MeEdit

James "Jim" Evans is a very common name. I am none of the people on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Evans

I mostly upload or edit photos here and add the photos I upload to germane Wikipedia pages. The Wiki jargon and script language are more than I want to learn. I use to use i_am_jim for the copyright release I changed it to Jim Evans. For reasons I don't understand, sometimes foobar appears and sometimes Wiki name (my previous name). I've been a member here since 2006 and maybe longer. Wiki name (talk) 16:21, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Victoria, TexasEdit

Hi. I see you have recently uploaded several photos of buildings in Victoria, Texas. Assuming you live in or near Victoria, I was wondering if you could photograph Our Lady of Victory Cathedral in the city? There are several Wikipedia articles that could use an image of the cathedral. Thank you for considering this request. Farragutful (talk) 12:56, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Victoria is moderately rich in early Texas History. I was just traveling through. I stopped there to eat and take a few pictures of historical homes and markers. If I had only known I would have been happy to take the picture you wanted. Wiki name (talk) 13:46, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Please mark materially altered images as "modified"Edit

Hi there,

When you retouch the subject of an image (e.g. File:Home of Warren G. Harding 2011.jpg where you photoshopped out power lines), can you please add the {{Modified}} template with details of the changes so that we no modifications have been made?

Normally I'd also suggest uploading materially altered images such as this under new filename if you're not the creator, but since this is a Flickr image (i.e. the Commons upload isn't the original upload), it probably doesn't matter as much here.

It'd be useful if you could do this for your own images as well (e.g. the ones where the sky has been replaced).

Thank you,

Monroe Doctrine without watermark imageEdit

Hi Jim, I just noticed you updated this image, which is great - but I think it might be better as a new file. The old version was used to make a point about cropping watermarks at Commons:CropTool. The watermark superseded template is designed for new files, not overwrites, as well. Also, if you do decide to do that, could the rough lines used to paint over the watermark be made neater? Thanks, Kingsif (talk) 02:26, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Kingsif, and a good tomorrow to you. I don't mind if you delete my modified image. Or if you'd rather I will revert to the original. Jim Evans (talk) 02:40, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

File:Mosque Houston, Clear Lake City, Texas.jpgEdit

Hi Jim Evans, while categorizing quality images I found that the depicted mosque includes multiple prominent cross ornaments, even on the roof. This is very unusual for a mosque, but quite common for churches. Are you sure that this is a mosque? Unfortuantely, there is no geotag there. Best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 12:55, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Seems I am not the only one who noticed the crosses. I am pretty sure it is the new church building of the Archangel Raphael Coptic Orthodox community (there is an artistic rendering on the donations page). --HyperGaruda (talk) 13:10, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
It looks like you're both correct. It looked like a mosque to me. I saw those things atop the domes. I'm not religious but I didn't recognize them as crosses. So, how do I correct this? The file will need to be renamed and I'd rather not lose the QI. I will immediately remove it from it's uses and remove the incorrect categories. Jim Evans (talk) 15:48, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
You won't lose the QI, but some ID and a proper name would help to use the image in Wikipedia. I added the suggestion by User:HyperGaruda to the description. Have you got an address for the building or some coordinates? --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 21:59, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
Though GoogleMaps satellite imagery has not been updated recently, there is one StreetView position from May 2020 showing the completed building in the backyard of the old church. I'd say it is located at approximately 29°34′48″N 95°09′17″W / 29.5799°N 95.1548°W / 29.5799; -95.1548. --HyperGaruda (talk) 03:48, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, that looks good. In the meantime the author had the imsge renamed. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 12:09, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

identityEdit

Hi Jim - could you check the identity of File:Common Texas Grackle.jpg, please? The wing coverts look too uniformly and brightly iridescent for Common Grackle. I'd reckon it is either Boat-tailed or Great-tailed, with the tail feathers only partly grown after the late summer molt. Location details (Texas is a big state!!) would help a lot; could you add them, please. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 22:42, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I'm not a bird person. It's what we call a Grackle. In Googling grackles I realized there were a few varieties but it seemed to me to be like the ones described as Common. The article said you could distinguish Common Grackles from others by the yellow eyes and iridescent body. I can't find the article and picture it showed, but it was similar to this picture of a Common Grackle though the eyes were more yellow and there was no color behind the head [3] If you're confident it's another kind, just change it. I'll add in the description it's from the Houston Clear Lake area. Jim Evans (talk) 23:40, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
Many thanks! Pretty certain now it's a Great-tailed Grackle which is common in the Houston area, and also has the yellow eye. That normally has a much longer tail, but it is the time of year when they've just shed the old feathers and are growing new ones. The important difference here is that the head and back are the same glossy dark blue as in your photo; compare the linked allaboutbirds Common Grackle pic, with the glossy blue head contrasting with the browner back. I'll change it in a bit. - MPF (talk) 22:32, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
And done! Hope it's OK :-) MPF (talk) 23:02, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
Good job I'm sure. Do you specialize in Grackles? Jim Evans (talk) 23:24, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
