Overview of monuments

This page has been created to help with the creation of lists of cultural heritage monuments on Wikipedia, in preparation of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016.

Introduction

Wiki Loves Monuments has been set-up to have all the cultural heritage monuments in the world visible on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. To provide the public information about the cultural heritage in a country, lists of monuments are created to give an overview of all the monuments in a certain administrative area.

Therefore it is highly recommended to have also list(s) of cultural heritage monuments from your country on Wikipedia. In some countries it takes a lot of time to obtain the information from the cultural heritage register(s) or it takes much time to create the lists on Wikipedia. We recommend to have the lists ready on Wikipedia before the start of the contest, but we understand that this is not always possible.

Before you start with creating lists on Wikipedia, we have some recommendations how this can be done the best.

If you have created lists as we recommend, it is possible to automatically add a direct upload link with some information automatically pre-filled in the upload form, so it is easier for participants to upload their photos.

What to keep in mind with creating a list of monuments?

Lists of monuments give readers an overview of what important cultural heritage is in an area. We recommend using a table with in each row a specific monument, with in some columns the most important characteristics of the several monuments. There is at least one column for the location (usual: coordinates, often also a second column for the address/place), one column for the image, and a column for the unique identifier. Other columns that are often used are the name of the object, type of object, architect, date/year of building, date of when it was added to the list by the heritage organisation, and one column for a short description. Things to take into account:

• Use row templates: build a table with row templates (and a header template), so that you can easy add/remove columns and being able to change the links to an external database when the links change.
  
  
• Use unique identifiers: each monument in a country must have a unique identifier. In most cases this number is assigned to the monument by the national heritage agency of that country. If these aren't available you can create a system on your own. If these numbers are only unique in a certain region, you need to add a prefix to all identifiers. Best practice is to use the ISO 3166-2 that are assigned to an area in a country (if available). Example: in Bolivia there are lists of monuments per department. Based on ISO 3166-2:BO the identifiers of monuments in Santa Cruz Department get S/ as prefix. Result: 00-000 -> S/00-000
  If in your area monuments do not have a unique identifier, we recommend you then consider adding all the monuments to Wikidata and using the Q... of each item as the identifier.
  
  
• Enable uploading directly from the monument list: several Wikipedias use the Template:UploadCampaignLink for that. On some Wikipedias this link is shown only in September, on others during the whole year. Upload campaigns will stay available the whole year and can be used also outside the contest of Wiki Loves Monuments. This direct link to the upload campaigns makes it possible to pre-fill some information in the upload wizard so that users do not have to fill in much by hand, see the section #How to link to the upload campaign and pre-fill it?

Suggestions

• If the description, used in the upload link, contains links, references, etc, you can create a copy of Module:Delink on your local wiki to remove unwanted codes.
• Set as extra parameter commonscat in the row template to get images directly uploaded to the right category on Commons.
