File:ThrushUpperWing.jpg textEdit

The image is very nice, but the text is so small as to be virtually illegible. Would you consider redoing the image with larger text? Thanks! KDS4444 (talk) 19:20, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

File:Pair mantodea Bangalore.jpgEdit

You are claiming to be the author of this (and several other) image on Commons for which you do not provide any EXIF data and have only a small image size. This makes me wonder if you yourself actually took the picture. If so, would you consider providing appropriate EXIF data and a larger image size? If not, would you care to explain your decision? If you are not the original author, then the image needs to have the correct author and source added or it will be at risk of being nominated for deletion. Thanks!! KDS4444 (talk) 19:25, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

EXIF is not a must on Commons. In my case, the lack of EXIF is due to the lack of a good CR2/RW2 raw to JPG converter. Shyamal (talk) 05:43, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Pictures from the British Library flickr collection.Edit

It looks like you've been finding some great images in the BL Flickr collection. Many thanks for taking the time to look through it, and for finding such good things!

One little request: when you're uploading such images, could you use the ingestion template described here, which sets up some appropriate image templates and categories).

You can see the effect on the description pages for c:Category:Mysore: a gazetteer compiled for Government. One advantage is that it puts the images in page-number order in the category (and also if they are used in another category, like c:Category:Maps of Mysore District.

It also re-writes the description pages to use an {{Artwork}} template, with a link back to the original image on Flickr, and with a facility also to add a link to the BL georeferenced version of the map, once it becomes available; and it adds a source category, to make it easy to find the descriptions of all images uploaded from the BL stream.

So if you could copy and use this script for your recent uploads from the BL collection, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks, Jheald (talk) 22:55, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Will try with future uploads. Shyamal (talk) 08:49, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Wrong license for File:Dictyopharidae WG.jpgEdit

Hi there! I certainly hope you haven't been dead for over 70 years: If you took the photo File:Dictyopharidae WG.jpg please update the license to a more appropriate one (e.g. CC or GFDL)). Cheers, and thanks for all you do! Animalparty (talk) 00:01, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Jacobin cuckoo or Red-whiskered bulbulEdit

File:Large Hawk-Cuckoo.jpgEdit

Is this a Large Hawk-Cuckoo, or this is Common Hawk-Cuckoo, too? Hunu (talk) 15:36, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

This is definitely a subadult H. sparverioides - note the black chin and the streaks on the breast. Shyamal (talk) 15:41, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you Shyamal! Species identification is a big problem in Wiki Commons. Did you discuss these wrong identified photos is some forum or just corrected? I am asking because I know some mistakes in mammal identification here and I don't know what to do. Hunu (talk) 08:21, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
I am familiar with both the species. Have been observing birds for 30 years now. Shyamal (talk) 10:42, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't doubt your knowledge. I was asking about procedure. For example, I am sure that File:Marmota sibirica - (Russia, Mongolia) - Rochers-de-Naye, Switzerland, 2009.JPG is not Marmota sibirica, but Marmota camtschatica. The Author weite me that she doesn't know the species, but it was written on the cage. Or File:Ochotona dauurica, Tariat sum, Arkhangai province, Mongolia.JPG is not Ochotona dauurica, but it is Ochotona alpina. And so on. Hunu (talk) 17:59, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
Editing the metadata is a simple step that does not require any process, especially if the author has no objection. You can also write some reasoning on the talk page and put in a {{rename}} tag on the image. You can also post on the village pump for administrative assistance. If you stick around long enough on Commons, you might be granted permission to rename files on your own (which is what I did). Shyamal (talk) 07:50, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
You see that my name is still red here, though I'm here for three years. It's may be because I did not upload my own photographs, mainly old pictures of members of first Russian parliament. So I will wait, let wrong marmots and wrong pikas be in Wiki. By the way, could you tell me what is additional species on the File:Common Hawk Cuckoo.ogg. Some partridge? Hunu (talk) 08:47, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
The others calls at the start are a couple of white-cheeked barbets ( Megalaima viridis ). I would strongly encourage you to fix the captions of the incorrect identifications if you are sure. We get the quality we deserve on systems like this. Shyamal (talk) 11:20, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
Hello! I have another question. This bird has black bill File:Cuculus varius India.jpg, but this one gas yellow bill File:Common Hawk Cuckoo I2 IMG 0801.jpg. What does it mean? Hunu (talk) 14:15, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
The one with yellow bill is a young bird. That matches very well with their host, the Turdoides babblers. See this for some pictures. Shyamal (talk) 04:00, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, Shyamal. So, is the one with black bill one year old? Hunu (talk) 10:39, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes mature adults show nice barring and they merge into a diffuse brown on the breast (almost like shikra Accipiter badius plumage changes with age) Shyamal (talk) 10:50, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Hi, Is it a red phase of female of Common hawk cuckoo? File:Common hawk cuckoo at Irpala Midnapur India.jpg. Hunu (talk) 08:29, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
There is no hepatic or red phase known in the common hawk cuckoo. The subadult plumage is more rufous and the throat and breast have streaks. Here is the description from Rasmussen & Anderton 2005 - "Subadult has paler brownish upperparts than immature Large[ie. sparverioides], with dull rufous bars, paler grey head, and narrow buff (not white) bars on tail; breast is streaked and belly marked with brown chevrons, bars or spots, less boldly than in immature Large." Shyamal (talk) 04:45, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for answer. Hunu (talk) 18:43, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Videoconvert from wmflabs is nice!Edit

I found this(https://tools.wmflabs.org/videoconvert) to be a nice tool for uploading videos. It does the conversion and upload into commons in a single pass. The only thing to check before you upload is to go to settings and ensure that license is latest and also ensure the file name is correct. I could upload the video that i showed today (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Technomyrmex_albipes_seen_carrying_a_bee.webm) Have a nice week ahead :) Forestowlet (talk) 11:51, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

Banded racer pictureEdit

Hi, I am new to Wikipedia editor , I don't know some rules of it , just I want to say is , is that your clicked picture of Banded racer , if yes then want to say that , ... that's not Banded racer ..that's a Himalayan keelback (Amphiesma platyceps). If possible, pls change it because many people study wrong information. @Vaishnav Khushal Vaishnav khushal (talk) 13:37, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

@Vaishnav khushal: - many thanks, will make the correction. I was going by someone else's identification, will check with some specialists. Shyamal (talk) 02:35, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Flycatcher Map not correctEdit

Bird books (e.g. 'Birds of East Asia' by Mark Brazil) say that Ficedula narcissina winters in Borneo (and maybe in Phillipines). Neither of these is in the 'wintering range' for this bird on this map, so the map isn't correct. In addition, the three species are said to have differing wintering ranges, so just one range is not adequate, either. Maybe it would be better to delete this map?

This was made mainly to illustrate F. zanthopyga - for the others only the breeding area was supposed to be indicated - the wintering area is for zanthopyga - maybe the caption needs correction. It is unfortunate that it is in use for F. narcissina articles. You can correct the map - that is the idea behind SVG format. Shyamal (talk) 06:43, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

File:PericrocotusFlammeus.svgEdit

Hi Shyamal - this pic is out of date, as Pericrocotus speciosus is now split off as a separate species. Could you split the top bird out to a new file, please? Can't do it myself as I don't have svg-editing ability on my computer. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 15:05, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

I had made this illustration to show the difference in colour and wingslash pattern. The caption correctly notes this. Shyamal (talk) 01:07, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
The caption notes it because I updated it :-) but the filename doesn't! Maybe renaming might be better? - MPF (talk) 00:36, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for making the notes, I have made it a bit clearer now I hope and have moved the file - feel free to rename it as you see fit. Shyamal (talk) 04:14, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Another svg edit :-)Edit

Hi Shyamal - File:SpanishSparrowMap.svg needs a small update; the birds in the western half of Turkey are P. h. hispaniolensis, with P. h. transcaspicus in Cyprus and eastern Turkey eastwards (ref.: Summers-Smith in HBW 14, 2009). Also Malta is missing on the map. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:11, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

@MPF: I have extended it east and have extended the hybrids from the heel of italy into Malta but I am not sure. Let me know if it needs further correction. A snapshot of the HBW map would be useful if further correction is needed. Shyamal (talk) 00:40, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks! I'll recheck against HBW later today - MPF (talk) 01:18, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
A bit more refining, please! Should include eastern Portugal, but not most of Catalonia. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 01:01, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
Please see if it is ok, I am keeping the borders rounded - it is essentially meant to be quite rough. Shyamal L. (talk) 03:16, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! I think it maybe goes a little bit further west in Portugal, but probably not worth doing another edit for it ;-) MPF (talk) 22:34, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Another ornithological questionEdit

Do you know how eggs of en:Emberiza stewarti look like? I'm asking because the File:Emberiza leucocephalos MHNT.ZOO.2010.11.219 Fergana Uzbekistan.jpg is probably wrong. There is no any sign that Emberiza leucocephalos could breed in Fergana (or Ferghana), Uzbekistan. So if the label is correct, species definition is wrong. I beleve that it could be en:Emberiza stewarti, it has English name the same as Emberiza leucocephalos in Russian. Hunu (talk) 11:11, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

@Hunu: - sincere apologies for the delay, I am not sure how I missed seeing and responding to your message earlier. I am not familiar with the regional status of the bird and my quick searches do not either rule out or confirm their breeding in Uzbekistan but that is because I am mainly looking at English language content on the web. I am afraid I do not know enough to tell whether this is right or if it is likely to be in error. Eggs of most buntings, I presume do look alike which leaves little that we can do. Shyamal (talk) 05:46, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for answer. May be you know ornithologists in English wiki better then I. And you could advise good person to direct this question. `Hunu (talk) 05:55, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
I think egg identification is now quite an extinct art, and little chance of finding anyone with the resources for this region on the En wikipedia - all serious identification from eggs these days is done with molecular methods. Shyamal (talk) 13:16, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Wikiprojects on commonsEdit

Hi Shyamal, wanted to check with you how Wikiproject works on Commons. If a user would like to get more and more of his biologist friends/colleagues to upload images on Commons, and if they'd like to do it systematically and in a collaborative way among themselves, is that logic enough to start off a Wikiproject? I ask because they may be interested in implementing it institution-wide so perhaps volume will be large and the people contributing may need a collaborative space to discuss the uploaded images. But, I see Wikiproject scene on commons is not as active as on English Wikipedia....or am I mistaken? Let me know what you think. Is there scope for example for Wikiprojects exclusively for getting images owned by people of a particular organisation onto Commons? Any other means perhaps? Prashanthns (talk) 10:15, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

On second thought, all of them just joining Commons:WikiProject Tree of Life by all of the individual uploader? That allows for more system-wide collaboration no? They can then have a user-category to pool their images though. Prashanthns (talk) 12:44, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
Depends on the nature of collaboration and medium of discussion. By and large Commons does not have much of a subject specific focus. The language wikis do better for subject focus. Shyamal L. (talk) 17:02, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

Identification HelpEdit

Question from RussiaEdit

Hello! We are not communicate for long time. Now I have a question not about ornithology but from my another field of interest, recent Russian History. I uploaded to files File:Letter Koteln Prisoner2.jpg and File:GULAG letter.jpg, this are letters from Gulag prisoners which were found recently in buildings which were build by prisoners. Form my point of view both of them obviously correspond to PD-trivial. But some gays would like to delete them. Do you where I could read information on Licence plate (PD-trivial, for example) and so on? Hunu (talk) 07:55, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

Greetings! I can see that this is a bit annoying but that really is the nature of Copyright law! I think the first can be argued under a presumptive public domain after 70 years after death of the author but the second seems tougher to defend. To top it all the law for "public domain" of works from the Soviet Union seem to have been much debated - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:PD-USSR - hope this helps but I usually tend not to care too much, a few files are always deleted now and then here like the bunch above due to silly Italian laws that even Italians would not defend! Do you still make distribution maps?Edit

Hi, I'm working on the article about the Grey-capped social weaver. I saw you made the distribution map that is in the article on the common stork (years ago). Perhaps you could be willing to create a distribution map for the Grey-capped social weaver. You could make use of the map on this page. Thank you in advance. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 10:38, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

I do but I am currently travelling. Give me a few days. Shyamal L. (talk) 04:39, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
@Dwergenpaartje: - please see if this works for you. File:Nigrita_arnaudi_map.svg Shyamal L. (talk) 07:09, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
This works for me. I've included it in the taxobox. Thank you so much! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 16:31, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Improved distribution map for Quelea quelea neededEdit

Red-billed Quelea

Thank you again for creating a distribution map for the grey-capped social weaver. I've recently nominated the article on the red-billed quelea as Good Article, see the review talk page. One of the suggested improvements is to include a source for the distribution map. However, the description says it is "own work". It seems to me rather imprecise, given the written descriptions of the distribution of this species. I am wondering if the overlay of two maps which are already on the web (HBW Alive and BBC) would not be more precise, and the result could then be sourced. If you agree, and are willing to give it a go, I would very much appreciate it. Kind regards, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 10:28, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Please see if this is an improvement - File:Red_billed_quelea_map.svg Shyamal L. (talk) 03:36, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
It certainly is! I've replaced the map by your improvement. Thanks you so much! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 21:38, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Distribution map for nelicourvi weaverEdit

Hi Shyamal. Thank you again for the nice distribution maps you made before. This time, I would like to ask you again for a favour. The Nelicourvi weaver article lacks a distribution map. Handbook of Birds of the World Alive provides a simple map, BirdLife International has another simple map. A real detailed map can be found in The Birds of Africa: Volume VIII: The Malagasy Region: Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros, Mascarenes - Volume 8 van The Birds of Africa, Roger Stafford on page 869 here. Could you again create something. Kind regards and thank you in advance! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 13:39, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

Hope this works for you File:Ploceus_nelicourvi_map.svg Shyamal L. (talk) 15:15, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

iNaturalist?Edit

Hi Shyamal :) I remember your many great pictures from when I was more active on Commons. I just saw your pictures of Formiscurra, and while the pictures are available to iNaturalist, you seem to never have uploaded your observations there. I was wondering why, as you do have an account there :)

Cheers! --Sarefo (talk) 18:16, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

Oh, too many of these sites and I am not even sure I know my login and password for these. I am glad they could at least make use of the contents on Commons! Shyamal L. (talk) 01:49, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

Distribution map for Felicia wantedEdit

Dear Shyamal, I am currently working on a large expansion of the wikipedia article Felicia (genus). There is no distribution map available on wiki commons, and I am hoping you would be able and willing to create one. You could make use of this map. Thank you in advance! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 17:27, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

@Dwergenpaartje: Hope this works - File:Felicia_distribution.svg - I have simplified some patches with elliptical outlines. Cheers. Shyamal L. (talk) 04:49, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
@Shyamal:Thank you for this quick action. I really appreciate it. I do have one request though. The two isolated outposts should be in Cameroon and Nigeria close to the border with Cameroon, and both are now in Nigeria. Could you please have another look and adjust those please. Thank you again in advance! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 09:36, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
@Dwergenpaartje: I have made some slight adjustments but with an overlay of the original map (there is some distortion and I cannot warp it exactly to match the SVG outline map) and I believe it is now close to the original - is there a chance that the historical boundaries were different? - are you using the descriptions in the text? Shyamal L. (talk) 15:27, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
@Shyamal:Thank you again. It is possible that the borders were different in 1957, and I can look into that. For now I will quote the two locations:
  • Nigeria; Jos, Naraguta Forest Reserve (1957)
  • Kamerun; Adama Div., Vogel Peak area Dakemi, 920m (1957), Adama Div., Vogel Peak area, Dawo 1160m (1957);

Dwergenpaartje (talk) 09:31, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Thank you, it looks like Adama is now in Nigeria as is Vogel peak. Shyamal L. (talk) 09:36, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
Great, than we have established that your distribution map is adequate, and that the location previously in Cameroon is now in Nigeria. I am glad we work together so well! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 12:49, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

File:Salt and Leprosy - II. Wellcome L0038519.jpgEdit

Hi, please check the result after doing an edit. Your edit caused the file to fall into the Category:Images without source problem category. Jcb (talk) 10:28, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

It becomes possible to fix if edit messages point out the problem. I believe the plan is to get rid of all categories anyway as things move to wikidata. Shyamal L. (talk) 10:58, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Leucospermum mapsEdit

Hi Shyamal, Thank you again for the useful maps you have created in the past. I would ones more like ask you to create a few more.

Perhaps I could again tempt you to create some of these maps. Thank you in advance and kind regards, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 10:52, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

I have some real life travel and work that will make these a little longer to make. Shyamal L. (talk) 11:37, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
However, here is a map for Felicia echinata - File:Felicia_echinata.svg. Shyamal L. (talk) 12:16, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Wow, that is real quick. No problem, it will take me two or three weeks before I will have made these articles. Travel safe! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 13:27, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
@Dwergenpaartje: - I think you missed the link for the Leucospermum reference map. Let me know when you need it. Shyamal L. (talk) 13:48, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

@Shyamal: Thank you for the alert and yes I missed it if you made anything for Leucospermum or any of its species. I would much appreciate any maps you may want to make for sp. of this genus, because I intend to create all of them, but I would not presume to ask you to do all 48. You may use this article and for the genus and for the species I have already expanded the wikipedia articles, I have indicate the page number. Leucospermum (p.269  ), L. saxosum (p.30   ), L. cuneiforme (p.37  ), L. conocarpodendron (p.54), L. truncatum (p.76), L. lineare (p.111  ), L. cordifolium (p.117  ), L. hypophyllocarpodendron (p.158  ), L. calligerum (p.184), L. prostratum (p.208  ), L. oleifolium (p.241  ). I am glad with any of these and particularly one of the genus as a whole. Thank you in advance! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 17:04, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

This seems to need more geographic familiarity - and with altitude contours it becomes harder to guide - I have been working with QGIS to try and generate a SVG contour map from open-source DEM files but so far my computer has let me down and I am still trying to reduce the data so that it can work without producing files that are more than a GB. I am still struggling with simplifying rasters but I found that Commons does not even have good physical maps. Added File:Africa-landcover.jpg and File:Africa_contours.svg as by-products. Shyamal L. (talk) 11:27, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Whew, generating the altitudes contour base map took a lot longer than I had expected - File:Southern_Africa_altitudes.svg - will do the maps soon. Shyamal L. (talk) 04:13, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
@Dwergenpaartje: Have added maps based on pre-existing maps (my unfamiliarity with place names does not let me produce any from descriptions) File:Leucospermum_distribution.svg, File:Leucospermum oleaefolium distribution.svg, File:Leucospermum hypophyllocarpodendron distribution.svg, File:Leucospermum_saxosum_distribution.svg, File:Leucospermum lineare distribution.svg, File:Leucospermum cordifolium distribution.svg, File:Leucospermum_prostratum_distribution.svg and File:Leucospermum cuneiforme distribution.svg. Shyamal L. (talk) 04:34, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
This is wonderful. I'm gonna put them in immediately. By the way, I notice there is a template with the hypophyllocarpodendron map questioning its copyright status. Thank you so much! Dwergenpaartje (talk) 08:15, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

IanthiaGoodfellowiGronvold.jpgEdit

Dear Shyamal, the illustration IanthiaGoodfellowiGronvold.jpg (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Vauriella_goodfellowi) is according to me misplaced as Vauriella goodfellowi. I think this bird must be Brachypteryx goodfellowi or Tarsiger indicus formosanus (most likely). Vauriella goodfellowii does not have a thin but long and clear white supercillium.

Greeting, Henrik de Nie, --HWN 08:13, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

It certainly is misplaced, looking at the history, I see that I had left it uncategorized. Strangely if you look at the descriptions in the text a few pages after the plate - there is a proper description of Brachypteryx goodfellowi - https://archive.org/stream/ibis961912190712brit#page/652/mode/1up - and I cannot find any mention of the genus Ianthia (or Janthia ) in any synonymy .... Tarsiger certainly does look like a possibility. Shyamal L. (talk) 10:46, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Yes! About genus Ianthia (in 1953): "According to the modern classification Ianthia, Tarsiger and Pogonocichla are all united to Erithacus" (https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/40590985#page/59/mode/1up). Thanks for your quick reply, --HWN 22:06, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Pictures from Journal für Ornithologie 1902Edit

Dear Shyamal, are pictures from Journal für Ornithologie just like these: Rhipidura matthiae free from copyright? Is it possible to upload these illustrations without knowing who is the author? Can I use screendumps? Thanks for your reaction. --HWN 11:15, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

@Hwdenie: I believe this would be eligible for the tag {{PD-1923}} - public domain, published outside the US prior to 1923 - see this. It would be good to figure out the artist nevertheless. Shyamal L. (talk) 13:47, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

File:LaniusSchachMap.svgEdit

Hello.

Can you add South Sudan in File:LaniusSchachMap.svg?

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 580 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps, that is why I asked you.

Thank you.

Maphobbyist (talk) 14:26, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

I would really like to use an apolitical base map for animal distribution maps. The country boundaries here are really unfortunate and if I have time, I would use a base map that has no country boundaries, unfortunately these are hard to find on Commons in svg format. Shyamal L. Judging Wiki Loves Monuments India 2018Edit

Hi, @Shyamal, as we discussed during Wikimania, we would love to have you as one of our honored judges for the upcoming Wiki Loves Monuments, India 2018. We really hope you would accept this and help us with your expertise. Please do let us know if you have any particular ideas or anything else you think we should know. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 18:31, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

@Bodhisattwa: - reluctantly yes, but as I discussed earlier - the policy needs to allow judgement primarily on the basis of effort put into selecting image for a specific instructional purpose - ie the intent with which the image is taken, the article where it adds value, and the metadata are more important than mere photographic merit. Shyamal L. (talk) 04:01, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 IndiaEdit

Hi Shyamal, this is to inform you that the after the upload process ended last night, the team is now going through the initial steps of sorting out irrelevant images, images with watermark, bad filename etc. We will take few days to sort these initial steps and would present to you and other members of the jury with the final set of images to judge on. We would also give the access to the Montage tool then and help you with it, if you need. We are planning to complete the initial steps within 7-10 October. --Sumit Surai (talk) 15:45, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 India - Jury RoundEdit

Hi Shyamal, we have set up the Jury round for you and other juries to decide on. We will be going for two rounds. In the first from among 446 images you need to eliminate those which according to you does not meet the minimum quality criteria. The images which will remain will go to the second round, where you would be able to rank them as per your choice. I would be sending all details via email. Please let me know if you have any queries or face any issues. Thanks --Sumit Surai (talk) 11:56, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Will check and let you know. Shyamal L. (talk) 16:21, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Hi Shyamal, we have created the 2nd round. Unfortunately, as we found out that Montage is showing only 100 images in the ranking round, we had to divide it into 2 rounds. There would be this 2nd round of rating, where you would be able to rate the images from 1 to 5 and the last round of ranking with the best 100. The good news is by dividing it into 2 rounds the number of images to be judged by each jury would be much lesser. Please do let me know if you have any queries or face any issues. Thanks, --Sumit Surai (talk) 13:34, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Picture and info should match and to be correct.

Thanks for the comments, unfortunately it is a bit too late to use this very useful input. Can you please tell me where the text is currently incorrect? Ideally it would be good for you to directly edit and correct what you find as wrong. The contest is a rather large and complex one with several organizers, three jury members - of whom I was one. Obviously we have not been able to incorporate community commentary and judgement into the system, which would have allowed the identification of incorrect metadata at an early enough stage. We will definitely take these points for improvement of the system in the future. Shyamal L. (talk) 08:00, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
@Bodhisattwa: @Sumitsurai: Here are some of my thoughts for any future WLMs in India, their organizers and jury members. Just placing them here lest I forget. Please feel free to use any amended forms if you are creating any learning pattern/anti-pattern. Shyamal L. (talk) 13:56, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
  • I had suggested that the judgement rules be altered to give emphasis on metadata accuracy, value addition to relevant articles, intent and thought process behind creating the images. - Judging these parameters it seems cannot be done by one or two jury members, it really needs to be done by a knowledgeable community process and this might need a lot of time.
  • It may be good to provide sufficient time - a first round where the community goes through the images - reviews them for accuracy of metadata, naming, spots any copyvios etc, makes use of good images in articles across languages and implicitly makes a vote. Perhaps some encouragement on this front in terms of community vetting prizes could be considered. I really think this would be a big and welcome step in democratizing what is otherwise a very suspect venture involving jury members making rather private decisions, not perhaps very well justified, and entirely without options for debate or discussion.
  • The idea that monuments should be restricted to ASI listed ones appears to be rather limiting - but I suspect that opening it up will again throw up challenges in recognizing what is claimed as above.
  • Judgement on photographic merit and judgements on other parameters (such as usability, usage, metadata accuracy etc) cannot be averaged.
  • Software such as Montage, while doing well on isolating jury members and encouraging independent rating may also need to do the reverse - open up communications, commentary and feedback especially in what ought to be a last round.
  • Montage would do well to provide convenient tools - such as links to Tineye/google image search, usage stats, and EXIF info

Thanks friends the information is updated Also appreciate you guys are taken my feedback positively for WLM 2019, keep it up.

ThanQ

Re. File:DorylusQueen.jpgEdit

Dear Shyamal, after having read the Army ant article and specifically the "Morphology of the Queen" (para. 1.4), where it states that: The queens of army ants are unique in that they do not have wings, have an enlarged gaster size and an extended cylindrical abdomen., futhermore, the relevant citation states: ...Because queens are flightless and never leave their colony... I'm puzzled, and would like to ask you: Are you certain that this is a Dorylus Queen?
With kindest regards! --Aristo Class (talk) 14:36, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

@Aristo Class: I have just had a look at en:Army ant, and frankly that article is a mess. I suspect that the original editor started with Eciton (a New World group member) and then someone added other groups into it. I am quite certain that this looks good for a Dorylus. What I am not entirely sure now is whether it is a queen or a male. I thought it was a queen because I saw what looked like a median ocellus. Alex Wild has this image and he is sure his winged specimen is a male https://www.alexanderwild.com/Ants/Taxonomic-List-of-Ant-Genera/Dorylus/i-skh6kbh/A - a male would have a 13 segmented antenna and I can imagine 12 or 13 in this image. So it could be a male. Let me recheck this with my ant specialist friend Dr Musthak Ali. Shyamal L. (talk) 15:32, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
Frankly speaking I also think that is most probably a male. However, I have serious doubts whether it's a Dorylus. Thanks for your prompt response! --Aristo Class (talk) 15:39, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
@Aristo Class: You are right, it is definitely a male - have a look at https://archive.org/details/hymenoptera02bing/page/2 PS: Thank you for being alert, critical, and letting me know. Shyamal L. (talk) 15:48, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

@Hunu: - not sure why I had put that in a different color - I have simplified it now and made it summer as given on HBW and IUCN - maybe it breeds in the south of that region but I am unable to find sources for that at the moment. Shyamal L. (talk) 12:30, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for correction. By the way, I like range maps on this site, for example [1]. Hunu (talk) 02:02, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
