Hello. How are you? According to the recommendation expressed in Commons:Checkusers/Howto, I would like to know your opinion about a possible request for checkuser. As you already know, with the resignations of two checkusers, Commons has now only five checkusers - what I don't consider a comfortable number. For this, I would like to help as a checkuser here. I have experience with the tool (and with the administrative tools) and think that I could be helpful in this team. For these reasons, I would like your opinion. Happy holidays and thanks in advance, Érico (msg) 07:07, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

@Érico: Thanks for your offer to help as a CU here! Since we lost Martin H. and Tiptoety as CU lately, we could definitely use more CUs imho. You are trusted, an active Commons admin and an experienced ptwiki CU afaics. I haven't see many CU requests from you on Commons, though. Do you intend to just handle requests from others then? Or cross-wiki checks? Not saying it's a bad thing, just curious.   Will point the other Commons CUs to this note, so they could give their opinion too, if they wish. Trijnsteltalk 17:42, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
I don't know Érico at all -- that's not a negative -- in fact, it's probably a positive, because many of the people I know well on Commons are bad actors -- that's just part of being a very active Admin. Based on his record and being a CU on WP:PT, I could vote for him. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 18:09, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
Per Jim, the fact that Érico is very active and I didn't know about his work before is a strong support for me. --Krd 19:54, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
I would support this as well. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:56, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
@Trijnstel, Jameslwoodward, Krd, Magog the Ogre: Thanks for your opinions. I didn't answer before because I was on vacation. Trijnstel, is true that I make few CU requests here, but I see many IPs and spammers that could be checked. Regarding to my intentions as CU (if approved), obviously that I intend to deal with requests, emergencial requests and regular requests from CUs of others wikis. In Portuguese Wikipedia, for example, I deal with LTAs and spammers (if considered important, see CheckUser statistics of Anyway, I will open a RFCU today. Thanks again.   Érico (msg) 21:05, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

Photographs from davecskatingphoto.comEdit

Excuse me Trijnstel, You seems to familiar with Photographs from as your uploads, is it ok to upload the photos like this? (seems to many other users did it so) --Puramyun31 (talk) 14:14, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

@Puramyun31 - Apologies for the delay, but yeah, that's fine (as long as you mention the license + OTRS ticket of course). Trijnsteltalk 10:38, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your answer. :-)--Puramyun31 (talk) 11:31, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Image/description spambotsEdit

Hi Trijnstel. Have a look at these guys:

Herby and I were dealing with these new spambots before he went on break. The NTSAMR spambots are few and far between now. The image/description spambots have taken their place. Unfortunately I can't run CU and see other spambots on the ranges these guys are on. The ones above are just from a couple day's worth of patrolling uncategorized images from mid-September. I've blocked a hundred or more in the last month. Are you familiar with these? They upload from 1 to 3 stock promotional images with spammed descriptions (promotional language, links, etc). They're hitting Commons at a steady rate of at least 7 or 8 per day. Herby was trying to use the spam blacklist, but that wasn't working very well (here's two other spambots I spoke to Herby about: [1]. I just wanted to keep you up to date on our spambot situation on Commons, especially since these new ones have really started to increase in numbers in the past few months. lNeverCry 04:00, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi INeveryCry. Thanks for your note. Good to know about these spambots; I wasn't familiar with these. I ran a few checks and blocked a bunch.
All spambots come from IPs based in Nigeria. IP blocks aren't useful anymore, though, since they switch frequently. Trijnsteltalk 18:31, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Health supplement spambotsEdit

Hi Trijnstel. I've got a new set of spambots that've been hitting Commons over the past week or so spamming supplement websites. Here's the latest: Abbylola154. This spambot was spamming \supplementlab\.org\b. This is one of 14 related spam sites I've added to the blacklist here under the heading of # Fitness products spamming. Perhaps we're lucky enough that they're coming from one webhost or proxy range? INeverCry (talk) 03:01, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Another one from today in case it helps with CU: Aleenfaab154. lNeverCry 03:43, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
Both confirmed. Sadly, they both different IP addresses from Pakistan; probably two mobile ranges. Trijnsteltalk 22:43, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
PS. There is too much collateral on both ranges to block them. Trijnsteltalk 22:46, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. That's OK. It looks like my blacklisting has dried up the run of spambots for those supplement companies. Or maybe they were only on that for a short period. Things are relatively quiet on the spam front. I'm just kicking myself that I gave up the CU tools and have no shot at getting them back. But, when you play you pay...   I'm getting more involved with COM:VIC now. It's like an easter egg hunt... lNeverCry 22:52, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
Luckily we have more than enough competent CheckUsers.   apologies for the late reply btw - I've been travelling the past days Trijnsteltalk 23:00, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
No worries about response time. You're lucky enough to be young and able to travel, and so I hope you enjoy that to the fullest. I'm disabled, and I rarely leave the computer chair, so I've got all the time in the world to waste on chasing socks and spammers (what's time for if not wasting it?  ). I can bug Magog and Elcobbola when I need to, but most of the time I can handle socks and spammers pretty easily on my own. I can do plenty with recent changes, abuse filters, new pages, etc. You just have to know where to look. lNeverCry 03:50, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
