Hello Korall/Arkiv!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 05:59, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I generally try to cathegorize my contributions, but this one was harder to do because there was no pre-existing cathegory of the species. NHow i tried to categorise it but im not a biologist, so im not sure i did it right.--Korall (talk) 01:06, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Karpat.jpg edit

Hi! You decline that file QI -status, because you say that resolution is too small. Can you asked, if photographer has bigger resolution image? (I'm very sorry my English, it is really shameful) Best regards – EtäKärppä? 17:00, 4 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

The minimum resolution for QI status is 2 million pixels. The image I declined because of size, File:Karpat.jpg was only 12% of that. Of course someone could ask the uploader if the picture is avalible in higher resolution. If you want to, you can do it at User talk:JaskaS. Dont apologize for your english, I think I understood the question, and that is what matters. =) --Korall (talk) 17:09, 4 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nominations edit

  • I really appreciate it when one of my pictures gets nominated for FP, but please don't get too hasty. There is a huge difference between a good image and an outstanding one. Personally I take my pictures to contribute scientifically and to provide knowledge and not to decorate myself. --Ernie (talk) 17:11, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
We do not have a lot of FP:s of amphibians and the one I nominated is of good quality and higher resoulution (the acrual size of the frog is bigger than the others) than the existing ones of rana temporaria neither foreground or backgrond is distracting. If i find something I think is really good I nominate for FP, some of them go though and some dont. If you really mind I can always withdraw. --Korall (talk) 17:37, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nope, I do not mind at all. Your arguments sound firm enough to me. Just wanted to make sure you are not going to shoehorn (my) pictures into the FP process.--Ernie (talk) 18:02, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

ComputerHotline edit

Thanks for helping out on QI. This user stubbornly refuses to listen to advice and does not answer requests. I have hundreds of pictures myself waiting for an ID to be posted. I personally only post when I have a confirmed ID and sometimes that involves looking up and mailing specialist all over the world. Although I'm a biologist myself, one cannot specialize in every taxon. Sometimes I'm running a bit out of patience with this CH. Kind regards. Lycaon (talk) 20:16, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I know a very good book on dragonflies in Europe (in Swedish) but I have some important things in school right now that I really want to finish before the weekend. If I can help out, im happy to do it. Im planning on going to the library anyway this weekend becuse I have som nice pics of grasshoppers and I heard roumors of a good book. So if the pictures can remain in the nomination page until then, there is a good chance some of them will go trough.--Korall (talk) 21:51, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK. Though it is not only up to me of course ;-). If you need help on ID's some time, you can also check out my literature list. Some of those books are really good, others only cover about 10% of the organisms in the area. Lycaon (talk) 05:37, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re:Changing taxa edit

Hello. When I first saw File:Danaus eresimus.JPG, I saw the row of white submarginal spots on both the upper side of the fore wing which made me think it was a Queen. (If you would like to see where the submarginal area is located on the wing please see this where it says "submargin"). According to my field guide, the Soldier lacked these white spots. I did a little more research and found that Soldiers will sometimes have these white spots. And because File:Danaus sp Loxahatchee 2.JPG had the pale spots on the underside of the hind wing, this butterfly is a Soldier. I'm sorry about the confusion, and I'll go back and correct my mistakes. Thank you for notifying me. -Meganmccarty (talk) 01:09, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I know it is sometimes very hard to correctly identify very similar butterflies, especially when the image quality leaves a lot to desire. I try my best and I am sure you do your best too to in order to provide correct information on the wikimedia projects, but of course anyone can make mistakes sometimes. The good thing is that the wiki technique gives anyone the possibility to correct things to the better. Thank you for the help in search for ID of this particular butterfly. --Korall (talk) 08:46, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

ID help needed edit

Hi,

I was wondering if you had any idea what order or maybe family the hexapod on this picture belongs to. Have been trying to figure it out for a while now and finally gave up. Any help would be most welcome --Ernie (talk) 19:58, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I wish I had but I have no education in biology since high school so I really hope there is some other person in the wikimedia project with a better chance. Have you tried the biology group of german wikipedia? Lycaon is a marine biologist but he might have a clue? All species determinations Ive ever done are through borrowing books at the library or asking other wikimedians. I wish you the best of luck!--Korall (talk) 20:50, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I thought you were biologist too. Well, thanks for your help anyways. --Ernie (talk) 21:12, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well I am amazed by biology but my guess is that studying biology at college level would involve learning a lot of things by heart and the course Ive ever had that was closest to biology was biochemstry (which to me was like learning the telephone directory), and it kind of scared me away from the subject. --Korall (talk) 21:49, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Studying any science can sometimes get a bit overwhelming or maybe even boring, but as soon as you are done with the standard curriculum and you can choose your own direction things get a little more exciting. That German Taxonomy Wiki really helped, thanks a lot! The species is a springtail (as I initially thought lol) – Orchesella flavescens to be more precise. One image less to ID! --Ernie (talk) 07:41, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Its not that I dont like to study science, thats one of my favourite things to do, and I am so happy to live in Sweden where there are no fees to study at the universities. But every person kind of have to choose a path since noone can study all the sciences today and I just didnt choose biology. Im a very happy first-year student at the computer science program. Some people think that that means I know a lot about computers and can fix them and stuff, but in reality I am just learning the (fossile?) language Pascal at the moment. --Korall (talk) 19:50, 12 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would call Pascal everything but ancient. C is still pretty standard these days and it got a couple of years on its back too. --Ernie (talk) 16:03, 13 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
