File:DEU Roetgen COA.png --> File:DEU Roetgen COA.svgEdit

Is there a reason you're replacing the SVG image with the PNG image?Evrik (talk) 03:12, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

@Evrik: - Yes there is. The SVG is a manually redrawn version following a poor (205 × 217px) PNG. The new PNG is a scan of the original drawing that is authorized by the municipality. I replaced it because of the clause in the VVA-Tag regarding the SVG saying: "It should be used in place of this raster image when not inferior." Nothing can be better than the original. You agree? -- MaxxL - talk 05:42, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
No, svg is the preferred format.. Instead of going through all the wikis and making the change. Simply convert your file to svg and overwrite the existing file. Also, explain why you are doing this. Evrik (talk) 15:59, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
@Evrik: - Right. SVG is the preferred format if the graphic content is identical with the bitmap. I myself draw SVG-COA's to the best of my ability. But my efforts end when there is a high resolution scan of the official municipal COA, which is by law here in Germany the only version the bearer of the COA accepts as legitimate as it is part of the grant. Elsewhere the blazon is the COA but here in Germany the official handcrafted version of the selected heraldist is the only legal. My fellow volunteers of the German "Pojekt Wappen" and I strive mutually to populate the wikis with the technically best and the most authentic images of German municipal heraldry.
If you are a skilled artist and familiar with SVG-editors like Inkscape or Illustrator feel free to provide the project with you desired sketch. We will discuss your contribution at Wappenwerkstatt (COA workshop) as we have done with every controversial image in the past. -- MaxxL - talk 17:33, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, no. In fact, you should not have overwritten the file the way you did. I will fix that now. Evrik (talk) 03:19, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

I'm very surprised, that someone like you, @Evrik:, who never load up coat of arms, intermeddles in this matter. What is your intension? MaxxL and me (uploader of the svg-file) are in compliance to place the best CoA in the articles. My SVG is in this case not the best, because the original is more detailed. --Jürgen Krause (talk) 12:59, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

  • First, I don't have a problem with changing the name of File:Wappen von Roetgen.png to File:DEU Roetgen COA.png. What I have an issue with is overwriting the image with a different image. Second, the svg images are preferred to the png images. In looking at the the png that is being offered by MaxxL, it appears to be a version of what already exists with File:DEU Roetgen COA.svg. So, I have two suggestions. First, upload the new image with its own name. Second, upload it as an svg. If you can't do either of those, there may be a problem. If what you really want is the file name, File:Wappen von Roetgen.png, I suggest moving that back to its original name and upload your file there. Evrik (talk) 16:00, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

I noticed that you uploaded a file using the same name as another file, which already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. If the file that you attempted to upload is within our project scope and is in the public domain or published under a free license, please upload it again under a different name. Thank you. For more information, please see Commons:Overwriting files.
