering them.
Anyway: main it.wikisource templates are almost perfectly designed for "clean" paramaters; next step of my work will be to read & import data from Book into MediaWiki:Proofreadpage_index_template, using the experience (that has to be expanded and refined) of tests here about self-filling Creator template from wikipedia data; I'm so slow while developing what's needed that perhaps Wikidata will overwrite the whole thing.... but I enjoy this stuff!--Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 17:23, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Thinking a little more, perhaps there's a simple solution for "author Book field". As you see it's not possible to avoid that data-author was filled with expanded Creator template, but changing deeply the template code. But, couldn't Creator template pop out it's name into some hidden container, so that the lost "plain content" could be easily recovered from data-author field? Imagine something as a mostly simple code <span style="display:none">{{{Name}}}</span> added just at the beginning of Creator code. It would pop out as the first content of template expansion into Book data-author, wouldn't it? --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 07:52, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Every Creator template has a "Linkback" parameter, which is occasionally corrected by a bot. This parameter stores the name of the creator template and is used to provide link back to it for easy editing, see   icon. I can easily wrap <span style="display:none">{{{Linkback}}}</span>. I would not do it on the "name" parameter since in most cases there is a big {{LangSwitch}} template there, see Template:Creator#Examples. Use sandboxes to see if it would work for you. --Jarekt (talk) 13:06, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Good idea! Nevertheless consider that langue templates are expanded, so that I only get back the italian result. Well, if you like to see a "whole" data-storing of a Book + 2 Creator templates, take a new look to User:Alex brollo/Sandbox; the only change I'm been forced to do to a "content page" is, to change Creator:Virgil pointing it to Template:Creator/Sandbox. All other test code is wrapped into two sandboxes, Template:Book/Sandbox and template:Creator/Sandbox. The result is a rather formidable set of urlencoded (some twice urlencoded when nested) data, you can decode values with js statement unescape(value).replace(/_/g," "). I'm almost fully rewarded from the result. :-) --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:04, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Broken microformat

Please see Template talk:Information#Broken microformat, urgently. Andy Mabbett (talk) 22:51, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

See my reply there. You are much more knowledgeable about microformats than I am. If you can modify Template:Information/sandbox the way you like it, I will make sure to roll it out. Also Why is it so urgent, I seem to have broken it a year ago? --Jarekt (talk) 03:01, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Your dancing with Wikidata

I see that you have somehow started to add wikidata information to Creator: ns pages. At enWS we could do with the logic and skills so we could start to think about adding such data to our corresponding Author: ns, and presumably other bits and pieces. I am only lightly watching D: as other duties keep me distracted, and my head doesn't align with their metadata <eyeroll>. Some guidance or thoughts to assist would be marvellous. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:02, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

I do not follow wikidata as closely as some, but I am trying to keep an eye on it. I did a run to do Template_talk:Creator#Mass_addition_of_wikidata_codes using creatorlinks.wmflabs.org database and added wikidata links to 1/2 of creator templates (also added many wikisource and some wikiquote links). But at the same time I so far did not support addition of wikidata to {{Authority control}} template. I hope that eventually wikidata will include commons, wikisource and other wikilinks and most categories in commons will have link to wikidata provided by the software. Same might be true for Wikisource. Since if wikisource interwiki links are handled by wikidata than there is no need for independently adding them to pages. With creator pages I thought that they might be useful: as a link and possibly in the future to store data about the authors and links to other wikipadias and other projects. --Jarekt (talk) 03:57, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Greater minds are there and aware of the issue, and I will crawl back into my hole, under my rock. Thx.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:30, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
I am not saying leave it to others. I would suggest working within wikidata community to make sure it is Wikisource or Commons friendly. However I am weary of spending a lot of effort on something which might be replaced soon by better integration between Wikidata and other wikimedia websites. --Jarekt (talk) 13:56, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

JarektBot on it.wiki

Hi, little question about your job on it.wiki: your bot follow alphabetical order? I ask this because I want start to delete interlink and I suppose that now I can delete interlink from all the pages that starts for "A" --ValterVB (talk) 22:46, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

It is alphabetic order based (I think) on DefaultSort, so mostly by the last name and sometimes by the first name. Is your bot just deleting interwiki or doing some more tasks to verify them with wikidata. I could easily add few lines to the code to delete interwiki links, if that would be helpful. --Jarekt (talk) 03:38, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
I check that every interlink are on Wikidata with the same "Q number". Thanks for your help. --ValterVB (talk) 06:02, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello, a little display bug on "Creator"

Hello Jarekt,

I found a little display bug on Creator:Paul Acker - on "default", I put the Cat, since there is no pedia page.

When previewing, it's OK, but after saving, the name does not appear. Can you please see what happens here ?

Thank you :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 08:31, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

I changed the order, default to first place [2], know it works. --PigeonIP (talk) 08:57, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
That would have been problem with {{LangSwitch}}. However I can not reproduce it anymore, see User:Jarekt/b. --Jarekt (talk) 14:05, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Advice

Hi Jarekt. Can you take a look at this? Should this user be blocked? Thanks for your time. INeverCry 03:41, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

He's also made the same threat at User talk:Túrelio#Seigokan Portugal Uploads. INeverCry 03:46, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Never mind. I found Commons:Village pump/Proposals/Archive/2011/09, and I guess no block is called for. I've told him what steps to take in regard to the file linked above, and I'll let Turelio respond to him about the threats as he sees fit. INeverCry 03:56, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Edit conflict.... Per Commons:Village_pump/Proposals/Archive/2011/09#Legal_threats w:WP:NLT is not part of COM:BLOCK, but he should know that it is a likely possibility. I think we should talk to the guy, and figure out what his grievances are. Than we might be able to help him either understand what happened or if he has a valid point than bring some images back.
I explained about the file he asked me about on my talk. These were tagged by Turelio, hence the threat on his talk. The problem seems to be a lack of understanding of copyright and authorship, etc. INeverCry 04:07, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Template:PermissionOTRS

Hi Jarekt. I just reverted your edits of today on this template (here) as it broke the template (it didn't recognize the ticket numbers at all anymore). Trijnsteltalk 20:08, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

I was just thinking of doing the same. I tested the template at Template:PermissionOTRS/sandbox but I think I need much more Template:PermissionOTRS/testcases before I do it again. --Jarekt (talk) 20:30, 15 February 2013 (UTC)Dzień dobry.

Zabytki

Chciałbym podkreślić że zostaje to przypisywane do kategorii "Cultural heritage monuments in Poland with known IDs" a przecież jakiegokolwiek numeru rejestru brakuje. Jeżeli już to należałoby to dopisać do "Cultural heritage monuments in Poland with unknown IDs" gdyż data decyzji "20 grudnia 1982r" i "20 maja 2009" nie jest przecież kolejnym numerem rejestru zabytków. 80.171.88.243 14:15, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Yea, Some old friend I don't know his name but he was an old friend of my grandmother gave me this copy photo of this scene and I was hoping to use it, although, it should may have been in a Polish wikipedia or a useful tool about warfare weaponry; any way if there is a possible way to keep it in a more resourceful type in weaponry warfare category, I would be satisfied, if any thing else does not come to mind , thanks anyway.--External Radiance (talk) 14:31, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

... another little problem… with {{Cite book}}

See here - the date of publication (1833) is indicated in the bib ref. but does not display in the Reference field.

That template is far too complicated for me   - would you be kind enough to see what is the problem, or tell it to the admin who maintains this template (very useful, and, with Zotero, a blessing) :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 20:43, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Either someone fixed it or it displays just fine now.--Jarekt (talk) 04:07, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Hooo… I see it - the placement of the date is not conform to what I'm used to, so I simply "did not see it", because I was looking for the date after the publisher's name   --Hsarrazin (talk) 22:15, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Replace OTRS with PermissionOTRS

Dear Jarekt. Please let me know where has been discussed that the OTRS template has to be replaced. Thank you. --Krd 08:22, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

I assume it's the unification/merge of three or four different OTRS templates into a single template covering all needs. The older ones should have been deprecated for some time now. --Denniss (talk) 12:21, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
I assume the same, but I also would have objected against doing 30k+ edits to replace {{OTRS}} by {{PermissionOTRS}}. At least I like to know if it has been considered to make it a redirect without need for such massive replacements. --Krd 12:37, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Lately I was trying to clear up the thicket of all the competing and undocumented templates related to OTRS. Document the template parameters and implement proper error checking to capture all cases with nonsense input parameters. {{PermissionOTRS}} is by far the most used and the most basic one so I replaced (or still replacing) all instances of {{OTRS Permission}}, {{OTRSPermission}}, {{PermissionOTRS-ID}}, {{Разрешение OTRS}}, {{Crediti}}, {{РазрешениеOTRS}}, {{Permission OTRS}}, {{Otrs}} and {{ConfirmationImageOTRS}} with {{PermissionOTRS}}. Those templates either called or redirected to {{OTRS}} or {{PermissionOTRS}}, and they should be retired. {{OTRS}} is more complicated. You can not just redirect it {{PermissionOTRS}}, since it has a lot of logic trying to work with many different forms of possible inputs. Even in the most basic case it takes many IF statements to figure out which input parameter is the ticketNumber and pass it to {{PermissionOTRS}}. At the moment I am replacing {{OTRS}} with some combinations of input parameters with {{PermissionOTRS}}. But you are right, I could skip the most common uses which are the same as {{PermissionOTRS}}, and rewrite {{OTRS}} as redirect. --Jarekt (talk) 13:50, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
I'd be happy if it could be done this way, as you are currently bombing my watchlist with edits that look avoidable. Thank you. --Krd 14:15, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
OK, I stopped it. I will look into ways to do it with less edits. --Jarekt (talk) 15:01, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
I am running again, but only for {{OTRS}} templates that have 2 or more unnamed parameters. --Jarekt (talk) 04:31, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Creator and Category

As you know, I was thinking about Creator and Book. Now, while discussing Creator as a main "bio infobox" in Commons, we found that it's great for Authors, but it can't be used for people that is not an author; in this case, Category is presenly a better data container, and it is necessary for Authors too. So, coming from wikisource, nsAutore, it's perhaps better to come into category than into Creator page. But best users would like to create a Creator template if lacking. So, I think that it would be a good idea to add a Creator link into the top of the Category page; if red, it's simple to click it and to create the needed code (someone is using my tools....).

So, if you agree with such an idea, I'm going to add a call to Creator page by bot in every Category:[Author] for authors listred into it.source. Do you agree? --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:36, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

How about adding {{Creator possible}} template to such categories, as in Category:Giovanni Boccaccio? --Jarekt (talk) 15:51, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Wow! I didn't know this self-explicative template - so easy to add to Category pages. Is perhaps some bot job to replace it with a regular {{Creator}} as soon as a Creator page exists? Well, even if it isn't, it can be built. :-)
I'm ready to add this template to author-related categories lacking a Creator template by my unflagget bot User:Alex brolloBot (as a test, but useful, job). --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 18:58, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
I am not surprised you did not know this template. I wrote it after your initial post. ;) I have a script to add creator templates to categories, if missing. I can easily add removal of this template if found on creator home-category. --Jarekt (talk) 19:07, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Dawne majątki i dobra rycerskie w Polsce

Ostatecznie nie tworzymy kategorii "Kirchen in Poland" czy też "Kościoły in Poland" tylko "churches in Poland".

--Jarekt (talk) 03:01, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
zobacz Commons:Village_pump#Category:Ritterg.C3.BCter --Jarekt (talk) 03:26, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Polski.
Przesniosłem wszystko do odpowiednich kategorii. Kategorie "Former Rittergüter in Poland", "Former Rittergut in Poland" i "Former knight estates in Poland" możnaby teraz skasować. 80.171.132.14 11:15, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Nationality & Gender into Creator

See Creator:Maria Pezzé-Pascolato, Nationality=it Gender=f, italian rendering says "italiano" instead of expected "italiana": I tried to follow the templates and subtemplates code but it is too hard for me. Where's the pitfall? --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 10:58, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Look at all the other language versions where it works: {{CountryAdjective/ru}}, {{CountryAdjective/pl}}, or {{CountryAdjective/fr}}. They all have code that looks like this: ital{{#switch: {{{2|}}} |f=ienne|s=o|#default=ien}} (this one come from french). As you can see in Template:CountryAdjective/doc parameter 2 can take four values: m (male, default), f (female), n (neutral), and s (special case). So the above french version can become: italienne (f), italien (m & n) or italo (s). The "s" option is for 2 nationality combos like as in " italo-française", created by {{NationAndOccupation|1=f|2=IT/FR|3=|lang=fr}}. It seems to me that something similar need to be written for {{CountryAdjective/it}}. --Jarekt (talk) 12:38, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

a small modification to {{Creator}}

Hello Jarekt,

Could you please modify the automatic link to wikidata from wikidata.org to www.wikidata.org, because the first option works for linking, but prevents from editing the page on wikidata (known bug) ?

Thank you very much :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 14:02, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

{{Creator}}, uses standard link like [[d:Q35548]], I do not have any say on the format of the link. Inter-project linking through external link mechanism, using single brackets like http://wikidata.org/wiki/Q35548 is usually discouraged. I also seem to be able to edit wikidata pages, no matter how I got there. There was discussion about it at Template_talk:Creator#Wikidata_hyperlink, but I am still quite confused about it. --Jarekt (talk) 14:18, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
I emailed around about it and apparently it is a known bug bugzilla:45005, where "the pages are editable but the edit doesn't actually save. It's one of the main pain points we have atm. Fix waiting for review and deployment by ops". It sounds like it will be fixed "soon". --Jarekt (talk) 14:52, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
Yes, indeed… I chatted with Lydia on IRC about that bug, and it's a real PITA, that they don't understand how it happened. Seems to be at the same time temporary AND random… the nightmare for maintenance   - in fact, on some Creators, the link allows editing, on others it doesn't, and after some time, it may be the other way round 8( - thanx anyway, --Hsarrazin (talk) 20:04, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

remove - from degrees in {{Location}} template

Pozdrawiam, Plushy (talk) 19:52, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Rzeczywiście, dosyć mało użyteczna "poprawka". Pracowałem nad reperacja plików w Category:Pages with malformed coordinate tags i jakieś 300 plików miało minusy w {{Location}}, prawie wszystkie dodane przez user:File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske). Tagging

Hi Jarek, please check the history of a file before you start slapping it with templates. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 20:48, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

I sometimes search for files with no license (we have quite a lot of them), and than I have list of few hundred files with no license. What should be the best way to deal with them? I manually verify that they have no license, fix wikicode issues that might make parser fail if needed, but history check would take much longer. I guess a better solution than "slapping it with template" would be a maintenance category like Category:Media without a license: needs history check. --Jarekt (talk) 21:08, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
By the way, the license of this file makes no sense it is probably {{PD-US}} not CC. --Jarekt (talk) 21:14, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

fix {{Location}}

Hi. Thanks for fixing those you did fix, but I wouldn't call removing the tag completely fixing it. If you see any other images of mine (they'll have MMB in the name) that lack coordinates, please let me know and I'll sort it. I think I did all the ones you pointed out. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:34, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

There are many oddballs in Category:Pages with malformed coordinate tags and each requires something else. Sometimes there is enough information to decipher the meant location and sometimes there is not. There were only few files with no coordinates at all, so I do not think I will run into more of those. Sorry about strange edit summary but I was editing using AWB program where you can set a single summary for bunch of files. --Jarekt (talk) 12:46, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Protected template {{Information field}}

Hi Jarekt, IMHO it would join better to the other templates, esp. {{Information}}, and be anyway more userfriendly, when the four parameters can be written also with capital initials. The change to allow both is trivial; if you agree and have no time to do the coding I can give it to you:

<includeonly><tr valign="top">
<td style="background: #ccf; text-align: right; padding-right: 0.4em; width: 15%; font-weight:bold; {{{style|{{{Style|}}}}}}" class="{{{class|{{{Class|}}}}}}">{{{1|{{{name|{{{Name|}}}}}}}}}</td>
<td>
{{{2|{{{value|{{{Value|}}}}}}}}}</td>
</tr></includeonly><noinclude>

{{documentation}}

</noinclude>

After this expansion I will expand the documentation. sarang사랑 08:04, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Request for help with Aaron Swartz

Hi there. Thanks so much for all you do with JarektBot (talk · contribs).

Can you please use the bot to help update the various interwiki links and especially the other Authority control links at Category:Aaron Swartz and Creator:Aaron Swartz?

Thank you for your time, -- Cirt (talk) 13:07, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you very much. Now if there were only a way to link Wikidata back here with Commons and make it so that Wikidata also updates for the existence of sister website project pages? -- Cirt (talk) 13:25, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
I added links to Wikidata and library of congress. Unfortunately, it is still technically impossible to use wikidata in more automatic fashion to update out templates. May be in a half a year? --Jarekt (talk) 13:45, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
That would be really nice, how can we go about getting it there in half a year? -- Cirt (talk) 14:42, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Wikidata development is moving very fast. I assume that in next half a year to a year we will be able to use wikidata data in templates. Also with rolluout of Lua programing support inside templates, we might be able to do much more. --Jarekt (talk) 14:47, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Wow, that's simply amazing, very encouraging, thank you. -- Cirt (talk) 14:48, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

About wikidata link

I loaded into it.wikisource and it.wikivoyage the "interlink tool" [14], then I imported it here in User:Alex brollo/common.js. I retouch code, so that it runs into Creator and Category too, simply ignoring namespaces; in brief, it adds a link do Wikidata into tool section of sidebar, but - adding two rows - it adds too the whole "wikidata entity object" do $(".ourDiv").data(), a "data container" that my scripts create here into Commons.

So, if I now go to Creator:Ugo Foscolo or Category:Ugo Foscolo, I see a Wikidata link into sidebar, and I can read any label, link to wikipedia, description, alias wrapped into $(".ourDiv").data("wikidata") object. Try if you like! You will have into the page the same data that would be recovered by a bot .get() method from a wikidata page. If I'm not wrong, data are ready also when creating a new page, since the script runs searching wikidata with wgTitle content. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 22:35, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks I am using User:Alex brollo/common.js script now. --Jarekt (talk) 18:13, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm really too busy to drag into the matter, but I presume that this could solve the trouble of CreatorMake(), since now the real, current names of authors into wikipedias can be found. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 19:11, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
I edited a little bit the script, now it saves data into $("body").data(). --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 11:55, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

File:Meda-Stemma.jpg

Hi Jarekt, I oringinally uploaded that file under a Non-free with permission: the Mayor of Meda gave Wikipedia projects the right to display the coat of arms (OTRS:2008030510016721).

I uploaded it five or six years ago on some Wiki that allowed that type of files. I really don't know why was it moved on Commons, but it must be deleted and recovered only on the projects where copyrighted files are allowed.

Can you help me with it? I'm a it.Wiki sysop and I will start recovering the local file. Thanks for the notice,--DoppioM 14:51, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

On it.Wiki we are using the it:File:Meda-Stemma.png version. No need of the ".jpg" version there.--DoppioM 14:59, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Category:William F. Mahoney

Hello Jarekt, I have absolutely no idea what we need this category for. There is one single image in it and there won't be more. We have more than 200 images in the category of the Illinois Representatives - why had there to be this category for this person? Sorry, I really don't understand this at all. --Scooter (talk) 20:26, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

I did not look at category of Illinois Representatives, and did not realize I was giving this guy special treatment. But in case of images related to people I usually prefer to have them with a separate category for each person, that way we can add interwiki links to the category, and have already well defined home for any other image related to that person. I often add such categories, is I am doing anything else to such image. --Jarekt (talk) 20:39, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Could you please explain...

My watchlist shows Jarektbot has tagged a bunch of images that passed flickrreview. Is this a problem with the bot, with flickrreview, or with the original uploads?

I checked your images and they never had license template, which should have been flagged after the upload. Flickerreview I guess only verified that license on flickr was cc-by-2.0, which is compatible with Commons. However it failed to notice that the template license is missing from the file. Feel free to add the license and remove file from that category. Read more at Category:Media without a license: needs history check. --Jarekt (talk) 03:08, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

wikilinks and wikidata

Hi Jarekt,

Since wikidata was deployed on all pedias, a few days ago, nearly all wikilinks have been removed from pedias, preventing "Sum-it-up" to work properly, as I mentioned on Magnus' talk page.

What do you think would be the best solution, as long as Commons is not taken into account on wikidata ? a tool like the one for Creators ? or is it not worth it ? Thanks for your help in any case :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 19:22, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

I never figured out how to use sum-it-up. I tried it a few times but it never did anything, that I could tell. I am not even sure what was it suppose to do. --Jarekt (talk) 20:30, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello, could you check this issue made by the bot you manage. Sorry my English is not that good and I am translating with google translator. thanks --Jcfidy (talk) 11:09, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello, some file description pages have recently been changed by this bot like here: Surtseyan_Eruption-numbers.svg with the summary "fix language template", where the exclamation marks for cells of wikitable are misinterpreted. Regards -- Mapmarks (talk) 11:14, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
I tested the replacement pattern on a lot of files before and during the run. And although both of those bot edits were not right - in both cases the bots follow the same pattern that worked just fine in 99% of the cases. I randomly checked bunch more edits and they all seem fine. I guess it is just a case of very unusual uses of the language templates, in the first place. --Jarekt (talk) 19:22, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank You Jarekt -- Mapmarks (talk) 15:56, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

My bot has been flagged

Happy to let you know (but perhaps you already know) that my bot has been flagged. I notified flagging into it.wikisource; I'm very busy in thehe weeks with lots of difficult tasks, but it.source community will submit some work to the bot. The first serious work will a review of File: pages for djvu books, converting Information into Book template; can you link please some excellent, recently updated djvu-related Book template to use it as a model? Thanks.

As soon as my experience grows sufficiently, I'll help you with some task if I'll can. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 17:39, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

That is a great news. Converting Information into Book template for djvu (and PDF) books is a worthy task, may be combined with creating and adding creator templates for writers. A File:La stipe tributata alle divinità delle Acque Apollinari.djvu is a good example. Extra thing to verify would be to add -1923 to license templates if book was published before 1923, and use PD-old-100-1923 or PD-old-auto-1923 licenses instead of PD-old and PD-old-70 if possible. --Jarekt (talk) 15:08, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. :-)
First step has been to get the list of File: pages, related to Indice: (Index:) pages into wikisource, browsing their wiki code and building a list of items using Information template instead of Book template (they are more or less 500). Then I'll parse as deelpy as I can contents of File: pages, retrieving any information (Information template fields; categories; licences; remaining text); I'll do the same on related Indice: pages (much simpler since Indice: pages is strictly structured); then I'll try to merge data into new File: pages wrapping into a Book template how much data I can. Are perhaps you interested into python scripts I'll write and use? As you know, my style is very rough, so I'm far from bold about them. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 05:49, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
I'll make an extraordinary effort :-) and I'll store python scripts into User:Alex brolloBot/Python scripts. There are many unsolved dependancies, but the first result is to get a Book class, where all relevant data (parsed content of Information, Book, MediaWiki:Proofreadpage_index_template; File: description page categories and PD-templates) are parsed and decently easy to retrieve. Just a first step. A question: I see that PD-templates sometimes are loaded into Permission field of Information template; sometimes they are loaded into the page body. What's the best place to store them? --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 17:28, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
  • About the python scripts: my are rough too (see Special:PrefixIndex/User:JarektBot/ as I made little effort to clean them up. But I learn a lot from scripts others were kind enough to publish, so it is a right thing to do to publish my too.
  • As for your bot work; If you take approach to collect the data from pages, review it, and add Book template. Than you might find some of my AWB modules useful, like User:JarektBot/AWB_Modules#Extract_categories_and_save_them_to_the_file or User:JarektBot/AWB_Modules#Scrape_creator_data_off_from_EN_Wikipedia_articles. I find AWB a very useful tool for scraping (retrieving) data from a lot of pages. I would collect the data into a text file, open it in Excel or other spreadsheet (carefully as not to loose international letters), process the data somehow and add results back to the files using python script (I can publish some that I used).
  • About PD templates, either in files themselves or in the Book templates. Both approaches work, but I always prefer to add them directly to the files, that way nobody can change the license of a file without a record of that in the file history. However, I usually did not bothered to change from one system to the other.
  • If you work with book page files you might want to add {{BookNaviBar}} to {{Book}} templates and "prev" / "next" parameters to individual files as done here. That way it is easier to go to next or previous page. --Jarekt (talk) 13:18, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Really I'll try to reduce human editing at a minimum - I hope than most Book templates will be built by scripts themselves, when possible (so I'll try to implement some test to discard difficult/controversial cases). Creator template is much more complex, here data come from multiple sources with additional problem of different spelling of author's name, and I'll not try to fill it by a script, but simply to list authors lacking a Creator template and related pages. The only data I need about Author are the best name (I see that en.pedia is the reference for this) and death date (to apply a proper PD template).
I don't know anything about {{BookNaviBar}}, thanks for suggestion, I'll study the stuff and I'll try to learn by example. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:18, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
I only know (from some days) that AWB exists, and I've been deeply discouraged by the need of using C# to add custom modules. But.... I followed the links to your pages and now I thing that an effort to understand better the stuff is needed! I hope, I'll get some help by you if needed to smooth my first, painfuls steps into the stuff.
A much banal question. I upload sometimes illustrations of books - I just uploaded images into Category:La Italia - Storia di due anni 1848-1849, related to File:La Italia - Storia di due anni 1848-1849.djvu, keeping Intormation template and categorization to a minimum. Only the name of ilustrator is known; no bio data can be retrieved but that he worked in 19° century. Can you link an example of a book with similar illustrations and or an Help page, to be used as a good model to manage illustrations (templates, categorization) and their relations with their source, the book? To fix my previous mistakes and to refine new uploads would be a good job for my bot.:-) --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 05:47, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
About AWB, I rarely use custom modules and only when I can not do something without them. But otherwise it is a very powerful tool which I mostly use for regular expression replacements. You can do edits like this. AWB has a LOT of options but 99% of my AWB work is done through Tab: Options/Find_and_Replace/Advanced_settings and the Skip tab (to define when not to edit). Adding templates or categories can be done through More/Append. I also find Menu: Options/Use_Preparse_mode very useful. If you inspect every edit (non-bot mode) you should probably use your regular account. Using this tool is MUCH faster for me than python, but I usually use it for one time jobs only, like tasks I pick up at Commons:Bots/Work requests.
As for good examples of graphics from a book - you can check this or this category. --Jarekt (talk) 04:32, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

{{GWU-cooperation}}

FYI, I just created {{GWU-cooperation}} and a category for the images from GWB's libraries. We uploaded 8 high-res TIFFs for the editathon tomorrow. If you can, the template probably needs to be fixed to meet Commons' standards, since I don't really understand the localization systen with all the metatemplates. :-) Dominic (talk) 02:18, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

Breaking thru the walls of text blog post

Greetings,

Agreed with your comments on the recent blog post, about replacing " “Category:Painted portraits of women from Spain in national costume” with 5 properties: Painting, portrait, women subjects, Spaniards, and national costume".

We've been discussing similar ideas over on my talk page #LOD - Ford contact sheets, daily diary, artifacts, meeting minutes. I recently thought about shopping websites and how items can sort/search - have you seen those? Zappos is a great example of what I'm thinking.

I got to this because we'll be uploading NARA files from the DPLA soon after they go public, and I think that the NARA materials would get more use with a different search mechanism. Also, since working with a variety of Presidential materials, I find it might be useful to link all the diverse files used/produced in a short period of time (ie a day), to get a sense of the office. I've seen the Wikipedia and Wikimedia time line examples, and they are category based, and for a newbie, not so easily found; the examples in the resulting galleries are not exhaustive or reliable - I've uploaded images that don't come up on time line pages beause that particular category is not inlcuded in the file. Bdcousineau (talk) 23:06, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

I think that at least for time being our search options are limited, as we are stuck with current software. But we can create more categories and galleries organizing data with more detail. For example check out Category:Warsaw Uprising with which I was playing 5-6 years ago. It was organized and categorized by several criteria. One of them "by date" which goes down to the individual days. Another approach would be galleries for each year or month where each gallery is organized day by day. This can extend to other presidents ... etc. We already have Category:Vladimir Putin by day. Bot can be used to categorize the images or create galleries. --Jarekt (talk) 02:41, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the reference Category:Vladimir Putin by day, that will be useful going forward. Bdcousineau (talk) 23:52, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Overcategorization

Hi, I would like to inform you about some overcategorization I have seen made by an user, like this ([16]). I am doing a rollback for images about climbing, I think this is overcategorization, isn't it? User Gildir is doing the same for a lot of other images (just an example: [17]) Cya --Rotpunkt (talk) 17:14, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

That is not what we usually call overcategorization since all those categories are not related to each other. I find most of them mostly useless, but that is just my opinion. Others found them useful and the categories are being kept. I do not think you can stop people from adding this types of categories. Similarly I am annoyed when people categorize holocaust images by shapes of hats worn. --Jarekt (talk) 17:47, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
Ok, thanks! --Rotpunkt (talk) 19:24, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Batch upload

Hi Jarek! It was great meeting you this weekend! Did I remember correctly that you said you did some batch uploads? I have a batch upload request that has been lingering for ages at Commons:Batch uploading/VOA pronunciation sound files. Any chance that you would be interested in helping with this? User:Slowking4 just pinged me about this, so I guess I'm not the only one who's interested.... Thanks! Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:51, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Jen, It was nice to meet you and the rest of the crew. I am in the middle of a few projects, but I can help. The issue is that before the upload I would need to get a list (like Excel) with file locations (or files) and the metadata (word, pronunciation, maybe category or related wikipadia article). The only way I can see how to access the files is by searching for them one by one, or on the daily list. Do you or User:Slowking4 know the way to get or create such list? May be talk with VOA? --Jarekt (talk) 23:31, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

prośba z Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich

Szanowny Panie, Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich poszukuje materiałów graficznych do swojej Wystawy Głównej. Łączę serdeczne pozdrowienia Jan Grądzki jgradzki [at] jewishmuseum.org.pl

Nice to meet you and VIAF gizmo?

Hi it was nice to meet you at the bootcamp over the weekend. Can you tell me how I can find the VIAF matching gizmo you showed me? I should have taken notes. Don't really know my way around Commons yet! Thank you! Mlet (talk) 20:37, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Mlet, It was nice to meet you too 9 a rarity in Wiki world). The code of the gadget can be found at MediaWiki:VIAFDataImporter.js and the help files related to it are at Help:Gadget-VIAFDataImporter. The code is not well maintained and has some known bugs, but it is the best we have. There is also a wikisource version of it here. At some point we should adapt it to Wikidata. --Jarekt (talk) 13:19, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

File:Virgin Sun Airlines.jpg

Hi Jarekt,

your recent changes on that file brought it back to my attention. There seems to be something fishy about it and I'd like to hear your opinion about it:

  • The file was uploaded to en: in 2008
  • I transferred it to Commons using the upload bot in 2010
  • between march and december of 2011, an anonymous user performed a series of changes, removing any connection to the original uploader en:User:Mleyden91, which I undid a day after the last change (missed the earlier changes, though).
  • after that, on the same day, an IP changed the restored reference to en:User:Mleyden91 to link to the non-existing en:User:Mlen91.
  • I tried to contact the original uploader on his/her talk page at en: to see if there's something wrong with the image. I didn't get any response and forgot about the issue (hence, Mlen911 is still being referenced as the author)

I don't have any proof, but I suspect that the uploader at en: may not have been the original author of the photograph and is now trying to wipe his/her tracks instead of simply filing a deletion request or contacting OTRS. The rather low resolution of the file might be an indication that it may have been grabbed from the web, but neither google image search nor tineye deliver any matches dated before the first upload to en: in 2008. (Jep, there are a lot of mays and mights.)

Does this look strange to you too, or am I just being paranoid? Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 12:54, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes it is strange and I restored the original matadata. I do not see any clear evidence of copyright violation so I would assume good faith. I also can not explain why that image was first cought in queries detecting files with no license. --Jarekt (talk) 13:09, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
Well, at the time the bot caught it, the license template was not completely missing but at least kind of broken, with a "]" and a user name missing: [18]. Thanks for fixing it. You are of course right: There is no clear evidence (if any). I guess I'll just keep an eye on this one … Cheers, --El Grafo (talk) 13:55, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Prośba - Szablon dla współpracy z Kancelarią Senatu RP

Witaj, otrzymałem kontakt do Ciebie od Tomka Ganicza, no i piszę z serdeczną prośbą. Boston9 (talk) 21:33, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Zrobione. Pozdrowienia --Jarekt (talk) 03:55, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Hej, wielkie dzięki, szablon jest super! Zgoda na 83 pierwsze zdjęcia (senatorowie obecnej VIII kadencji) została wysłana dzisiaj rano. Powinieneś już ja widzieć w systemie. Jeszcze raz bardzo dziękuję! Boston9 (talk) 10:49, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Jeżeli jednak dodać category:People by name do wszystkich nowych kategorii, to będę Ci bardzo wdzięczny. Pozdrawiam serdecznie Boston9 (talk) 21:17, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
Witaj, poprawiłem kolejność licencji i dodałem interwiki we wszystkich plikach. Jeszcze raz dzięki za pomoc.Boston9 (talk) 21:52, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Czy dodać je do Category:Files provided by Senate of Poland albo dodać do nich szablon współpracy? --Jarekt (talk) 02:47, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Mógłbyś to jakoś oznaczyć/zablokować? Hallo! What do you mean with „Category:Media without a license: needs history check)“? Can you explain it, please? -- Sacha47 (talk) 17:21, 29 May 2013 (CEST)

Sure, what I mean is that this file has no license, but before tagging it with {{No license}} template someone should check the history to check if the file had license before. In case of this file, it probably should use {{PD-old-100}}. See explanation in Category:Media without a license: needs history check and COM:LICENSE for more information. --Jarekt (talk) 17:11, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

Please check

[35] your bot tagging .kml overlays as missing license. --Denniss (talk) 23:08, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

That is strange I excluded all the files with "\" in the name from the list. I searched again and did not find any more files (possibly because they were all corrected). --Jarekt (talk) 01:56, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
Filtered them with AWB and removed from cat, ~40 files. Bot was recently active here as well. Did you exclude / or \ or both? --Denniss (talk) 02:04, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
It was "/" and I managed to exclude "most" subpages. Anyway I am done for the moment with current list of images to tag (see here). --Jarekt (talk) 02:15, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

[36] please check what happened there to a series of files using this tag, one April 22 edit was supposed to fix a license issue but another May 23 edit puts them in the license mising cat. --Denniss (talk) 12:04, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

I changed the Template:Zlib to use modern layout. That should fix the problem. I also removed Category:Media without a license: needs history check from all the files using this template. Thanks. --Jarekt (talk) 12:39, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

Please use your bot to check for and remove files using {{GFDL-con-disclaimer}} in the license check cat, now-resolved double-redirect problem. Strange we don't have a double-redirect fixing Bot here ..... --Denniss (talk) 12:47, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Done --Jarekt (talk) 13:01, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Requests

  • Please do a bot run to check for files both in the license check cat + in one of the daily no license cats and place them in a temporary cat for further investigation. This additional examination should ensure a history check was done on them but just the cat not removed (at least the 27th May cat did contain several of these files without proper check but far too many for a manual search). This bot run should be run two times a week until the license check cat is empty. --Denniss (talk) 09:22, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
See all such files in the box below.
Category:Media_without_a_license:_needs_history_check changed to {{No license}}
{{{1}}}
  • Please do another bot run, searching for files with {{SCD GFDL|migration=relicense}} in the license check cat, this should be replaced by SCD GFDL and GFDL with relicense parameter and the license check cat should be removed. --Denniss (talk) 22:37, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
  Done--Jarekt (talk) 03:50, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Working through the list above (although it doesn't display the images for whatever reason) please remove files using {{User:Captain Scarlet/information}} from the license check cat. Template was lacking the permission field so any license placed there did not show. Template may need further tweaks for standardization. --Denniss (talk) 11:31, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
This seems to be fixed now, as there are no images using {{User:Captain Scarlet/information}} in Category:Media_without_a_license:_needs_history_check. --Jarekt (talk) 18:50, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

To są dokładnie te 83 zdjęcia, które Twój bot uzupełnił o category:People by name. Pozdrawiam serdecznie Boston9 (talk) 18:29, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Template:Cc

Please have a look at this template, you have to use either 1= for license text accompanied with 2= for license code or both sections without 1=/2=, otherwise the template will not work. See example here. Is that something fixable in the template for possible future occurences or should we just fix the images ? --Denniss (talk) 07:29, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

I fixed those images, but you are right it seems like you can not mix name-based and position-based parameters within a template. I do not think that is specific to {{Cc}} template. And it was my edit (related to cleanup of Category:Language templates with no text displayed) that broke it. --Jarekt (talk) 13:07, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Re: ticket:2011101310013458

Hi Jarekt,
actually, I added ticket:2011090410005987 to the images, which was later merged to #2011101310013458 (and the link on the image pages was changed accordingly). As you have seen, the second one containes an authorization for the text, while the first one is an authorization from Lard Buurman regarding the images. At least for the image you linked, the authorization seems to be valid. - Laurentius (talk) 16:09, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Yes, merging the two tickets was probably a bad idea, as they contain different authorization. However, I looked at a few images, and they are uploaded by Iopensa, which was the coordinator of wikiafrica projects, so she will probably be able to fix the problem. I'm writing to her now. - Laurentius (talk) 10:27, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
A new authorization has been provided, and it has been merged to the old ticket, so there is no need to modify the image descriptions. It should be all right now. - Laurentius (talk) 22:50, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Category talk:Language templates with no text displayed

Hi Jarekt. I am not sure if you watch this page. --Leyo 16:21, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

I could eliminate all categories and gallery pages in Category:Language templates with no text displayed except of the two Chinese redirects and two of Multichill's templates. Do you know a solution for any of these? --Leyo 13:58, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
That is quite a heroic effort fixing all those categories and galleries. I gave it a try with the templates, I just hope I did not break those ingestion templates. --Jarekt (talk) 14:23, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I hope that Multichill does not hinder our effort by reverting your edits.
The biggest part of the workload is the files with still more than 10,000 pages. Zhuyifei1999 recently started helping there. --Leyo 14:34, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

You may want to comment under Template talk:Description#Notification of users after your return. --Leyo 19:00, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Good news: 915 file pages are left in the category. Would you want to take care of the remaining Polish ones? --Leyo 08:54, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
There is some magic for the Polish subcategory. ;-) You cleaned it out and now it contains again 69 files… At least the total has decreased to 597. --Leyo 14:59, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
I was expecting that. After I clear it I noticed that bunch of files in Category:Language templates with no text displayed belonged to polish subcategory, while the subcategory was empty. Quite strange. --Jarekt (talk) 15:02, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Boston9 (talk) 22:31, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Wedle {{Anonymous-EU/en}} zdjęcie jest PD "70 years after the work was made available to the public", wedle {{Anonymous-EU/pl}} "prawa autorskie obowiązują przez 70 lat".
  • {{PD-because|released to the public domain by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum}} spełnia wymóg PD a stanach.
No ale teraz mam 100% jasność. [99].
Pozdrowienia --Jarekt (talk) 12:38, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
Kapitalnie, jeszcze raz wielkie dzięki za całą wiedzę:) Boston9 (talk) 12:48, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Dzięki x 2. Otrzymałem tę książkę via Allegro dosłownie wczoraj, i znalazłem w niej najstarsze z publikowanych zdjęć, jakie udało mi się znaleźć (1953). Przywróciłem jednak też dwie pierwsze pozycje. Dzięki też za link do strony Piotra. Qrcze, powinna zostać powołana jakaś Wiki Academy, która zbierałaby całą tą praktyczną wiedzę z Wiki i Commons w formie szkolenia. Cały czas coś nowego i praktycznego. Boston9 (talk) 18:37, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Pozdrawiam. --Jarekt (talk) 11:10, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Template:PD-art-auto-1923

Greetings. I noticed you recently deleted Template:PD-art-auto-1923 as an "unused template". I have frequently used that template for scans of pre-1923 2D works where the date of death of the author is known. Which template should I use instead? Thanks, – Quadell (talk) 12:01, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

There is a lot of confusing combinations of {{PD-Art}}, {{PD-scan}}, {{PD-old}}, {{PD-1923}}, and {{PD-1996}} templates. Including a lot of very rarely used ones. Many combinations use different license text and I am working on unifying them. Part of it is to cut down on number of parallel versions doing exactly the same. In case of {{PD-art-auto-1923}} it was a shortcut for {{PD-art|PD-old-auto-1923}} so it is better to use that license. If you frequently use that template than I assume all {{PD-art-auto-1923}} were replaced with {{PD-art|PD-old-auto-1923}} in your uploads. By the way, I am working on some table of available PD-old templates, You can see it at User:Jarekt/a. I will put a final version in more public place. --Jarekt (talk) 12:16, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. It looks like something like {{PD-art|PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=1937}} will work. That chart you're working on is awfully complicated, but I think it will be very useful once it is clearer. – Quadell (talk) 20:23, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Template translation

Hi, I've seen your work on PD-scan and PD-old templates and I noticed a little bug. In French, the 1923 year is missing in this part : Template:PD-old-X-1923/fr. I looked at it, it appears in the code but not in the page. Can you look at it ? Aristoi (talk) 15:32, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for finding this. It was my fault, and I fixed it. I am trying to get all PD-1923 templates to return the same text, which is at the moment at {{PD-1923-text}}, but hopefully it will be moved to translatewiki at some point. --Jarekt (talk) 17:37, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing it. I'm sure I would'nt find the correct page to fix it myself. Good luck for your maintenance project. Aristoi (talk) 17:09, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

Languages of Template:PD-old-100-1923

Hello Jarek,

before your bot changes any templates, it'd be a good idea to check first if the new template has all required languages. As of now, Template:PD-old-100-1923 doesn't have a German version yet, unlike several other templates your bot replaced. So before, files from a German context (like File:August Rostert Entwurf Oekolampadius-Denkmal.jpg, a random example) had license templates in German. Then your bot comes, and suddenly it's (almost) only English. That's not an improvement, rather the opposite. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 23:08, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

I was working at the same time at improving the existing templates by consolidating the translations from dozens of templates, so I expect Template:PD-old-100-1923 to be changing within next few days. --Jarekt (talk) 03:33, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
In that case, fine. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 12:47, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

Category:Islamophobia

Why are you protecting the version with Category:Racism added in? If you weren't previously aware that the simplistic equation of all criticism of Islam with "racism"[sic] is extremely controversial and contentious, then you certainly are now. Your choice to heavy-handedly place a thumb on one side of the scales does not strike me as being particularly helpful or useful... AnonMoos (talk) 20:44, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Maybe since you seem kind of eager to protect the wrong version, you're now an involved party, and should let others do the protection on that category from now on... AnonMoos (talk) 23:58, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
As I said before, in case of conflicts like this I prefer to follow the English wikipedia example which usually has much larger people following it. So until there is a consensus here or change of consensus there, I think we should move on to different topics. And stopping edit wars and restoring the most agreed on version (here and on Wikipedia) does not make me an "involved party". --Jarekt (talk) 02:08, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
As I've said before (several times), Commons is not English Wikipedia, and and one of the main long-term disputants on Commons Category:Islamophobia has had significant influence on the English Wikipedia "Islamophobia" article, which introduces a certain circularity. Since you seem to wish to place a heavy thumb on one side of the scales without proper Commons-internal motivation, I'm afraid you are now an involved party. AnonMoos (talk) 09:06, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
Take a vote and if more people think the category should be removed, I will remove it. But until then lets keep the current version. Changing it without consensus only leads to edit wars. --Jarekt (talk) 21:03, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Jarek, if you have time, I would be glad if you could give your honest opinion. The question is not really urgent but I'd like better know whether to roll-back my edits (as if Commons has no recommendation, it is not worth spending more time in fixing bugs in Module:TemplateBox), which I would like to do better sooner than later. Help needed

Hi! Could you do me a favor and have a look here? I used the Google Translator but I am not sure if it works correctly. IMHO this website doesn't allow derivative works, at least that's what I get from the translation. How about the watermark? Could you also inform ArturZłoczew about your findings? I deleted some of his uploads he got from this website because he claimed own work. I am working on three b&w photos he uploaded, I am waiting for him to find the exact source. Thanks for your time! :-)) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:13, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Hedwig, I agree that all uploads so far have wrong licenses. In case of B&W images I think they might fall under {{Anonymous-EU}}, but using {{PD-Polish}} would be much better if images were published in Poland and meet requirements of that license. I also looked at deleted images: one or two could be {{PD-Art|PD-old-100}}. Map4u license does allow commercial use and seems to be compatible with our {{Attribution}} license requirements. --Jarekt (talk) 03:44, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Wtedy możesz użyć jakakolwiek chcesz licencje: {{CC-zero}}, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, etc.
Informacja powinna być łatwo dostępna by można by było zweryfikować
  • Znaleźć fotografie czy obrazy znanych autorów którzy nie żyją od ponad 70 lat i użyć licencji {{PD-old-auto}} albo {{PD-Art|PD-old-auto}}
Jutro napisze o indywidualnych plikach. Pozdrowienia --Jarekt (talk) 03:02, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

I think that text must be deleted, because its only original research.--Δαβίδ (talk) 18:11, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
I interwiki link to an article would be preferable, but since there are no articles on the subject, I think some explanation is useful. On Commons we do not have policies against original researches. I think it is fine in the current form, but you can get some more opinions on commons:Village Pump. --Jarekt (talk) 18:17, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
No, there is articles in some wikis about that so called symbol, but some of them are already nominated for deletion and original researches are removed from that articles.--Δαβίδ (talk) 18:21, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Aircraft files

Hi, you keep tagging these and notifying me but it would be better if you let me know though a less formal list. The bot sometimes glitches and fails to create the image description page properly. The bot only uploads files with a free license and only from a single stream (currently). This stream has tens of thousands of files so this will take some time. Just a mere suggestion.

Sorry about the formal warnings. You have a bot uploading files and I am using VisualFileChanges batch tool to tag new uploads without license with {{No license}}. So my bot is talking to your bot. The good news is that Category:Media without a license: needs history check which holds all the files that do not have a license or a problem tag does not have any more flickr files, so you should not hear from me for a while. --Jarekt (talk) 02:34, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Queens Hall car park Leeds 018.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

If you modified some other file you should list it's source, author and license and possibly add your license and your own name as author. If you started from scratch than you can just add your own license of choice. --Jarekt (talk) 23:56, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

The source is a User called Bphx, but I can't find him/her. Dear Jarekt, the picture actually is a derivative work, obtained merging four different pictures from Wikimedia Commons. Conte di Cavour, right now you are missing all descriptions, authors and licenses. Could you list in "source" field 4 images you used. List in author field 4 authors of those images + you. List in Permission list of licenses used by those images + license for your contribution (use {{CC-zero}} or {{PD-Author}} if you consider your contributions to be minor.) File:HMI building.jpg

I don't know how to properly list this file, so I will explain it.

I was working on the HMI page. Holistic Management International and needed a photo. I emailed the CEO of HMI and asked him for a picture of his building headquarters. He then sent his secretary outside to snap a pic, and emailed it to me for the wiki page. I don't see how this could possibly violate any copyright laws. The picture was taken for the expressed purpose of posting on wikipedia and none other purpose but that. Redddbaron (talk) 09:39, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

There is no violation of the laws, but this group of images is a bit more tricky. It would have been better if the secretary uploaded the image herself or himself. An alternative approach is for the secretary (not CEO) to send a OTRS letter. See the link for details. Sorry for the inconvenience. --Jarekt (talk) 10:33, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
I forwarded the permission email I got from Sandy Langelier in the same email I got the photo. I sent it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org Redddbaron (talk) 14:34, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
Great, although if email do not discuss which license to use, etc. It might not be enough. --Jarekt (talk) 23:39, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello Jarekt, Thank you for you message. File:Beijing banner 17 arch bridge.jpg and also the other two files (File:Haringvlietdam banner.jpg and File:Kunming banner stone forest.jpg are derived from commons photos, imported from Flicker, but all of them with a flicker bot validated CC license - and the source files are indicated at all 3 images. Missing bracket

Pozdrawiam - --Jolanya Dyr (talk) 19:24, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Regarding File:Syed Ahmed.jpg

Hi, The source of the image is from nic.in which permits to share its contents, so i think it can be used on wiki.

Mitrabarun, all files on commons are required to have some license template tag. See Commons:Copyright tags for more details. In case of File:Syed Ahmed.jpg you should provide a link to a page that says under what rules they "permit to share its contents". --Jarekt (talk) 18:39, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Please go through this link http://cabsec.nic.in/copyright_policy.php

Mitrabarun, The part about "Contents of this website may not be reproduced partially or fully, without due permission from NIC." does not sound like they "permits to share its contents". Feel free to get second opinion at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, but to me it sounds like there policy is not compatible with Commons and the file(s) will have to be deleted. --Jarekt (talk) 20:06, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
  • I did not notice this discussion, I have requested a speedy. Generally if a site does not clearly mention license with information like if they allow commercial, derivative use of the works, we can't upload works from there. Stockphoto issues on NARA images

Hi Jarek. I'm revisiting the problem we observed a while ago with the Stockphoto bar not appearing on many NARA image uploads. With a lot of testing, I determined that Stockphoto fails to appear in images using {{NARA-image-full}} when the "Scope and content" field is empty. See this example an image that fails. Does that help you pinpoint the problem? I think if I am identifying the trigger correctly, this is probably affecting the majority of NARA uploads. Dominic (talk) 14:39, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

I do not recall observing this issue before. And unfortunately I have very little understanding of JavaScript gadgets and their interactions with the templates. I can poke around {{NARA-image-full}} and "Scope and content" field, but we might need to find someone that understands JavaScripts. --Jarekt (talk) 14:58, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, for context, we had talked about it a long time ago, and you asked about it here: MediaWiki_talk:Gadget-Stockphoto.js#No_buttons_on_some_pages (but didn't get much help). Maybe we can try again, though. Dominic (talk) 15:13, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Now I recall. We might be able to reorganize source field to make it compatible with Stockphoto. --Jarekt (talk) 15:59, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

File:Einsatzgruppe.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Nominated for deletion???

Jarekt, I do not understand why you nominated the File:Alaska Layout.png I uploaded for deletion. It clearly states that this image is protected under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License. Apparently because it was released under a non-commercial license? So what you are saying is, in order to upload an image onto Wiki, the image has to be free to alter, transform, and use for commercial purposes? That is absurd.

Abehrle, Commons only allows files distributed under free licenses (see Commons:Licensing) and each file is required to have one of our license templates (see Commons:Copyright tags for most common ones). Your file was flagged because it does not have any license templates. If you check Commons:LIC#Well-known_licenses there is section there explicitly prohibiting CC-NC and CC-ND licenses, that is why we so not have any files using those. Sorry to be a messenger of bad news, but this file can not stay unless it meets requirements of one of supported licenses. It can be uploaded to Wikipedia under "fair use" rules, see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content --Jarekt (talk) 20:06, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your warning about this. It is a photo, published 1914, of a mid-17th century painting. I'm sure this is PD, but have I got the tags right? I uploaded it using the wizard, which seems not to sort these things out as you go along. Sjwells53 (talk) 19:37, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

It is fine now. --Jarekt (talk) 20:02, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
Actually, it turns out I have misled you, but I hope not in a way that matters materially. Further probing discloses that it's actually a photograph of a pre-1825 engraving from a 1636 oil painting. I'm pretty certain that makes no difference to the matter in hand. Many thanks for your help in resolving this issue. Sjwells53 (talk) 21:02, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Chciałbym dodać ta grafikę do artykułu o powstaniu. Z góry serdeczne dzięki za pomoc! Boston9 (talk) 08:40, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Boston9 (talk) 14:11, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

overlay.kml

Hello. Could you please explain what's all the strange xml-like files in Category:Geocoding_overlays? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 14:24, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

Those are en:kml files which as far as I know are the only way to overlay map images or satelite/airplane pictures on top of the maps. Each of the files is associated with an image and can be displayed through a template there. See Commons:Geocoding/Overlay for more details. Unfortunately subpages of files are not well supported and those files end up on all kind of problem lists, like files without licenses, categories, associated binary data, etc. --Jarekt (talk) 03:52, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Lst is here!

I found with enthusiasm thal Labeled Section Transclusion has been activated here. Take a look to first my use of #lst into Book template of this djvu file (the first of a long series): File:Le opere di Galileo Galilei I.djvu. Isn't impressive how much information is wrapped into a unique code, invariant into volumes of the whole series? You'll find too a trick: to use a "dummy page" (Le opere di Galileo Galilei) as a unlimited "data container". :-) --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 14:30, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Wow that is new. It took me a while to figure out what is going on there. Although I am not so sure about the unlimited "data container" made out of gallery pages using <div style="display:none"> - I think you can much more clearly accomplish the same with a template and a {{#switch}} as in Template:I18n/location. --Jarekt (talk) 15:41, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
From a large, and very "creative" experience, I can promise hat you'll find incredible opportunities from #lst. That one was a test only, to see if a #lst call was rightly managed by Book template: it is. We tried anything useful to manage structured data into it.source, much time before Wikidata was imagined. #lst, #switch, javascript data pages.... and now, Lua. Nevertheless #lst, sometimes, is the simpler solution.... I added div style="display:none" just as a joke for you.... to show how well data can be masked without any need of using templates or noinclude/includeonly/onlyinclude. Now I'm going to go and edit agai that page, rollbacing the last edit (the volume list is useful there too). --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 16:12, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
This remind me a little of code obfuscation, but probably because I am not used to it yet. We should create an Egg hunt game where user task is to figure out there some transcluded text originally come from, sometimes it is very unclear. --Jarekt (talk) 16:26, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
As I told you source projects went very deeply into this matter. Consider lst simply as a powerful tool to transform any page into a shared named data container, using the normal text as data (forget please the display:none trick!) and a powerful mean to apply the (so often forgotten in mediawiki context) principle "If you are repeating yourself, you are going wrong". Take too in account that you can't nest and nest sections; section tag itself can't be transcluded, so that Egg hunt is limited to one step (while there are complex templates with a number of nesting levels.... so that they are almost impossible to understand: that is, a real Egg hunt imho!) --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 07:01, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
The comment about the Egg hunt was mostly related to my frustration with some templates where it takes me forever to find the source of the text. It does not help that I wrote some of those templates. Some other obfuscation mechanisms include translatewiki, differences between {{int:January}} and {{MediaWiki:January}}, templates whose name is calculated based in input parameters, etc. #lst will add to this list. But I can see why it would be useful on wikisource and I am sure we will find some good use for it here. I agree with the principle "If you are repeating yourself, you are doing something wrong" and templates are not appropriate for everything so #lst will come handy. Thanks for letting me know about them. --Jarekt (talk) 12:54, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

RE: MagellanMusic photo copyright

This is the message you sent to me just a few moments ago concerning a photo to be posted in the MagellanMusic article, "No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it. If you have any questions please contact me on my talk page."

Sprawdziłem OTRS i dodałem. --Jarekt (talk) 20:06, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Pozdrwienia --Jarekt (talk) 03:26, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Czesc Jarekt, from my point of view the source and license is clear. But maybe it's a fallacy? Please help. Best! Bicycle minister

Bicycle minister, I do not speak German and even with Google translate I do not know which one of CC licenses that corresponds to. To avoid this kind of confusion we have a requirement that all files have to have a license template (not license description). I will be glad to add it for you if you match it to the proper template it is probably {{Cc-by-3.0}} or {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}, but could be one of the other dozen CC licenses. --Jarekt (talk) 04:00, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
Jarekt it's a CC-BY-3.0. I asked the adminstrator of the source to add an English text that declares the cc license. Bicycle minister
Fixed I added CC-BY-3.0 license. Thanks --Jarekt (talk) 13:55, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Syntax error

Small hint: This was caused by your previous edit. --McZusatz (talk) 09:37, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

I will see if I can find more of those. --Jarekt (talk) 13:38, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

<No subject>

There seems to be a problem with the "Upload File" tool, because I selected a license when I uploaded (CC Attribution), but then it was not there as you noted. I fixed it, but I will keep an eye out the next time I upload. Danielravennest (talk) 06:25, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

That might be the case, I do not know the tools people use to upload their files, but most of them will try to force you to add a license, which is for many easier at the upload time then latter because they do not have to understand the wikicode. --Jarekt (talk) 12:49, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Wiki is a hard job

hello Jarekt, I'm not so fit like the other Wiki-freelancer. You marked some of my pictures to Königliche Preußische Gewehrfabrique. I have corrected three of them and hope that's o.k. The other both pics are in work. Greetings --Foersterin (talk) 17:09, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately it was not OK, but I managed to fix most of them. The problem is that every file needs at least one valid license template (also known as copyright tags), they are usually easily added at the upload time and can be confusing if one is required to add them by hand latter. For example your File:Protokolldienst Wachbataillon.jpg does not have one. Please read Commons:Lizenzvorlagen for more info, also feel free to ask me or if you prefer ask German speaking users at Commons:Forum. Greetings --Jarekt (talk) 18:38, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

AWB i pluginy...

No nic będę myślał dalej... Blackfish (talk) 23:13, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

--Jarekt (talk) 19:02, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
Stokrotne dzięki za pomoc, po raz kolejny! Zaraz wstawię to kolorowe zdjęcie do artykułu i napiszę do niego, żeby powtórzył tę operację dla pozostałych (jeżeli są źródła). Boston9 (talk) 22:19, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

File:TOMBAZIS.-1825.jpeg

Dear Jarekt, I tag it, as per your suggestion. Probably the wording “file page doesn't contain enough information about the license” is standart, but this is not a case. Author of this engraving, from Historical museum of Athens, was died latest 1880 (some 130 years ago). The engraving itself published in 4-5 dozens of historical editions, including school books, mean file is in public domain for 100 years plus. Furthemore this is not a photo, this is low resolution scanning from one of this editions (I use edition dated 1971 – mean 42 years old) but there are more old editions, with same image. There are no persons, at least in this world, entitled with rights for this historical image. Best Regards Macedon-40 (talk) 20:01, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

I agree the standard {{No license}} wording does not work well for PD works. I will see if I can change it. I corrected the license of File:TOMBAZIS.-1825.jpeg. --Jarekt (talk) 20:20, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Tagging of File:Harriet Backer - Christening in Tanum Church - Google Art Project.jpg

Hi Jarekt, you tagged my bot's upload File:Harriet Backer - Christening in Tanum Church - Google Art Project.jpg with no explanation. It has a licensing tag ({{PD-Art-two-auto|1932}}) and that tag appears to be valid. The work was published before 1923, by a Norwegian artist who died over 70 years ago, so it's clearly PD in the source country and US. So I removed the tag. Let me know on my talk page if I'm missing something. Thanks. Dcoetzee (talk) 15:59, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Przeczytaj Commons:Nadawanie licencji i Commons:Oznaczenia licencji.
pozdrowienia --Jarekt (talk) 22:28, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Pozdrawiam --Alphablondy 2007 (talk) 09:22, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello, it seems that the image does not meet the conditions of "freedom of panorama". The artwork is not in the public, but in a museum. Therefore, the image can be deleted. Kind regards, --Echtner (talk) 11:42, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

User:JGeorges - Answer

Oh thank you very much Jarekt for having informed me. Indeed, this user isn't me and he completely made a copy of my presentation page! I must say I don't know what to do to find a solution to this kind of “plagiarism”… because it's flattering you know ;) Maybe I should tell him he needs to change his user page, or else can I delete it immediately by advocating copyright?

Thank you again to having noticed that important fact. • Frantogian You talkin' to me?18:00, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello,Jarekt! How to correct the file?please help me!By the way,English is difficult for me,you'd better use the Chinese.Thank you!--Great HE (talk) 07:25, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Dear Jarekt, I found this file on COMMONS together with some other pictures of Hofmeister (that spelling seems to be more common). There is even a whole category on Carl Ludwig Hofmeister. I found it useful to create a detail to use the picture for an article on the Danube - I don't quite understand what else I would have to do. error message with location templates

Hi Jarekt, maybe you can help, I did not break the behavior down to the final reason, but I found you were working with the location related templates the last days. So can you please have a look at e.g. File:Murau_Friesacher_Tor_2_2012-08-11.jpg, where I get an error message {{#coordinates:}}: cannot have more than one primary tag per page. It is, btw, quite useful and common to use both {{Object location}} and {{Location}} on the same image. If I remove any of the two templates the error message disappears. thanks --Herzi Pinki (talk) 11:24, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Stunteltje, OTRS permission is one thing, but all images uploaded to commons need to have a license and that file is missing it at the moment. --Jarekt (talk) 13:34, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Lower Manhattan Expressway,Model,transit hub close-up.tiff

Thanks for notifying me on the missing license on the file, it had slipped me. I'm not sure that PD-US is the correct one though, LOC states "There are no known restrictions on the use of original architectural drawings made by Paul Rudolph. Paul Rudolph claimed the rights for all his architectural drawings, and dedicated those rights to the public when he gave his collection to the Library. However, privacy rights may apply, especially for drawings of residences." (http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/res/460_rudo.html). Let me know if you know a better license. Best regards, Nelg (talk) 12:59, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

I created {{PD-Rudolph}} for files like this. --Jarekt (talk) 14:08, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello Sorry for being late with my answer. In November 19th you deleted three files that I uploaded,

I agree you that the website of the source link has copyright but the design I've created is original, totally different from the website in the three cases. I've also used a book as source but due to this book is Spanish, so less known that an English book and not accessible at Google books or Amazon, this is the book:

  • Gea Ortigas, María Isabel. Historia del oso y el madroño : (los escudos de Madrid). Antiguos cementerios de Madrid. Madrid : La Librería, 2008 (4th ed.) ISBN 978-84-89411-35-7

I wrongly thought that it might be useful for the users' checking with this web, I chose it because only this web images are available on the Internet. These are emblems of the local Government of Madrid and it permits free presence of its coat of arms at Commons, as you can see in the category, so the website can only claim any ownership right to the design of the image. But there is other source that I used as you can see at other historic versions of the arms of Madrid that I've done. So the link can be omited

It's a identical example at Commons:

There is the image of the UK royal arms at Commons   it's accepted by Brit authorities as free use but there are webs with other images and Copyright reserved, examples [173] and [174]. So if these images are totally or partial copied there is a violation of copyright and the images must be deleted, but in these cases, like my case, the image design is different than others, so only the Uk authorities have rights over the image of Commons. This is the same case in these images, there are other design so they aren't a copyright violation.

File:Historic Arms of the Province of Madrid.svg and File:Historic Coat of Arms of the Province of Madrid.svg have also a different design, there is other version in Commons   it is the same coat of arms and there aren't problems because it is the same case that I told you with the arms of the City its design is different like in the case of my two files of Provincial arms, so there aren't problems with the web except in the case that the design would be the same and it is different in this case too.

For these resons Would you restored these five files removing the website link, please? Thanks you very much.--Heralder (talk) 19:45, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Heralder, Few clarifications:
  • I did not deleted your files, I noticed that they were new uploads that did not have required license template (copyright tag) so I alerted you about it and tagged them as files in need of fixing. Since nothing is done to correct it other admins deleted the files after some time.
  • The files were not deleted because they were too similar to copyrighted designs by others, but because there was no information under what license they were being distributed. They might be too similar to copyrighted designs by others, but that was not the complain or reason for the deletion.
Under closer inspection in each of those files you upload files with {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} and than removed this license template in your first edit after the upload. That is the only reason they were deleted. I was trying to explain that in my message. I can restore those files but I will have to know the license template to add. {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}? Greetings --Jarekt (talk) 04:15, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello
I apologise:
  • I have returned to read my message after your answer and I think the tone of my message looks rude, I did not want to create that impresion, I'm not a native speaker. I wasn't angry in any case, sorry.
  • I'm sorry again, I didn't understand the reason, I confirm the licence that I used is {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}.
The problem has been I've been really busy since November and I couldn't conect before, for this reason I couldn't see the warnings.
Thank you for all--Heralder (talk) 12:56, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Question about exporting

Thanks again for the help and I hope you don't mind a followup question. Do you know of a way to export a group of images for import into another wiki (Wikia specifically).? I have been doing them one at a time but it seems like there must be an easier way. KumiokoCleanStart (talk) 05:13, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

No I do not know. You can download the descriptions of large number of files with tools like AutoWikiBrouser or pywikipediabot, but it requires programing. --Jarekt (talk) 12:54, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanx

Thank you for your "help", sorry for my mistake, but you can add right license yourself. Its more easy than asking me. --Palu (talk) 20:33, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Paulu, It is not more easy, since I search for all the images uploaded last week that do not have a license and alert all the uploaders that the licenses are missing. I is a batch process. Also since I often run into images by same people, this process also alerts uploaders that something they are doing is not right, so they can be aware of it. Just fixing it, would be a full time job, even if for some cases it is simple. --Jarekt (talk) 20:58, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
OK, sorry. --Palu (talk) 07:35, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

File:Weteran (Veteran) Wroclaw dwarf 01.JPG

Witaj!

--Jarekt (talk) 13:55, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Multiple restores

Hi Jarekt. I noticed your post at UDEL. I don't know of any mass restore tool on Commons. I asked Rillke about one a few weeks ago. I've done a few of these myself, and I had to do them one-by-one by hand. In one case, I had to restore over 200 images, one at a time! It's tough, but if you find a better alternative please let me know about it on my talk. INeverCry 21:36, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
