Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries) or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 08:50, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Mycalesis anaxias.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Luna moth.jpg edit

Hello, a while back you uploaded the file "luna moth.jpg". I wanted to inform that the picture is actually of a similar species, Actias selene, not Actias luna. I found the image mislabeled on a couple of other wikis (most noteably the French). I was wondering if you wouldn't mind changing the file name so that there isn't any confusion. spider on water edit

hi shyamal,

do you possibly remember the size of this spider? It looks rather like a Pirata species than Dolomedes fimbriatus to me. the two look really similar, but Dolomedes is bigger: 10-15mm vs. 5-10mm. cheers :) --Sarefo 18:46, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

It was small. Around 5 cm span from diametric legs tip-to-tip. Shyamal 03:37, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, can you ask your friend to send his permission to use this photo under the cc-by-sa-2.0 license to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org? Thanks, Yonatanh 23:53, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Yonatanh, I am afraid this may not be easy. This was obtained by hand from the original photographer who does not live in a place with great communication. I can however stand in place for him. The photograph does not happen to be anywhere else on the Internet. Shyamal 11:28, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
And yes, the original photographer has given explicit permission for reuse for any purpose with credit. Shyamal 11:29, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Personally, I believe you but I suggest you put the photograph on your watchlist because someone else may not. Also, if at some point it is possible for him to send an e-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, it'd be very appreciated. Just letting you know that if you didn't get permission (and again, I do believe you), you could be sued for copyright infringement and have to pay a lot of money in damages. Yonatan talk 15:14, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Give me a while, I will try. And I presume you need the email complete with email headers etc. Maybe I will get a personal authorization, since there are many other pictures by him that I have uploaded. Shyamal 13:51, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's good as long as he mentions that he's releasing it under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License (or GFDL). Yonatan talk 15:14, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for sending that permission but I think the guys at permission-commons@wikimedia.org (I can't read emails sent there) may ask you to actually forward the whole email without snipping any bit. Regarding the image I mention here, if you took it, please change it to {{cc-by-2.5}} and if not, please explain why it's under that license (and of course if you have a permission please send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). Thanks, Yonatan talk 07:58, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have marked this image for deletion. It would be too much to follow up again for permission. It was granted in informal mails, but if this is being tightened up to follow strict permission letters for every medium. It would be easier to mark them up for deletion. Shyamal 11:43, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
You can ask him informally to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License, you don't have to use that big scary notice. Also, in the future please use {{reason for deletion}} Yonatan talk 15:17, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Category:Banyan edit

Actually, I just implemented a proposal of mine at en:Talk:Banyan that I think clarifies matters after finding some links. A Banyan is a specimen of Ficus benghalensis. Strangler Fig is the common name for several species, most probably Ficus aurea if one is talking about the U.S., but including other figs and some unrelated vines. A banyan is a type of fig with a unique lifecycle in which it strangles its host. A strangler fig is a type of fig with a unique lifecycle in which it strangles its host. Figs of the genus Urostigma are a type of fig with a unique lifecycle in which it strangles its host. Banyan, strangler fig and Urostigma are synonyms, so the addition of Category:Banyan to Image:Strangler fig kerala.jpg was correct. The image doesn't state a species but, given its location, there is a strong chance that not only is it a banyan, but it may be a Banyan. - BanyanTree 11:11, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, it seems like the main points are at en:Banyan, so let's centralize discussion there. I propose coming to a solution there and afterwards determining the proper course of action for Commons categorization. Cheers, BanyanTree 21:06, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for an agreeable discussion. So what do you think about Category:Banyan? I realized upon second look that the category, being in the singular, should be about F. benghalensis, while I have been using it for the general "banyans". What do you think of creating a Category:Banyans to include all strangler figs, moving Category:Ficus benghalensis under the new category, and deleting Category:Banyan? Neither of us appear to be Commons admins, so I'll have to do a formal deletion proposal. Cheers, BanyanTree 08:12, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think it is best to leave it to the botanists on the tree of life project here. There have been all kinds of disputes about categories and pages and suchlike. I have not followed it much, being pretty happy if the right keywords are included in the description for searches to work. Shyamal 11:50, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Remiges, suggestion edit

Your current Image:Birdwing.svg shows primaries anchored in the curved wing bone (pale colour), which again is attached to the carpometacarpus (dark colour). In some illustrations that I have seen the primaries are anchored in the carpometacarpus itself and pass under the curved wing bone. Can't vouch that this is always so. If however you find this to be so, you can just extend those primaries behind the curved hand bone, till they reach the carpometacarpus. JMK 17:04, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Could you point me to a suitable illustration on the web showing this more accurately. I would be happy to fix such errors. Shyamal 03:44, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:HorseBot.png edit

I've been going through the veterinary medicine pages on Wikipedia for the purpose of assessment, but also to try and locate images. I saw Image:HorseBot.png, but the source [1] (which is the HTML version and does not actually contain the life cycle image) says specifically at the bottom "This information may be copied for noncommercial, educational purposes in its entirety with no changes." The image is tagged as public domain here on commons as being a work of the Federal government, but it looks like it comes from North Dakota State University, which would make it not public domain. I'll wait a bit before requesting its deletion, in case I'm wrong. Thanks. --Joelmills 20:55, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't state university mean it comes under work of government. That was my understanding, if it is incorrect, please do delete it. Shyamal 06:56, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh sorry, i just checked the US laws - The term only applies to the work of the federal government, not state or local governments. I was not aware of this. So please do delete. Shyamal 07:00, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:BirdBeaksA.svg edit

Hi, I saw that your Image:BirdBeaksA.svg is on the main page of the English wikipedia today. This is really nice work, good job! I was wondering if you might be willing to make a version that has the words in the picture instead of the letter code? This would be a great help to the image on the English wikipedia, and other language wikis could still use the letter coded version. I would do it myself but I'm not able to work with SVG files. Thanks again, Jeff Dahl 23:00, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I gave Inkscape a try and it turned out to be way easier than I thought. I uploaded Image:BirdBeaks named.svg which has all the names on it. Are you OK with this? If so, would it be the right idea to upload it replacing the earlier version? Thanks, Jeff Dahl 23:18, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
There was a reason to keep out the text. It is meant to be reused in different language wikis. But you are free to make a version with captions in it or to modify it and reuse as long as the license is respected. Shyamal 04:27, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I fixed the license to be the exact same as the original version, I hope this is satisfactory. On the English wikipedia, it is my intention to substitute instances of Image:BirdBeaksA.svg with the named version. Jeff Dahl 04:56, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

collection pics edit

hi shyamal,

yes, there's a reason why it does not say what collection it's from. i had some trouble with the person responsible for the collection, he has some very strange ideas, and told me i'm not allowed to make any pictures from it. that is after i already had made 200+ pics, because somebody else told me it's ok. so, in order not to have to delete them again, i deleted where they are from, because that was the only problem this person had: that people would know it's from them. if i'm lucky, i'll be able to get pictures of the collection of our university soon, and i'll see if i can get some information from there. but collector name, accession numbers etc. are fairly hard for me to get because they're below the specimen most of the time, and often i'm not allowed to actually touch the specimens. but who knows, maybe the person at the university will agree to do this right, that is do a database of the specimens, and then i'll have the data. thanks for your input :) --Sarefo 14:55, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Commelina ID edit

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm actually the assistant of a botanist at the Natural History Museum in Washington D.C. who specialises in Commelinaceae named Robert Faden. We've both had a look at your picture and it and we have it pretty well narrowed down to one of three species: Commelina diffusa, C. caroliniana or C. longifolia (also known as C. salicifolia). At first, as you may have noticed, I was thinking that it was Commelina diffusa, and while many characters are consistent with this species, the maroon spots on the staminodes (the cross-shaped sterile stames) are inconsistent with any material we have had. However, we don't have a lot of specimens from India, nor have either of us done any extensive field work there, so we are not very familiar with the variation that might exist there as it is a very widespread species. Based on what we know right now, we are guessing that the photo is Commelina caroliniana, which is actually a native of India despite the name. Do you have any further information on the flower, such as where you found it specifically? If you could get a photograph of the seeds, I could make a certain ID. Anyways, thanks for the challenge and hopefully we can figure it out with some more info. Djlayton4 16:02, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I should also ask if you remember its growth habit. Was it more or less upright, or was it sprawling on the ground? Was it in a wet spot, or in a drier area? Full sun, part shade, or full shade? Do you have any more photos of it that you didn't upload. If so, these could help. Thanks! Djlayton4 16:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Give me some time. This makes me more interested in keeping an eye out for Commelinas. I will need to look up my notes based on the dates on the EXIF for this. I keep notes on birds and not a great note keeper on plants. And I am off to the field for some time now and maybe I can give you fresh images with better supporting notes. Shyamal 07:03, 1 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

That one is Belosynapsis kewensis Hassk., which is an endemic of southern India, though it is quite common in cultivation worldwide. I have never been to India myself, but there are very few specimens of this plant, which suggests that it is quite uncommon in the wild. I've gone ahead and added the ID to the photo. Do you live in India then? If so, I would really appreciate it if you could take photos and notes on Commelinaceae species when you come across them. I am currently doing a study on Commelina diffusa and Commelina caroliniana in the US, but both originate from India. Due to the fact that most were only introduced to the US once means that variation is very low here, but much higher in India. This is why the previous ID was tough for me- both species appear different in the US. Anyways, thanks for the photos! Djlayton4 20:06, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the ID and information. I do live in India and go out into parts of the Western Ghats and will keep an eye out for members of the Commelinaceae. Thanks again. Shyamal 02:26, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Question about new file names edit

Hey Shyamal- I don't use the commons very extensively, so I was wondering if you could help me with something. I was looking at Image:Commelina benghalensis 0001.jpg, but it turns out that it is actually C. bracteosa. I went ahead and changed the description and so forth, but the file name is still misleading. Do you know how it can be changed? Thanks! Djlayton4 00:55, 14 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see you have put quite a lot of effort into John Gould. You may be interested in also helping us on Wikisource, as we will be collaborating on s:Author:John Go:uld for the next week.

Actually I only did the uploading. The scanning was done by en:User:AshLin. In any case you may get more help from the en WikiProject Birds on this. Shyamal 02:14, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

deprecated function in your monobook.js edit

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sthenias edit

Unfortunately, I haven't the keys of the genus Sthenias (Breuning, 1962 - Bestimmungstabelle der Lamiiden-Triben nebst Revision der Pteropliini der asiatischen Region (Col. Cerambycidae) - Ent. Arb. Mus. Frey, 13) with me (I moved from home), but I has already tried to identify your beetles and I have found some difficulties due to the pattern. There are several Sthenias-species, but all with an elytral pattern difficultly interpretable on the basis of only descriptions.
Breuning often used expressions like "band fairly longer... or shorter than that of..." another species..... or also described many times the same species with different names....
It's very difficult to identify that species without types or a very rich collection--Vitalfranz (talk) 10:49, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I understand the difficulty. No problem. Shyamal (talk) 11:22, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Shyamal/archive1!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 23:13, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Shyamal. I am very interested in the 60 William Morton Wheeler images that you and others have posted. I have the original lantern slides at Harvard University that W.M. Wheeler used for his book and other publication plates.

I am just starting a Global Ant Project website at: http://gap.entclub.org and I intend to post about 1,000 images of ants from these Lantern Slides. Your images by Wheeler posted to Wikipedia are of better quality than I can create from the original lantern slides. See my example of a Dacetine ant at http://gap.entclub.org/Web%20GAP/Global%20Ant%20Project.data/Taxonomists/Lantern%20Slides/Lantern%20Slides.html

Can you please tell me what techniques you used to duplicate Wheeler's images into such a high quality format? Did you use the PDF paper and enhance? Do you have more images of ants you can share? I will give you attribution on our Global Ant Project website if you are interested in making a contribution of ant images.

A few hundred of my lantern slides are of myrmecologists and other topics that have not been published.

Regards,

Beautiful snail edit

Hi Shyamal, What a very beautiful snail!

Do you have any idea at all what species (or genus, or family) it is? Even a common name would be a help... I am User:Invertzoo on the English Wikipedia. My talk page is here: [2]. I write a lot of snail and slug articles. Thanks for any help you can give us, 24.215.213.2 23:40, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can ask around. As of now, I have not taken too much interest in snails. Shyamal (talk) 02:11, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Files from Freesound edit

Hi. The Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0 license is non-free, because it prohibits commercial use of the original work, and prohibits the use of the derivatives the work (the certain allowed derivatives seem to be included; either way, the original work is not free) for advertisement and promotion of anything but the derivatives themselves.

Apparently you have tagged these Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 Unported out of confusion and not because they are released under that license, so I am deleting them:

--AVRS (talk) 11:50, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The license is http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/legalcode
It specifies the allowed derivative works in section 3a. Section 3c begins as “Prohibition on advertising. All advertising and promotional uses are excluded from the above rights, except”… but does not exclude the derivative works from this exclusion.
I’ll start a discussion at Commons_talk:Licensing.
--AVRS (talk) 13:22, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Please note that http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/ is simply a human-readable summary, which is not used by lawyers. --AVRS (talk) 13:39, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think the plain English lines in Creative Commons licenses are quite clear. Let me ask on Commons talk:Licensing. Shyamal (talk) 13:42, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shyamal,

Have you already scanned Salim Ali's India and loaded the images. I found the Emerald Dove, Mountain Quail & Cheer Pheasant already uploaded!

Perhaps these pictures are from older works by Baker or Hume. Shyamal (talk) 15:52, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
