Primarias Abiertas: Un votante registrado puede votar en cualquier primaria de cualquier partido independientemente a su afiliación a un partido. Cuando los votantes no se han registrado antes de las primarias, se le denomina como "escoge a un partido de primaria" porque el votante puede escoger el partido en la que él o ella desea votar. Debido al carácter abierto de este sistema, una práctica conocida como "asalto" o raiding podría ocurrir.
El "Asalto" consiste en los votantes que votan por su partido y después votan por otro partido, y así ayudar a escoger al adversario del partido oponente.
