Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi, the deletion request was raised to present and discuss the issues with the image, and look for a solution (there might have been none). In this case, the presence of Gonzo, a copyrighted character, would prove an impediment for re-users to use for commercial purposes (CTW can sue if they choose to do so). That said, the photograph is a valuable source for a frontal portrait of Dave Goelz. I cropped the image to readily show what can be done to retain your work while complying with the rules set in this project. I harbour no intent to offend. No offense taken. I was just confused since it appeared a solution had been found (cropping out the copywritten character) and leaving the free part of the image, yet there was still a deletion request. The presented solution is quite acceptable. --McDoobAU93 16:12, 8 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
