Overwrite

How it is possible to upload from appr. 40 files which have the same content but they have a higher resolution. I want overwrite the old one. Is it only possible step by step or with an other way. I tried it with File:SchlossHof 1997.jpg, but I was not successfully. --K@rl (talk) 15:24, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

  1. Upload Wizard does not allow overwriting files
  2. So either you have a bot or you have to do it manually clicking Upload a new version of this file which is located directly below the file history table and following that procedure.

Ok, so with the Upload Wizard you can't upload a second (third ... ) version of a file, but the Upload Wizard is the only way to upload files over 100 MB (after enabling the chunked upload in the preferences) -> So uploading an other version of a file over 100 MB is not possible, right? --Rob-nowman (talk) 19:21, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

bio headshots of Ohio public officials

I've got a photo I wanted to link of an Ohio Appellate Judge, it's the one she's used on campaign literature and is on the court's website bio for her: http://www.11thcourt.co.trumbull.oh.us/ed_otoole.html and in this case is also the one she emailed me when I inquired about expanding/creating entries for the current judges for wiki. So I definitely have permission, but I'd prefer not to have to ask each and everyone of them in regards to their official headshots. What should I do to upload this photo and the others? What if any license is needed, etc? What you need is not permission from the subjects, but from the copyright holder(s). That's probably the photographer(s) or the County, depending on whether the photos were created as works for hire. And the permission needs to cover a lot more than use in a particular article. What you need is the copyright holder's approval for publication under a copyright license that allows anyone to use the photos in modified or unmodified form and for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Uploading a new version of a file

Uploading new version of image

Trying to upload a cropped version of an image, but clicking on the "Upload new version of this file" takes me to the original upload long-form instead of the abbreviated new-version form that I've used in the past. Why the change?---Woodlot (talk) 17:06, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

total and utter mess up

 
Edit tab and move link can be used to correct mistakes

made a mess in the title of an image using my smartphone but not until i loaded it did I see! I have templated file:East Anglian concelled shoes.jpg for removal but have found that I cannot upload the correct version because this one already exists. Am happy to wait until mistake has been deleted, but is this train of events right, the only "thing" that is the same is the image. Thanks Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 14:49, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi, you've now the latest welcome template on your user talk page. You cannot upload a file with the same content twice (even not after it is deleted), instead errors can be corrected on-wiki, just ask for a {{Rename}} (c.f. also RenameLink) of your file. The description can be corrected by pressing the edit edit-tab on the file description page. You can see, both, the move link and the edit link you have to use to correct this issue in the screenshot. -- Rillke(q?) 15:55, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Help on correct mix of copyright tags.

The image I would like to upload is [1]. This is a scan or photograph of a broadsheet published in France by the Black Sun Press. The text was created by one of the founders of the press (Harry Crosby, d. 1929) and printed shortly after his death.

As the text falls outside of the "70 years after the death of the author" rule, and the image is a faithful reproduction, I believe the file is in the public domain. However, I haven't been able to figure out which mix of tags to use to indicate this.

Suggestions?

Based on the information you've provided, the text is in the public domain in the country of first publication (France), as it has been more than 70 years since the author died ({{PD-old-70}}), and the faithful reproduction should be covered by {{PD-Art}}, {{PD-scan}} or one of their variants as far as Commons is concerned. (Commons policy is to ignore legislation that extends copyright protection to faithful reproductions, but you are still personally responsible in the eyes of the law for what you upload.) However, it also needs to be i the public domain in the United States (where Wikimedia is based). Because of Commons:URAA-restored copyrights, determining that gets a lot more complicated, and you may wish to inquire at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:56, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

I assume that even though this is the upload help desk, your question is not about uploading files to Commons, but rather about reusing content outside Wikimedia. That page should contain all the information you need. You do not need to obtain any special permission unless the image has licensing conditions that you are not willing or able to abide by. You should be able to find the licensing information on the file description page. If you wish to negotiate different terms than the ones shown on the file description page, you need to contact the copyright holder(s). You should be able to find out who that is by looking at the file description page as well. If you need more specific help, please state the name of the file that you have in mind. You speak of "your map on Japan" as if there were only one, but there are hundreds of files just in Category:Maps of the Sea of Japan and its subcategories, and probably several more that have not yet been categorised. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:27, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

can't upload a photo

I've been trying to upload a photo to an article on an artist. Hi CherryNat, which system complains? Your camera, your scanner software or Wikimedia Commons after selecting the file in your browser to be uploaded? Anyway, you can try opening and saving the file with your preferred image manipulation program and re-try uploading it. -- Rillke(q?) 12:30, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi CherryNat, why did you create a new user account? Aside from that, what type of file are you trying to upload? If it complains that it would have the wrong extension, it's often the case that your file, indeed has the wrong file extension. The file extension is the part of the file name that follows the last dot (.) in the file name and is hidden in many systems. On Windows you can right click a file and select "properties" from the context menu to see the file extension. This file extension must match the file format. The file format specifies how the data that describes your photo is aligned and saved onto your and other hard disks.
To make it simple, can you upload your JPEG to another website, e.g. Google Drive or Microsoft's SkyDrive or Senspace? Then, we can easily evaluate what's the cause for these issues. Sometimes it's just some code inside the file that makes it look like another filetype and that we can safely remove. -- Rillke(q?) 19:17, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

That file is not a JPEG file but a PNG file, so its name doesn't match its contents. Rather than Bart_Dorsa_Venice_2013.jpg, it should be named Bart_Dorsa_Venice_2013.png. That said, as this is a photo, it would be more suitable to actually use the JPEG format. As http://www.sendspace.com/file/otyht0 is a low-resolution version, I assume you still have the original photo? —LX (talk, contribs) 09:29, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Uploading File

I am trying to upload a portrait photo for a bio of Gene Pierson. The photo was recently removed because it is possible I did not give the right release information last time I uploaded it, making it free for use. The photo is owned by Gene Pierson and he has given me permission to make it free for use. Now I would like to upload it again, but the system isn't letting me. Plese try one of the ways listed at COM:UPLOAD which do not involve "Upload Wizard". Then, you will be either able to upload that file or, at least, you will be supplied with the name of the duplicate file and we can look up why it was deleted. -- Rillke(q?) 17:25, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
I assume you're talking about File:Gene Pierson.jpg, which was deleted as a result of Commons:Deletion requests/File:Gene Pierson.jpg. You'll need to send in evidence that the copyright holder has approved publication under a license that allows anyone to use the photo in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes, to our permission archive (follow the link for instructions). The volunteers that process the permission will ensure that the file is undeleted when the required documentation is provided. Can I upload images of these sculptures?

Hello,

I've been working on improving articles related to Dr. Seuss on the English Wikipedia lately, and I've set on the idea of uploading a few images of the Dr. Seuss Memorial in Springfield, Massachusetts. It's a sculpture garden, incorporating many of his famous characters. So I plan to use close-ups of the various characters to illustrate the Legacy/Cultural impact sections of the appropriate articles. There are a bunch of fitting images available, under acceptable licenses, on Flickr. But before I upload a half dozen pictures here, I want to know: Is this okay? I figure the images are free, but what they depict are not. I know Wikimedia is particular about what it allows, so I thought I'd ask.

Also, it's worth noting that a picture of a part of the monument is already uploaded to the English Wikipedia. [2].

EDITING AND ATTACHING AN IMAGE TO A PAGE

Sirs, I uploaded two images but am unable to attach them to the appropriate page. Can you assist? I am editing the page on Thunderstorms - in particular - direction of travel. I uploaded from an image called 'northern hemisphere thunderstorm prediction diagram.jpeg' and 'southern hemisphere thunderstorm prediction diagram.jpeg' When I try to attach them, I get no thumbnail, just a description. The file names are File:Southern Hemisphere Thunderstorm Prediction Diagram.jpg and File:Northern Hemisphere Thunderstorm Prediction Diagram.jpg. Using these names (with jpg instead of jpeg), adding them to an article should work. --rimshottalk 21:38, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Permission Given

First, I very much doubt that whoever administrates that website is the copyright holder of those images, meaning they have no authority to give any sort of permission. Secondly, permission for you to upload to Commons is not sufficient. What you need is for the real copyright holder to agree to publication under a license that allows anyone to use the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes, in modified or unmodified form. —LX (talk, contribs) 14:59, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Help uploading work taken by someone else but from whom I got permission to use

The reason I am asking is because I have tried this before and failed, I rather not have that happen again. I am trying to upload pictures of footballers in India but I do not have the luxary of living in India myself, however I was able to get in touch with the admin of a blog on Indian football who has pictures himself of players (good ones as well). I asked him if I could use and upload them on wiki while also saying that I would give credit to him and his blog (as a source) and he said yes. Now, the hard part, I dont know what to do next. I know which photos I want to upload but I dont know the actual process on commons for when I try to upload someone elses work with permission. If someone can help that would be great. Cover of a music score

I would like to upload a copy of this image: http://imaginatorium.org/private/paderewski.jpg

This is the front cover of the famous minuet in G, written in 1887 by Paderewski, who died in 1941. The score is undated, but the plates of this edition are numbered E. A. 35144, and a copy with the same plate number for sale here - http://www.abebooks.co.uk/Menuet-Paderewski-I.J-London-Edwin-Ashdown/1724845577/bd - is said to have an ownership inscription dated 1923. So the basic publication is at least 90 years old, and should be out of copyright in both the EU and USA. However, my particular copy, which has been in my possession since about 1963 includes in the list of works on the back page Rachmaninoff's date of death, given as 1945. Since he died in 1943 this doesn't mean much, except that this particular printing probably occurred between 50 and 70 years ago.

I would like to add this to Wikipedia, as an example listing of different arrangements of a particular work; can I upload it? If I cannot upload it, can I include a link to its existence somewhere else (since it must surely be at least fair use/dealing to show), with an extract of the list of arrangements?

This is not Wikipedia or Wikopedia. The site you're on right now is called Wikimedia Commons. It is a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. We do not host encyclopædia articles or other plain-text content. See Commons:Project scope/Summary for more information on what this project is all about.
If the biography is within the project scope of one of the Wikipedia projects, you can add it there. For example, if it meets the English Wikipedia project's notability guidelines and you don't have a personal connection to the subject, you can create an article there. Note that articles are created by editing pages on the wiki just like you did when you entered your question here. Oops, it looks like you forgot to state your question and to sign your entry. Middelburg, Damplein

LS. I would like to upload a picture of the front of my monument in Middelburg, Damplein 18. It's already visible when I search for monument Middelburg Damplein, but fails to show in the list "Lijst van rijksmonumenten in Middelburg/Damplein" https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_rijksmonumenten_in_Middelburg/Damplein. Clicking the word "upload" I get the statement "Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 is closed. You may still share your images, but they will not be part of the competition." Fine, but it still does not show in the list! What should I do? Note that the picture appears in https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=middelburg+damplein+18&button=&title=Special%3ASearch (search for "middelburg damplein 18", so the pisture is uploaded! Der Uploder sagt mir in einem nicht so optimalen deutsch folgendes: "Es gibt im Wiki bereits eine [/wiki/File:Wappen_von_Greding.svg andere Datei] gleichen Namens." Am besten mit Special:Upload (oder irgendetwas, was nicht Wizard ist, von Commons:Hochladen) hochladen, Warnungen ignorieren und trotzdem hochladen und einfach die Dateibeschreibung von der Originaldatei kopieren. Es geht um die Datei File:Wappen_von_Greding.png und das Problem ist unter bugzilla:46741 gelistet. Du findest die "Problem-Datei", indem Du Special:PrefixIndex/File:Wappen_von_Greding (Special:PrefixIndex/<datei ohne erweiterung>) aufrufst. Das Problem mit der falschen Datei und dem ungeparsten Link ist bereits behoben und wird verschwinden, sobald der Assistent auf Commons von den Systemadministratoren aktualisiert wird. -- Rillke(q?) 22:25, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Donating a Photo

When you say that it is "your photo", do you mean that you created the photo entirely yourself and you are the sole copyright holder, or do you mean that it's a photo of you that someone else created, or something else? If you're seeing the "The license is described by the following wikitext" text, it means you have first selected the options "This file is not my own work" and that you have the right to publish the work for "another reason not mentioned above". If the answer to my first question is that it is your own work, why are you choosing the option that states it's not your own work? —LX (talk, contribs) 15:12, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

I don't see where you stated that above, but anyway: owning a physical copy of the photo does not mean that you are the copyright holder. That probably belongs to the heir(s) of the photographer, meaning you will have to get their permission to publish the photo under a free license. —LX (talk, contribs) 15:55, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

HELP... I think I need to ask my question once again... I am the daughter of deceased Frank Eliscu (wiki bio) 1912 - 1996. I have many photos from his file which I wish to put on his biography. The photos were taken by an uncle of mine for Dad. The uncle is long deceased as is his wife and they had no children. How do I upload it to you where it asks me for the license description? The thing to understand is that almost none of us here are actual lawyers. We can share practical advice on relatively clear cases, but we're not qualified to deliver extended legal consultations on difficult or obscure cases (and if we were qualified, we would probably charge by the hour for it). If the United States Congress hasn't done anything to fix the problem of Oprhan works, then we won't be able to do much about it on Wikimedia Commons... AnonMoos (talk) 12:58, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

This user http://www.panoramio.com/user/7356458 has amazing photos of Chinese bridges. Many that currently have no photos here. The user uses the Attribution-Share Alike licence. Please do not upload photos from that account. The user is uploading photos taken with a wide range of cameras, e.g. Canon EOS 50D, Canon DIGITAL IXUS 50, Canon DIGITAL IXUS 85 IS, Canon EOS 7D, Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS 500D, Canon EOS 300D DIGITAL, SONY DCR-TRV75E etc. I couldn't find two photos taken with the same camera. Obviously, they're just collecting photos taken by other people, which means they have no right to upload them under their own name, nor to issue any licenses for those photos. —LX (talk, contribs) 16:30, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

How to request an upload

Use of uploaded images using straight html

Possibly not the right place to pose this question, if not, please point me to a better forum.

First question : Why does my uploaded image not display inline?

I am testing in my sandbox, here is the code in the wiki edit pane

All that happens is that the above code is displayed, no image is displayed.

Assuming I can get to display the image (WITH THE usemap qualifier), is there any chance at all that wikimedia will support tooltips as per the below?

Question two : Does the wiki parser support the following standard html syntax in any form?

< map name="bannermap"> < area shape="rect" coords="55,56,79,124" title="My tooltip text">

Motivation : I want to associate tooltip text to parts of the image, it works fine in straight html, but the wiki parser simply inserts the text on the visible page, without creating tooltips (this may be related to the fact that the image is not shown).

In Wikimedia markup, only a few specific approved HTML tags are allowed. All other HTML is forbidden. The only way to display an image inline is with [[File:2013-nov-27.jpg|thumb|...]] or similar. The approved way of doing image-area tool tips is with Image annotations... AnonMoos (talk) 12:45, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
