Hi Seddon, you are stating on the second image that this one was edited by you. You do not tell, however, what you did and I fail to see the difference on an initial view of these two pictures. Could you please elaborate this? The point is that the first of these two images was tagged as dupe which is ok only if we have two identical copies of the same image. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hello Seddon,
I have nominated your upload File:Dimorphos_composite.jpg (recently featured in the news on Wikipedia) for speedy deletion. Not only is the license wrong, it is also a likely copyright violation. If the original image creator did waive their copyright and I missed that then I apologize, but I see no indication for that. Renerpho (talk) 15:27, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

If an image consists entirely of public domain imagery, it surely in its entirety remains public domain and is not copyrightable. Ignoring the fact that Doug Ellison is a NASA employee, I don't see how this differs from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Juno_flyby_of_Jupiter,_Perijove_16_(PIA22692).jpg any many other Juno images which were often made by citizen scientists and in that instance the author claims copyright under CC-NC-BY. The stitching process is non-trivial. JUNO images are a special case, as a citizen-science project where people upload their images to the server. Besides, one of the first things that Doug Ellison says on their Twitter profile is that this is "Not a NASA account". Renerpho (talk) 16:10, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

"in that instance the author claims copyright under CC-NC-BY" -- what are you referring to here? The Juno image you linked to has "PD-NASA" as its license, not CC-NC-BY. Is that even correct, I don't know, but it's not really relevant for the Dimorphos file. Renerpho (talk) 16:12, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 1 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.
