File talk:OSE-Logo.svg edit

Fair use images are not allowed on Commons. All images on Commons must by public domain or available under a free license.

By uploading non-free logos here and then using them on Wikipedia you cause a major disruption: The existing non-free, fair use image on Wikipedia is deleted (as unused), later your non-free upload on Commons is deleted as well (as a copyvio) and the logo is no longer available for the Wikipedia article. SV1XV (talk) 20:53, 24 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey, thanks for the notification. I am a bit confused as to how one is able to upload non-free logos, since there are existing ones already in use such as the Amtrak logo on the Amtrak page and so on. The lisencing for that logo uses an non-free image rationale that states the logo is not free. I would appreciate the help, Philly boy92 (talk) 21:14, 25 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Non-free logos can't be uploaded to Commons, so they must be uploaded locally onto the English Wikipedia, to do this go w:Wikipedia:Upload, and click on one of the options for logos (organization, brand...), which should take you to the appropriate upload form. An additional complication though is not all logos are copyrighted (non-free), and free logos can be uploaded to Commons. Those containing simple font and simple shapes are not eligible for copyright, see w:Threshold of originality for an article on this issue, and Threshold of originality on Commons for examples of such logos. There is no clear line on when a logo is complicated enough to cross the threshold of originality, and there are different standards in different countries. I have already expressed the belief that File:OSE-Logo.svg is probably copyright free, as it is just coloured lines. CT Cooper · talk 23:11, 25 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Great thanks for the help! I will keep the file on commons as is until it is decided whether it does fall under the category of 'not original enough for copyright' or not and then upload it on the English wikipedia. --Philly boy92 (talk) 01:32, 26 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Emblem of Greece edit

I see you uploaded a new version with all blue and white within a circle. This matches what I see on the Hellenic President's website. However, you said in the comment box that it never is shown in colour, but the previous version is used on the Greek Embassy's website to Canada. Therefore I feel the previous version with green leaves should also be uploaded seperately. What are your thoughts? Fry1989 (talk) 19:25, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Right, I thought you may be Greek, or of Greek heritage, due to your extensive work on Greek symbols. I also agree with you about the version with green leaves. It appears to be an anomaly, and I wasn't sure if I should upload it myself or not without your opinion. Thanks :) Fry1989 (talk) 16:54, 10 January 2011
The Coat of Arms of Greece is described in Law 48/1975 in color. According to Part 2, it consists of a silver cross on a blue shield. The color of the leaves making the wreath is not specified, so they could be either gold or proper (green). Usually it is shown in gold. SV1XV (talk) 19:34, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Law 48/1975 states that
"The Emblem of the Hellenic Republic is cyan, with an escutcheon forming an edge on the middle of its lower bottom side, it bears an argent cross in the middle and is engulfed entirely by two laurel leaves that meet under the edge of the escutcheon."
In heraldry the color 'white' is almost never used, but the color 'argent' is used in its place. The color 'silver' is also represented by 'argent' in heraldry. Therefore, the coat of arms would be 'cyan and argent' in heraldic terms and 'blue and white' in everyday language. Also, what do you mean 'usually it is shown in gold'? None of the official bodies of the Hellenic Republic ever show the national emblem in any other combination of colors than 'blue and white' and 'black and white'. It is never shown in gold unless it is used to represent the military. --Philly boy92 (talk) 12:06, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

No need for a showoff with heraldic names of colours (tinctures & metals), I also know them very well but I prefer not to use them in an informal discussion. However, the greek coat of arms is used also in color with a gold wreath, see 4 dr stamp of 1977-07-23. Also the use of a color version by the military does not represent specifically the military, it is just the national emblem. So the CoA exists in color (silver/blue). The color of the leaves is not specified, traditionally gold is used, but proper cannot be ruled out.

You also made a mistake by overwriting the existing color version of File:Coat of arms of Greece.svg with your monochrome version. You must upload it under a new filename and then request an admin to revert the old file to the previous version, so its history is not lost.SV1XV (talk) 18:28, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

First of, I was not showing off. I was simply explaining why my version is as is. Secondly, you have provided absolutely no evidence to support your cause of "the coat of arms is coloured". It is coloured in the sense that it is blue and argent, but it is not coloured in the sense that every element is painted in its natural colours (white cross, blue field, black olives, green laurel leaves). Additionally, traditionally the coat of arms appears blue and white - never with gold laurel leaves. The only 'golden' versions that appear are on the flag of the president of Greece and on the caps of military officers, obviously because of the material the CoA is made of in that case. If you can provide any official evidence to support your claim, we can continue with this discussion. If not, I will not revert my version simply because of your claims. --Philly boy92 (talk) 18:57, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
You are a very talented designer but, unfortunately, you damage the project with your actions. SV1XV (talk) 19:40, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

As I said before, if you can provide any evidence to support your claim I will gladly continue the discussion. The fact of the matter is, your supposed "coloured version" never appears on official document or website:

And even if it did appear on the ministry of Foreign Affairs previously, it doesnt under the current administration. The fact that no provision is provided for a 'coloured' version of the Emblem doesnt mean anyone can just make their own coloured version. --Philly boy92 (talk) 20:07, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I gave you evidence which you chose to ignore. SV1XV (talk) 20:39, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
You gave no evidence apart from your quotation of Law 48, which I have quoted as well. --Philly boy92 (talk) 20:41, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I uploaded the version with green leaves under "Coat of arms of Greece (colour)". Also, the user above nominated the Arms for deletion, when what he wanted was for them to be reverted. I removed that deletion nomination as that's not what it's for. Fry1989 (talk) 20:27, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Sarah fides!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Photographer's advice: use jpg for photographs and png for drawings, upload maximum-resolution version from flickr (click with right mouse button on the flickr image and choose "original"), check your monitor for color balance - your color enhancement on this image seems way overtop to me. Materialscientist (talk) 22:37, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Better, but I would take the high-res original from flickr and upload as jpg, maybe brighten a bit, without applying unsharp mask or other contrast enhancement - not a big problem with this particular image, just a note for the future. Materialscientist (talk) 09:01, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Seal vs. Emblem vs. Coat of Arms edit

I notice that you seem to know a fair amount regarding the Greek coat of arms. I'm trying to find out (for my daughter's school project) if there is an official national seal. We've found a seal for Athens as well as old seals for Greece, but for current symbols all we find is the coat of arms. Is there a separate seal? If not, is the coat of arms also considered the seal, or is there just no seal whatsoever? Thank you

Update request for File:Athens Metro.svg and File:Athens-metro-map-el.png edit

Hello.

Can you update File:Athens Metro.svg and File:Athens-metro-map-el.png if you have the time and interest? I cannot update SVG files, and this PNG file is also complicated for me. I have updated five Athens Metro PNG maps last summer which were not complicated for me to edit, but these two files are too difficult for me.

Kindest regards.

File:Γλωσσικές μειονότητες Φλώρινας και Αριδαίας.svg edit

I have been trying to translate in Greek of the map you have created in English, but, being digitally semi-literate, I keep causing black boxes to appear instead of a text box. Could you perhaps take a look and perhaps fix this issue? If yes, I would be truly thankful. Cheers, Ασμοδαίος (talk) 19:11, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open! edit

Dear Sarah fides,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.

Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:04, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

File:Hellenic Parliament logo.svg edit

File:Hellenic Parliament logo.svg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: The relevant exception in Greek copyright law refers to "official texts expressive of the authority of the State, notably a legislative, administrative or judicial text". This is not text, it is a logo.
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hellenic Republic CoA-1973 edit

Hello there, So while browsing ΦΕΚs, I stumbled upon ΦΕΚ 140Α/1973(http://www.et.gr/idocs-nph/search/pdfViewerForm.html?args=5C7QrtC22wF6rlIz2Gsd0ndtvSoClrL8ii-Ftf96MRB5MXD0LzQTLWPU9yLzB8V68knBzLCmTXKaO6fpVZ6Lx9hLslJUqeiQhDW3UqEYxp967uQ9QJI80RJBC1xW8jiM-ChIQs1NqoU.) which basically published the finalized version of the Coat of Arms of Papadopoulos' (and later on, Ioannides') Hellenic Republic.

I've appealed to Diafora previously, but to no avail. What differentiates this version, from the already one is that this appeared on passports, ΦΕΚs, military uniforms and other official uses, whilst the rounded design by Ι.ΣΤΙΝ (I have no clue about who designed this one) was used only on coins.

This is not a request-just check it out if you're interested!

Take care, Thanmad Productions (talk) 14:01, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Sarah fides, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Flag of Chania.svg

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

File:Coat of arms of Greece.svg edit

I believe we should revert this image back to the revert I made in the 13th of August 2022, the vine leaves on the current coat of arms are poor quality and do not match with official Government/Republic websites and other sources.

It would be respectful and proper to have a more high quality coat of arms. Please consider this.

SymeonHellas (talk) 11:23, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@SymeonHellas The government doesn't use the coat of arms, it uses a stylised version of the arms as a logo ([1]). I don't think the original version is better, nor more accurate. But if you think this needs to be discussed then please open a request for comment to get others involved. --Sarah fides (talk) 10:23, 12 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
