Hi, I doubt very much that this image, used on the Portuguese Wikipedia, is Category:Alfred Agache (urbanist). It may be Creator:Alfred Agache, but we don't even know his first name. Could you help please? Regards, Yann (talk) 09:02, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

Problema con el script de QIC cuando falta barra vertical

Hola Photographer, ¿qué tal?

Mira, me he dado cuenta de un pequeño fallo del script. Normalmente los que nominamos imágenes en QIC incluímos una barra vertical en el texto donde se suele dejar el review detrás. ¡Pero algunos no la incluyen! En tal caso, después de una promoción con el script no se ve el texto introducido sino simplemente Promotion {{{2}}}

Lo puedes ver en las nominaciones de Peulle del 18 de mayo, por ejemplo.

¿Crees que el script podría introducir en estos casos la barra vertical necesaria?

Saludos, --Basotxerri (talk) 16:12, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

--The Photographer 19:44, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
De acuerdo, lo entiendo. Muchos saludos, --Basotxerri (talk) 20:31, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

SVG font issue

Hi, I found your name in the File:Periodic table large.svg updates.

Recently, I have updated the svg into the 2018 enwiki color set (more here). Also I made some improvements (like atomic mass checks).

However, by using inkscape, it looks like the fonts are messed up (wrong family, serifs even). I would like to have sans-serif fonts again. Could you take a look & an edit to make it more beautiful again? Thanks. -DePiep (talk) 15:42, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Street photography

Hi The Photographer. I was wondering, given that you've uploaded quite a bit of your street photography photos, what are your views on street photography? Specifically the ethics of it and whether uploading on Commons is acceptable? Hiàn (talk) 00:48, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Hiàn Thanks for your question, This is a mainly legal matter, ethics is something of your own and depends on each person, but legality must be respected. In some places it is not allowed to take pictures of streets, for example, some night lights of Paris. In other places it is not allowed to take pictures of people. Regardless of the country, it is always good to ask permission to the people, in case of being children, to ask permission to their legal representative. Street photography is an essential part of human culture and should be photographed but respecting the legality of each region of each country. --Photographer 02:08, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick response and for sharing your views on the matter. I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Hiàn (talk) 02:13, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Hard disc crash

They say there are only two kinds of people. Those who don't use backup software and are going to lose data, and those who have lost data and now use backup software. I have had two discs die on me. The first I lost the photos, though nearly all of them were already processed and uploaded elsewhere. The second I lost nothing other than time and the cost of a replacement. I recommend CrashPlan if you can afford the $10 a month. It used to be $5 a month for home edition but they stopped doing that and just have the business version now. I have about 1.5TB of data backed up. When I compared to some others I chose CrashPlan because:

  • They have no limit on how much you can backup; other plans had low limits and got expensive.
  • If you delete a file, they keep it; others deleted the file from backup after a short period. So if you accidentally delete your 2017 photos and only discover this a month later, you can still get them.
  • If you move files from one disc to another disc, then it doesn't cause the entire data to be backed up again. They upload in blocks with checksum identifiers, so they can spot if a file is already backed up but was somewhere else before. Other backup systems are dumb and would cause a whole lot of extra backup (and storage cost) if you move files. I keep this year's raw files on my SSD and move them onto my larger HD at the end of the year. So this scenario is common for me.
  • I can configure which files/folders get backed up so that the software doesn't keep backing up temporary files, etc, or files I can afford to lose (like downloaded installation programs)
  • I can backup to my local NAS drive too (though this required some undocumented scripts).
  • It is "set and forget". I don't need to remember to backup.

-- Colin (talk) 08:46, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

I can't find what this is about, but you can also buy a Blu-ray writer with 50 discs (50 times 25GB, 1.25TB) for slightly less than $120. Even cheaper per gigabyte (but more hassle) is an Ultrium drive. Affordable drives are only secondhand, an LTO-5 drive (1.5TB per tape) would start at about $300, $23 per 1.5TB tape. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:51, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
Blu-ray discs aren't really an option. Manually copying files onto 50 discs isn't a backup strategy. Tape might be an option if you are being paid to spend your hours and money being an IT support engineer. If you'd rather be a photographer who doesn't worry about losing a hard disc any more, then making it all someone else's problem is very attractive. Cloud also solves the off-site issue. It does need reasonably fast broadband upload speeds and the initial backup can take weeks, but after that it is no longer a worry. You just need to be creating less data per day than you can upload per day! -- Colin (talk) 16:09, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
Leave it to The Photographer to decide what is and isn't an option. Occasionally filling a Blu-ray with all the photosets you made recently is a backup strategy. And if you fail your monthly payment, you won't lose your data, because there is no monthly payment. If your cloud service goes bankrupt, you won't lose your data, because there is no cloud service. Tape is only for people who create many terabytes of data per year. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:21, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
Thank you Colin and Alexis Jazz for the recommendations, both valid and for taking the time necessary to think and write here some options which I will read in detail and take into account. I remember losing many photos on my personal DVD collection a few years ago, anything physical is infallible, however, I have thought that it is better to have things in several places and not just a option and I am open to all options. At the moment, I can not pay for a service in the cloud, so I'm using multiple google drive free accounts to store RAW files, however, it's a methodically slow process. I also have my photos in mega(called also megaupload) and Droopbox. There are many online options and most of the FP images are in the Commons Archive. This is a topic that I had talked to User:Poco a poco in the past. A NAS drive with redundant hard drives seems to be the most sensible and expensive option, however, I really like the idea of having a BluRays library with names tagged close to my library of movies and books. --Photographer 01:52, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
A combination is always an option, probably even the best option. When you buy optical discs, always buy quality. Brands like Verbatim, Sony and Philips. Some budget brands may result in discs with a low error rate right after burning the disc, but degrade much faster when stored away for some time. What actually matters is the media code, for some examples see https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia. Sometimes a budget brand actually uses high quality media and occasionally a reputable brand may use so-so quality media. Testing your media every year or so also can't hurt, if it appears to be degrading a lot you could burn the contents to another disc before the first one becomes unreadable. Always store media in the dark and preferably at a reasonably stable temperature.
For tape archiving, there are also services that can create tapes for you like http://www.salonrentals.com/archie-the-lto-backup-service/. (no personal experience, I just googled them as an example) Considering you should never need to retrieve anything from a tape unless something has gone wrong, it could be worth considering. Depending on how much data you have, an older generation tape drive could also be worth considering. LTO-2 (200GB) drives can be found for $25, LTO-3 (400GB) about $60. (SCSI controller would cost another $10 or so) But as I said, it's more hassle and requires more technical knowledge. Certainly not for everyone, burning discs is much easier.
One more option is simply an external drive. A 2.5" 5TB USB 3.0 drive is $110 nowadays. For long-term storage, discs or tape are generally preferred, but as a backup it's possible.
The downside of a NAS drive could be that if lightning strikes, it may destroy your computer and NAS at the same time. Or if a virus destroys your data, it may also destroy the data on the NAS. Or if you get robbed (God forbid), they may steal both your computer and NAS. No robber steals Blu-ray discs without movies on them. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 03:30, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
I can only say what works for me, with possibly similar requirements wrt quantity of data to you. If you want speculation and opinions of other options then there's a whole internet of reviews and articles. The NAS drive has the advantage of much speedier restore (and initial backup) in the event of failure. I was able to recover images quickly, but a cloud-only solution would still work. I originally bought the NAS for backup and also to run the server and host music for my Squeezebox. When I look at NAS now, I see the price has gone up a lot, which is a shame. All serious backup strategies recognise the need for off-site backup, which is hassle and possibly 2x the work for physical medial like disc and tape. A local NAS won't help if you are affected by some ransomware, which corrupts any networked drive. Serious backup is about more than manually copying files onto another media. It does require automation: it should handle you reworking an image from 2017 without you having to remember to back that up along with your Jan2019 files. It should handle versions too, so data that gets corrupted can be rewound back to when it was good. There are articles on CrashPlan's site and elsewhere about the limitations of a DIY approach. Let me assume that since you are trying to get data off the failed hard disc, that your existing backup strategy didn't work. I appreciate there's an ongoing cost to cloud, though nothing upfront, and the automation and making it a problem for experts to handle, is imo worth paying for if you can. Eventually, you can see with Lightroom's cloud version, that we'll all be uploading our photos from camera to cloud and no need for big local hard discs at all. -- Colin (talk) 09:05, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Thank you very much to both of you for your recommendations, I am going to study them carefully, for the moment I am not closed to only one alternative. At the moment, I'm trying to upload RAW files to commons, as much as possible. --Photographer 20:33, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
I just read in Colin's response you are trying to recover data from a failed hard drive. How exactly did it fail? I may be able to offer some suggestions for recovery. (though recovery is not always possible or cost-effective) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:20, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
Alexis Jazz thanks for your question I was manufacturing a hermetic box to open it and try to repair/clean it, however, this technique did not work, however, I still use this box to clean my yashica mat 124g --Photographer 21:39, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
You already opened it? That's one thing I would never recommend. Depending on what happened there would be a few things to try, but if you already opened it, either you're an expert and the drive is simply unsalvageable or you may have ruined it when you opened it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:47, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
Alexis Jazz Yes it was opened, It was a recommendation from a trusted friend expert in install software and repair windows --Photographer 21:54, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
I hope that wasn't his first suggestion, because that would likely be very bad advice. Opening a drive would really be a last-ditch effort imho. But what's done is done. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:53, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
Alexis Jazz Yes its better not to talk about it --Photographer 22:55, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

Any chance you could upload a PNG with the detail on the hands already brought out that I can restore from? I just don't have the software to get the detail up. Just upload it over File:Abfertigen einer Meldung durch Brieftauben - CH-BAR - 3240471 - restoration.png Adam Cuerden (talk) 01:57, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Dear Adam Cuerden, thanks for write me, the version used was overwrite, however, I rollbacked the changes done by User:Swiss Federal Archives because it was a very small and inferior version uploaded, finally, you will find the version here (File:Abfertigen einer Meldung durch Brieftauben - CH-BAR - 3240471.tif). You can edit it using GIMP, try perform a restore using this format because TIFF has more image information to recover. Let me know if you can do it by your self --Photographer 02:16, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
The trouble is I did use that version, but you found information in the hand that I'm not able to pull out. I've been trying to today, going back to the original file and playing with curves - I think some information on the lower end of the negative is being dumped by my editing software. Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:14, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
Adam Cuerden what I can tell you is that Photoshop and lightroom are better software soo far than gimp and darktable. Beleave me I work with gimp for more than 10 years until finally I get tired of using so many hours to do something that in photoshop is much faster, you could try the standalone 30 days trial.
