This is the talk page for discussing improvements to Commons:SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India.

SVGTranslate tool for the campaign edit

Hello. I'm a product manager working on creating a tool to allow for easy translation of SVG files on Commons. This project is nearing completion and will be available as a beta within a couple of weeks. You can read about the project here and see a demonstration of how it will work here. There are some bugs right now including one with some languages missing in the preview. Also we have not yet enabled upload to Commons but once complete, users will be able to upload their translations to Commons instantly. I'm confident that we will be able to fix most of the major problems before this campaign begins. This tool will greatly reduce the amount of time required to translate SVGs as the users will not need to install or understand how image editing softwares work in order to translate SVGs. Let me know if you are interested in giving this tool a try for the campaign. Thanks! -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 05:23, 22 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Niharika, I think there is a goodly group of SVG trained Indic Wikimedians who would be quite keen to test the tool out. Thanks for the test URL - will pass it around. Shyamal L. (talk) 13:48, 22 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Shyamal: Please know that it's only a demo for now. File upload and download is disabled at the moment. We are aware of the majority of the bugs and they are being worked on at the moment. It will likely be a few weeks before the tool is fully available for use. If interested, you can follow the project progress here Thanks! -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 16:11, 22 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@NKohli (WMF): Hi Niharika, thanks for the letting us know about this. This will definitely be useful for the campaign. Atleast, we can put it to test and report issues, if there are any. We will definitely use this tool, depending on its readiness atleast a couple of weeks before the campaign ends, i.e. 31 March 2019. As Shyamal mentioned, we've a group of Wikimedians with knowledge of SVGs, we'll try using this tool over the next few days, and get back to you. @KCVelaga: Sounds good. I am putting together a guide for using this tool here - Commons:SVG Translate tool. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 01:41, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi NKohli (WMF), I tried translating a file yesterday, but unfortunately it didn't work out. The above link gave me this error Oops! An Error Occurred. The server returned a "500 Internal Server Error". Something is broken. Please let us know what you were doing when this error occurred. We will fix it as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. The homepage is working (https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgtranslate-test/), but when an input file name is given, and click "Translate" it gives the error. I tried this (https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgtranslate/) as well. When I clicked translate, it took me here https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgtranslate/File:Turbulence_in_Abdominal_Aorta_Aneurisma.svg. But the preview of the file was not displayed, and when I download the file, the original English (input) version is being downloaded. I am assuming these issues are due to on-boarding of the tool's actual version from the test version. Please let me know if there are any updates from your side. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 06:50, 3 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@KCVelaga: On the test instance, we are using the beta commons for testing purposes which is causing some of the problems you see. We are working on resolving these issues and I'll let you know as soon as the tool is usable again. Thanks. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 18:09, 4 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@NKohli (WMF): Thanks for the update. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 18:21, 4 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@KCVelaga: The file rendering images are now fixed. You should be able to test with files. File upload will be enabled shortly. Thank you. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 20:09, 7 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

SVG-Translate tool demonstration edit

Hello. From my previous post, you may know that the SVG-Translate tool will be ready for use before the campaign starts. I will like to hold a Hangout meeting session to show the tool to the campaign organizers and anyone else who's interested. I'd like to do this sometime this week or next weekend. If you are interested in attending this session, please comment below with your preferred time for attending. I will try to schedule it at a time that works for everyone. Thank you. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 19:38, 11 February 2019 (UTC) Ping KCVelaga, Shyamal, Jinoytommanjaly. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 21:35, 11 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Niharika. I am fine with most India daytime. Will wait for others to decide. Shyamal L. (talk) 02:38, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@NKohli (WMF): Thanks for suggesting this. It'll be helpful. I am also fine with India daytime times with exceptions to the following: 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm UTC on Thursday, 1:00 am to 12:00 pm UTC on Friday, and after 2:15 pm UTC on Saturday and Sunday. Any other times apart from these will work for me. If it is on a weekend it will be even better as we can get more organisers. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 05:15, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Fine with this week anytime expect this Saturday evening (IST). As krishna told weekend is better so that more organisers can attend the section.--Jinoytommanjaly (talk) 06:40, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@KCVelaga, Shyamal, and Jinoytommanjaly: Does 9am IST Saturday, 16 February work for all of you? I can also push it to 10am, if that is preferred. Please also ping other people who might be interested in attending this meeting. Thank you. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 18:42, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@NKohli (WMF): It works for me. I'll also inform other who might be interested. Thanks, KCVelaga (talk · mail) 05:09, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@NKohli (WMF): works for me too. Shyamal L. (talk) 10:15, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Query edit

@NKohli (WMF): - why does this not work - File:BirdBeaksA.svg even though the script identifies it as being translateable... Shyamal L. (talk) 04:02, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Interesting. I'm not sure why this doesn't work. The file seems fine to me. I will add that as a bug. Thanks Shyamal. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 04:06, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
When I tried
https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgtranslate/File:BirdBeaksA.svg
The tool did not show any strings to translate.
The tool is confused by this text element with a tspan inside a tspan:
  <text
     x="16.151398"
     y="1393.5846"
     id="text2480"
     xml:space="preserve"><tspan
       x="16.151398"
       y="1393.5846"
       id="tspan2482"><tspan
         x="16.151398"
         y="1393.5846"
         id="tspan2484">Not to scale</tspan></tspan></text>
After reducing it to just a text element, the tool displays the strings to translate. Glrx (talk) 07:17, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for catching that Glrx! Shyamal Is there a reason for the nested tspans with same attributes? -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 00:47, 20 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@NKohli (WMF): this was added by Inkscape, perhaps older versions worked differently. I wish there was a svg optimise option built into Inkscape. Shyamal L. (talk) 02:06, 20 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Can the deadline be extended ? edit

Can the deadline be extended ? It would be helpful to complete the pending images & submit. Thanks in advance. Veena.manikprabhu (talk) 08:43, 1 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Veena.manikprabhu: Unfortunatley no. You can always upload those images to WCommons, but they will not be a part of this campaign. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 08:50, 1 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
