File:Bedford Road Collegiate 2013.png deletion

I contacted the school and was provided an original version and requested to place this file online. What is this deletion based on? Microtic (talk) 22:09, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

@Microtic: There was no proof of the license, also the link you sourced the image from didn't have a copy of the image. If you have an e-mail or something releasing proving that Saskatoon Public Schools has released the image under a free license, please forward that to COM:OTRS and it will be restored. Hope that helps! Jon Kolbert (talk) 22:13, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

WELL...

Regarding images uploaded by Madsch

Heya Jon. I'm writing regarding some OTRS tickets that were deemed insufficient (see my contributions for the files). I was wondering what needs to be clarified since we followed the template and the message came from the DFI mailserver. Madsch didn't recieve a "rejection" e-mail on OTRS, so I'm writing you for clarification. All the best, InsaneHacker (talk) 19:50, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

@InsaneHacker: Hello there, I marked the files as such to indicate that an OTRS ticket exists so that they aren't deleted for "no permission". There will be a follow-up on whether more information is needed or just a confirmation that the permission sent was sufficient. If you have any more questions feel free to ask! Category dumping

Please dump the files you can't be bothered to categorise properly somewhere else. Category:Unidentified aircraft is for aircraft that cannot be identified at face value and require research. Aircraft that are readily identifiable can be dumped in Category:Images of aircraft without type category.--Petebutt (talk) 04:52, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

@Petebutt: Hello there, I'm assuming you're referring to File:Aircraft at Toronto Pearson.jpg (that's all I see in my watchlist). Unfortunately I am not that familiar with aircraft types and couldn't see a registration code on the plane, so it did not seem "readily identifiable" to me. Regards, Jon Kolbert (talk) 05:01, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
Ignore registrations, focus on aircraft type. I have to admit that I assumed you were responsible for all 100 odd that had been dumped.--Petebutt (talk) 05:11, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Jon Kolbert, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard an it subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons-lr webchat on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

You don't deserve it. In Commons:Deletion requests/File:Google Chrome Screenshot.png, you ignored both the copyright law (which I quoted) and the precedent (which I cited), without even trying mention that I am wrong (let alone saying when and where). Do you know how much research I put into my nomination? Not a very good first impression of an administrator.

I hope I see better performance in the future.

Why did you delete two pictures I uploaded?

Hi Jon,

I notice that you deleted two pictures I uploaded today for two new articles.

This pictures are the official posters of two short-films the company I work for produced: so we own the rights of these posters. The articles are : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_Jour_(court-m%C3%A9trage) and https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleu_comme_la_m%C3%A8re

Sorry if I didn't correctly mention the fact that we're the rights holders.

Could you please put the posters back online?

Thank you for your help. Best,

Helene (from Boburst Productions)

@Boburstmpm: Hello Helene, hope you are doing well. The easiest way to verify that you are the copyright holder is to send an e-mail from the official website of Boburst Productions following the instructions outlined here. An agent will respond and help walk you through the release process. Let me know if you have any further questions - I'm happy to help. Thank you! Jon Kolbert (talk) 20:19, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

@Jon Kolbert: Hey Jon, thank you for your reply. I did what you advised, let's see what will happen now! I'll let you know. Thank you. Best,

Deleted files

It is not fair that you have deleted the images without having reached an agreement.--Soosie. (talk) 21:52, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

@Soosie.: The images were very clearly cropped from larger, watermarked images. You have the option of trying to reach out to Newsinstar to confirm whether that is their official tistory account. Other than that, there's no basis for undeletion because they appear to be very clear copyright violations. Regards, Jon Kolbert (talk) 21:59, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

What?

NZ Government releases all its images on all their websites under cc-by-4.0, its basically written on their website, if you bothered to scroll below here, the explicitly say "Unless indicated otherwise, all content on Govt.nz is licensed for re-use under a Creative Commons 4.0 International Licence", this applies to all their ministeries including Foreign affairs which obviously includes the embassies, OTRS has never been needed for this, the Australia government has the same copyright licences, are you now gonna go around deleting images take off Australia government websites too? I just wish ppl who are selected admins know what they are doing..--Stemoc 06:14, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

@Stemoc: "Unless indicated otherwise" - here it is indicated otherwise "Copyright in photographs on Govt.nz is not owned or licensed to you by the Crown. Unless otherwise stated in relation to specific photographs, you cannot copy, distribute or adapt any photograph without the agreement of the copyright owner." It also doesn't help your case to call the DR nominator an "idiot" instead of engaging in a meaningful dialogue. Jon Kolbert (talk) 07:42, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

ok

I will read the rules and policies a little more carefully. Artix Kreiger (talk) 02:18, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

Screenshot of Non-State Actor Page

How is it that I should get presented a screenshot of our page in the Wikimedia archive to use in the Infobox Website for a WikiProject development with microformats. The file was File:Globcal.net screenshot.jpg is something about me making the page have something to do with it? The page was developed and styled by me as the author and the organization is a non-state actor with no legal standing in the United States courts, so there is no violation of copyright. Should such a page be marked as a sample or in another format than Attribution 3.0? I will appreciate your direction or helping me get the file restored, redescribed and retagged. Problemsmith (talk) 20:22, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

You are a citizen of a country? Then the copyright of that country applies for your work. The photographs you used have to be sourced properly, meaning the photographers have to send their permission to us, see OTRS. They still own the works, no matter what their citizen status may be. You created a derivative of other people's works, see Com:DW for some info. Anyway, the organization itself is not (that) important for the rights, the authors definitely are. Bottom line: No permission from all authors, no valid CC license possible. Hope it helps. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 20:50, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

Bad closure

Regarding your closure here, you seem to have overlooked the point that the tag was misused and that the work WASN'T free use (and that the other user was wrong in trying to claim otherwise). There's no valid reason to keep improperly licensed photos on commons. SNUGGUMS (talk) 03:50, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

@SNUGGUMS: Please refer to the official Commons policy documenting what falls under {{PD-ineligible}}. Jon Kolbert (talk) 03:57, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
This definitely doesn't by any means fall under that. SNUGGUMS (talk) 04:10, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
(Admin talk page stalker) Yes it does. Any medium can be too simple to be copyrighted. Text on a colored background is not protected by American copyright (as the copyright law currently is worded; see the official Commons policy for a guide what can and can not be protected by (copyright) law) The names may be trademaked and protected in otherways than coopyight, but that's not what that debae were about, nor anything Commoons care about. This closure was proper. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 04:28, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jon,

I received the 2 messages below from you about my images. I am the person in the image and the copyright holder, Marina Donahue. I give full permission for Wikipedia to use this image for any purpose. This is a fair use image. Here is my website where you will find the same image: https://www.cornerbarpictures.com/about-cbp

My same image is on all of my websites:

Marina on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3340709/ Marina on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marina.donahue/ Marina on Twitter: https://twitter.com/marinadonahue Marina on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/marina.y.donahue

I also should reply to the same message I received from you for the movie 'All In Time'. I am a producer of this film. I received the same type of message: see below

That is also my image. I give permission to use this image in any way. It is also on my website: https://www.cornerbarpictures.com/all-in-time

And it's all over the internet, since it's a film. http://www.allintimefilm.com/

I created, own and paid for this image and give my permission to be used freely.

Thank you Jon!

Please accept my email as permission to use both of these images. I'm a relative newbee to Wikipedia, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks. Same user as the nom in the request you closed nom'ed one of my pics at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Akihabara August 2014 08.JPG. Do you think I am right there with de minimis argument, or is it a more complicated case? (PS. I am not asking for a close, just wondering what you think). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 07:40, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
@Piotrus: I'd say that the mentioned DR doesn't fall under de minimis. The DR I closed was about a picture where there was a promotional material for an event on a building. The argument could be made that the photo was of the venue of the event, which naturally had some copyrighted promotional material for it.
The photo you mention, on the other hand. Is simply a table with an assortment of copyrighted book covers. A picture of a library aisle where you can see a few copyrighted spines would likely be de minimis because they're not the 'subject' of the image, they're just there. I hope this helps. Hi, I've seen that the pictures you have flagged as personal topic. I am sorry for that! But the pictures are representing an author Salman Aziz a.k.a. AKA$H. And yes all works are mine with him! https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/17071167.Salman_Aziz and https://www.amazon.com/Salman-Aziz/e/B071XMBLBL/ref=dp_byline_cont_ebooks_1

Tell me how do I provide more evidence to stop deletion of those photos? Hope you will response ASAP. Thank you --S Kahn (talk) 07:30, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

  • @S Kahn: The images do not fall within the project scope as they are not realistically useful for an educational purpose. The person is not considered notable by Wikipedia's standards and thus images of them would likely fall out of scope. Jon Kolbert (talk) 20:14, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Spam?

Hi Jon,

You deleted the file Phone_digits_phone_digits_and_letters.jpg stating only "spam" as reason. Could this be a mistake? This file had been in use on nl.wiktionary for over a year. As a moderator I am busy myself combating spam and the user who put the picture on wiktionary is definitely not involved in spamming. I see no way this picture would meet COM:D. Would you please be so kind as to restore the file? Greetings, --MarcoSwart (talk) 17:52, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

I noticed it has been restored already while I was investigating what could be the problem. No further action required. --MarcoSwart (talk) 17:58, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
@MarcoSwart: There is a pattern of spam where users upload generic files and include inappropriate links to external sites in the description. With other accounts, they seem to almost always be copyright violations, but since this file is PD-simple anyway that doesn't seem to matter here. I've restored the file and removed the inappropriate link from the description. Regards, Jon Kolbert (talk) 18:00, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for restoring the picture. You may want to check whether your reasoning for this work being PD-simple is valid. Under Dutch copyright law artistic choices like color and shading can be sufficient to create some protection for the maker. To me this uploader seems not intended on promoting his site, but I do agree with you that there is no necessity to link to it. But to change a license without consulting the original uploader looks like a risky step to me. --MarcoSwart (talk) 18:17, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

Deletion of Tori Bodine artwork

Hi Jon, You have filed a deletion request of all my artworks. I am the owner of these works and have uploaded them under CC BY-SA 4.0 license. Please remove your request or explain what I can do to keep them on wikimedia commons. Many thanks,

Tori

Bot edits in Original Uploads Summaries

Hi Kolbert, please have a look at this edit: [2]. I think your bot should not perform changes to the original upload sections. This can be achieved by not performing edits in nowiki tags. Please update your bot accordingly. --Schlurcher (talk) 22:02, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

I saw now that you use phwikibot. You can achieve the above with the option -exceptinsidetag:nowiki --Schlurcher (talk) 22:18, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
@Schlurcher: Done, thank you for the advice. Did you see my message on your bot request page? Jon Kolbert (talk) 00:13, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
Hi, I indeed overlooked this. I did not add you talk page to my watchlist. Please see my response now: [3] --Schlurcher (talk) 19:09, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

Bot speed question

Hi Jon Kolbert, I saw that you Bot is currently running with what appears to be with an unthrottle edit rate. Was this intentional? I know that Commons:Bots suggests a rate of 12 per minute, but that 30 edits per minute is generally acceptable by the community. This is based on my experience froung roughtly 3 years ago; when I was more active the last time. Accordingly, my Bot currently runs with a thottle of every 2 seconds, roughly leading to 30 edits per minute. Is even this not needed nowadays any more? --Schlurcher (talk) 17:56, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

The bot operates with respect to the API etiquette, so the speed will vary depending on server load. Jon Kolbert (talk) 20:37, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering for some time now, why I see variations in the edit rate. I gather now that this is intended behavior based on a nice feature and not due to different response time of the network connection, as I had suspected. It's good to know that that there is no need to worry then. --Schlurcher (talk) 21:59, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
