Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Copyright status of File:PrirodneNauke.svg

While I would have perfered to keep the file LGPL, like the orginal PNG images, File:Nuvola apps edu mathematics-p.svg was updated to GPL so I was forced to upgrade.

The LGPL allows this, see: [1].

File cropping

Dear Beao, I'm not sure if you are a human. You process many files within less minutes. Work you with light velocity? But i have another note. In my opinion the Cropbot can crop pictures losslessly, but your files are not losslessly cropped. Give it therefore a reason? Sure, left and up of the picture are 8 pixels (with color subsampling 16 pixels) steps, but in the case above the crop was tighter as necessary. I don't know the useability of the Cropbot, I use Jpegcrop. This program shows a grid and can enlarge the picture, so that I can precisely crop with the known limiting of 8 respectively 16 pixels. Hey there Beao, I just had a few questions regarding the image you uploaded at File:Glee title card.svg. It appears that you uploaded the image as an SVG image, however, a title card screenshot isn't presented as such in an episode's video container, which indicates to me that you copied the actual title card by creating an SVG to look much like the actual title card that can be seen near the beginning of all the episodes. The technique you used is fantastic, and I praise you for the work you did with the image. However, when comparing an actual 720p screenshot from an episode with the one you uploaded, the SVG version seems more zoomed-in with the glee typeface against the black background. If you wouldn't mind uploading a new version that more accurately depicts the show's title card, it would be much appreciated. Otherwise, I'll just make my own version and upload it myself. Hi Beao, just wanted to let you know (in case you didn't) that if you crop a picture with one (or more) "Crop for Wikidata" templates, they all will be deleted when you do a crop. Cropping of images

Same thing for File:DE CAUNES EMMA-24X30-2005.jpg. There has been long discussions about the Studio Harcourt images and the consensus was that the watermark can be considered a signature and should be kept ; alternative versions can be uploaded as separate files. Please do not overwrite the images.

Also cropping, while sometimes the only way, cropping is a fairly poor way of removing watermarks − see for example File:AZEMA Sabine H-24x30-1996-withoutWatermark.jpg vs File:AZEMA Sabine H-24x30-1996.jpg

Please cease cropping until you checked and fixed all previous overwrites.

A watermark generally can't be cropped, it needs to be edited out. You are confusing watermarks with legends at the bottom of images. Enhancing999 (talk) 16:41, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

 Done, I restored my original draw. This art of mine (with my signature) was published in issue 17 (2013) of the Irish magazine, The Archive (Journal of the Cork Folklore Project) (Page 12, in the article by Dr Jenny Butler, "Images of Animals and Darkness - Beliefs connected to nocturnal animals"). Therefore, as it is an authorial work, already published and made available here on Commons, I would return it to its original form, and I hope for your understanding, especially given my poor English.
