Symbols of Tannu TuvaEdit

For now two years, that large request on creating SVGs of tuvan flags can be found on my computer, and it it still not completely done yet. As I assume, it is a quite simple one, as mostly only text need to be changed. Could yo do it, if you have time?

For any Flag, please use the red coloras well as the aspect ratio from File:Flag of the Tuvan People's Republic (1941-1943).svg, and an equal size for the emblems in the flags. Make sure that the en:Yañalif letter is not lost.

Notes for myself:
  • The linked 1941-43 flag has a 2:1 aspect ratio and the colors

File:Proposed Oakdale station configuration (2005).svgEdit

I'm not sure if this falls under PD-CAGov. While it is a "public record" per the law, it was not directly created by a government employee. I'm not sure that merely being a publicly funded work means that HNTB does not retain copyright. (Frankly, this may well be a grey area in the law.) I wanted to get your thoughts rather than nominate it for deletion, as you probably have a better understanding of CA copyright than I do. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 17:27, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

My thought was that since it was a work commissioned by a California government agency [Caltrans], regardless of the original author, it is owned by the commissioning agency. As a consulting engineer, some of the reports I have prepared I can't even get a copy of the final product because it belongs to the client, not me. You bring up a good point, though – similar to how artwork commissioned by government is still copyrighted to the artist, not the owner. However, I could redraw the configuration using simple geometric shapes (street routes, tracks, platforms), omitting buildings and transit stops, which would remove any potential confusion. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 18:10, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
That may be a good idea. (I can also do so myself if you don't want to spend the time.) Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:04, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

35 mm perforation distanceEdit

Hi, My apologies, I would try and edit this myself but don't know wiki very well. The article in question is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/35_mm_film#/media/File:35mm_film_dimensions.svg

Hi, I noticed a small error in the image, or I am overlooking something... The dimensions given for the measurement between four perforations is given as 18.999 mm - however, the given distance between two holes, shown on the left, is 4.7498mm. I'm guessing that the measurement was meant to include four perforations per frame, but would actually equal the distance between five perforations. The line/arrow measurements, as currently given, might correctly read 14.2494 mm, instead of 18.999 mm.(Correct for a measurement between five perforations.) I might be wrong.

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.156.46.28 (talk) 19:55, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for the update - you are correct, and I will update this particular dimension to encompass five perfs. This is the so-called 4-perf size, the size of a standard motion picture frame. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 03:33, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

LRV imagesEdit

Unfortunately, I don't think that a number of the great MBTA LRV images you've recently uploaded are allowed on Commons. The MBTA images were taken by an unknown photographer; the person who owns the physical slides and uploaded them to flickr thus isn't the copyright holder. I deliberately haven't uploaded those slides for that reason.

With the Muni images, the {{PD-CAGov}} is - to my understanding - only applicable to direct employees of state and local agencies. Fortunately, {{PD-US-no notice}} is valid for those images since there was no copyright notice in the source book; I've switched it to that. Thanks for your great work on the LRV article, by the way! Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:53, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Dang it, I was hoping that they hadn't been uploaded just because of generalized snobbery against 110 film (they look great at thumbnail size, but at actual scan size, they're a little mushy). Pre-emptively, I'll also remove/attempt to replace those new MBTA LRV images as well. I'll continue to work on SLRV since there's still a lot of citation needed templates throughout. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 14:51, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, unfortunately it isn't just bias against old slides (I've been known to upload scanned slides in my time). Should I go ahead and delete them, or file a DR?
On a positive note, though, I've been in recent communication with the Muni Photo Archive folks. I should be able to obtain full-size versions of most photos from PUC, Public Works, and Muni photographers (not URR/MSR though) for Commons in limited numbers. At first look they have ~200 Boeing LRV photos (many near duplicates, though). Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:18, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
I think it's safe to delete them, as copyright cannot be established. If it's easier to go through the DR process, I'll support that as well. Re: the Muni Archive: Awesome news! If I had known more about the SLRVs when I first started riding them (first ride: 1992, on a freshman outing to the Haight) I probably would have taken pictures ... hindsight, of course. Although they were by all objective measures terrible, I have a soft spot for them and the Landor livery in general. I went to Boston right after the Bay Area and never realized those Green Line trains were the same, and should have taken more pictures of them, especially when I was commuting from Jamaica Plain to Cambridge daily.
I also uploaded a couple of documents from NTIS to Commons which are otherwise difficult to link directly; the Specification and a study to cut vehicle costs are cited as references in the USSLRV article and have some interesting details about the design. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 16:55, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
Okay, deletion is done. I'll see if I can dredge up some more MBTA shots. Sadly, I missed both the MBTA and Muni LRVS by a few years; I'll have to hold out for a museum ride. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:36, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
An unrelated comment not worth starting a new thread for: File:MBTA Rapid Transit.svg looks great. I'd recommend adding Hynes Convention Center and Assembly - they're both rapid transit stations rather than surface stops - and the E terminus is usually "Heath Street." Thanks for uploading File:Richmond BC - Bus 3405. (33704253523).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

All only have a PDM mark on Flickr (does not equal cc-zero) - see template on image and User:Ronhjones/PDMreply for more info. Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:34, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
I have sent a message to this flickr user requesting the license be changed to cc-zero. The user's intent is clear, from the user profile statement: "I use the Public Domain category in all the items that I upload. They are mostly photographs taken by myself or by members of my family that are no longer alive. It is my intention that anyone who wishes to use any of my uploads in another context should be free to do so without recourse to me. It would be nice if the pictures were credited if they are my or my family's photographs but I don't insist upon this - my only objective is to put items that interest me into the public domain for the enjoyment of others who might share my interests." This is clearly keeping in the spirit of cc-zero, but as explicit permission has not been granted through the licensing mark, I will abide with a deletion if relevant. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 15:02, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Mr Davies has graciously moved his Canadian photographs to cc-zero. I will re-upload these files. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 00:05, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Template:PD-WA-SMAEdit

I think you are wrong to characterize this with "PD" in the template name. What's going on here is something more like CC-0, which you will note has a template name that does not include the phrase "PD". Although the intent is very like PD, it is not at all clear that a license like this actually puts the image in the public domain. So I think we should rename this as just "WA-SMA".

Also, for what it's worth, from my communications with the archivists in the past, there are things in the archive where someone other than the city owns the copyright. A recent example in their Flickr stream is https://www.flickr.com/photos/seattlemunicipalarchives/40599684133/in/dateposted/. Part of the reason they release most images under a CC license on their Flickr stream is to clarify that these are images where the City owns the relevant rights and can license, which is not the case for everything in the archive. - Jmabel ! talk 17:09, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

You're right, it seems closer to CC-BY, although not very strictly. Is there a sweeping ruling/declaration that states that any work by a Washington state or local government employee is part of the public domain like Template:PD-CAGov, which I was hoping to find? I may have been prematurely excited to create the template after stumbling upon the set of four source photos that were the basis for the 1969 CID aerial that SMA had posted to their Flickr stream with an explicit CC-BY license. Thanks, Mliu92 (talk) 21:14, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
No, there isn't. Seattle's openness in this respect is a city-level decision and (really) a department-level decision by the City Archivist's office. By the way, Seattle has an unusually robust archive for a city of its size: I believe the office has 6 full-time employees, pretty big for a city of about 600,000. If NYC had a proportionately large archivist's office it would be 80 people! - Jmabel ! talk 00:24, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
Argggh: I wasn't thinking above. "WA-SMA" may have been a poor choice, because "WA" has little to do with it. Sorry to steer you the wrong way. I guess we can live with it, but it probably isn't the greatest name. - Jmabel ! talk 00:28, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
Naw, it was my fault for suggesting PD-WA-SMA in the first place. I'll move it to BY-SMA for now and keep working on the template. Thanks for the help and (when you see them again), thank the archivists for me! Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 14:07, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
