Diadumenos edit

Hi Shakko, I reverted your edit of Image:Farnese Diadumenos BM 501.jpg: the Farnese Diadumenos is considered a copy after an original by Phidias, not by Polykleitos. The ponderation is not the same: the foot of the free leg is not drawn back and raised as in typical Polykleitan contrapposto. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 09:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, surely, I see you know the subject. I'm just making the article about Phidias in russian wiki (ru:Фидий) and I've found how poorly is his gallery in wikimedia (Category:Phidias). Shame upon us! Maybe you have something free to add? Athena Lemnia e.g. or good Promachos? --Shakko 11:41, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hallo. Of course you have the right of producing derivate images from images already existing on Commoms. But a mere detail cut from one existing picture is considered a duplicate, and as such deleted. Is there any particular reason why you need the detail? If so, please make it clear in che caption/description. Othewise the duplicate image should go. Thank you. --User:G.dallorto 16:39, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for uploading this interesting fresco. I've cut a detail and worked with it in Photoshop, trying to remove perspective distortions because of lower point of shooting - in that program you can move the photos in 3D. Look, now it is good here in article[1]. Grazie once again, the camels are charming. --Shakko 19:09, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Toledo edit

Hello, Shakko, congratulations for your categorisations of the monuments of Toledo, they were needed!

I have changed the images you included in Category:Bab al-Mardum to Category:Cristo de la Luz (Toledo), because they correspond to the same building. This hermitage has had several names according to their historical use ( mosque and church)and culture. The Bab al-Mardum is the Arab gate of the city close to which the little mosque is located. So the mosque was named the Jimá Bab al-Mardum, meaning Jimá=mosque and Bab=Gate or Door. As the proper Bab al-Mardum, the gate, still exists, I think that it is clearer to use the other denomination, more widely spreaded, of Cristo de la Luz, or if not, Mosque of Bab al-Mardum. The category Category:Bab al-Mardum is still useful to include the images of the gate, but unfortunately I haven´t found any in Commons. Congratulations again for your work, and see you!--Balbo 18:44, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

See the gate. Note that the mosque can be seen at the end of the street. [2]

Your request edit

The statue you mention is not in Palazzo Barberini but in the Centrale Montemartini museum. However, I did not visit this museum recently (last time was in year 2000) and I do not have the picture you need.

My suggestion is to contact the uploader to check whether s/he can provide a better and bigger scan. Getting pictures in museums in Rome is becoming harder and harder, since they aer forbidding taking pictures and publishing them without their consent (I had to delete all my picutres of Museum di Villa Giulia because they complained with WikiCommons), therefore an ancient picture of the statue would possibily be the best solution after all (they can't sue a dead photographer.. :-) ). ...in France edit

Re: this edit, I know these categories are in wide use, but I was hoping you could tell me what they are supposed to include. I would think that a painting that is "in France" would be one that is physically located there; a painting "from France" or "of France" would be one made there and/or painted by a French person. You tagged the Gerome painting I linked to as being "in France," but it's presently located in the United States. Please let me know your thoughts. Cheers, Postdlf (talk) 21:01, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I thought about its provenance, not current location, to be true. And word "orientalistic paintings in France" for me was like "french paintings in orientalistic genre". If you want, you can ask bot to remove all this to category "orientalistic paintings from France".--Shakko (talk) 08:20, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think these categories are used both ways, which is a big problem. Category:Ancient Egyptian statues in the United States clearly isn't using "in" to talk about provenance. Somehow we need to split all of these out to "of" or "from" categories for provenance/origin of a work, and "in" for present location only. Any thoughts on how we can make this happen? I don't yet have any experience on Commons with discussing category renames/mergers; I'm typically a Wikipedia boy. Postdlf (talk) 16:20, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

French orientalistic paintings $) I think will be ok. I also do not know, maybe find some admin and ask for bot renaming. --Shakko (talk) 16:59, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Problem with Template:Creator? edit

no, it just problem with automatic categorysation using this template. Hi Shakko. Do you mind if I rename Category:Coins of Zeus into Category:Zeus on coins? Belisarios edit

Hello! How do you known that this picture shows Belisarios? Nothing indicates that, as far as I can see.   Jonathan Groß   17:32, 25 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can't be sure now, it was in December, as I see. It seems to me, it was some wiki article with rare language and not about Belisarios himself. Can't find it now. But now I've found another one page with same information[7]. It is an article about him in Soviet military encyclopaedia (Moscow, 1980) with same fragment of mosaic. I belive it was/is some old classical tradition of indentification. That book has quite good reputation (soviet history books never had any WP:ORIG :) about ancient history - only about communism) --Shakko (talk) 21:20, 25 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure about this: soviet history books never had any WP:ORIG :) about ancient history. Because in the GDR, ancient history was instrumentalised to serve the Marxism-Leninism (slavery -> history of labour movement). But as long as you add your source (the encyclopedia from 1980) to the image description it's OK with me. Yours,   Jonathan Groß   07:47, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
no-no, the ancient history was most acceptable! The real ideological madness begins with christianity and capitalism. This is why all soviet historians and art-historians of sound mind studied antiquity or Renaissance - chains were lesser ^) I meant - ORIG in facts - flesh of hipotesis could be very crazy, but state encyclopaedias feel it's duty to have cheked skeleton of facts. --Shakko (talk) 08:07, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Morosow edit

Hi Shakko, an exhibition (1930) in Berlin of modern Russian art File:Bundesarchiv Bild 102-10077, Berlin, Ausstellung moderner russischer Kunst.jpg shows a bust of ???? I belive it is Mikhail Kalinin. With author is harder, Morozov is quite common russian surname (it means Frozen ;). No famous sculptors of this surname, I've added in description some. --Shakko (talk) 13:28, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shakko, you have moved it to Karl Sievers, but he has still the categories of the other Category:Jacob Johann Sievers. can't catch your idea, what you want me to do? Find his another portraits? or add something? --Shakko (talk) 15:29, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi Shakko, something is still wrong, I guess. Is there any proof, that the painting in ru:Сиверс, Карл Ефимович depicts Karl Efimovich? Why not Jakov Efimovich according to http://www.abcgallery.com/R/rossika/prennerbio.html#Sievers . Look at the different birth dates. But it is too hard for me without the Russian language. So it might be better to delete the Category: Karl Sievers. Regards Mutter Erde 79.194.88.148 16:20, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Look. Olga's gallery (abcgallery.com) - is not official site. It calls him Jacov. Official site of Hermitage museum calls him Karl. (Here is the page in english[8]). So, he can be Jacov or Karl, but official site of Hermitage museum that goes from museum catalogs is more and more reliable source than abcgallery.com. Let him be Karl, with note, that there is another opinion. --Shakko (talk) 19:39, 12 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Postnikow edit

Hi Shakko, wp.de names Grigori Postnikow (1914–1978) as the sculptor of Category:Stalin-Denkmal, Karl-Marx-Allee (Berlin), but it's a redlink and not proved by native Russian speakers. How you would transcribe him in English? Is there an article about him in wp.ru? Regards Mutter Erde 92.226.253.86 09:32, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

He is Grigoriy Nikolaevich Postnikov. I've made a stub in ru-wiki for you - ru:Постников, Григорий Николаевич. --Shakko (talk) 10:23, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Wow, you are quick :-). Thank you. There's is a small second problem in de:Stalindenkmal (Berlin), because one good source names Postnikov as the sculptor, but 2 others name Tomski or S. D. Merkurow aka Category:Sergey Merkurov. What do you and Russian sources think? Regards 92.226.253.86 11:16, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I can't find any information about authors of this sculpture, not for Postnikov, not for others two. But doubts about the Postnikov's authorship are quite justified: in 1951 he was unknown (they took him in USSR's scultptors' trade union only in 1952), and unlikely they give him so great commission as leader's monument in the other country capital: in 1967 there was a little "war" about giving him commission to make Yuri Gagarin's (!!! not even Stalin's or Khrushev's) portrait, 'cos he is "too unknown". Also no more "stalins" in his heritage, as opposed to Tomsky & Merkurov, who have a lot of it. All Postnikov's works are about cosmos, Gagarin, sputnik, etc.--Shakko (talk) 11:47, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
According to the de-aricle this statue was only a gift of Komsomol for Category:3rd World Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin, so it might have been not too expensive. The German communists placed it in the new built Stalinallee. I guess, Komsomol have comissioned the unknown (and cheap) Postnikov to copy a Merkurov statue.
I will add Postnikov with a note "disputed", so you or any other user can revert it, OK? :-). Thanks for all. Regards Mutter Erde 92.230.83.196 14:58, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

(Александр Георгиевич Котиков) Alexander Georgievich Kotikov - is your Berliner person. By the way, his daughter Svetlana Kotikova became an actress, and before it, as a child, she was sitting for German girl's image in this your statue - de:Sowjetisches Ehrenmal (Treptower Park). "Kotikov" isn't popular surname, kotik means die Bärenrobbe or Kätzchen (surname "Kotov" from Kater is much more popular and there would be problems). Concerning Postnikov: When there is no Russian source for Postnikov's autorship of the Stalin statue, then it has to be corrected. Shit happens.

Burning Bush icons edit

Dear Shakko:

I noticed that you removed the category: Burning bush icons from several icons of the Burning Bush. I was wondering why you did that. The title of these icons is, in fact, "Burning Bush", so it naturally makes sense to place them in that category. I am interested in your reasoning on this. Than you very much. Dear Shakko:

Thank you, that was really interesting for me to read the stories of these people, which before were hidden behind the mysterious cyrrilic file names and descriptions.
In Berlin there is a cemetery Friedhof Grunewald-Forst, until 1927 only for suiciders, in which 5 Russian soldiers/immigrants are also interred, who together committed suicide after they have heard, that the Czar and his family has been killed. They have these orthodox wood crosses with Russian inscriptions, and I was wondering, who they were. Perhaps their stories are nothing really special, but if you find someday a note about them, please give me a link. I wil use your link as above :-). Thanks and good night. Mutter Erde 78.55.165.171 22:46, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
do we have a photo of this crosses? I need names, not enough info for find something.--Shakko (talk) 22:55, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Shakko, I have to admit a little error. The story goes in fact, that these 5 were so disappointed, that the Bolshewiks have won (the Czar was killed one year later!). I have uploaded one cross here http://i46.tinypic.com/35lf24k.jpg , dated March 16, 1917. Another name I could transcribe by myself is Pavel Taracenko/Tarasenko. Somebody takes care for them, because the wooden crosses are renewed. Regards Mutter Erde 78.55.22.168 10:41, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
He's name is Матвей Логвиненко (Matvey Logvinenko) and looks like the inscription was made by somebody who doesn't know Russian letters. But here is problem with date - 16. III. 1917. No sign of Bolsheviks yet, only de:Februarrevolution 1917 had just passed. I belive they did it 'cos 15. III. 1917 - is the date of emperor Nikolay II's abdication. Also they can't be emigrants - that movement begin an masse only after Civil War. Maybe they were captives that your people had taken from my people during WW1 :) Sad there is no sign of their rank - soldiers or officers? TarasenKO and LogvinenKO are both not aristokratic but simply Ukranian or cossack surnames. In Russian web I can't find information. --Shakko (talk) 11:05, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, they seem to be prisoners of war. But they are interred in this secret cemetery, although the orthodox Russian community of Berlin has its own cemetery Category:Friedhof der Russisch-Orthodoxen Gemeinde Berlin-Tegel, including en:Vladimir Dmitrievich Nabokov. I guess the reason is, that the Russian church (as the German churches) have their special problems with suiciders. Thanks for your help. Regards Mutter Erde 78.55.22.168 11:49, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Of course, it have the prohibition. So, what I think - if they were officers or aristocratic people, could be some notes in memoirs about their suicide. But if they are simply cossack - nobody could write about them... so I can't find. I'll ask some people more. --Shakko (talk) 11:54, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've asked here http://community.livejournal.com/warhistory/1855693.html - it reads 3700 boys/men who likes military history. Maybe it will work. If you have another photos you can add there in comments.--Shakko (talk) 12:09, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wow, that's great :-). But a detail is unclear: When only the last both were suiciders, why the first three are not interred together with all the other prisoners of war in the orthodox cemetery? Also: Who pays for the graves and the crosses and keeps their memory?
Although their names are now clear, I have uploaded the last of them http://i45.tinypic.com/vpktb4.jpg - as an example for his en:Homesickness. (btw: no ru-article about Homesickness, Heimweh?

This translates: Between 1917 and 1919 5 Russians, which has been escaped because of Oktoberrevolution, committed suicide in the Havel (=river). Allegedly they were (extremely) sad because of the death of the Czar) The same (Carl-Peter) Steinmann as above has told this to a journalist, while walking through this cemetery. Regards Mutter Erde 78.55.62.165 01:06, 22 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • I think he said it while walking as a bright story good for telling. Or he may think it then and had discovered the truth only some time later. The dates are quite straight - only in 1918 the victory of Bolsheviks become clear, so it is a legend about 5 suicide that grow up from true about 2. Your question about "detail is unclear" seems quite right for me, but I can't answer. And who is Nico? --Shakko (talk) 17:18, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Old Testament saints edit

Hi, Shakko. Thank you for your note on my talk page. However, I must take issue with your premise that Old Testament figures are not Christian saints. In the Orthodox Church the righteous from the Old Testament are indeed considered to be saints in exactly the same sense as any holy person born after the Death and Resurrection of Christ. The Orthodox teach that, ever since the Harrowing of Hell (when Christ descended into Hades after his Crucifixion and prior to his Resurrection) the righteous of the Old Testament were released and allowed to enter into heaven, where they enjoy the same level of blessedness as any other saint. So, in the context of an Orthodox iconostasis, icons of the forefathers Adam and Issachar (Праотец Адам. Праотец Иссахар) are indeed icons of saints. MishaPan (talk) 23:06, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

formally you're right, in orthodoxy list of saints classes includes prophets, patriarchs and theopatores (by the way en:List of Eastern Orthodox saint titles is incomplete...). But we never talk about saint Solomon or saint Moses, they are for mind in separate subcategory. I thought is better not to mix them, 'cos I create alphabet saints' categories for innumerable Christian saints. But if you wants to - no problem. --Shakko (talk) 23:25, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Purple Pictures? edit

Hi,

I was looking at some of the beautiful pictures you uploaded by the artist Borovikovsky, and several of them looked ok on the main screen, but then had a rather bright violet tone on full resolution. This was true for Jelena Pavlovna and Marie Pavlovna in the identical blue and peach outfits respectively and perhaps another can't recall. I don't think my computer is creative enough to produce that on its own, and I don't have them 'selected' as one can do and turn pages/pictures blue.

Just FYI, to check out in case you don't have anything else to do.

Knyaz is a nobility title that can be equivalent to prince or duke as the article says, I took it from the article. It is not only for Georgians. If you want to remove the duke it is ok with me. maybe is better to remove it from the English Wikipedia article. I also think that category:Graf can be also be nice category. The commons is not Wikipedia, making categories that define the person or the picture is welcome. You have categories like Category:Women facing right, Category:Red Bull Salzburg v. SK Sturm Graz (20100513) ect. They also can be considerd as strange but no. They are ok for cataloging and categoriesing of pictures.Geagea (talk) 21:40, 17 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

sixtus edit

I don't know any of such frescos, sorry... it must be interesting.. does it says where?? --Sailko (talk) 13:19, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

The only fresco about sixtus coming to my mind is the one in his category, by Melozzo. we should check the dates, but I would imagine the fresco with those kings set out by the Turks: the byzantine emperor, the despot of Morea, and those countries in the Balcans, like the ungarian (?), the serbian, the bulgars and maybe Skandenberg from Albania.. it could also be the Vojvodina (Romania) duke, but again, we should check at the times of sixtus what the Turka had already conquered and what not... hope it helps.. --Sailko (talk) 19:26, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Self portraits edit

Hi Shakko,

Hope you don't mind, but I added the sortkeys back because otherwise the subcategories aren't easily visible at Category:Self-portraits. (It's not a problem for Category:Not a self-portrait, but for the other ones). I'm not entirely convinced of the usefulness of all these "by" categories as they make it harder to sort the images at Category:Self-portraits (additional step for HotCat). We might want to review later, if it's worth keeping that. I'd have preferred if we had discussed this before re-organizing it.  Docu  at 00:17, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

<moved talk from User talk:Docu>

But there is already so comfortable template "category tree all" that makes all the subcats visible on the first page? By the way, I've made the new one Category:Self-portraits with wife - please, be my guest to adding pictures to it :) Shakko (talk) 05:19, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

</moved>

You need to click on that first to make anything visible. The "by" category also make it harder to move things from the main category to subcategory. They can help people thinking about the same image from various aspects though.
BTW, I like Category:Self-portraits with wife. Good idea!  Docu  at 19:03, 7 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Category:Knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit edit

Hello, I saw your move of a file from Category:Order of the Holy Spirit to Category:Knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit. The first category concerns pictures wich show that order, the second category concerns persons having that order. As pictures are in the persons category, it is eventually the persons category which gets Category:Knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit and many users will spontaneously transfer Category:Knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit from the individual images to the persons category, changing Category:Knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit from a series of pictures into a series of categories. Just asking: Is that what you have forseen in making that move? --Havang(nl) (talk) 19:43, 7 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think you are somewhat overcategorizing these paintings. In particular, I don't think "Paintings by name" is a useful category. Paintings of the Birth of Mary edit

Hi Shakko, I've reverted a number of edits you have made concerning the Category:Paintings of birth of Mary. Renaissance does, roughly, start in 1500, thus any painting painted before (especially paintings like this) do not belong into the Category:Renaissance paintings of Birth of Mary.

В результате мы тут имеем например, категории landscapes OF russia, landscapes FROM russia, landscapes IN Russia.

Leningradartist (talk) 12:08, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Leningradartist (talk) 18:24, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Niebelung genealogy.jpg edit

Fuseau (talk) 09:31, 31 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Gundomar). Hello, I've undone your edition there, but I'm not sure if I am correct. Why have you added it to the Coats of arms of the House of Medici? Is this truly a coat of arms of that house, in the most precise sense of the word (not something that emanated from that house, as that is lready covered in the marshalling)?-- Darwin Ahoy! 19:57, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

sorry, i didn't notice that one. --Shakko (talk) 19:59, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I often get confused with those "Coats of arms of the House of X" because people tend to put there every coat of arms of a descendant of the house, especially with marshalling. I believe that only the coats of arms of representatives of the house (the eldest branch, usually, and only one in a given time, the head of the house) should be located there. As finding this implies extensive research work, I'm not doing it for now, but possibly other people are. that's why I asked you. Cheers, -- Darwin Ahoy! 20:06, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
this is one uploaded by my today File:Coat of arms of the Medici (pietre dure).jpg. It is ok categorized? --Shakko (talk) 20:08, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for showing me that one, that category Category:pietre dure is something I was looking for, as I have here many pictures of a church with that artwork, but didn't knew what was the name of the technique. I've added some more categories to that coat of arms which will allow for a better categorization in the future.-- Darwin Ahoy! 20:19, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
ok :) but please separate interior pietre dure (floor or wall) from objects (table, etc.) 'cos 1st of all it is tecniq for small pieces. I think it will be good to create the category for interior finishing with pietre dure. --Shakko (talk) 20:22, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I believe I would have both things, though in the church it's mostly in the walls (and it's truly a beautiful artwork). When I upload those images I'll contact you to ask your opinion.-- Darwin Ahoy! 20:25, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please don't upload over existing images edit

Hi, I noticed you uploaded a new version of File:Italienischer Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts 001.jpg in 2009. However, Commons strongly discourages uploading one version of an image over another, unless they have exactly the same appearance. Moreover, although you may prefer your version of the image, I consider it to be lower-quality than the Yorck image. As such, if you want to use it, please upload it under a different filename. If you must upload over an existing file, you should update the "Source" field to indicate where you got it from. There is also now File:Charles Mellin (attributed) - Portrait of a Gentleman - Google Art Project.jpg, which I believe is superiour in quality to both. Thanks! Category:Models of buildings in Russia. NVO (talk) 09:54, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Shakko (talk) 09:58, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
(Don't tell a model maker that models are not creative). User:NVO/Wikihistory of scale models. NVO (talk) 10:06, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
т.е. Shakko (talk) 10:09, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
NVO (talk) 12:56, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

«С предстоящими» я бы перевёл как «with attendants», «with intercessors». --Thorvaldsson (talk) 12:41, 8 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Я заметил, что в переводах «с предстоящим/и» часто опускается, как в «с предстоящим преподобным Сергием Радонежским»: «enthroned, [] with»; [11] переведено как «with the praying». --Thorvaldsson (talk) 13:19, 8 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Upload of paintings edit

Hi Shakko. Thank you very much for all your uploads of wonderful paintings of art of the world. Please, don't forget that a painting is not only from a painter, but has a location too (museum, collection, etc.), and has a subject too (Madonna, Saint, monument, landscape, city, etc.). It's important that you give all these categories to a file that you have uploaded, different way, these wonderfull paintings in practice are not to see. Actually I am working to order all the paintings of the Category:National Museum of Capodimonte (Naples), and often I find situations like this, where you give only the painter category, and then the location (Museum) only in the description, and not as category too. I will be very greatfull to you, if you will give the museum category to the paintings that you will upload. For the Museum of Capodimonte, it's not necessary that you give the specific collection category, you just need to give the generic category, and later I will give the correct sub-cat. Thank you very much for your help. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 09:29, 12 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

ok. Pardon that I give you work in addition, I hate it by myself too... But when I do the massive upload sometimes it takes so much time to understand what exactly museum is mention. When I have Russian translated name of foreign museum - oh, it's time to cry. For Italian museums situation is better, but I think maybe we should have here redirect of every museum with local and English name (Museo del Prado => Prado Museum, like this). Prepositions are killing me. --Shakko (talk) 09:35, 12 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sometimes I have the same problems like you. So, when I identify the english name, which is a lot different from the name that I know, I realize the redirect cat. I do it for the different names of the artist too. But usually, it's not difficult to find the correct museum name. If you search "Prado" or "Capodimonte" they are done then in the correct form. Different way you can search the city name (in this case Madrid, or Naples), and then you open the category "Museums in CityName". You need only few seconds or minutes to find the correct name! Have a nice day ! --DenghiùComm (talk) 11:45, 12 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Kremlin Armoury edit

Hi Shakko. Sorry to bother you, but I stumbled upon this picture recently and in my opinion it shows striking similarity to this one, which is credited in Yuri Miller: Russian Arms and Armour (Aurora Art Publishers, Leningrad 1982. Plate 15) to some Vladimir Stukalov. Furthermore, the series to which it belongs contains 57 pictures taken on August 12, 2009, between 13:48 and 14:04 and - if the pictures were taken at the Armoury - in different halls & floors. This seems highly unlikely to me, assuming there were no exhibitions abroad at the time with easier access to the exhibits. Or am I too suspicious here? --Oberlaender (talk) 05:01, 17 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

When can I expect an answer from you? --Oberlaender (talk) 23:15, 17 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Armoury has only 1 floor (2nd is - w:Diamond Fund), one easy-to-use suite of rooms, and never has temporary exhbitions at all, only the permanent exposition, which is quite easier to access every day exept Thursdays at the price of 200 roubles. As you can see at my next photo set, same place, 2011: 1, 2, 3, 4 - it was taken in different rooms during only 5 minutes. But for tranquillity of your soul (and mine, as I consider 2009 set quite negligent and poor, and was planned it long before) I promise with the lapse of time to substitute current photos for new ones, that I will do in my next visit to Armoury with my newest and beautiful super-cam. The cataloging of Moscow museums (see Pushkin, Historical) is one of my favorite quests. Sorry that my affection for encyclopaedic data took your time for search, I hope you share that encyclopaedic passion too and enjoy it. Shakko (talk) 07:40, 18 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well, I wish you all the best with this project and I'm sure Wikipedia will get great benefit out of it. Even so, you should consider thinking again about the circumstances which led to the 2009 Armoury series. Maybe you will come to the conclusion that there was a misunderstanding which can be solved easily with the appropriate applications Commons offers. --Oberlaender (talk) 12:45, 18 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

I almost finished to upload my pictures from the travel in Russia.. and I am pleased I sometimes shooted things not yet on commons. For instance at the Hermitage I was the first to upload pictures of the glassware collections and, hard to believe, I was apparently the first commoneers to visit the Eurasian archaeology section.. an entire half floor of the museum never shooted before for commons! If I knew I had taken more and more pictures!! In Tsarskoe Selo I was the first to upload pictures of inside the pavillons of the garden. Nice find out! As regards the modern art I had some pictures of artists in Tretyakov and Russian Museum entered recently in PD, so we had almost nothing in Commons. In the Pushikin Museum you already did such a good job, and I improved some sections of archaeology.. I also revised the categorization of some part of the collections, basing myself on the Louvre scheme. Sooo a lot of job, but almost ended... I still have to upload the old masters at the Pushkin Museum ;) Thanks again for all your help and support!! Now you will find mine pictures too in the Russian categories :)) --Sailko (talk) 14:53, 22 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pushkin Museum edit

Hi Shakko. Thank you for all your wonderful pictures ! Now I have a little problem. In this picture on the left side in the background there is a standing female statue. I think that it's the same of this one. But I have difficult to identify it. She is said from Pompeii, in the Museum in Naples, but I don't find it. Perhaps there is a mistake. Can you help me? Do you know its name, provenance, Museum where she is to show, inventory number? Thank you very much for your help and informations ! Cheers, --DenghiùComm (talk) 07:59, 3 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shakko. Thank you very much for your help. The problems are these: 1) this statue is not exposed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN); this means that she can be in one of the storages, or that she is not of the MANN; 2) she is said to come from Pompeii, but not in which building or house she was found; often this means that this is a mistake and she was not found in Pompeii but elsewhere; 3) in the MANN we have a very rich pompeian collection, but it is the collection of the Bourbons, the kings of Naples; that means that after year 1860 (unification of Italy as nation) very few findings of Pompeii came to Naples: the new findings was all put in storage areas in the old or in the new city of Pompei; 4) since years we have work in progress in the MANN, now in an area, now in another, and often for these restoration works it's necessary to move completely whole sections (sometime a collection for visitors, sometime storages), that means that sometime it's very difficult too to access in a storage or to find an artifact; 5) it happens that often for very important and famous pieces you have all the pictures and repertories that you need, but for the other pieces it's very difficult to find a picture that can help you to identify an object or artwork. So, for all these reasons, I have very difficult to identify some pieces, and it is paradoxical that sometime it's easyer to identify an artwork when it is abroad in an exposition, than when it is "at home" in a storage. So I will be very greatfull to you for each information that you can give me about that very nice female statue. Thank you so much ! Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 16:22, 3 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi Shakko. Thank you very very much !!! I suppose that the mistake comes from the type called "little Herculanese". I will research more informations about this statue. Again 1000 Thanks ! Cheers, --DenghiùComm (talk) 20:07, 26 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

--Shakko (talk) 19:48, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Shakko (talk) 09:41, 16 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

About the portrait edit

Hello, Shakko, how are you? I still have the catalogue of the museum where the image was scanned from, but I'm afraid it doesn't provide enough information about the sitter. The catalogue has a quite informative note about the painter, but providse little information about the painting itself. It says: "Influenced by Realism and Impressionist style, Maliavine executed this portrait with apparent confidence and quickness. The composition is simple and stripped of decorative arrangements, being focused in the physiognomy of the model, positioned with evident comfort and naturalness. According to V. A. Lenyaishin, director of the Russian Museum of Leningrad, the painting is very representative of the typical portrait production of Maliavine in his artistic maturity.". According to the catalogue, the painting was donated to the museum by an anonymous collector of Rio de Janeiro in 1972. It is listed under the inventory number 1.974 P and dated of 1926. But there's no mention about who was the sitter. The catalogue is quite old (1985), so I sent an e-mail to the curatorial department of the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes asking if they have informations about the sitter. If I get an answer, I'll share it with you, ok? Greetings from São Paulo. Dornicke (talk) 00:00, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category:Saint Faith edit

Saint Faith lived in Agen, France (Gaul) and died ca. 300 A.D., while "Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia" lived in Rome and died more than a century earlier. Some down the centuries have confused Faith of Aquitaine and Faith of Rome, but I don't think we want to do so. AnonMoos (talk) 12:47, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

So we should separate it, naming her Saint Faith of France and keep simply Saint Faith as page of disambig, maybe? 'Cos also exist personification of virtue Faith, and she also is saint. --Shakko (talk) 12:52, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
The majority of images in the category now are about Faith of Agen. Not sure why there has to be a separate category about Faith of Rome, since she almost always appears as part of a trio. AnonMoos (talk) 13:19, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

--Kaganer (talk) 23:09, 4 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category:Objects in Moscow State Historical Museum edit

Hello,

I have seen that you have uploaded a lot a pictures in Category:Objects in Moscow State Historical Museum, so maybe you can help me. I have uploaded ~50 photos on this category (the ones with a "Moscow State Historical Museum - IMG 3XXX.JPG" name), but I can't identify and/or categorize them. I have already checked the museum website, but it's not very usefull. I can't speak Russian either, so there is nothing more I can do by myself.

I don't know if you can identify some of them by yourself, but maybe you can ask on the Russian Wikipedia if some specialist can do it. I can't speak Russian, so I can't find and/or ask the place where to do it.

Thanks, and sorry for the trouble, --XIIIfromTOKYO (talk) 14:03, 12 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category:Old Testament Trinity edit

Hi Shakko, please can you check, this should not be subcat to Category:Abraham and three angels??Greetings--Oursana (talk) 17:44, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Category probably should have been given a less emphatic name... AnonMoos (talk) 07:26, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I can't be sure about the accuracy of term. All I know, that in Orthodox church the three angels visiting the Abraham is the personification of Trinity and it is calling "The Old Testament Trinity" (ru: Троица Ветхозаветная). Is it the same for Catholic and Protestant Church? If is not, the category should be cleaning to keep only the Orthodox images (icons and frescoes) and removing "realistig" Western art. Shakko (talk) 12:56, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Probably "Category:Trinitarian iconography of Old Testament themes" would be a better name for a general category, and "Category:Orthodox icons of Abraham and the three angels" if you want a very narrow category. Some might object to "Old Testament Trinity" because there's no Trinity in the Old Testament according to the theology of their religious group. AnonMoos (talk) 17:52, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
"Old Testament Trinity icon" (ru: Троица Ветхозаветная) is the official term for icons depicting 3 angels and Abe, e.g see Rublev's icon. To call it "Orthodox icons of Abraham and the three angels" will be same mistake as call "Nativity" - "The delivery of child Jesus by woman named Mary" :). So maybe better to keep it. And if you feel sure about Western European art and term - do as you wish, I keep an eye only on Orthodox icons, basing on my education. --Shakko (talk) 18:02, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

RE: Icons by century edit

I'm sorry, but being Orthodox, icon is not just wooden paintings, but includes mosaics, frescoes etc... It includes everything back to the early days even in the catacombs. This isn't just our definition here in "American Orthodoxy", but is also the definition you'll find in Greece, where icons are also considered more than just iconography painted on wood, and includes anything in mosaic form, frescoes, cloth etc...

Refer to OrthodoxWiki:

http://orthodoxwiki.org/Icon

"Iconography (from Greek: εικoνογραφία) refers to the making and liturgical use of icons, pictorial representations of Biblical scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, historical events in the life of the Church, and portraits of the saints. Icons are usually two-dimensional images and may be made of paint, mosaic, embroidery, weaving, carving, engraving, or other methods. A person who practices the art of iconography is called an iconographer."

Also refer to Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icon

"Icons may also be cast in metal, carved in stone, embroidered on cloth, painted on wood, done in mosaic or fresco work, printed on paper or metal, etc."

According to our definitions here in America, and with the English language, Icon refers to anything done to represent Orthodox religious figures and can be in almost any media. It may be a traditional icon on wood painted with egg tempera, or it might be something printed off a professional printer and laminated, or it might be something painted on pottery or clay, or it may be a mosaic, or it may be a fresco.

So therefore, I will not stop uploading frescoes and mosaics to that category, because according to our official definitions in the Orthodox Church, frescoes and mosaics are icons as well as those painted on wood.

Please, do not revert any of my edits in the future regarding this topic. You just reverted hours and hours of my work yesterday, and wasted it all, and I would appreciate avoiding this in the future. --OrthoArchitectDU (talk) 16:39, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you about most of your points and understand the tree of categories. However, I will suggest that Orthodox frescoes & Orthodox mosaics be under the icons categories, because as I've pointed out, they are icons according to the definition, at least as it appears on Wikipedia (which Wikimedia is associated with). But then again, there are some Orthodox mosaics (like floor mosaics) that aren't icons, so it's hard to decide where to put it. Maybe putting it under Orthodox art is best. Even though frescoes & mosaics are all regarded as icons, they aren't generally kissed and venerated actively like others, even though they receive the same respect.

Is it also possible to change the a category name like Category:13th-century icons into Category:13th-century Orthodox icons, to make it consistent with it's sub-categories? That would also make sure it stays distinct.

I caught my error with the whole Russian icons categories, and tried to fix what I could, to change them to Kievan Rus, but I'm afraid I didn't find them all. That was my mistake once I noticed why it was organized that way.

I strongly disagree with the statement that we can't refer to "Orthodoxy" prior to 1054, and I cannot and will not agree to that. It is appropriate to fit pre-1054 items into Orthodox categories, as well as Roman Catholic categories where they overlap. As an example, the mosaics within the ancient churches of Ravenna should be under both the Catholic mosaics category, and the Orthodox mosaics category.

To have them just under "Christian mosaics" is wrong because Christianity includes not just Orthodox & Roman Catholic, but also Protestants and other groups. It becomes confusing, especially for people. It also makes it look like Orthodoxy is just a denomination that was founded in the 11th Century, and that is absolutely not true.

That whole interpretation of referring only to Orthodoxy after 1054 smells terribly of Ecumenist heresy. It acts like we never existed prior to 1054. The simple fact is that we did, and the Church of Rome was part of us. We can claim everything they had prior to 1054 and they can claim everything we had prior to 1054. Besides which, that rule has already been broken because most Orthodox categories have 10th Century categories, which is 901-1000 CE.

--OrthoArchitectDU (talk) 20:13, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I wasn't really forming my own definition, but going by how it is defined on the Wikipedia article. But nevertheless.

How about, for all Christian art, use Category:Christian art

Then, from 1st to 3rd Century (33-300 CE), we have everything in the Paleo-Christian category here: Category:Paleochristian art

Then, for everything from the 4th Century on (301 CE-Present), we add two more categories, Category:Eastern Christian art and Category: Western Christian art.

Within these, have Catholic art & Orthodox art. Within those sections, have a note linking to the other category, clarifying that art from the other tradition prior to 1054/1204 may also be claimed by both groups.

However, allow pre-11th Century Orthodox and Catholic art in those sections, as long as they are respective to their jurisdiction at the time, so pre-schism Orthodox art has to be of the Four Eastern Pentarchs. This will allow work such as Hagia Sophia to be included in the Orthodox section.

Just as a last, minor note, as far as I know from my research, Ravenna was mostly orthodox, it was just the Arian Baptistery and Arian Cathedral (currently Spirito Santo) that were Arian, the other churches, Galla Placidia, San Vitale, San Giovanni Battista, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Sant'Apollinare in Classe, San Francesco, San Giovanni Evangelista etc... were all orthodox. --OrthoArchitectDU (talk) 21:17, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Why don't we change "icons" to "iconography" in order to differentiate it from "icons" as used in modern terminology? --OrthoArchitectDU (talk) 21:24, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Would you consider adding these images to Category:Images from the Royal Collection of the United Kingdom as well as the other RC subcategories? This indicates that the itself image came from the RC website (as opposed to a photograph taken by a tourist, for example, or scanned from a book). Also, are you familiar with the {{Creator}} and {{Artwork}} templates? There is also {{Photograph}}, which you might find useful. Let me know if I can help you with any of these. Laura1822 (talk) 21:22, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I was just looking at your list of collection of errors of portrait models. I like these sorts of puzzles too. I have come across several of these kinds of mistakes and corrected them. Is your page for Russian only or can I add my finds too? Or is there another page in English, or should I make my own? Laura1822 (talk) 21:43, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Let's do the international one? If you'll help me with my English mistakes, I can translate my collection from Russian. --Shakko (talk) 21:47, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

File:Lampi Catherine II of Russia.jpg -> Catherine II of Russia by J.B.Lampi (c.1791, Palace on the Water) edit

Could you please give rationale for the name change? It is the only change that you have made without apparent reason, what was wrong with previous name? Vert (talk) 18:39, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

The reason of renaming: in Category:Catherine II by Lampi we have more than dozen portraits of same iconography of same person (Catherine) by same painter (Lampi). Renamed adding the date and museum to mark the difference. Please note format "name+author+date+museum" is much better for filenaming at Commons than simply "name+author". By the way, in version "Lampi Catherine II of Russia" nobody can guess what means "Lampi" (he's not Raphael or Rubens). Even the version "Catherine II of Russia by Lampi" is better. --Shakko (talk) 18:49, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Discussion should be in one place. The difference is reflected in file description, if someone can't guess what means "Lampi" he/she can refer therein. There is no need for file name to provide full description. Vert (talk) 19:02, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
as you can see in Category:Catherine II by Lampi we have more than dozen portraits of same iconography of same person (Catherine) by same painter (Lampi). Renamed adding the date and museum to mark the difference. Do you have any other methods or we should rename them all to "Lampi Catherine II of Russia 01", "Lampi Catherine II of Russia 02", "Lampi Catherine II of Russia 03". It will be better, ah?
Using the preposition "by" shows the respect to other users, even using hyphen ("Lampi - Catherine II of Russia") is better than in previous version. --Shakko (talk) 19:26, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Respect? so maybe you should ask the file uploader whether your modifications are adequate? I strongly don't think so!!! Vert (talk) 21:50, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry to upset you, this is such a small thing, isn't it? This is first time for my 7 years at Commons with such problem from another user. It is according to the rule of project en:Wikipedia:Be bold. There is another rule - en:Wikipedia:Ownership of articles. Nobody ever asked the permission to rename files here, you don't own them here, remember? I didn't vandalize it. I didn't even photoshoped it - as I did with another Lampi's "Catherine". It is free lisense here, you know. Do whatever you wants if it will make things better. The author will be asked only when file is nominated to deletion. Once again I'm sorry. --Shakko (talk) 22:19, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
ha, you're even aren't the uploader of of it. Am I the telepat? Should I ask every editor of a file? --Shakko (talk) 22:19, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Category: Why? edit

Why new category of Infantes and Infantas of Spain? --Parair (talk) 00:31, 6 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

York Art Gallery paintings edit

Hi Shakko, I notice that you've been uploading quite a few paintings from the ArtFund website, including some in the York Art Gallery. I just thought you might like to know that York Museums Trust has an online collection which has much higher quality versions of most of the Public Domain paintings and lots of information. I hope you find it useful, please use the template: {{YMT Online Collections}} to help the trust track their images. Also, get in touch if there are any other fine art resources in Yorkshire you might want help with. I'm coordinating the GLAMwiki Network Project here and am keen to help! Category:Tobias and Sarrah edit

Hi Shakko, you have created the Category:Tobias and Sarrah a couple of years ago. As far as I know, Sar(r)ah is commonly written as Sarah with one r. You created the category with a double r in her name. Is this done with a reason or just a spelling error? Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 15:39, 10 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

no, you are right, second "r" was given in Bible only to Abraham's Sarah (as the gift), this one should be renamed. --Shakko (talk) 13:33, 11 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Fëdor Ivanovič Šaljapin edit

Посмотрите, пожалуйста, Category:Fillette au cerceau by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Dear Shakko, I ran into the image of Jean Bellegambe, the Blood of Christ tryptich that you posted, and I would really appreciate if you had the reference of where is this painting located. Please be more civil edit

Hi Shakko,

Handling the deletion requests from today I found some of your remarks towards the images about their uploaders insulting. here you state that the self-portrait you nominated is "ugly". Here you state "not pretty" about a selfie. And finally here you state that the image is a bad photoshop. You are correct in nominating those images, they are out of scope, this does however NOT allow for insulting of the uploaders. These kind of processes are already not very nice to uploaders as we delete their images as being irrelevant. Throwing an insult on top of that makes the process much more painful and does not help us in any way besides making Commons a hostile place. I urge you to express yourself more civil in future requests. A good way to do this is for example to keep the nominations factual, and for similar nominations you can use a similar general line with relevant links, this reasoning for example is nice and informative to users unfamiliar with Commons.

Portrait corrections project edit

I just made some corrections to the last five in the translated table, which apparently you did back in January. I apologize because when you posted on my talk page then, I checked the page and did not see the additions. I don't know why. I checked back a few times but did not see the changes. I thought you had changed your mind or gotten busy with something else. Then I was away from Commons for several months. I will help now though if you want to do a few more. Bots edit

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Category:Great_helmet edit

Great helmet has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Shakko (talk) 08:16, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

категории edit

Вот вы создаёте, к примеру, Category:Streets in Moscow Kremlin. Category:Streets and squares of Moscow? Вы создаёте Category:Exhibitions in Moscow (2015), и не кажется ли вам, что эта категория логически напрашивается не только в Exhibitions, но и в Category:2015 events in Moscow? --A.Savin 21:45, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

--Ghirlandajo (talk) 07:12, 5 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
--A.Savin 09:24, 5 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ghirlandajo (talk) 15:14, 5 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
--A.Savin 00:50, 6 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
--Shakko (talk) 12:16, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Всего наилучшего, мадам --A.Savin 13:21, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
--Shakko (talk) 13:33, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Category:Exhibitions in the Moscow State Historical museum - та же история. --Shakko (talk) 13:49, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
--A.Savin 14:46, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
:) --Shakko (talk) 14:53, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
--Shakko (talk) 17:28, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
--A.Savin 00:14, 8 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
не добавила "Automobile museums in Russia" в "Cars in Proviantskie Sklady museum" вообще-то потому, что она же уже стоит в надкатегории Category:Exhibitions in Proviantskie Sklady museum (вот, убираю кстати). --Shakko (talk) 05:38, 8 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

File:Graves in the Cathedral of the Assumption (Moscow) by shakko RU.jpg edit

--Dalka (talk) 19:40, 16 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

--Shakko (talk) 20:33, 16 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Template:Russian Empire by year edit

Сейчас там сделано так: категории из Russia by year - это подкатегории в Russian Empire by year.

you wants to keep one category for all 2800 painters? In that case better to create category "by name" --Shakko (talk) 14:23, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
This is not a problem. The alphabet system works but excellent. If you do not know the lifetime of a painter, finds him not so easy in the new categories. --Botaurus (talk) 14:32, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open! edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Shakko,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Hi my friend! The old poet could be Virgil, but how about the third one? Petrarch? But Petrarch should have the laurus crown as well...

Ghirlandaio edit

Hello my friend! How are you? Today in the newspaper I read about the presentaion of a book about Ghirlandaio family, from a recently discovered family manuscript found in Archivio segreto vaticano. The discovered the real birth date of Domenico, which is June 02nd, 1448. I modified on wikidata and in some main wikipedias. Can you try to modify in the Russian/Cyrillic wikipedias? Tomorrow I will have a weblink (in Italian). Let me know if you can do. Thank you!! --Sailko (talk) 17:27, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Frames in file uploads edit

Hello, please can you confirm whether or not you took the image of File:Vasily Tropinin 17 (frame).jpg? I don't see a framed version of this image on the source URL you cited, so as it seems you may have taken the photograph yourself, I've reverted my edits. If you can confirm it is your own photograph (which is implied by the license you have applied to the file) then this will avoid future misunderstandings.

--Stolbovsky (talk) 12:53, 11 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Category:Paintings by Vincent van Gogh by name Category:Paintings by painter by name.
--Stolbovsky (talk) 13:03, 11 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Commons Conference project edit

Hello Shakko,

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

--PereslavlFoto (talk) 11:53, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
--Shakko (talk) 09:17, 18 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
--PereslavlFoto (talk) 11:04, 18 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Concorso Wiki Loves Monuments Italia 2018 (English version)

Hermitage Museum edit

Hi Shakko

I see that you undertake to classify many photographs of the Hermitage Museum by room names or by a room numbers. It's a huge job, but very useful. Thanks!
Many of those photographs were just categorized under "interior of ..." because we did not know the exact room name or room number.

After having uploaded my own photographs of the Museum into Commons, trying to classify them as much of possible than I could (also and indicating the room number at the end of the the file name thanks to a map of rooms/floors/buildings I received at the beginning of the visit), I have created my own photo gallery in my personal page : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Poudou99/gallery-Musée-de-l%27Ermitage#Small_Hermitage

Maybe some of room names or rooms numbers I gave are wrong. Maybe my page could also help you to complete yours : https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Участник:Shakko/Картины#Зимний_дворец

Good continuation. Regards, --Poudou99 (talk) 14:00, 13 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Vaso de Fortuny in room Hermitage hall 259 - Romanov Gallery ? edit

Hi,

I saw that you have categorized on July 14th, 2019, the category:Vaso de Fortuny into Category:Hermitage hall 259 - Romanov Gallery.

I am wondering if this is not an error. The "Vaso de Fortuny" is a Hispano-Moresque vase (category:Alhambra vases), nothing related to the "Romanov Gallery" (room 259 ).
Also, in my notes, the photograph I took of this vase was taken in "Winter Palace - 3rd Level - Rooms 351 to 356 - Rooms 381 to 384", far from room 259.

Regards, --Poudou99 (talk) 23:15, 23 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sorry. Thanks to this maps (https://hermitagemuseum.org/wps/portal/hermitage/panorama/virtual_visit/panoramas-m-2/?lng=en); I better understand my own error.
It is a misunderstanding from my part between the historical name of the room ("Romanov Gallery") and what is currently on display ("European Middle Ages").
The big paintings whose photographs are shown in this category (Category:Hermitage hall 259 - Romanov Gallery), have misled me. Moves of objects and paintings have been made in recent years. Currently, this room does not contain large paintings any more but objects of the "European Middle Ages" (like the "Vaso de Fortuny ").
Sorry for having disturbing you with my remark. --Poudou99 (talk) 00:12, 24 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
