Slaunger...

The camera I bought before Christmas is a Nikon D3400 with 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 lens. As i said I'll be going to tge Philippines on January 9, where a Nikon 70-300mm 4-5.6 lens is waiting for me. I did have a kodak camera with a wide angle lens but I wasn't serious back then. So this is me starting over fresh with a couple of lens. While I'm in the Philippines I'll be taking pictures for commons so expect to see me nect month with more pictures. Adamdaley (talk) 10:12, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Adamdaley, I wish you a good trip to the Phillipines. That is a fine entry-level DSLR you have acquired. As I wrote the lens you have now can be set to a much smaller aperture than between f/3.5 and f/5.6. Those two humbers just indicate the largest aperture it cen se set to, and the exact value of that depends on the focal length. I have an almost similar lens kit set for my dated Canon EOS 600D, and as you can see here it is possible to get a moving object sharp. In this case with a 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 lens set to an aperture of f/8. -- Slaunger (talk) 10:27, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
Slaunger, all you need to do now is to take your pictures in "Manual mode" instead of "Auto". That is where I learnt to configure it from "Auto" to "Manual" was 4 years ago in my Photography class. You will see the "M" on the dial and then you would need to go into "Menu" then into "White Balance" and change it to the weather conditions of that day. Try and experiment, and put them onto the computer and play around with them on the computer and look at the details if you right click on the image properties. Hope this will make your pictures better for 2017! Adamdaley (talk) 01:34, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
Adamdaley Thanks for the advice. I often shoot in manual, but also often in aperture priority mode, as I often know which aperture will be best for the scene. I always shoot in raw, and in when I do that I do not have to worry about how the WB is set. The raw is independent of that. I set the WB to an appropriate value when developing my images in Lightroom. If you have the raw, Lightroom is superior to Photoshop as the first step in postprocessing. Happy New Year! -- Slaunger (talk) 16:02, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
I tried using "NEF" files in Lightroom. Lightroom didn't like the "NEF" files. Which are the RAW files on my camera. Adamdaley (talk) 20:59, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Adamdaley The raw files my Canon camera generates are .CR2 files. NEF files comes in different versions, and you need a version of Lightroom, which includes Camera Raw ver. 9.7 or later in order to get import support for the NEF files generated by your brand new D3400. See Help... About to see which version of Camera Raww your lightroom installation supports. I just checked my Lightroom installation, which I have not updated for a while, and it 'only' uses camera Raw ver. 9.1.1, so I guess most likely your Lightroom is not recent enough? Under Help... Updates... you can update your Lightroom via CreativeCloud if you have a subscription. -- Slaunger (talk) 21:38, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Slaunger ... I found this: "Lightroom does not support the following types of files: Adobe Illustrator®; Nikon scanner NEF; files with dimensions greater than 65,000 pixels per side or larger than 512 megapixels." While I have version 9.8. Adamdaley (talk) 21:46, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Adamdaley I do not know what is the source of this error. If you are using camera raw 9.8 you ought to be compliant with NEF files from your D3400. Search the net for people having similar problems or make a post on Adobe. Sorry i can't help more. -- Slaunger (talk) 22:05, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Valuable Image

Slaunger,

Would you be able to nominate the following image for valuable image? Jose Rizal National Monument.jpg It would be appreciated if you could do this. --Adamdaley 04:34, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Adamdaley, I would be reluctant to do that, as there are very many photos of this monument on Commons, and I am not convinced that your picture is the one that best illustrates this monument on Commons. You have taken the image in landscpae orientation, and it appears to me that a portrait format would have been more adequate for illustrating the monunent as it is taller than it is wide. A picture can only become VI if it is best in scope. Much better idea to photograph more rarely photographed topics and bring in some new material on Commons - if you want photos to be promotable as VI. -- Slaunger (talk) 22:47, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
Slaunger ... If I take images of monument here, and there are for example 40 images by 1 person, will I be able to get my image assessed for valuable image? Adamdaley 04:11, 15 January 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamdaley (talk • contribs) 04:11, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
