c-span video posts. edit

Thanks for your contribution to wikimedia commons :) I would like to sugest you check out metavid.org and archive.org for your c-span video uploads. For a few reasons.

  • metavid.org captures from the source broadcasts and encodes to ogg directly so the quality is of much higher quality ( no low-quality web stream re-encodes )
  • Metavid.org blocks out the c-span trademark which is protected by trademark law. [1] ( commons should try to avoid the use of trademarks in footage)
  • Metavid.org has a lot of metadata so its easy to find things. It looks like you seem to be uploading opening prayers which has a category on metavid.org
  • There is a short tutorial on how to upload commons videos here

This image is insufficiently sourced: "Official Government Photo" is no valid source. Please state the html-link where the image can be found. Thank you in advance. --High Contrast (talk) 13:22, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
For a minute, couldn't find this location to respond, so just left a note on your talk page. Please look at the additional information I added (the official White House government "blog" that had the photo listed as a White House photo) and let me know if this is sufficient. I hope so! Thanks! NearTheZoo (talk) 15:54, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Dear High Contrast, I think you agree this problem has been fixed, because the info I recently added to the image has been "cleaned up" and properly entered (and now I understand the process - so, thanks!). However, the warning banner is still on this talk page, and I don't know if I am allowed to remove it, or only you are. If everything is all right, could you remove it, so that I can be sure? Again -- thanks! NearTheZoo (talk) 11:34, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Everything okay now. --High Contrast (talk) 19:57, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Deleted U.S. government images

Deleted images edit

Sorry for the delay, but locating the specific images among all the ones I deleted took longer than I expected. Those are the images you need to find source information:

  • File:BioDSCF0020.jpg is not needed to be restored, you did so at ArnoldResnicoffUSAF.jpg
  • File:Beirut kippa.jpg is a black & white photo of Resnicoff wearing a kippa. Description said "Beirut 1983 - Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff, Chaplain, United States Navy. Source=U.S. Government - photo taken by a Navy photojournalist in Beirut"
  • File:DRVH USSPugetSound.gif is a black & white photo of a man with a navy uniform giving a speech. Description said "Official DOD photo of the first shipboard ceremony for the U.S. National Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, onboard USS Puget Sound, the Sixth Fleet Flagship, during a port visit to Malaga, Spain."
  • File:1999 Chiefs of Chaplains Conference.JPG Resnicoff making a speech. Description said "U.S.European Command Chaplain, Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff, flanked by two Swiss Guards, speaking at the 1999 International Military Chiefs of Chaplains Conference, Geneva, Switzerland."
  • File:CampHopeAlbania.jpg Resnicoff in military uniform, giving things to people at a camp. Description said "Camp Hope, Albania, 1999 - U.S. Navy Chaplain, Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff (Command Chaplain, United States European Command), visiting refugee children in Camp Hope, Albania
  • File:Laromme torah.jpg Description said "Caption excerpted from JWB Circle, Winter, 1983/84 issue: SIXTH FLEET VISITS ISRAEL: Dedication of U.S. Sixth Fleet lounge at Jerusalem Laromme Hotel. Sixth Fleet Chaplain Arnold Resnicoff carries the Sefer Torah. Rabbi Benjamin Pery, the hotel's rabbis, is at left. Holding the talit over Resnicoff is Haifa Navy Base Chaplain Menashe Schwartz."
  • File:Chiefs.JPG Description said "Milawi, 1998, with Chiefs of Chaplains of S. Africa and Swaziland - U.S. Navy Chaplain, Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff (Command Chaplain, United States European Command), with Chiefs of Chaplains from S. Africa and Swaziland"
  • File:Ceremony.jpg Description said "National Civic Commemoration of Holocaust Days of Remembrance, Capitol Rotunda, with Navy Chaplain, Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff, offering closing prayer"

Tell me when you find more information about those images Belgrano (talk) 16:21, 1 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much! I will try to track down source information! NearTheZoo (talk) 22:59, 1 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Dear Belgrano, Please let me know whether you would prefer I send info to your page or print here. For now, here is some info I have found, as of January 2, 2011:
  • File:USS_PugetSound.gif Official U.S. Navy photo, printed in "The Military Chaplain," July-Aug 1984, with caption: "Official Navy Photo: by PHAN J. C. MaCormick." Also found in printed in "The Jewish Week, June 8, 1984, with caption: "Photo: U.S.Navy."
  • File:Beirut_kippa.jpg Official U.S. Navy photo, printed in official U.S. Navy publication, "The Navigator, Naval Training Center, Orlando," Vol 25, No.21, Nov 1992, "Navy Orlando Chaplain Helped Dedicate the Wall." Also printed in separate U.S. Navy publication, "Soundings, U.S. Naval Station Norfolk Virginia, Nov. 17, 1983. In addition to these official U.S. Navy publications, the photo is printed in in numerous civilian publications with no copyright note, including Jewish War Veterans Calendar (for the year, 1990), where it is used as an illustration for the month of October.
  • File:Laromme_Torah.jpg Official U.S. Navy photo, printed in "Rollcall," the newsletter for the JWB Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy, an official "DOD (Department of Defense) Endorsing Agency," Winter 1983/1984. The photo is captioned, "U.S. Navy Chaplain Brings Innovations to Western Wall." This publication frequently prints photos sent by official DOD and U.S.Navy public affairs offices, which is the source when no copyright attribution is given.
  • File:CampHopeAlbania.jpg Official U.S. Army photo, published online as an official photo for the U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) but has since been taken down. I am trying to figure out if some official can certify that it is an official photo, but I'm not 100% sure I can do that. I will keep trying to get better resource info for this photo -- and for the other photos I have not mentioned yet. Thank you again for your patience and help! Dear Belgrano, Info on one more photo: *File:CampHopeAlbania.jpg Available online at flikr.com: http://www.flickr.com/photos/47462558@N04/5319786797, with the following information: Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff from United:States European Command passes out candy to refugee children at the United States Camp Hope in Fier, Albania . Camp Hope will :::soon become home for 20,000 refugees upon completion. Military personnel and civilian relief agents are working hand in hand to ensure refugees are provided life's basic essentials. Personnel are deployed to the region in support of Operation Shining Hope which is bringing relief to thousands of refugees in Albania and Macedonia displaced by the current unrest in the region of Kosovo, Yugoslavia. U.S. Military Photo 990524-F-5920L-001 , on file with USEUCOM Office of Public Affairs. Copy presented to Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff. Photo taken May 24, 1999. Dear Belgrano, a little more info on File:Beirut_kippa.jpg Please see new file, Resnicoff_BeirutKippa.jpg which has all the correct documentation for a U.S. military (U.S. Marine Corps) photo, including the name of the photographer: SSGT Robert E. Kline. Beirut_kippa.jpg is almost definitely a companion photo, taken by the same photographer on the same day. The new one has documentation because only one photo was included in the official military history of that operation. NearTheZoo (talk) 16:34, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, NearTheZoo!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

MLK Memorial photos

File:MLK_Stone_of_Hope.png edit

File:MLK_Stone_of_Hope.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

hi, nice photos, however, for public works of art, the artist may retain the copyright. see the Korean War Memorial case. i would strongly advise to upload the best of these to english wikipedia with a "non-free 3D art" tag, and rationale, since they allow "fair use" there, which they do not in commons. if you have any questions let me know. btw, if you come to some DC meetups, we can discuss more. (there is one Fri. 30th) Slowking4 (talk) 20:20, 19 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
btw there is a photo meetup, part of the wiki loves monuments [2]. Slowking4 †@1₭ 02:39, 30 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much, Slowking4! I especially appreciate the advice about using the special template for photos uploaded specifically for the English wikipedia as opposed to wikimedia commons. I'm always learning, and this is an important lesson. I'm a little busy now in terms of adding wiki DC mtgs to my schedule--but sometime in the future my schedule might change. Thanks also for this note about mtgs, though. Best wishes, NearTheZoo (talk) 02:52, 30 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Shuk pictures

Shuk pictures edit

Yes, I did happen to come across the small shul in one of the shuk alleys, and will try to find it on my memory card and upload it. I also have a better picture of the closed shuk than what is posted on the article. As I shop at the shuk every week, I'll also try to take a picture of the open shuk some time. Regarding Yad Kennedy, I have never been there. But wherever I travel, my camera comes, too! Best, Yoninah (talk) 17:49, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Yoninah! It's nice being "partners" for the improvement of this article. I love the market, and have enjoyed seeing its revitalization over the years. (I'm a particular fan of Fish and Chips, and Pasta Basta!) If you have a chance to look at the article on Yad Kennedy, you'll see I've put a lot of work into improving it. I also recommended to the Keren Kayemet that they consider working with the Israel govt to host a special event there in November 2013, which would be the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's assassination. Thanks for all your wiki work! 66.44.40.85 18:19, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ralph Randolph Gurley

Ralph Randolph Gurley edit

Hi NearTheZoo, an old photograph which you have uploaded as File:Ralph Randolph Gurley.jpg and added to the English Wikipedia article on Ralph Randolph Gurley is nonetheless a picture of Jehudi Ashmun, as clearly stated in the original scan from which you extracted this image. Gurley is the author of the book which contains the portrait, not the person in the portrait.--84.108.212.141 00:30, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well, as they say in many languages, "Oops!" :) Thanks for catching this mistake! I'll correct this mistake. NearTheZoo (talk) 00:44, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
