Few news from LiliEdit

Hello Languageseeker, I bumped into your LinguaLibre contribution so I come here for some news. In January and February the « Lili » community has taken back control of the technical stack (access to servers, codes, bots, etc.) and made a call for more diverse speakers. The Indian community started to show up, with key Indic languages being Bengala (50,000) and Marathi (~10,000). Romanian, Polish, Ukrainian are also on the rise around 20,000 audios each. We continue to have some dozen smaller languages showing up but no powerful push yet.

Right now, an external software company is upgrading our MediaWiki and its modules thanks to Wikimedia France's funding. The volunteer dev team is also strong and internal organization is increasing with a more organized community. We now have LinguaLibre:Technical board as a tech hub, LinguaLibre:Bot as a bot hub, LinguaLibre:Events as an IRL/Online event hub. When main software upgrate settles down in a month we plan a [yet to create] LinguaLibre:Newsletter as a outward communication hub.

In that last dimension we will look for "relay" users, who can share our news with wikt, wiksources communities about LinguaLibre. So you may see us again then ^^
Anyway, thank you for the push in Automn. We weren't able to immediately convert your points into actions but it still injected energy and vision to LinguaLibre which helped snowball the current dynamic. Wish you a good day ! Yug (talk) 07:20, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

pdf, djvu and jp2Edit

I took a tour of the distributed today and found F2 for File:The wonders of optics (IA wondersofoptics00mari).pdf which has images, that I am firstly interested in. I was going to ask if you could do the F2 thing at source.

I want the djvu to be here, but IA Upload prevents this because the pdf is already here. A mistake I made with IA Upload was to not toggle the choices after requesting the djvu. If you promise to toggle the choices (after it gets the metadata) and request the jp2, you can look at this diff which shows how to get past the block: Revision of File:The wonders of optics (IA wondersofoptics00mari).pdf. The source can be just pasted as a link, I don't know why I hid that like that... (thinking about it while I pasted the diff numbers).

The uploader looks for something. The author of the bot that made the uploads didn't know about IA Upload.

I am in the process of using IA Uploader on that text, when finished it should be here: The wonders of optics (1869).djvu could you put that on your list? I found it at PP....--RaboKarbakian (talk) 17:03, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

@RaboKarbakian: It's so awesome of you to join! Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. There's around 1,700 texts and I can't do it all by myself. Don't worry about the DJVU vs PDF. Currently, there is no way to upload both formats. For now, just use whatever format is available and do the merge-and-split. There's plans to support JP2 directly that will fix the root of the problem.
One major thing to look out. DP somethings removes blank pages, so always check the first and last page. If the last page does not match, then they removed a page somewhere. These are the hard cases.
After you're done the merge-and-split, feel free to record it on the page where I post the projects that I've done. It's a collaborative space and belong as much to you as to me. Really looking forwards to working together. Languageseeker (talk) 18:22, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
Last I knew, they supported both. You didn't look at the diff, did you? I use too many words sometimes.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 18:29, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
The optics book is in the process of being re-ocred. My many words were how to upload, anyways, when the pdf is here. It is not a policy. It is more of a glitch.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 18:34, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
I think that you have to use the Commons "Upload File" tool. It's even harder when the IA tool does not work. Languageseeker (talk) 18:36, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
@RaboKarbakian: I created the page for you and the merge-and-split is cued. [[1]] Have fun! Languageseeker (talk) 20:36, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

File:U.S. Marine Operations In Korea 1950-1953 (Volume 3).djvuEdit

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:U.S. Marine Operations In Korea 1950-1953 (Volume 3).djvu seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file description page.

This isn't pd-old-70. At best it's a PD-US-Gov variant I think. Was this an official publication of the USMC?

There also seemed to be a 'reprint' rights claim in the first few pages of the volume by a third party printer/publisher. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 16:07, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

@ShakespeareFan00: I uploaded this automatically via the IA upload tool. However, I agree that this is the wrong license. Also, I think that the book is missing blank pages. Not sure what to do. Thoughts? Languageseeker (talk) 16:09, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
Absence of blank pages isn't a problem.. I would suggest asking for assistance in updating the license. COM:VPCOPY can help. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:46, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

Morevols - note..Edit

Rather than list them individually... I'll use a heading to note the morevols situations I've found, in relation to Index's you attempting to add or improve at English Wikisource. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:58, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

I created {{Morevols}} to mark the situation I had found for individual books the IA books mass upload Fæ was still running. If you are good at finding things it might be worth trying to match up volume sets based on titles/authors and IA identifiers. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:22, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

  • @: , I think some of the above are the morevols situation I discussed earlier on your talk page. Languageseeker I think is trying to upload volume sets for works where there is a match to PGDP texts, And so grabbing scans is good. (Some are Djvu sets rather than PDF) No volume set I've mentioned above is more than 8 vols though..so..
  • @Languageseeker: Are you are able to provide a batch list of IA identifiers for multi-volume sets, in relation to the PGDP texts you are tying to match/split for Wikisource?

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:22, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

  • BTW I would strongly suggest, looking at what the IA Books upload managed in just under a year. 1.3 million items (And still growing.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:27, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
@, ShakespeareFan00: Thank you for the information. I still have about 1,300 files to process. The greatest help at this point would be to extract the IA from the HTML files, upload them to Commons, batch import them into Wikisource, and then generate a list with the Index page matched to the Project ID from PGDP. Don't know if this is possible, but it would save me days of work. Languageseeker (talk) 21:44, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
I am asking about these also so I know how many redlinks to put in link templates at Wikisource :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 16:26, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: 16, I uploaded all that I could with that set URL and I'll need to try and hunt down the other volumes. Languageseeker (talk) 17:04, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Index:Historic_highways_of_America_(Volume_1).djvu&oldid=11111495

Generally if something has more than 4 vols, or is a serial publication which was issued on a regular frequency, a volume links template get's created. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:21, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

File:Life histories of North American gulls and terns; order Longipennes (IA lifehistoriesof00bent).pdf,Edit

Are there other Smithonsian publications from pre 1926 that could be uploaded? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:27, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

@ShakespeareFan00: There's an entire series of them that should be in PD-US-GOVT. Languageseeker (talk) 20:01, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

PDF versus individual pagesEdit

I'm not very clear on why you are uploading individual page files for Lippincotts Monthly Magazine, such as this from Volume 53, rather than upload a PDF of the entire Vol 53. I'd be interested to know your thinking. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:38, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

@Tagishsimon: The PDF results in either a degraded image quality or a vastly increased size for lossless compression, is much slower in loading on Wikisource, and few advantages over individual images. When using lossless compression, the PDF size goes to over 2gb which Chunked Uploader cannot handle. I'd prefer to upload these as a single zip file, but Commons does not accept zips. Languageseeker (talk) 19:50, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
I'm quite unfamiliar in this area: do the individual pages get linked together in Commons? --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:52, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
@Tagishsimon: Nope, I proposed an Phabricator to allow for the uploading of a book scan as a zip file and the leadership made it clear that it would never happen. Instead, I was told that individual images are the way to go. So, here we are... Languageseeker (talk)
Are you sure they do? I've routinely downloaded books from HathiTrust and more often than not the PDFs that result are compressed quite well (usually JP2 images or CCITT B&W format, which are generally high-quality). Mahir256 (talk) 03:49, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
@Mahir256: The issues is the loss of quality that occurs during the conversion from PDF to images. Lippincotts Monthly Magazine is heavily illustrated and compressing the raw scan will degrade the quality. In general, I find the Wikisource workflow a bit strange Download Images -> Upload to IA -> Wait a Day -> Hope the IA tool Works -> Upload to Commons -> Set up Index -> Extract Image from PDF for display on the Page ns -> tell user to go to Haithi Trust for a high quality scan to crop the images from. I think that Download Image -> Upload to Common -> Set Up Index -> Use Crop tool seems like a much smoother workflow. Languageseeker (talk) 03:59, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
I have downloaded Volume 53 from HathiTrust myself; the entire PDF is ~238MB (versus whatever ~926*800KB is with the images you've uploaded), so the compression used is JP2 (which as a basis yields higher quality images). Once I strip the watermarks I plan to upload it to Commons myself. If you'd like me to similarly download and process other PDFs from HathiTrust, let me know. Mahir256 (talk) 16:51, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
@Mahir256: While I appreciate the offer of help, the problem with that approach is that the JPEG/PNG to JP2 to PDF conversion is not lossless. I'm uploading the individual images to avoid losing quality. There's an entire long proposal for allowing DJVU duplicates of PDF on Commons because of the quality loss inherent in PDFs. Thanks for uploading File:Ham-1637-22279x-fol-c03-049.tif. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thank you.

Notification about possible deletionEdit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

When We Were Young Part 2Edit

Hi,

Please see this request for immediate removal. I don't know if there's any point in correcting the files further.

Regards PawełMM (talk) 22:45, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

@PawełMM: I'm really sorry about this. The book is in the PD in the US and I'll see what happens on Commons. Languageseeker (talk) 00:48, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
Don't worry. You can always make a mistake. Copyright is complicated and something can always be overlooked. Just a shame about my, as it turned out, unnecessary work. Regards PawełMM (talk) 05:19, 2 June 2021 (UTC).
@PawełMM: If you still have the files, could you upload them to en.wikisource.org? This is the site where the book is being worked upon and they allow files that are PD-US, but under copyright elsewhere. When We Were Very Young and Copyright Statement Languageseeker (talk) 12:16, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
