"Join the mailing list" edit

Which mailing list? Could someone provide a link? --Eusebius (talk) 22:03, 16 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I copied content from last year's page and so now there's an email address shown. It's private apparently, so joining it would require approval (if anyone from last year's committee is still active). – Adrignola talk 01:13, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I can request access from the list administrator for everyone if we want to start using it again - what do you think? The Helpful One 14:21, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
No objections. I had requested access to the list via the interface some time ago but never heard back. I don't know if any of the administrators are actively checking for new additions. – Adrignola talk 14:31, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, there's only one list administrator at the moment, User:Kanonkas, but I can request access from him to be able to add everyone else. The Helpful One 14:38, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi all, I can add anyone to the list, please subscribe at https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/commons-poty and confirm your email address by sending me an email from your user account and I'll add you (or just let me know your email address somehow). Starting date edit

Any word on when POTY voting will begin? Jujutacular talk 16:17, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Someone will have to have access or connections to someone with access to the central notice to kick it off. We also don't have translations for the majority of the pages. – Adrignola talk 18:37, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

On going results edit

It would be a nice thing to show on going results, like in the previous contests. Alvesgaspar 12:48, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

That'd only happen with a bot, because it's impossible to do by hand. – Adrignola talk 17:23, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
not "impossible", i did an "unofficial results tracker" page for poty2008, R2 (final results were delayed for an extended period of time); but it was a hell of a lot of work, single-handed... >__<

How edit

I guess I'm dense. Can't figure out how to cast a vote. Instructions here under "the procedure" mention "click the 'Vote' button, but I don't see one. Where do I use the template? In the "Comment" field above the word "Support"? Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 00:11, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I seem to see some better instructions here. Jeez. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 00:16, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

In the Galleries select a category and then under the images there is a yellow button with the words "Click here to vote". Click that, however, it only works if you have JavaScript enabled on your browser. Ancient Apparition (talk) 02:44, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
You're not dense, I have been editing the Wiki since 2002 and am a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador and it is totally confusing to me too. Where might one even find a link to that page on the main page? One might imagine that there would be some clear link to the page with all the images and then on that page there would be buttons to select the desired picture. Or maybe some instructions on how to enter your choice via an edit. This is really a terrible interface for an organization that is trying to do everything to encourage new editors. Especially if someone who has been editing on here for almost a decade has spent 10 minutes trying to figure it out. In fact, were it not for Ancient Apparition's intervention here on the help page, I still would not have figured it out. Thanks. Saudade7 (talk) 23:06, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Voting edit

I went to the 'Nature views' page and voted for some photos using the voting buttons. Once clicked, it has shown 'Vote saved'. But when the next time I logged in, those photos again got the Voting buttons active. Again when I click, it shows 'Vote saved'. What is happening? Why it is again enabling voting for the pictures I already voted? How to get them are permanently voted ? --
Anish Viswa 13:35, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you clicked and got feedback, your vote has been saved. E.g. look here: Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2010/R1/File:Sheet_Lightning_over_Mt_Wellington.jpg. To make 101% sure your vote has been saved, look at your contributions. -- RE rillke questions? 21:33, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

As I was not aware that the voting buttons will remain active even after voting, I double voted for some photos, thinking that my vote was not captured. Will this annul my votes for those photos or affect my eligibility to vote in the final round ?--
Anish Viswa 05:36, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

No. It will be discounted from the final tally and you will be able to vote in Round 2. theMONO 00:49, 4 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

What's the use of it all? edit

What is a "good" picture? One of an object I like (very subjective and quite useless generally)? An expressive one? an impressive one? Some picture technically well done? One useful for some wikipedia? for some other purpose? what purpose? How is mankind to benefit from all this? Aren't there more important things to be done? Should I (or someone else) decide to vote: which criteria are to be considered? I'm at a loss. What's the use of it all? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Empro2 (talk • contribs)

Consider voting for a picture, commons will present to "the media" / "the press". It's the same think everywhere here on commons/ wikipedia: You have to "guess" the goal of a picture and this will create the criteria. But I have to admit: There are things that are much more important. -- RE rillke questions? 21:29, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
A beautifully composed, lit, colored and photographed image still needs to be an illustration for the encyclopedia, in my thought. A gorgeous sunset isn't enough: you have to be saying when you vote , "What article is this for?"--69.86.26.238 00:30, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I, so far, have been voting on those pictures that would make me do a double-take. Or ones that make me stare at them for a longer than usual period of time. -- OlEnglish (talk) 06:09, 4 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I would not say this vote is useless, that would be much too harsh. But when I look at the winners of previous years, and much of this years finalists, I am somewhat discontent. In my opinion, this popular vote clearly shows a bias toward easily impressing visuals, and tends to neglect the encyclopedical value of an image. Colorful, well-composed, high-resolution images with some kind of an exotic flavour seem to be the communities favourites in this vote. For example, a diagram or a press photo would hardly ever make it, no matter how much insight they would convey on their topic. But, anyway, I still enjoy this every year, although it is rather for the joy of browsing the candidates than for my concurrence with the outcome. -- Theoprakt (talk) 07:14, 14 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

well, a couple of years ago, i was toying with proposals to create different "categories of merit" in the wmc honours system; more comprehensive than VI, QI, & FP.
something like: "technical awards", "artistic", & "useful/encyclopedic"
as well as "formalizing" & putting more emphasis on the R1 category winners.
never went anywhere tho; couldn't find anyone interested in working on it with me, & it was just too much to attempt single-handed

Wikimedia Commons POTY 2010 ineligibility edit

I have been messaged that I am ineligible to vote because my Wikimedia Commons account does not apply to the voting rules. That is true, but my de:Wikipedia account definitely applies to these rules. I checked it myself with the following tool: http://toolserver.org/~mono/account/tool.php But it is true that I did not connect these two accounts before. I did that now (I hope that it is ok the way I did) and I apologize for that mistake. But I have also been messaged the following: "You voted multiple times in Round 2. You may vote only once in Round 1(the Final)." To be honest, I don't understand what you mean. How could I vote in round 2 when it hasn't even started? And why is round 1 called "the Final"? I thought that round 2 was the final. What I did was that I voted multiple times in round 1 according to the rules posted here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2010/Eligibility I don't see that I made a mistake there. I hope that this helps to clarify that my votes don't have to be struck. Thanks --Suppengrün (talk) 15:56, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

-- RE rillke questions? 21:41, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think I have the same problem. Probably you haven't made your account global? See: en:Wikipedia:Unified_login. Or maybe something else that is against the third rule on Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2010/Eligibility. To I now made my account global, can I be rechecked for eligibilty? Or have i completely misunderstood something? Perhaps a link could be put in the eligibility instructions for SUL leading to some kind of description about what a SUL-account actually is? Can't vote from half-year galleries edit

The vote buttons on the half-year gallery pages take me to the image's vote page, rather than auto-voting through JavaScript as advertised. The category galleries have working auto-vote buttons. Is this just happening to me? Is it intentional? If it is, I'd suggest that the documentation be updated, as it currently implies that any gallery will have buttons for auto-voting. -- Perey (talk) 06:52, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, changing your votes is easy. Also please note that you are only allowed to vote once for this round. Click "my contributions" at the top of your page, and click on the image link that you would like to remove your name from. Scroll down to the Votes section and locate your name to make sure it is there. Click edit, remove the one line containing your name, explain why you are removing your name in the edit summary, and click "save page". – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 09:50, 19 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Unable to vote edit

I was trying to vote today but got the message "Voting has not begun yet!" when i click the "Vote for this image" button.--Ankara (talk) 08:09, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, some committee members wanted to start this vote and others not (they wanted to verify the winners and notify voters of the first round before). But those who don't wanted are admins and protected the pages. My suggestion: Re-visit this page in one week. not a committee member -- RE rillke questions? 08:35, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
So there is an edit war between various members of the organizing committee? That might negatively affect our reputation. People come here from all over the Wikipedia/Wikimedia-world to vote. We have been advertising for POY. And there is no information on why voting is suddenly closed.--Ankara (talk) 10:22, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
ok. so here is the problem with "protecting" the poty competition pages: when you get a disagreement between the committee members, the admins in the group can "overrule" everybody else.
this is WHY poty should NOT have been "protected" without an open discussion & consensus. we're a OPEN WIKI, & it matters when community members violate those basic principles, especially if/when the users doing so have greater powers than the average members of the community. Lx 121 (talk) 12:04, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
As far as I know, the list of finalists are not finished yet, so starting the vote in this case is not a good decision. The votes were counted by tools but not yet been checked with human, therefore we cannot rely on that completely. Also, something suspicious has encountered with the tools results too. See Commons:Picture of the Year/2010/Results/R1/Diagrams/Table; the differences between "Vote on May 6 18:24 (ignoring ineligible votes )" (made by tools) and "Vote (checked)" (made by human) give us something to work on. That's why I think we should need to re-check before the final round begins. — Tanvir | Talk ] 15:06, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
& those are perfectly good reasons to delay the vote but all of this should be happening in open discussion & by consensus NOT because the admins on the comittee "locked out" the non-admins.
right now, all there is, is confusion & a lack of open-ness/information/discussion about what's going on.
Lx 121 (talk) 15:40, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I hope that we've found a solution to restart the 2nd round soon, please take a look at that Commons_talk:Picture_of_the_Year/2010/Preparation#Preparation_for_the_.28re.29start_of_round_2 - Hoo man (talk) 23:39, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

This lack of discipline, professionalism, and communication is incredibly disappointing. The committee is being especially unfair to those who have made such outstanding an effort to produce highly professional images for Wikimedia, and I think the confusion that has transpired is tainting the honor that these images deserve. I think a more clear explanation and apology to all the producers of candidate images, and to all of us who have already voted in Round 2, would be incredibly helpful. There is still a lot we all don't understand and need clarified, and I think trying to sift through an absolutely massive discussion thread will only make us more confused. Not to mention, there are users out there who will probably remain completely unaware that their vote was potentially nullified, and deserve another chance to make it count. Sinisterminister (talk) 07:15, 21 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

This year I've only voted, without helping: I liked this version, I think it looks really better than last years. If you have interanl problems, don't affect voters. I suggest you to postpone the 2nd round, it's easy! You should write everywhere that the second round will start soon, due to techical problems. Bye, --sNappyml 15:03, 21 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Errors in the results edit

I browsed the table of results (here) and found several unchecked votes and unstriked invalid votes. Also, my counting didn't always agree with the reults. One example: Commons:Picture of the Year/2010/R1/File:Children of Kabul, Afghanistan.jpg (87 votes, instead of 85?). -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 08:41, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

OK, so now what? edit

it's been about 5 days now, since the "premature start" of R2 voting (& subsequent close of same)

i've scanned through all the (seemingly) relevant pages @ poty 2011: planning, talk, q&a, committee, etc.

& there is no news

no "official" explanation

no recent updates

so what is the situation, currently?

which one? Lx 121 (talk) 15:00, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I was under the impression people were taking the reins on this. While I first started many of the pages and was the first to add my name to the committee list, I didn't expect to have to hold hands all the way though this. Very few people are working on OTRS tickets for Commons and all my time is taken up on those and I can't even effectively get to backlogs on Commons. So there's no way I'm counting votes by hand. I thought people had tools for this. It's been frustrating from the start, with the entire POTY 2009 committee disappearing and even that one was completely new from 2008 and before. I don't think there will be a POTY 2011. – Adrignola talk 15:12, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Is there anyone that could assert the situation, write a list of tasks to be done so that the voting can start again? I might be able to help but don't know what to do. Badzil (talk) 15:43, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Count the votes of eligible voters :) of the R1 and put it in some table. Make sure you check the revision history, whether somebody removed votes, voted under another name, manipulated other votings, ... . Final Round Eligibility edit

If an user votes more than once, is he disqualified at all pictures? Example:

Picture1: User voted here | Passed

Picture2: User voted here | Disqualified

or

Picture1: User voted here | Disqualified

Picture2: User voted here | Disqualified

Yes. Following this rule : Template:2010POTY/Ineligible, every vote of the ineligible voter should be cancelled after the last day. --92.135.105.227 14:26, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

"vote for this image" is unclear edit

The yellow "vote for this image" button is not clear; it could mean a vote for the below image.

It would be a simple enhancement to change the text to "vote for the above image" instead. Carlaude (talk) 15:12, 2 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
