Glass plate negatives

Hi

I recently purchased a collection of glass plate negatives at auction. The photos were taken between 1880 and 1898. Many of the photos are of very interesting subjects in the United States. (Examples - H.H. Holmes House, the White House, Harvard, the Alamo)

Are these photos outside of the copyright time period and can I upload them? Do I own the copyright now that I purchased the photos, or does that copyright still belong to the person who originally took them (i.e., their estate)

Ownership of the copyright is not related to ownership of the physical item. The person who took the photos still holds the copyright. But if they were published in the United States before 1923, the copyright has probably expired (see {{PD-1923}}). Commons:Hirtle chart is pretty helpful in these cases. Does it seem if they were likely published? You probably know more about the probability of that in that day and given what else you know about them then I do. If they were not published, and they're anonymous, then they have 120 years from creation, so anything from 1895 or earlier would be PD. This is the article subjects new headshot and he has written permission to use the photo. I'm struggling to find how to update the license.

"Written permission to use the photo" is not quite enough. We need a sufficiently free license (specifically, one that allows commercial use and derivatives). Also, the subject of a photo usually does not own the copyright, the photographer does. In most countries, the subject would only own the copyright if it was explicitly transferred in writing. In any case, see COM:OTRS for how to send in such permission; note that the copyright holder must specifically choose a license. - Jmabel ! talk 03:35, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Searching within commons

I am positive this question has been asked before but apparently I am incapable of wording it sufficiently to find it, and every tool I've found is beyond my limited understanding. Downloading map file

I am having trouble downloading the highest res file for File:Ducato_di_Savoia_e_stati_limitrofi.jpg. I use the download button,and It opens in a browser window, but never downloads. Is there something obvious I am doing wrong?

Djmladen, there have been some intermittent errors the past week with the servers, which sometimes means image files don't load. Just try again, it worked ok for me. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:36, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

King David Hotel terrorist attack

I was present at the 1946 attack on the King David Hotel just a short distance away and I took many photographs of the incident. You are welcome to use these if you wish. They show many views of the damage also shots of the empty streets after the curfew was imposed. I was RAF attached to the Forces Broadcasting Unit as a studio conreoller. Wikilink issue

Adding [[Category:Venezia Santa Lucia train station]] is done to place the page into that category. Adding |Venezia Santa Lucia railway station specifies that the sort string determining where the page appears in listings of the category. Wilfrid Israel Posters - Message from Motopark to ophirbaer

Hello, I received a message from Motopark regarding 3 entries I made, back in 2012. The pictures of the 3 posters I entered were apparently put on Commons:Speedy Deletion requests. Not being familiar with the software and the procedure, I tried to remove it from the Speedy Deletion category, but apparently, I only caused it to to the Deletion request department. This is what I see now for the Hebrew version poster.

"File:Wilfrid Poster - Hebrew - Updated.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry."

Bottom Line: I don't know how and where to place my objection for the deletion (Speedy or Regular). As suggested by Motopark, I added some categories. Those pictures should NOT be deleted. The original painting is clearly in the public domain, as the painter has been dead for several hundred years. The photographic reproduction of the painting may be protected by copyright in the UK, and according to the page you link to, the National Trust for Scotland is apparently claiming to hold copyright. Commons policy is to ignore such claims. This of course has no impact on the actual legal situation, and users are responsible for their own uploads. Be careful to crop out the picture frame, which is not a 2D object and not covered by PD-art. It's a pity that the photograph is so poor, in particular that it's not straight and doesn't even contain the complete painting. --rimshot^talk 22:04, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Image Permission

I'm the secretary of an organisation, and uploaded our organisation's logo but as I didn't add permissions it was deleted. How do I add the permission when we are the owner? Is it a case of simply asserting ownership? --Petechilcott (talk) 21:42, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Can I see the usage of all my files in a single page?

I know that I can see the usage of every single file in the related description page, but I would like to know if there is a page that lists all my files ordered by the number of times they are used in other wikis, i.e. a page where I can see what files are most used. Jmabel: At the bottom, you'll see both "total image uses" and "distinct images used". The figures for the individual projects add up to equal "total image uses". If you select "Show details", you get a breakdown for each image ordered by the number of times they are used, which is what Forna asked for (if I understood correctly). —LX (talk, contribs) 21:41, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

The only possibility for uploading that to Commons is if the copyright holder agrees to release it under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes, and that's probably not going to happen. You may be able to upload it locally to the Russian Wikipedia project if their rules allow it. If you have questions about that, ru:Википедия:Форум/Вопросы is probably the place to go. Image Copyright Issues

Wiki-Folks,

I'm putting together my first Wiki entry and I'm having difficulty understanding how to upload images with an appropriate copyright.

The entry is a bio on my grandfather, who was an artist and died in 1969. I wish to upload an image of him and several of his works. The image of my grandfather has been used for years to portray him, and the images of his work are of works that are owned either by myself or other members of my family who have given me permission to use them.

Simply stated, what is the appropriate copyright status under which I should upload this pictures?

"[h]as been used for years to portray him" says nothing about copyright status. There are a series of questions that are going to need to be answered to sort that out. For starters, who took the picture and in what country?
If he died in 1969, then in almost certainly all works of his that were copyrighted at the time of his death remain copyrighted. Ownership of physical works is irrelevant to intellectual property rights: the question is who was the heir to his intellectual property rights (possibly by now it may be relevant to ask "and who is that person's living heir")? That is the person who needs to give permission. If it is you, then you can just use the {{Heirs-license}} template, providing the license you want to grant as a parameter. If it is someone else, they will have to grant a license via the process described in COM:OTRS. NOTE that on Commons, pretty much the most restrictive license we allow is {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}: you must allow free reuse, including commercial re-use, and people must be allowed to make derivatives. On the other hand, you can require a credit of your choosing, and can require that it be indicated that the use is on the basis of a Cc-by-sa-4.0 license.

Question on including images with copyright releases

I requested and received permission to use images owned by a company. The company e-mailed "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" with copyright releases, attached images, and source URLs (on their domain). They then received a ticket number from OTRS which they forwarded to me. I have not yet uploaded these images to the Wikimedia commons. When I do upload these images, how do I specify that there is an existing ticket for the e-mail with copyright releases? Thank you.Tale.Spin (talk) 03:45, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

If you are confident that the permission meets our requirements and you know which free license the company agreed to release their content under, you may upload the files at any time. In addition to providing the source, author and licensing information, be sure to add {{OTRS pending|year=2016|month=January|day=9}} (or whichever date the e-mail was sent) to the file description pages. It would be a good idea to mention the ticket number in the permission field of the {{information}} template. If you want to inquire about the status of the permission, see Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. Bild hochladen/Lizenz

Da ich neu hier bin, hatte ich beim Hochladen eines Bildes gedacht, dass ich auch noch nachträglich die Lizenz-Angaben ändern kann. Somit habe ich zuerst "unbekannt - aus dem Internet" als Quelle angegeben. Nun liegt mir von der Fotografin schriftlich vor, dass ich das Bild mit Angabe ihres Namens bei Wikipedia online stellen darf. Zwischenzeitlich wurde das Bild aber wegen unzureichender Lizenzangaben von einem User gelöscht.. Und ich kann das Bild aber einfach nicht mehr hochladen, da mir nun ständig die Meldung kommt, es sei bereits hochgeladen und gelöscht? -- 2 Fragen: 1. Kann ich das selbe Bild nur ein einziges mal hochladen? und 2. Kann ich für einen anderen Urheber (in diesem Fall die Fotografin) eine Common Lizenz eintragen, oder muss sie das selber machen? Scaling a very high res B&W .png file

File:Brennan_monorail.png went a bit strange when I put it through CropBot earlier, becoming quite faded and patchy. Looking closely at the original, it looks like it was scanned from newsprint at a very high resolution, but then saved as a two-colour black-and-white .png file, with the newsprint graininess becoming even more dithered as a result.

Uploading images of my sculptures that are photographs taken by people other than myself

Dear Wiki People-in-the-Know,

I was confused when I uploaded images of my sculpture. I knew that in order to upload that I must have free license permission from the photographers. I took the standard form and asked each photographer to send it by email directly to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org What I did with my copy of these forms I believe is incorrect.

I have questions about the filing process for each of my 4 uploaded images.

I cannot edit the titles of the images I uploaded of my own work - is there someone out there who could please assist me? It would involve deleting the present titles and pasting in the correct one. Lastly, is the Copyright box I checked correct for this situation? I think that it is.

We usually don't change titles (file names) unless they are basically useless or actively misleading. This is because it messes with older links and URLs, and we consider stability a higher priority than getting perfect (as against merely good) file names. However, everything else can be edited.
In general, there should be no problem with making any other appropriate edits. Just go to the relevant file page, click "Edit", and have at it. In particular, you may freely edit the descriptions.
Assuming the permissions emails have been sent as you said, you can just put {{subst:OP}} in the permissions area and get rid of the whole verbose discussion. Of course, you should still leave a photo credit, which I gather is your intention.

When you say "my existing Wiki entry" I presume you mean an article about yourself, right?
You can upload in any of a number of ways; I gather that the recommendation for beginners now is to use Special:UploadWizard.
Once the picture is uploaded en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial indicates what to do to get it into an article. The short version of that is that you typically include it by putting [[File:filename.ext|thumb|Caption]] in the wikitext. - Jmabel ! talk 17:45, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Photo in my possession

I'm writing an article about Monsignor Valerio Anzino (1832-1899). My mom found a photo of the Monsignor in a box of photos from my grandmother. My grandmother was a first cousin to Monsignor Anzino. The photo appears to have been taken in a studio in Rome in the 1880's or 1890's. Can I include this photo in my article? This might be old enough for there to be no copyright issue, even without knowing who took the picture. Are you serious that this is your own work? Obviously the date is wrong -- you can't have taken the picture 50 years after he died -- and since he is rather young in the photo, if this is your own work, then you must be at least in your 80s, which seems unlikely.
That said, if there is some basis that the picture is in the public domain or under a free license, you would typically place it in an article by the wikitext [[File:Katyayanidas Bhattacharya.jpg|thumb|Caption goes here]]. - Jmabel ! talk 17:53, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Near-duplicate image (resolved)

I'm not sure on the process for dealing with this, so am raising here for local experts to handle. I've spotted two images that are essentially the same:

The former has richer colour and a higher resolution (also uses the original language name of the painting in the filename), so seems the better to retain. Suggest merging the latter in via redirect? Consideration needs to be made for combining categories where appropriate. Any issue with how the images are used by other sites, if a redirect is applied?

New audio file upload mishap

I uploaded the file File:En-us-shift.ogg a good while back, and I've since uploaded a new, better version of it. The only problem? I'm still hearing the old, presumably cached version of the file when I play it! I tried reuploading to see if it fixes the glitch, but it still plays the old file. The new file I uploaded is there, as evidenced by the file history, but for some reason it refuses to be the "current" version of the file. The first and last version of the file are, as of this writing, playing the old version of my recording. The two in the middle are playing the new version. I've uploaded files to other MediaWiki wikis and usually only had to wait about five minutes for the new version of the file to take effect. Here, it's been hours and I still hear the old version.

If the footage is from a pre-positioned surveillance camera with no operator controls, it may be deemed ineligible for copyright protection in some jurisdictions. I don't know whether the legal situation in France is clear on this point, and it's not clear whether this camera had any operator controls. If the image is eligible for copyright protection, the copyright is likely to be held by the camera operator or whoever installed the camera. The category list is difficult to use. It searches only on exact spelling, so if the category you're looking for has a different spelling or has the words reversed, you'll never find it. As a result, there are lots of duplicates.

Case and point: I'm trying to find the category for abandoned rail lines in Ontario, Canada. Does anyone have a suggestion?

MediaViewer on gallery pages

I landed at United States presidential election maps and wanted to browse through the images in the category without having to open every single image description page. However, I was dismayed to find that MediaViewer does not seem to be available on this gallery page. There is the JavaScript "Gadget Slideshow" button in the top-right, but that functionality is quite badly implemented and difficult to use. (For example, it opens with a "Keyboard Help" window; a simple category browser should be easy enough to use that you don't need to show the user a "Keyboard Help" message when it is opened.)

Well, the Wikimedia Foundation did their best to force everyone to use the Media Viewer, and I haven't kept up with every twist in the drama, but I think it may be disabled by default for all logged-in users. There would be several reasons for that. For example, since it hides a lot of essential information like categories, other versions etc, it's pretty useless for anyone wanting to use Commons as a media repository. Since it's a read-only interface, it's also pretty useless for anyone wanting to do actual work here. Anyway, if I log out, go to that gallery and click on an image, I get the Media Viewer. Crop and upload existing work.

I would like to crop an existing image and upload it again. I've read around for about an hour but I can't seem to find any concrete answers about the conduct of me as an uploader here. This is the work in question [[1]].

I want to crop out the lower part of the picture since it doesn't meld with my intended use. I need it to be more square-shaped instead of portrait-shaped. It feels unnecessary to host the cropped image myself. It'd be more useful and more easy for other to use it if it could be found on the wikimedia commons.

What I'm wondering is what the guidelines for uploading a cropped version of an existing work are. I seem to be revisting this situation every couple of weeks and the sheer amount of potential reading material about this tend to leave me exhausted and without answers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kxxvii (talk • contribs) 14:03, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

In this case, you will certainly want to upload your cropped version to a different name. Anyone else using this in its current form should not be affected
There is a crop bot out there; I've never used it, but someone can probably help you with that.
Without the bot, you can download the full-resolution version to your own machine, crop that with any tool (e.g. MS Paint, GIMP) and upload under a new filename. Use basically the same file info, plus a statement in author about you having done a crop. Link the two images in the "other versions" fields by using {{Extracted from}} in your new page and {{Image extracted}} in the existing one. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

COM:CropTool is a very useful for this. If you enable it in your "Preferences->Gadgets", you'll get a link to it in the left bar when you're on the image page. It will let you select the region you want and instantly upload the crop as a new file. The cropped file can keep the same license etc. information as the original. Guten Morgen! Hier ist Leopold Maderbacher, wohnhaft in 2572 Kaumberg. In meinem Archiv ist eine Todesanzeige von Florian TAUBE zu finden. Meine Mutter und einige ihrer Verwandten sagten: er wäre ihr Cousin gewesen. In den Taufbüchern der umliegenden Pfarren ist aber nichts zufriedenstellendes zu finden. So weit ich aus Fotos und Erzählungen ersehen konnte, Ist Florian Taube etwa im April 1898 geboren. Wo er zuletzt gewohnt hat, ist mir nicht bekannt. Laut Todesanzeige ist F. Taube kurz vor Kriegsende im KL Mauthausen unter tragischen Umständen ums Leben gekommen. Ist in Ihren Unterlagen der Grund seiner Internierung zu finden? die ungefähre Todesursache kann vielleicht auch festgestellt werden? I'm looking foreward to uploading a photo that I took by myself. It is a photo of a book. I wander if it's legal because of the cover since it's someone else's piece of art. Can somebody help me, please?

No, that would not be legal, unless the cover is ineligible for copyright protection, its copyright has expired, or its copyright holder has agreed to publication under a free license. Taking a photo of a non-free, copyrighted book cover does not magically liberate it from its legitimate copyright holder. Correct Tag for Uploading Content from Massachusetts State Government

The Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth's office states on their Archives page that, "Those records created by Massachusetts government agencies and institutions held by the Massachusetts Archives are not copyrighted and are available for public use." I would like to upload some images and illustrations from the "National Register of Historic Places" registration form for Tewksbury Hospital. The registration form was prepared by Massachusetts Historical Commission. The completed registration form can be found at (Click the "NR" Button).
