Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

"File:GabbroRockCreek2.jpg" edit

Hi Wilson, I removed the cat Igneous rocks from the file:GabbroRockCreek2.jpg, as it already is in the cat Gabbro samples, which is an undercat of Gabbro, which is an undercat of Igneous rocks. I noticed you changed it back again, but as I found it is best to place files only in very specific subcats and leave the main cats empty, I request you to undo this again. Geological Monuments of India edit

Dear Mr Wilson,

I have seen some nice photos of Geology of Chennai posted by you. I am now writing articles in Wikipedia on Geological Monuments of India. The offically declared (by GSI) monuments are 26 numbers spread all over India; ten of them in Rajasthan alone, four in Karnataka and three each Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.I have already posted articles in wikipedia on St. Mary's Islands, Karnataka on Columnar Basalts, Borra Caves, Bugle Rock, Natural Arch, Tirumala hills, and Lonar Lake. I am in the process of finalising the article on Charnockite, St. Thomas Mount in Chennai, and Peninsular Gneiss in Bangalore, Karnataka. In case you have some photos of these geological formations taken at the locations mentioned, would it be possible for you to upload them on Wikicommons for use in articles. If you have covered the Geology of Rajasthan, some photos of the same would also be useful. The web address where you can see the list of National Geological Monumnets of India is at http://www.gsi.gov.in/geotour/geofrm2.htm, Geological Monuments of India. It would be nice if you give me a reply. Thank you.--Nvvchar (talk) 06:59, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unidentified cat edit

Hello Wilson,
File:GorgonianHoldfastMiocene.JPG and File:Syringoporid.jpg cannot stay directly under Category:Cnidaria. That would mean that they represent all the Cnidaria group (See the schema File:Cnidaria medusa n polyp.png that does). Your pictures should be in a species category (or in none if they are referenced in an article: see article/category war) or in an "Unidentified XX" category. Don't take it badly (I also have plenty of files in those cat ;-)), Unidentified only means that the species is unknown. Which is really the case for your 2 pictures. Some contributors look inside those categories and try to identify those pictures.

By the way, I moved File:GorgonianHoldfastMiocene.JPG to Category:Unidentified Gorgonacea but could you help me with File:Syringoporid.jpg ? What is a Syringoporid ? Is it a taxon ?
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 06:19, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Liné1 -- I would think that images inside Cnidaria would not "represent all the Cnidaria group" but simply be examples. Nevertheless, I have few opinions about categories so please do what you need to do for your classification system. Syringoporid corals are in the Family Syringoporidae of the Order Tabulata. Good luck with your work! Wilson44691 (talk) 09:39, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Brachiopod edit

Hi, Wilson44691, would you have time to look at Brachiopod. I've done the first pass through the main content, and will look again in a week to see if I see errors, poor phrasing, etc. Then I'll use a couple of tools to check URLs and DABs. Finally I'd write the lead - that way it is sure to match the main text. ---- Philcha (talk) 18:48, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sure, Philcha -- I'll look over it this evening. I've been watching it over the past few weeks and have had no problems at all with most changes. Wilson44691 (talk) 23:40, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I went over the first half and made several small copy-edits. Minor issues I didn't touch you can think about: (1) The objection by some paleontologists and biologists to the "dorsal" and "ventral" terms for the valves is usually because in life the pedunculate brachiopods can have either valve "up"; (2) I wouldn't say, "The fossil brachiopod genera have great diversity but only a few skeletal characteristics ..."; the brachiopod Treatise volumes have many, many pages of skeletal term definitions. I'll get to the second half later. I think it is a good article that is much better than it was a few months ago.Wilson44691 (talk) 01:23, 10 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

FOP problems edit

Professor Wilson:
I just posted   Delete at Commons:Deletion requests/File:TallinnWarMemorial2009.JPG. When I see a problem file nominated for deletion, I often look at the uploader's other work to see if there are problems -- while this certainly doesn't feel good to you, it is a way to root out systematic issues. Could I suggest that you take a hard look at your images of recent buildings and sculpture from Argentina, the UK (only the murals), Estonia, Lithuania, and Russia? I think you will want to tag a number of them with Copyvio. If it's any small comfort, a side benefit of doing this was that I had to research FOP in the Bahamas and add that section to the Commons article on FOP. As you will see, you're OK there. . . . . Hello, Wilson44691!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Juniperus occidentalis half-dead.JPG edit

Thanks for the note - I had looked at the pic closely; the foliage at the top right is clearly attached to the branch of the "dead" tree (so it still has living wood round the rear side), and for confirmation, the front side of the trunk and the top left branch still have some bark remaining, which is clearly juniper bark from its 'stringy' character, quite unlike Pinus flexilis bark. I'm familiar with both species, have studied them in the Sierra Nevada. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 09:39, 21 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ah, that is convincing, especially that bit of bark. Thanks for the correction! Wilson44691 (talk) 09:47, 21 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading your geology photos edit

I have enjoyed looking at your geological photos. They are a very nice collection and Wikipedia is much richer for having them. As a contributor to Wikipedia geology articles, I know that I shall regularly check them to see if I can include them in any articles. Thanks for the wonderful resource. I have added various categories to some of the geology photos, which I hope will help to widen their accessibility. GeoWriter (talk) 15:33, 4 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Statue edit

Hi. Per the note I left on the relevant talk page, I think there is some confusion about which of the (several) Aodh Ó Domhnaill's is represented in that statue. You've added it to various articles about Aodh Rua Ó Dónaill (1572-1602). But the base of the statue states "1427-1505". Either Donegal County Council, and the Flight of the Earls commemoration people, and the artist all get it very (very) wrong, or you've misascribed this image to the wrong man. I believe the man depicted in the statue is an ancestor. Names (and personal traits like red hair) are commonly handed down. Dates and years of birth are less flexible. Guliolopez (talk) 20:18, 20 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yikes. Thanks! I'm very certain the error comes from my jet-lagged mind. I'm on it! Wilson44691 (talk) 21:07, 20 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Autopatrol given edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you.
