Hello, PatHadley!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Pyramid of the Sun YORYM TA2277.jpg edit

hi, nice image. hope you agree with my metadata cleanup. if you have only one image at a time, the old uploader will allow photograph template, and GWtoolset is the future, but not easy yet, i've been using Help:VisualFileChange.js to strip off the information template wrapper, as a batch process without using a bot, but it takes some tweaking. cheers Slowking4Farmbrough's revenge 16:35, 5 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Slowking4. Thanks for tidying that one! I knew I'd miss something. We're all set to use GWToolset with the York Museums Trust collection but the files I needed weren't yet synchronised to the online collection! Soon we hope! Cheers, PatHadley (talk) 12:24, 6 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Anubis Mask from Harrogate edit

Click the thumbnail in Chrome or Firefox, then move the mouse pointer around to rotate the mask

Hello PatHadley,

I'm amazed by the quality of your photography, especially those from GLAM! As I'm experimenting with Scalable Vector Graphics to see what it can do for Wikimedia, I'm creating a 3D object viewer and would like to use your Anubis mask from Harrogate. Would you happen to have a photograph taken from the rear but higher up? I could find all 8 cardinal directions at both elevations except for this shot.

Many thanks,
cmglee (talk) 01:30, 17 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Cmglee: ! That's a great reuse of the Anubis Mask images! Unfortunately, I didn't take the images, they were taken a few years ago for an education project (link). In a classic example of unfortunate digital preservation issues, the digital 3D model of the mask has now been lost and those were the only photos the curator could find on the system! Sorry that means there's a gap in your lovely interactive! Cheers, PatHadley (talk) 12:39, 19 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply, Pat. That's a pity, but it's all right; I've used the overhead view for that position. Cheers, cmglee (talk) 12:45, 19 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open! edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear PatHadley,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Your VFC installation method is deprecated edit

Hello PatHadley, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Category:Images from the Australian National Maritime Museum edit

Why are you deleting files out of Category:Images from the Australian National Maritime Museum? Broichmore (talk) 09:27, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Broichmore: I haven't deleted any :-) I've moved the images into a nested category Category:Arthur Thomas Wood in an effort to prevent over categorisation per Commons:Categories. But, because of Category:Images from the Australian National Maritime Museum being hidden you might not see it as clearly depending on your preferences? It's arguable whether collections of photographs as they exist in museums/archives are usefully reproduced on Commons. Feel free to change it back if you have a strong preference PatHadley (talk) 09:50, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
I see what you mean, your certainly right as long as all of this photographer's portfolio is owned by only this one institution. It's my belief that this knd of category (created for attribution / source / ownership reasons, as opposed to where I got it from) pertains to individual images and not categories as such. Thats why its hidden to stop people meddling with it. I only know of one other photographer whose entire collection has only one owner. Broichmore (talk) 10:47, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Cool. Well there are several complete collections just in the ANMM collection (eg, File:10 footer CORNSTALK on Sydney Harbour (8005417364).jpg this from the Hall Collection). I think it's quite common for museums/archives to have entire collections donated to them. I guess the categorisation needs to be done pragmatically on how the images are likely to be used on Wikipedia. For the Arthur Thomas Wood example I think they can be added usefully to the articles on the ship and battles. To be honest I'm only doing a bit of casual organising and editing at the moment! I made the category move quite casually but now you've made me think about it! PatHadley (talk) 11:12, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
