File:D.polylepis wide.jpg

How is that possible? I was in contact with the author and he said that he not agreed to commercial reuse but only allowed reuse in wikipedia for non-commercial purposes. And that he will never agree to commercial reuse beause he cant allow this for contract reasons. --Martin H. (talk) 18:57, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Martin H. I noticed a ticket in OTRS (#2011121010015501) and I read that the uploader of Flickr gave permission to use it. He only asked for a link to his Flickr page. Of course this isn't sufficient and I wanted to send an email asking permission for a more specific license (by mistake I added the "PermissionOTRS" template instead of "OTRS received"). Did you email with the uploader himself or the one who uploaded it on Commons? I'll await your response before I reply on the uploader. Kind regards, Trijnstel (talk) 19:04, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
The uploader first uploaded some files from with own work claims (deleted) - reuploaded with the claim that some Peter Hutch is the author (File:Zoo-black-mamba.jpg) AND that this Peter Hutch gave permission - deleted with evidence that Hutch isnt the author as claimed - again reuploaded now with true author (File:D.polylepis wide.jpg). Given that the uploader first claimed that a non-author and non-copyright holder gave permission I found it unlikely that so quickly the true copyright holder agreed to free reuse of all(!) files from his flickr.
I conacted the author/copyright holder via flickr and he confirmed me that he gave permission to reuse the specific pictures (not all as claimed by the uploader) for non-commercial purposes in Wikipedia and that he is not okay with his work beeing reused under free content conditions including commercial reuse because for various legal reasons he cant grant commercial reuse under a free license. So indeed the uploader asked the copyright holder - given File:Zoo-black-mamba.jpg I had doubt if he truly asked him - but he not got and never will get a free license. And most likely he not correctly asked for a free licensing but only for reuse in Wikipedia. --Martin H. (talk) 19:18, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
I just came by this single ticket. I searched in the archive and now I see 11 tickets of the uploader (User:Sebastian80). I'll delete the pictures I restored and some more he uploaded and I'll specifically request permission of the uploaders themselves (some email addresses are given) before I provide onwiki permission. Regards, Trijnstel (talk) 19:38, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Update: I answered all emails he send to the queue permissions-commons. Initially I added "PermissionOTRS" for File:D-polylepis-in-defense.jpg as the permission of the original uploader (Bill Love) was given under the appropriate license, though I didn't trust the timestamps, see #2011121010011907 and #2011121010012817. I deleted all other files for which the uploader didn't give permission under the correct license. The uploader uploaded more images and now three images of snakes are left (File:Copperhead snake.jpg, File:Crotalus viridis 02.jpg and File:Dendroaspis viridis 001.jpg). For all three I couldn't find the corresponding OTRS tickets in the system, so I presume those will be deleted too in the near future. Thanks for giving some background. Kind regards, Trijnstel (talk) 20:28, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
The 1st looks ok, its a pd image database. The other two is also ok taken from one of this needless mirror websites of the National Digital Library of the US National Park Service, {{FWS Image}}, though the licensing is correct. --Martin H. (talk) 20:33, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Dear Americophile. Imo this image should've never been renamed (could be a request of the uploader, but that wasn't a valid reason to rename in this case). Plus I still don't like to see renames of pages of cities in Iran to their Persian names. That's something which should've been discussed first before you renamed them. You pointed to Commons:Gallery#Naming conventions, but there are not many Persian galleries on Commons and imo a request for permission would've been better than just rename them. Especially because all articles already existed for years. I started a thread about it on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard‎ to ask for the opinion of other administrators. Kind regards, Trijnstel (talk) 20:46, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Black mamba photo

This black mamba picture is the original work of Bill Love (website [1]). He gave me permission via both phone and e-mail to use that picture. I can still forward the e-mail. Bastian (talk) 17:57, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Nevermind, I just contacted Bill Love by phone (480-646-1297) and he uploaded it himself. I had permission from the man, why would you guys just delete it like that? Bastian (talk) 18:33, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

I deleted File:D-polylepis-in-defense.jpg, because I didn't trust the timestamps in the emails. You said he uploaded it himself; I found the file: File:Dendroaspis polylepis by Bill Love.jpg. In that case I think the permission was indeed arranged. I'll add the OTRS ticket numbers (#2011121010011907 and #2011121010012817) to it. Regards, Trijnstel (talk) 21:50, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Okay, I have been getting quite a few permissions to use snake photos from Flickr users, problem is I don't know how they should send a letter of granting me permission. Is there a format of some kind? I keep telling them to just make a username and upload it themselves, which they have been doing for the most part and I have been most humbly appreciative. Some have even asked me do to it on their behalf (make a username with their name and credit the photo to them). You got to help me out here, what kind of letter is required? What if they allow me to use any picture I want from their image sets? What then? I have had at least 2 make accounts and upload pictures which I asked for. First, this one File:Naja_nigricollis_Sunset_09_Warren_Klein.jpg, then two Chinese cobra pictures File:Cobra with tongue from rob ferguson Naja atra (Chinese cobra).jpg & File:Cobra from rob ferguson Naja atra (Chinese cobra).jpg. BTW, can I re-upload the black mamba pic that Bill Love uploaded, only rotated to the other side. Like the first one with the mamba facing the left side. It looks much better on the article? Bastian (talk) 04:27, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Bastian. A lot of questions. I'll try to reply on each one of them (My apologies for the late reply btw; I was busy):
1) Yes, there is a standard letter. See Commons:OTRS for an explanation and an example of a letter to give permission.
2) I would recommend you to still request permission from the people who uploaded a picture for you (send it to OTRS by using the example letter and give a link to the file).
3) I also recommend you to request permission for each file you would like to upload. That's easier for both you, the person who has the image and us (the OTRS volunteers). They can't just say that you can use every image they have on their website. And again, please use the letter on Commons:OTRS.
4) Yes, you can reupload a file. Please use this form.
I hope I helped you; if you still have questions, feel free to ask. Kind regards, Trijnstel (talk) 17:27, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Request for one more otrs validation?

Hi Trijnstel, thank you so much for the extremely quick OTRS response on the Kate Upton photo I uploaded earlier today. I understand there may be a backlog at OTRS, but I was wondering if I could request verification for File:Sara Paxton at Mother Goose Parade, 2007.jpg, which has not been identified by the OTRS team for a while now. The email's subject is "Sara Paxton photo". Would love to finally have it settled. If you could help, or know of someone who could help me, that would be fantastic. Thank you so much! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 05:27, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Kerαunoςcopia. We have indeed a backlog at OTRS. By coincidence I noticed the OTRS ticket of the Kate Upton photo and I decided to handle this one. I've answered your email about the Sara Paxton photo now as well and I made the necessary modifications to the file page. So this is now   Done. Kind regards, Trijnstel (talk) 17:03, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Hallo Trijnstel, oh I did not notice that File:Freddy-krueger-glove1.jpg got OTRS in the meantime and started a DR. Maybe you can comment or directly close it if you think own work is clear. Thank you! Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 20:27, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Saibo. I send an extra email to the uploader in which I ask for a clarification (if he's really the author and if he has the proof for that). Regards, Trijnstel (talk) 21:07, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Commons:Rename a category

Hoi Trijnstel!

Lotje ʘ‿ʘ (talk) 20:26, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

My article about Jean Pottier

Picture Permission

Hello there! I noticed that you answered my topic regarding the permission for file : CherishBlondAmbition telling me the permission couldn't be verified yet?? Can you tell me what was the problem for this?? And if I should get the owner to send another email with the permission?? THANK YOU!!!--VernitaG (talk) 20:47, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Dear VernitaG. Since the image was posted on the fan site, I'd like to see a confirmation mail of the owner of that site (see here for his email address). I'm not sure who send the image now, but I can't confirm it's of the owner. It could be of the photographer himself (which is good), but the owner should confirm it. Trijnsteltalk 19:07, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
So should i get the owner of the page to send the permission email again??? what email address was the email sent from??--VernitaG (talk) 05:48, 7 April 2012‎ (UTC)
Sorry, but because of privacy I can't give you the email address of the person who send the email. Though I'd prefer an email of both the photographer and the owner of the website. (The photographer because of the permission to use the photo and the owner of the website to make sure it's correct.) Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 15:15, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
I just got an email from the owner of the website Hans Schaft (he also clarified that he did took the picture) saying he did send the email. from the contact email address on the website.--VernitaG (talk) 16:33, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
A second email was received and now the permission is confirmed, see here. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 17:50, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

verwijderde foto van Qadria Yazdanparast

Dag Trijnstel,

Groet, Erik Wannee (talk) 17:19, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

It's OK, as long as you won't do it anymore.   And I sure trust you; I don't have any reason not to. Keep up the good work! Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 21:16, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words, Trijnstel! Raymond has just subscribed me to the mailing list, and you seem to be working on granting me the access to #wikimedia-privacy right now, too :-)) I will be learning the practice for now, hope to be of help, especially on IRC. Looking forward to working with you! odder (talk) 19:46, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Yep, I just gave you access to #wikimedia-privacy. I'm looking forward to working with you as well! Regards, Trijnsteltalk 19:51, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Abuse Filter #69

Dear Trijnstel. I getting to you because you have last modified Special:AbuseFilter/69 which is tagging edits for "OTRS permission by non-OTRS member". The filter obviuosly is only applied to edits, but does not catch uploads that are done by a non-OTRS member directly with (invalid) OTRS tag included. Could you please modify the filter that it matches at action=upload, too? (As there is no old_wikitext in this case, there possibly has to be a major modification.) Thank you! --Krd 20:53, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Done, see here. Though Krinkle adviced me on IRC - after I did the edit - to begin a discussion about this change as this is a non-trivial change. Trijnsteltalk 21:26, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. Is there a discussion already ongoing? At which page? --Krd 07:32, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
As far as I know there isn't and personally I don't think any discussion is needed. Btw, please check if the uploads will be catched now. Regards, Trijnsteltalk 11:25, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm going to test it and get back to you if it doesn't work.
I am also planning to write a bot skript that adds all new entries to a maintenance page, so that there can be tracked which entries already have been checked, but maybe there is some discussion needed if and where to keep such a page and pointing other people to assist checking those entries. If you have an idea, please let me know, otherwise i put it on the Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. --Krd 11:43, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
It seems not to work yet, see File:testtest.jpg. (Please delete that image.) --Krd 11:57, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Deleted (together with the newer uploads of the other file). Trijnsteltalk 12:14, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll take a closer look at it later today. Trijnsteltalk 12:14, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Let me quote Rillke from here: BTW, you can't check the Wikitext while uploading (it's empty). Read Special:AbuseFilter/81 and the associated links (bugzilla:19565). In short this means the abusefilter doesn't work for uploads yet and we should await the help of a developer (but that could last years as there are open ones of 2004). Trijnsteltalk 22:34, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Ok, thank you. --Krd 07:05, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

You're welcome, I guess. I believe you won't abuse the flag here, which is why I didn't oppose you. Hopefully we can leave all problems behind us. Trijnsteltalk 22:21, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

I still see Commons as my home project, I'm not going to do things what brings that in a danger. And I left the problems behind me long ago :) Huib talk Abigor @ meta 09:01, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

I understand them also when I really want to. I transfered my request to the archive. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 12:01, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Can you add the newly arrived OTRS-permission (as mentioned here) to the image, please?

Thanks for your support! Regards, High Contrast (talk) 17:37, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Done and you're welcome! Trijnsteltalk 17:52, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Trijnstel,
did you check the substance of this permission? I am asking because the source website says in its terms "This site and its content is the copyright of two bits s.r.o. All rights reserved. Any redistribution or reproduction of part or all of the contents in any form is prohibited."[3]. --Túrelio (talk) 09:42, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Túrelio. I re-checked OTRS ticket:2012060710006501 now and the permission was provided by someone of Tripomatic itself. I'm not sure if it's provided by the company two bits s.r.o too (who claims to operate the site though. So I hesitate a bit. What do you advice me to do now? Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 16:56, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
No special advise. I only have some overall doubts: if you take the above linked image, 1) it carries a watermark "(C) CloudMade ..." (is that somebody or did they want to say cloud-made? I doubt that such "clouds" can own copyright.), 2) uploader Parimucha says "own work" (= "I am the author"), 3) the author entry say "", 4) it is self-licensed (i.e., by the uploader). All this simply doesn't fit together. Does say/claim to the author in the permission? --Túrelio (talk) 15:59, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Not really. It says "I hereby affirm that ** is the creator..." and it's said by a project manager of both Tripomatic and Two Bits. Trijnsteltalk 16:08, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Well, if they are personally identified by name and contact data, we could just take their statement by face value and in case of a wrong copyright claim they will be legally liable. As I am not an OTRS volunteer, feel free to discuss this with one of your colleagues. In addition, the inconsistent entries in the image description should be corrected according to the permission. --Túrelio (talk) 16:17, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
FYI: I now received an email in which he gives permission for three other images (ticket:2012061410006489). Trijnsteltalk 19:38, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Turelio, it says "(C) CloudMade - MapData CCBYSA 2012 contributors". (C) not always means that it reserves its rights. In this case it also seems to be the right thing to do, given that they are based on a CC-BY-SA Work. They look good to me. Platonides (talk) 21:03, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

File:Luciano Chessa conducting the premiere of "It All Begins Now", Dec 2010.jpg

You added an OTRS permission tag here. Is it really correct that the copyright holder approved dual licensing of CC-BY-SA 1.0 and CC-BY-SA 3.0? This seems to be an unusual licence combination. Also, the {{Self}} contradicts with the source field. Could you check the file again? --Stefan4 (talk) 22:10, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Sure, but I'll do it tomorrow as I'm out of time right now. Thanks for informing me. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 22:19, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for checking it. I fixed the license cf the email send to OTRS. Trijnsteltalk 19:12, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
No problem. I happened to have the file on my watchlist since I previously tagged it as {{subst:npd}}. --Stefan4 (talk) 19:13, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

For my own OTRS education, can you tell me what is missing in 2012061410007915?--Sphilbrick (talk) 19:36, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Sometimes nothing is missing. :) I occasionally add {{OTRS received}} templates to images/files to prevent them from being deleted soon. Trijnsteltalk 19:41, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
OK, it looks like valid permission, so I was wondering if I missed something.--Sphilbrick (talk) 20:29, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Question about CommonsDelinker

Thanks for granting me file mover rights, I have one question though. I have requested moves of over 40 files and they all have been moved except that the file name was not changed on the English Wikipedia. Is that because the person that moved the file didn't change it? I'm not sure what you have to do to replace the file name on other Wikipedias. Thanks, --Astros4477 (talk) 23:29, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Astros4477. If you click on the green "rename and replace" button (I thought that's what it says), then the file will be renamed and a rename request will be placed on User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands‎. (Unless you're an admin, then it will be added to User:CommonsDelinker/commands‎.) Once someone picks those requests up and adds them to the 'main' page, nothing will happen. Then CommonsDelinker will process them and perform them. Usually within an hour IIRC. See CAT:RENAME for more information. Hope this helps. If not, feel free to ask any of your questions. Good luck! Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 23:37, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the help! One thing though, File:Hotel Breakers 2009.jpg doesn't list it being used in the English Wikipedia, even though it is used on the English wikipedia. It does say there's a file redirect but how long will that stay?--Astros4477 (talk) 00:07, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't understand your question. That file isn't used on the English Wikipedia and is uploaded on Commons. Trijnsteltalk 00:10, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
On the other hand, you're right. You should request a rename via User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. Trijnsteltalk 00:13, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Hello again, I've grown more comfortable with moving files but File:Cedar Fair Fast Lane availibility icon.svg was renamed to File:Cedar Fair Fast Lane availability icon.svg and CommonsDelinker renamed some of the files on Wikipedia but it didn't rename all of them. Why would it replace some but not all?--Astros4477 (talk) 04:03, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
As far as I can see none is renamed by CommonsDelinker, see here. So these still have to be renamed. Please file a request for it. Trijnsteltalk 12:26, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Trijnsteltalk 21:09, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
Bedankt. :) Lotje ʘ‿ʘ (talk) 21:12, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Hey Túrelio! Thanks for the report. Both IPs are already globally blocked and I changed it here to 1 day as they're highly dynamic. This is the long-term vandal Wikinger. A few minutes ago I blocked a range for 1 hour. I'll keep an eye on him. And if he continues then I'll globally block more ranges. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 14:58, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

I don't speak Spanish, but imho this information shouldn't be added to the file page. Instead add them to the relevant page on Wikipedia. Trijnsteltalk 22:06, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Filemover welcome error.

Thanks for the welcome as a Filemover. Your edit caused a small problem, though - it added __NOEDITSECTION__ to the page. This seems to be following a template, as it also appeared in your welcomes to Astros4477 and Дагиров Умар. I'm not sure which template your welcome is coming from, so I can't fix it myself, but I thought you'd like to know. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 08:06, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Philosopher. Thanks for informing me. I used this template, but I can't see what's going wrong right now. I customized the user messages script by adding it to my personal common.js (User:Trijnstel/common.js). I'll ask Rillke for his help as he knows more about this gadget and technical stuff in general. Thanks again. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 14:53, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
This issue is fixed in-between. The template was not designed properly for user page use. Thehelpfulone added __NOEDITSECTION__ on 2012-05-13 instead of changing == to <h2>. But the template needed i18n anyway. -- RE rillke questions? 16:28, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for informing me. That's indeed a bit strange. I only fixed the template, but I have nothing to do with the deletion. Sorry. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 14:28, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Hmmm... can do you me a favour and take a close 2nd look at the OTRS ticket involved? If it looks good, then I'll do a speedy undelete on that basis. Tabercil (talk) 16:33, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedians looking for help

Hallo Trijnstel, may I ask why you created Category:Wikipedians looking for help? What is its purpose? It seems redundant to the users needing help category. Thank you! --Saibo (Δ) 01:48, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Ah.. for Template:Help me?! But that is redundant to template:helpme isn't it? --Saibo (Δ) 01:50, 7 July 2012 (UTC) So I would suggest a template redir (so enwp users can use the same name they are apparently used to at enwp). --Saibo (Δ) 01:59, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
Yep, for that template. :) But I didn't notice there was another one. Feel free to redirect the template + category. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 10:22, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Permission of Licensing

You confirmed the OTRS of this files: and But said that the message was not sufficient to confirm permission for this file because the email address that the permission came from is not associated with the location where the content was originally published, so I sent an email back to the commons to confirm the licensing file, this has already been answered in an email associated with the site where the file came from. If you can confirm the permission, grateful. Sorry for bad English... Sílvia Gomes (talk) 16:23, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Dear Sílvia Gomes. I appreciate your efforts, but that wasn't the reason why I added that template to those file pages. :) As the Portuguese OTRS volunteers aren't very quick these days in replying, I decided to add {{OTRS received}} to prevent them from being deleted soon. I'll wait until a week after you send your email and if they then still didn't reply I'll handle the two tickets you send to us (ticket:2012050810011905 of 8 May and ticket:2012070810003251 of 8 July). Thanks in advance for the patience. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 19:29, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I'm thinking :-) Regards. --Dэя-Бøяg 17:23, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi DerBorg. You doesn't have to fear your (possible) lack of knowledge. I'm sure you know enough to handle the admin buttons and to do your work well. You'll be fine. And don't remember, you may always ask me or any other admin for their help if you're uncertain about what to do. There isn't some sort of "test-admin" option, but don't worry. You won't need it anyway. :) In case you still have any doubts, you could read the Commons:Guide to adminship. copyright vio regarding pictures

  2. Siner 3
  3. DontGiveA

I noticed User:11JORN uploaded these pictures and I also noticed that the OTRS permission indicates there isn't enough evidence. This is correct as I emailed Hans Schaft the owner of the website those pix are from and he confirmed he didn't sent the permission for those, files. The user who uploaded those pictures committed a violation. he either send those permission emails himself or from another email address. The webmaster of MadonnaUnderground Didn't send those emails.

Hi Queen Rapsheeba. The relevant OTRS ticket is ticket:2012070810000226. The email was indeed send from his personal email address. I noticed that user has uploaded several images that have been deleted for copyright vio, i think he's sending the permission mails himself posing as the owner. i think something should be done about it.--Queen Rapsheeba (talk) 23:43, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
I gave him a final warning, see User talk:11JORN#Copyright violations. Tomorrow, or maybe later as I'm quite busy, I'll look at his other uploads. Trijnsteltalk 23:48, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

New Message! Heads up!

Hi Trijnstel, I have a doubt in renaming. As you know i am involved in TWMC cleanup, there are many files which has transliterated Tamil names. For example Tamil meaning of grains is தானியங்கள் (which is transliterated as dhaniyankal in englishFile:Dhaniyangal.jpg). Now the problem is, In what lang. the renaming should be done? (Tamil or English) and What's the renaming criteria that can be mentioned? (FR#2 or ?). Thanks in advance --Shanmugamp7 (talk) 06:50, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Shanmugamp7. COM:RENAME states "Remember, Commons is a multilingual project, so there's no reason to favor English over other languages". This means you may of course use the original Tamil name. But if the file name doesn't contain any obvious errors, it's better not to change anything. It doesn't fit in the rename criteria. Trijnsteltalk 10:18, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
See Jesus, the page name is not in English! But, there are at least 15 widely spoken languages in India, and not everyone will not be able to read the file name in Tamil). For example, if you search images of Rajatava Dutta in Commons (a Bengali film actor), will you search it by search query "Rajatava Dutta" or you will type in Bengali "রজতাভ দত্ত"? Of course you will search in English. So, if the file is named in Tamil, I think it is very important to add a detailed description in English, so that it can be found in search in English too! BTW, n this file: File:Dhaniyangal.jpg, the description is too short, IMO! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 11:00, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Here the problem is, the file name not in English (that name is transliteration) and also not in Tamil script. The transliteration may vary person to person (For example:grains may be written as dhaniyankal or thaniyankal or daniyankal or dhaniyangal.....). If a person don't know Tamil means, he can't identify the subject. If it is in Tamil script means he/she can use any translation tools. (I'm asking you because, this doesn't match with any renaming criteria :) ). The description part also written like this. I think the person uploaded don't know, how to type in Tamil (I will correct description part later). Now the question is, whether should i rename it or not?. If it's to be renamed, then what should be the target language. Thanks--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 12:28, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Okay, first, I promise, this will be my last post in this thread (unless I am directly addressed). Has anyone requested rename? If not, why you want to rename the file? If you want Tamil script, add in description, you can also add Teleugu, Malayalam or any other language you want (multii language description is really helpful sometimes)! And, as you have said, transliteration may vary from person to person, you can add all those in the description (eg. dhaniyankal or thaniyankal or daniyankal or dhaniyangal.....)! There will not be any problem in searching! You can also try to talk to the uploader, I can see he had participated in Tamil Wikimedia contest, so, there are chances you will get reply! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 13:01, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi Titodutta. As i said earlier, i am involved in TWMC cleanup, it has many files which are not categorized, lacking description, irrelevant names or description. Here the problem is not adding description, It's the file name which has transliterated names (It can be considered as meaningless in the language, which the name was written ), and as i said earlier //transliteration may vary from person to person//, then how can i add all the words. //Has anyone requested rename? If not, why you want to rename the file? // Renaming can be done if a file matches with any renaming criteria, no need of any request (And also i'm cleaning up TWMC files 25000+). Many users participated in twmc has no edits after the contest (see (talk) 13:31, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
My advice: "Bij twijfel niet inhalen" (Dutch). It means that if you have your doubts about something, then you shouldn't act. Trijnsteltalk 23:44, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Ok Trijnstel,I will not rename that files..I think we should have a line about this transliterated file names in the renaming policy :)--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 02:56, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Re: Copyright violations

I didn't know how to upload OTRS images. I did it as this picture was uploaded, which is from the same source. I could have asked for help for upload them. 11JORN (talk) 00:35, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes but it wasn't Hans Schaft (owner of Madonnaunderground) who sent the OTRS permission email. Therefore the pix U uploaded were in fact copyright violations as someone else pretending to be the owner of the website/pictures send that mail.--Queen Rapsheeba (talk) 16:24, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
Actually, I don't think he did it on purpose. It's better to explain him the 'rules' of Wikimedia Commons and OTRS. Trijnsteltalk 20:35, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

PD Image

If in a Commons image we have PD-India tag added and not PD-US (1947 etc images), can that be uploaded in Commons? --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 11:27, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Sure it can. But if another PD tag is also relevant (such as {{PD-old}}), don't forget to mention that one too. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 13:22, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. No, PD-old is not relevant. Few images have been nominated for deletion, one is Commons:Deletion requests/File:Times of India front Page 15 August 1947.png.
I have not mentioned it there, but if only PD India license is not enough, it is going to create a huge problem, there are thousands of Commons images depending on PD-India only! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 14:05, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, there is loads of important historical images that are licensed as PD-India. I am naive in this area, but the necessity of US tag is because the servers are located in US, is this understanding correct?--Dwaipayanc (talk) 14:21, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Any suggestion? --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 01:42, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Not really. I don't know everything from everything and I'm not sure about this case. I should ask others for their help. Trijnsteltalk 11:03, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Evidence of permission

Hi Trijnstel. Please can you advise what additional evidence is needed to accept the following photos? These two were taken by me personally:

These two are owned by Dahon and have full permission of the company and of the subject himself to use:,_Founder_and_CEO_of_Dahon.jpg

Apologies for the extra work, I read pages and pages of guidelines to try to get everything right. Many thanks Typist28 (talk) 09:56, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Typist28. I only added the {{OTRS received}} to prevent them from being deleted soon; I haven't processed the tickets yet. :) Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 10:40, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Ok, thank you for the response! I shall await the result. Typist28 (talk) 13:12, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

What a user!

I have found out an editor– it seems their more than 450 files got deleted for copyright issue, but they have re-uploaded all 450+ files when the problem got solved. Superb work! One needs a heart of a phoenix for such work. You can see all details and my appreciations here. Can you tell me about his Commons reputations before I add few more words of praise? What a user! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 06:10, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Tittodutta. I don't know that user, clearly German, very well. According to his SUL he has three projects where a has a lot of edits: the German Wikipedia (>35,000 edits), Wikimedia Commons (>35,000 edits) and the German Wikisource (>28,000 edits). All together he has more than 100,000 edits, so he's very experienced. Trijnsteltalk 10:31, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

See Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard#Files_overwritten_by_Eiland. -- Eiland (talk) 06:07, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I get back to that soon. I haven't forgotten it, don't worry. Trijnsteltalk 10:07, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Can someone please SERIOUSLY look into this issue?

Sometimes images are being kept and sometimes they are being deleted Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jawaharlal Nehru gives his speech at the first Independence Day.jpg currently everything depends on admins opinion. Can we have a common rule of every image? --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 09:55, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

I decided to start a thread on the admin noticeboard, see here. Please continue there. Trijnsteltalk 10:13, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Trijnstel, it's been pointed out to me that str4nd has made 5 admin actions on the day of last signing, so I didn't take any action here. As for The Evil IP address, I am not sure what to do; he clearly received the warning, but did not sign on the inactivity run page. I am going to ask him to clarify if he still wants to remain an administrator on Commons. odder (talk) 12:24, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks and thanks.   Asking him for a clarification is definitely a good idea, in that case you're sure you don't make any mistakes. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 12:50, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you. for a CU on te.wikipedia and confirming that Saleem100 is a new account of Sridhar1000.

I had posted I regret note in one of our forums because of probably emotional outburst in one of our interactions. I even wanted to remove one or two hurting comments but my friend Spiff restored them as part of threaded discussion and had them archived.
Although I now have no aspiration for a bigger role on Commons, I would still like to work on Common without an element of any ill-feeling and in that context I extend a warm hand of friendship.
Regards, Hindustanilanguage (talk) 10:44, 30 August 2012 (UTC).
Hi Hindustanilanguage! (Just back from my vacation.) Not a problem at all. I appreciate your apologies and your kind reply. I can understand people reply the way you did before; I probably would have done the same, I don't know. Anyway, thanks again. I'm sure we'll be able to work together in a nice way. With love, Trijnsteltalk 13:12, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Re: User talk:stephenwanjau#Welcome, Dear Filemover!

Re:Wiki Loves Monuments 2012

Hi Trijnstel — these are very good answers, thanks very much for handling those three tickets, and for bringing this to me.

As far as I know, the OTRS queues for WLM were not visible to all agents until a while ago, so that's why you might have not noticed them before. In the future, feel free to move any WLM-related e-mail to those queues; I have an e-mail notification set up for e-mails coming to the general (English) queue, so I can handle them.

And as for adding this question to the FAQ, I think it's a very good idea; we will be running a participant's survey very soon, so I think it would be nice to ask a question about what information the participants missed most, etc. In any case, thanks a lot for your help! odder (talk) 17:37, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. :) One thing though; I see now I can move tickets to the WLM queues, but I can't see the tickets in it - that's what you meant, right? Trijnsteltalk 18:03, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi again — yes, that's exactly what I meant; until a few days ago, you were not even able to move the tickets to the WLM queues, as they were not visible for agents that did not have access to them; this has been fixed by Rjd0060 (talk · contribs). odder (talk) 18:15, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
Ah, good to know. I didn't even know of that bug.   Thanks again! Trijnsteltalk 18:17, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for not replying to it earlier — I see now that Platonides has taken over ticket:2012092910001487, so I am leaving this to him to deal with. odder (talk) 19:52, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't matter. Great to hear that Platonides will solve this case. Trijnsteltalk 19:57, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

You recently deleted File talk:Celebrating Labor Day 2009, Guantanamo -f.jpg as "spam". That is a funny place for someone to leave spam. Can I ask the nature of this spam, and what other places you found it? Geo Swan (talk) 22:41, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Geo Swan. Sure you can. I'll explain it. The Wikimedia projects suffer from a lot of spam lately. You can roughly divide them in three groups: the Chinese spambots, the comment spam and the Russian comment spam. The Chinese spambots are single-purpose accounts which create user pages with spam on it; the underlying IP addresses always geolocate to China. The comment spam contain messages like "I'm very happy to see your article (etc)" and are added by open proxies and webproxies on file, template or category talk pages. The Russian comment spam are similar to the 'normal' comment spam, but then written in Russian. The page you mentioned was from the second group, comment spam. He created more nonsense pages and I blocked the IP address, (talk · contribs), for 1 month locally and globally (what I always do with these webproxies as they never stop). Hope this explains it a bit. If you have more questions about it, please ask. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 16:26, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Role accounts

Thank you for protecting Photo.JPG. I have another (possible) request for your administrator tools — Kevlar group may need to be blocked, since it's clearly a role account. Do we have any policy here prohibiting role accounts, comparable to en:WP:ROLE? If not, please don't bother, since as far as I can tell, the user hasn't done anything disruptive. Nyttend (talk) 01:16, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Nyttend. We don't have a policy regarding role accounts iirc, but we do have a username policy (though not official). I'll think about it. Trijnsteltalk 16:26, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

File:Edward Aitken.jpg & File:Patrick Gordon Spence Amended.jpg

Hi Trijnstel, hope you're well. When you have time, and if it's not too much trouble, could you please tell me if I re-deleted the above linked files by mistake? I'd look at them and restore accordingly if I could, but I'm afraid that is beyond my abilities at the moment :P Thanks! FASTILY (TALK) 06:56, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Fastily. Adheesha88 contacted me about this on the English Wikipedia too, see here. I found three tickets (ticket:2012051210002514, ticket:2012051210002541 and ticket:2012082010007347), but I still have to read them all and get to know which ticket applies to which file. I do think however that there is sufficient permission (from what I've seen), so I think we should restore the files. What do you think? (I thought you still have access to OTRS, have you?) Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 16:26, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
In that case, please restore the files accordingly then. I do have OTRS access, but not to the queue(s) these tickets are in. Thanks for taking the time to look into this. Best, FASTILY (TALK) 06:07, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

I restored the two images, but the permission (in ticket:2012051210002514) is not adequate enough. I send a reply in which I ask for more information. Trijnsteltalk 18:22, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Great! Thanks for looking into this :] Cheers, FASTILY (TALK) 09:29, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Page semi protection request!

Can you semi protect this page? I am not an everyday Commons visitor, I found the disruptive edit when I saw the template in my userpage is broken! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 02:19, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Done! You're absolutely right; there is no need for new users to edit this high-traffic page. Thanks. Trijnsteltalk 11:38, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

I see you deleted a good chunk of uploads, I'd blocked this account as a sock of User:Piku662 on (I'd nominated those files for deletion earlier). Just FYI, as he switched accounts after one was warned. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 16:43, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

I also took the liberty to close his RfA without waiting for a bureaucrat, as I felt there was no need to waste more time on it; hope you don't mind me doing that. odder (talk) 16:46, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
@SpacemanSpiff: aaah, thanks! I see he also uploaded File:Biju Phukan.jpg with the account Piku662. What do you think? Are all his other uploads copyvios too?
@Odder: of course I don't mind; I just didn't want to close it without even one comment or vote, so that's okay of course. :) Trijnsteltalk 16:48, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
I think the Phukan images are likely ok because from what I've seen he seems to a member of the family. However, there may be scope issues as they may not be notable people on whom any of the wikis are likely to have articles. I've just left a few of the articles standing on but may have to go through deletion process for them sooner rather than later. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 17:16, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi, can you update your userboxes please - your userpage is missing at least {{User steward}} and {{User global-sysop}} it seems. Thanks, Rd232 (talk) 10:54, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Rd232. I removed {{User steward}} because I didn't feel it was important to mention it on this project. Anyway,   Done. Trijnsteltalk 11:17, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
(As a steward usually you're not a global sysop at the same time; my global sysop rights were removed when I became a steward and a steward can do everything a global sysop can, +more.)
OK, thanks. I think it's helpful to know about a user's global rights certainly, and also rights on other projects. Rd232 (talk) 11:31, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

RFA questions

I hope you don't mind a quick question, since I noticed you were around. Can you look at Commons:Administrators/Requests/January, in the comment section? This user already left a neutral vote based on file-related technical questions for another RFA; I just don't see what these questions have to do with the role of a Commons admin? Thanks for your time. INeverCry 20:06, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Done. You're absolutely right. I don't understand these questions either... Trijnsteltalk 21:11, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Trijnstel. These are basically test questions. I guess this user wants prospective admins to have technical expertise in file editing in order to give them a support vote now. My position was that technical expertise of this kind has no bearing on an RFA. INeverCry 21:15, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Commons:Administrators/Requests/January #Comments

I sincerely apologize for my insinuations about your personality, which were based on that comment without considering any third-party influences. Hi Trij, I need your help about something. As an syspo, I received a request on ptwiki to remove a file, cause was said that it license do not allow t be use without atribute the copyrights to the onwer. The probeln is that a lot of pics like this exists in commons with that license; you know cause we see this in OTRS channel. So I deny the request, telling that the copyrights onwer it's already marked ih the file's page. Am I wright?+PrinceWilly 15:13, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

I'm afraid I don't understand the problem. He wants his name to be mentioned everytime when someone uses the file? Trijnsteltalk 15:16, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, they say that in GFDL:
B. List on the Title Page, as authors, one or more persons or entities responsible for authorship of the modifications in the Modified Version, together with at least five of the principal authors of the Document (all of its principal authors, if it has fewer than five), unless they release you from this requirement. +PrinceWilly 15:21, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
I know that's listed there and the authors name should indeed be mentioned (which isn't the case here). I also miss a source and explicit permission. The first sentence is "Version of Pp clock.gif on PNG-8 format." So I went looking at Image:Pp clock.gif and that one is deleted because of the following: "The source given by the uploader is incorrect - it is not a Nuvola icon, and is not PD-self. It's from Very nearly an exact duplicate of File:Crystal clock.png, which is in a more appropriate format." So the info as mentioned there won't help either. File:Crystal clock.png gives as source ("All Crystal icons were posted by the author as LGPL on kde-look"). I'm afraid it's more difficult than it seemed at first. We can't just delete the first file though as it's online for years and used overall. Trijnsteltalk 15:35, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Anyway, I changed the icon. +PrinceWilly 20:56, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Congratulations! However bureaucrats could not assign this status. My guess that stewards could :-) Please also update your status on Commons lists. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:25, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Beste Trijnstel.

En daar staat o.a.: "Share Alike — If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one."

File problem

Hi Trijnstel. Can you take a quick look at this: File:Aalesund (Norway) by night, 7.jpg? Thanks for your time. INeverCry 23:37, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Mass DR of copyvios

Hi Trijnstel. Since you're around, can you look at this mass DR: Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by زياد رجب? These are obvious copyvios, but there were too many to CSD. INeverCry 20:25, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

You could've nuked them all if you were convinced that those are obvious copyvios. But I haven't looked at them very clearly and I don't have time right now to do so either, so I think it's better to wait a week or so. Have you seen my question regarding a copyvio user too btw? If not, please take a look at it. :) Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 20:33, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Sorry I asked. I won't bother you again. INeverCry 20:41, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

OTRS-received dates

Hi Trijnstel. You recently added a lot of dates to OTRS-received boxes set by me. Please let me know if this is necessary, so I would do this myself next time. As far as I know there was a bot taking care of this, and additionally I'm not sure if this date is needed at all. To my opinion it is not necessary to utilise daily categories but the list of transclusions of the OTRS-received template should be sufficient. Please advise. Thank you. --Krd 08:40, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Krd. Yes, I think it's useful, tbh. The PermissionOTRS gadget automatically adds a date to it when you click on "OTRS received" and add an OTRS number. It's very useful to have a date on it, because in that case you see for which files it's long ago when we send an email to the copyright holder and we didn't receive a reply in the mean time. Then you can delete the old ones and leave the other ones. Without the date it's much harder to find out. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 13:57, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
To track the no response issues I created Commons:OTRS/received which is sorted by last file page edit and grouped by ticket number. I think this scaled much better than categories. Anyway, if you think the date is necessary, I try to remember to set it next time. Thank you. --Krd 16:29, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. That's a very useful page; please list it somewhere. But I do think that the categories are useful too, sorry. ;) Trijnsteltalk 16:46, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Please help

Hi Trijnstel,

As you had a little involvement before, could you please weigh in with an opinion here? It's not just a user name issue, but one of privacy and licensing and I am getting increasingly upset by the whole thing. Thank you. -- Hex 15:16, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

I understand your feelings, but as I'm not a local 'crat I can't push the others. Why this btw - it seems that the original request is restored? Trijnsteltalk 21:58, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Fair enough - I thought maybe you could contribute some encouragement. That other request was because I thought I could merge the old name into the temporary one, then merge that when I finally got control of the one I wanted. But apparently that isn't possible, so I decided to try the original request again. It looks now like it's finally going to happen, thanks to a suggestion from Cecil.
Best wishes, — Hex (❝?!❞) 21:40, 12 December 2012 (UTC).

Humanisti Korolaine-Virkajärvi Katri.JPG

Hey Trijnstel, I noticed you tagged File:Humanisti Korolaine-Virkajärvi Katri.JPG with an insufficient permission tag a month ago. Was there something wrong with the license? From what I can tell, the file specified the uploader as the author and had a valid free license tag in the first place... (It also seems to have been tagged for "no permission" earlier for some reason – I'm discussing with the tagger what the issue was there.) Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 10:28, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jafeluv. Nope, no insufficient imho, but I added {{OTRS received}} to prevent it from being deleted soon. Apparantly it didn't help. The related OTRS ticket is ticket:2012101710010531 and was initially send to the queue permissions-commons. As it was written in Finnish, a language I don't speak, I added that template and moved it to permissions-fi. Sadly no one answers the tickets in permissions-fi which is why there are so many open tickets in the queue and images are being deleted here. :( Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 21:37, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the info. I was about to respond to the ticket, but noticed that it had been deleted (probably because of the OTRS received tag which says that the "permission was insufficient"). I think the template is intended only for cases where we need additional information from the copyright holder, otherwise {{OTRS pending}} is probably more appropriate. I've restored the image with the correct permission now, although I can't see why the user's self-license wasn't enough in the first place... :S Jafeluv (talk) 23:21, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, well, I noticed that images with "-received" will be kept longer than with "-pending". Maybe we should adjust it or create a new one. Trijnsteltalk 20:58, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

IP block

Hi Trijnstel. I'm not experienced with IP blocks. I blocked this IP for a month for spamming. You blocked this same IP in September as a proxie IP. Is my 1 month block ok, or should the block be longer/shorter/done differently? Thanks for your time. INeverCry 02:12, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Simply my 0.02. I tend to escalate blocks (and one reason I may place a small block is as a marker for the future). However I do not recall ever blocking an IP for more than a year - the internet is a transient place. Oddly or otherwise I have very very rarely found myself reblocking open proxies for example - odd but true. Either way further blocks can always be placed and I prefer to use short blocks to start with at least.
This IP is obviously a comment bot source IP (To Trijnstel - a global block looks sensible!).
Google is your friend (sometimes) so check this search. Assuming you get the same answer as me this is a highly abused IP. Personally I would block for a year (my max for an IP). I'd even be tempted to hard block it - nothing of any value is likely to come from it IMHO. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:44, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Short reply as I'm busy right now: is   g-blocked for 1 month and for 6 months (both anon-only). Trijnsteltalk 10:05, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I've re-blocked the IP for 6 months. Also thanks to Herby for the google search advice. INeverCry 17:49, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
