German toponyms edit

Hi, do you need cartographic assistance in re-creating the map about that topic? This map here is okay in pinpointing the few council seats of Suevo, but according to this map here, thousands of placenames in Northern Portugal have a germanic origin; but no further details can be determined in that crowd, even at second and third glance. My suggestions:

  • If each pinpoint represents the number of places indicated, I suggest using a choropleth map based on a roughly determined total number of places, per administrative districts
  • If each pinpoint represents a single entry of a list, sorted by importance, I suggest to cut all places below the importance threshold of 99, at the least
  • If each pinpoint represents a single entry of an unsorted list, I suggest to just use small dots instead of pins, because the numbers in the bubbles have simply no meaning but obscure everything.

So, do you still have the mapping data you used? --Enyavar (talk) 09:57, 26 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Enyavar: Hello, and thank you for the help, each dot on the map represents a village with a name of Germanic origin. The map comes from Wikivoyages (numbers from 1 to 99), and which gives an automatic location according to the number of Wikidata. It is not very beautiful, but gives an idea of the geographical distribution of these places (cities and villages), because there must be nearly 500 points so the map is whatever we do illegible. That data source is good to know. Yes, the map is illegible, but you can do something: Instead of including up the meaningless numbers, use a smaller dot to represent the data. For example, don't use a marker like   and instead use   to mark your spots: the distribution pattern should become much more clear. The numbers of each location are only important if you include a map key that has the names of all 500 places linked to each number. All the best, --Enyavar (talk) 11:15, 27 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Enyavar: Hello, the idea is good but it's impossible Xicodaponte (talk) 11:59, 28 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Okay done, as soon as impossible. ;-) --Enyavar (talk) 14:09, 28 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Enyavar: Good job, but your card is incomplete. Data following this link:[1] Xicodaponte (talk) 21:23, 2 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
