Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Yes, sorry. This stems back to when I thought PD review was going to cover all images. I agree this is an incorrect tag and have fixed it accordingly. Regarding this edit, thank you for assuming good faith. I did not even realize that the photo was on Flickr. I got it and another one directly from the creator. Hi! The image is an other version of File:Tool-Maynard-Rosklide.jpg and that image was reviewed by the Flickr review bot. So I guess we can asume, that license was free at that time. Will you look at it? --MGA73 (talk) 12:21, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi!

The Category:PD files for review was flooded some time ago and perhaps therefore PD review seems to have stopped. After some discussion on Commons_talk:PD_files#Has_review_stopped? the category has been cleaned up.

Perhaps you would like to come back and take a look at some of the remaining files?
