Hello, Senapa!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Though the collection of images for the contest has been completed (as we informed you previously), the organizers of the contest "Wikipedia loves Petersburg" are glad to update you on the current course of events.

Our jury is working hard; on November, 1 it will declare the winners and the recipients of special prizes. We ask those of you who have not yet set up an e-mail address to do it at user preferences page so that the jury could contact the participants of the contest and to hand out the awards. The winners of the European-wide Wiki Loves Monuments competition will be announced later, in mid-November.

Already on November 2 in St. Petersburg, the Art-hotel "Rachmaninov", located on 5, Kazanskaya St., will open an exhibition of works by the participants of the contest. We inform you about the opening time via the website http://wikilovesmonuments.ru/

If you have any questions or need help with Wikimedia Commons, you can contact user kaganer. You can ask any questions about the contest by sending an e-mail to info@wikimedia.ru

Thank you again for your participation!.

"Wikipedia loves Petersburg" contest results are summed upEdit

Wiki Loves Monuments Logo notext.svg

On November, 1 the winners of the contest "Wiki Loves Monuments" were announced.

It was difficult to select the winners. More than 450 users participated in the contest, having uploaded more than 4400 photographs. The Organizing Committee thanks everybody who took part, tried their hands, and agreed to make their work available to the whole world. There is fascinating work ahead of Wikipedia users: To employ the images to illustrate the articles in Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia which is available in 270 languages.

Do not get upset if you have not won. Look into Wikipedia articles - you may soon find your work there, to help people to visualise the buildings you have taken photographs of. Besides, we will contact you to hand you in a souvenir to recognize your particiation. We hope you will accept this sign of our gratitude.

If you have a chance, you can visit the exhibition of photographs, which has been organized in Saint Petersburg and shows some of the photographs submitted to the contest.

We hope you will participate in the future competitions planned by Wikimedia RU and thank you for your contribution.

You can ask any questions about the contest by sending an e-mail to info@wikimedia.ru.

Sincerely,
In the name of the Organizing Committee,
Lvova Anastasia.

Category:Mount Rainier National ParkEdit

Hi Steven Pavlov;

Thanks for your efforts to improve Category:Mount Rainier National Park. Today, you removed that category from File:Nisqually River 0534.JPG.[2]

I see that Category:Nisqually River is a subcategory of Category:Mount Rainier National Park, but does that make sense? Only a small portion of the Nisqually River is contained within the park. I would place it in Category:Pierce County, Washington, Category:Lewis County, Washington and Category:Thurston County, Washington. I've added those categories. I didn't find helpful guidance at Commons:Categories. But, I see that en:Nisqually River is not placed in Category:Mount Rainier National Park but is placed in county subcategories. I would remove Category:Mount Rainier National Park, but what is your opinion?

The cited picture depicts one of the major river valleys, forest, and a bridge on the main road in the park. Consequently, it seems to me that it should be in Category:Mount Rainier National Park. Thoughts? Best wishes, --Walter Siegmund (talk) 04:30, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

  • Thank you for the informative comment. My goal was to do 'Category: Mount Rainier National Park' more orderly. After thinking about your comment, I realized that your suggestions are most relevant. Namely: Remove 'Category: Mount Rainier National Park' from 'Category: Nisqually River' and also back 'Category: Mount Rainier National Park' to your photos.
Thanks again and sorry for the inconvenience. Steven Pavlov (talk) 05:21, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
  • Hi Steven Pavlov;
Thank you for your kind consideration of my comments. In the meantime, I noticed that Category:Paradise River is entirely within Mount Rainier National Park and it is in Category:Mount Rainier National Park. That is correct, I think. I removed Category:Mount Rainier National Park from my pictures of that river. Best wishes, --Walter Siegmund (talk) 21:41, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Hoary MarmotEdit

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Marmota_caligata_(Hoary_Marmot).jpg

I wonder if your Hoary Marmot photo is actually of a Vancouver Island Marmot, Marmota vancouverensis? It does have a "hoary" back cape, but on the other hand it's really dark with distinct white chest markings. It's the only marmot on Vancouver Island, so if you took the photo there that would be definitive.

I took this picture in Mount Rainier National Park, about here: https://maps.google.ru/maps?oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari&q=46°+47'+53%22+N++121°+44'+7%22+W&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x5490d30602345719:0x966a0aafc2dfdd24,%2B46°+47'+49.16%22,+-121°+44'+9.10%22&gl=ru&ei=lwowUcDCNerhiwLKw4CgCg&ved=0CC0Q8gEwAASteven P. Welcome, Dear Filemover!Edit

Commons File mover.svg

Hi Senapa, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please do not tag redirects as speedy. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Переименования файловEdit

Добрый день. Пожалуйста, помните, что это проект международный, и для большинства людей кириллица - это кракозюбры. Кроме того, файлу лучше давать максимально полезное и емкое имя. Например, не File:Пелевин И.А. Иоанн Грозный в келье Николы Юродивого, во Пскове.jpg, а что-то типа file:Ivan the Terrible at Nikola Fool for Christ by Ivan Pelevin (1877, Yugra museum).jpg. Так им намного удобней пользоваться и сохранять на компьютер без потери фактической информации. --Shakko (talk) 21:26, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

  • Благодарю за ценное замечание. Вы правы. В будущем, пожалуй, воздержусь от подобного переименования, так как сомневаюсь в своей способности грамотно переводить на английский. Steven P. (talk) 03:59, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletionEdit

Commons-emblem-issue.svg Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Томский листок. 1897. №199.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Bridges in Washington (state)Edit

I see you redirected Category:Bridges in Washington (state) by location to Category:Bridges in Washington (state) by county and, among other things, moved Category:Bridges in Mount Rainier National Park to the new category. This doesn't work. Mount Rainier National Park is not a county (it spans portions of Pierce and Lewis counties). I'd suggest restoring Category:Bridges in Washington (state) by location as a parent cat of both Category:Bridges in Washington (state) by county and Category:Bridges in Mount Rainier National Park, but if you can come up with something else that is also accurate I'd be open to that. - Jmabel ! talk 18:01, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Henry Thompson Bridge (2008).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). This also applies if you are the author yourself.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, and Commons:Permission if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the OTRS-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Henry Thompson Bridge (2008).jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.
