Logo for Wiki Science Competition

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Hi Shyamal - Merops cyanophrys has now been split from Merops orientalis; could you edit File:MeropsOrientalis.svg accordingly please, to split out the top image to a new file. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 01:31, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Have removed cyanophrys, I don't suppose it is really needed. Can be recovered from the older version if ever needed. Shyamal L. (talk) 11:28, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

The Modern Review edit

Hello Shyamal, hope you're doing well. While browsing images for D. P. Roy Chowdhury, I reached the category The Modern Review to which you've contributed. Thanks for uploading the wonderful images! I'm interested to know more about a few people. Do you have the access to the text articles as well that goes along with the images? Let me know about it. DesiBoy101 (talk) 02:32, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

@DesiBoy101: you can find the content at this place and if you want OCR-ed and searchable versions of the same, they are added to the Internet Archive and you can search the OCR text with the lens icon on the left at this page or run google searches with "site:archive.org" to help. Shyamal L. 02:49, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
PS: that university of calcutta site may ask for a password, just note the url - right click and copy the URL and use only the amazon content link portion - Shyamal L. 02:54, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for sharing the info. This is exactly what I was looking for. The Internet Archive serves my purpose well. Appreciate your help. DesiBoy101 (talk) 03:12, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

File:Jerdon Cleghorn Bourne.jpg edit

Hello Shyamal, wondering if it could be confirmed the person on the right (sitting in the chair) is William Jameson (botanist, born 1815), if positive a (cropped) file could be added to the article. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 13:48, 6 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Lotje: - yes that would be the same William Jameson. Shyamal L. 10:46, 13 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much Shyamal, you just made my day   I'll make a crop and add it to the article. Lotje (talk) 10:50, 13 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Lotje: - sorry, I did not read your post carefully, the people are exactly as captioned in the file description from left to right (I have just added that now) "Photograph of John Lindsay Stewart Conservator of Forests, Punjab William Jameson (Suptd. Tea plantations), Thomas Jerdon, John Lindsay Stewart William Jameson (Suptd. Tea plantations) (standing) and Hugh Cleghorn" - so the crop you have made is of Hugh Cleghorn. Sorry, I did not read carefully enough. I thought you were copying from the image caption and asking me for confirmation... Shyamal L. 14:24, 13 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I moved the file now and replaced the file at wikidata. Lotje (talk) 14:38, 13 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, there was an error - but does not affect you. Shyamal L. 12:10, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

commons app: I get a "failed" message for every image even though it successfully uploads to commons. edit

I often feel that way too (not always). I suspect the following: if file name and description are identical, it comes to the problem described by you Molgreen (talk) 05:12, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Molgreen: It seems that it is now a known bug - see https://github.com/commons-app/apps-android-commons/issues/5037 Shyamal L. 10:28, 26 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Another map edit request edit

Hi Shyamal - on File:Egretta gularis map.svg, could you remove the green mapped in the Americas (species does not occur there), and the pink in Africa and the orange in south Asia (Egretta dimorpha and E. sacra are both now treated as separate species). Thanks! - MPF (talk) 23:12, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@MPF: , I had a look and recollected the original context - see en.wiki - apparently there are records of gularis vagrants across the Americas - see cited sources and this was to show other similar-looking taxa on the map. Shyamal L. 03:16, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks! Odd, I didn't get the ping notification so I have only seen your reply just now. I appreciate your looking into this, but I still think the map is confusing, as I (and I would suspect most others) would read it as showing E. gularis to be a widespread, regular, ± breeding species in the Americas, rather than a handful of vagrants. Could it be changed to a few dots, like it is for the Spanish and French occurrences? The dots don't need to show the exact locations of individual records if the details are not easily available, just something proportional to the number of records in each country concerned. Thanks again! - MPF (talk) 22:59, 21 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's a good suggestion, would need me to examine the records more carefully and adding perhaps some x marks. Will try to do that. Shyamal L. 02:56, 22 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! - MPF (talk) 17:54, 30 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Shyamal!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Larryasou (talk) 14:24, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Since it was connected to Wikidata, it should only have been a bot task to add categories. In fact the future search system will likely make manual categories obsolete. Shyamal L. 15:09, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
