This page serves as a place for the first board election of the Commons Photographers User Group. Please see the talk page for a rough estimate of the time commitment needed as a board member.

Suggested roles and responsibilities edit

Board members elected to the positions below will initially serve for the duration of one year.

CHAIR

  • Represents the organization (positioning the organization towards third parties will require membership surveys)
  • Ensures that all board members are engaged and that the board as a whole is effective in its work
  • Organizes quarterly board meetings

VICE-CHAIR

  • Supports the chair in her/his duties
  • Stands in for other board members whenever needed and appropriate

TREASURER

  • Manages the financial affairs of the organization
  • Provides financial information to support decisionmaking

SECRETARY

  • Prepares and submits reports, e.g. annual reports
  • Takes minutes at board meetings and publishes those minutes as appropriate
  • Keeps the international Wikimedia community informed about status and work of the user group (e.g. on Wikimedia-l)

MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR

  • Keeps the membership list up to date
  • Greets new members

EVENTS COORDINATOR

  • Ensures that the user group conducts 2–4 virtual meetings each year
  • Identifies and invites speakers for virtual meetings
  • Informs members about upcoming meetings

Timeline for elections edit

  • November 1 – November 14: User group members comment on the above list of roles and responsibilities
  • November 15 – November 28: User group members declare their interest in running for one of the above roles
  • December 1 – December 17: User group members vote for the different candidates
  • December 20: Confirmation and announcement of election results

  • About yourself: I am a 38 year old professional photographer based in Accra, Ghana.I have been with the Wikimedia movement for about 8 years and I placed 9th on Wiki Loves Africa photo competition 2019. I love to edit and participate more in Wikimedia activities both online and offline. Wikimedia commons have been my home and favorite among all the Wikimedia sister projects.
  • Candidate statement: If I am considered for this position, I will make sure I bring more photographers to the group by making sure it is up to date with active members. Engage them by listening to their concerns and also make them feel at home.

  • Position you run for: Treasurer
  • About yourself: I am Irvin Sto. Tomas, 38, from the Philippines. Aside from Wikipedia, I am also an active contributor on Wikimedia Commons. Among the activities and projects I have organized in the Philippines are photography contests and photo walks namely Wiki Takes the City in (Naga, 2012) and (Rinconada District, 2015/16), Wiki Loves Monuments PH (2018-2020) and became a volunteer in organizing the Wiki Loves Earth PH (2018-2020), Wiki Loves Love/Folklore PH, and Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photographs PH (2020).
  • Candidate statement: I have an experience doing financial reporting as a rapid grantee, and being the treasurer of PhilWiki Community. I would like to extend any help to the user group if given a chance.

  • About yourself: … I am an electronics engineer, developing new gadgets (including photography camera hacking and sound-related stuff) is my passion. Photography was the main reason for me to join the Wiki movement. Currently, I am a member of the Affiliations Committee (AffCom), I am involved in organising conferences, meetups, GLAM, online photography competitions like Wiki Love Monuments, Wikipedia Asian Month, etc. I was the organiser of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in India and I am very happy India was the winner. I also contribute to various like-minded projects to the Wikimedia movement, such as ‘Common Voice’ by Mozilla. Raspberry Pi Foundation (JAM organizer), OpenCon, and Internet Archive.   • About yourself: I started contributing to Commons in 2011 and added some thousand pictures since then. My main interest is sports photography. I've been a member of the board of Wikimedia Austria for a few years and I am member of the Commons Expert Group of Wikimedia Austria.

  • About yourself: I'm a German American living in Chico, a small university town in rural California. About ten years ago, I rediscovered my love for photography and became more active on Commons. I love being outdoors and spend most of my free time on capturing the beauty of nature and wildflife here in Northern California. In my day job, I run a nonprofit dedicated to improving Wikipedia's content quality and editor diversity by encouraging and empowering people from academic and cultural institutions to share their knowledge with others.
  • Candidate statement: I'm very passionate about the idea of sharing photos under a free license. That's why I'm motivated to help moving this user group to the next level. In a world where visuals on the web play a more important role than ever, I'm imagening this group to play a bigger role in the Wikimedia universe.

  • About yourself: I am a Nigerian living in Abuja. I am a photography enthusiast and first started contributing on Wikipedia until i discovered Commons where i have since become an active contributor. I have strong interests in Landscape and scenery photography as well as Travel and cultural photography. I also spend a lot of my time organising photo tours and walks across distant locations (the recent being Institutions of higher learning across states in Nigeria. Here are some Links: 1,2,3)
  • Candidate statement:I am passionate about pictures and related media, their ability to tell stories, the stories that go into taking/creating them and how they are a universally understood language. If, elected, We will have as many group meetings as are possible annually with a focus on exploring new and existing concepts, Interaction with experienced resource persons with the aim to build capacity and ensure all members of the UG are carried along. I am convinced that if any project will unify the free knowledge movement, it will be Wikimedia Commons. It is my desire to contribute to making this a reality.
