Media donation from NCF edit

From off-wiki discussion on next steps by User:Shankar Raman.

  1. On Wikimedia Commons, create . Like this Or this
  2. On Wikimedia Commons, create "Category: NCF photos" as a hidden category. This is just for convenience. When people upload they can select this rather than type the longer name.
  3. On Wikimedia Commons, create Page on Nature Conservation Foundation. Like this: Commons:Naturalis Biodiversity Center. Or this: Commons:Swiss Federal Archives
  4. Fix category hierarchy for collating images: On add something like so that all images anyone uploads with category "NCF photos" automatically will appear under "Media contributed by Nature Conservation Foundation". Similarly, on the latter category page, we add Commons:Nature Conservation Foundation so that anyone visiting the NCF page on Wikimedia Commons will see all the images contributed/donated.

Then, we ask media contributors (from NCF) to:

  1. Create account on Wikimedia Commons (or use their existing Wikipedia account to log in)
  2. Use upload wizard to upload a few images
  3. Add categories to images during upload: "NCF photos" (required) and "Photos by XXX" and "Latin name" (suggested), where XXX is desired name, initials or nickname of the person contributing the images.

Currently the nesting is NCF photos→Media contributed by Nature Conservation Foundation→Commons:Nature Conservation Foundation Page→Wikiproject Nature and conservation in India. Of these, the Commons NCF page is not set up. I need help with content on that. Prashanthns (talk) 14:16, 11 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Media galleries under category edit

"Managed to nest 'Photos by TRSR' and 'Photo by SS' under 'NCF photos' and then nest latter under 'Media contributed by NCF' BUT the image gallery of our (SS and TRSR) so far 280+ pooled images does not appear automatically in the higher level category pages NCF photos and Media contributed.... How to get the gallery to show?"

I think this is because the categories have gotten nested, but the actual images have not been "categorised" into these categories we created. For instance, each media upload has to be categoried under Category:NCF photos. What is (for me) unclear still is if the higher category Category:Media contributed by NCF will create a gallery automatically or if that will also require each image to be categorised separately. Anyway, let's add category NCF photos to each media upload and see what happens. After trying out, we need to write out instructions for contributors who come to the wikiproject. Prashanthns (talk) 03:18, 12 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes, looks like we have to individually categorise each image into the higher level categories if we want the gallery of images to appear on those pages. At this point, I feel this may not be necessary and it should be OK if we can see the gallery just on the lowest level "NCF photos" page. This means that uploaders will have to select only this category during upload (besides their user and/or species categories). The higher category pages will aggregate and just show the subcategories useful for navigation. If we later want to also tack on the higher level categories to each image so that the gallery appears at the higher levels, we might need a bot or some batch-process way to do it. What say?--Shankar Raman (talk) 04:16, 12 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, turns out that adding higher-level categories to a set of images is easy using the Gadget Cat-a-lot which you can activate in your user preferences (Or click here and follow the instructions). I was able to easily and quickly add a large number of my images to Category:NCF photos by using 'copy to category'. See this page for more details. --Shankar Raman (talk) 16:41, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

OK just added 'NCF photos' as a category for the relevant images which I had uploaded so far. Hoping to upload few more tonight. Now I want to add a a subcategory Photos by Jegan and then nest it in the 'NCF photos' page. PJeganathan (talk) 16:56, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Other relevant content to this page edit

We now have some initial content up. Not sure what needs to go under "Requests" or "Status". Do we need those heads now? Should we suggest a list of pages instead that one can work on improving with content uploaded under this WikiProject? Such as Human–wildlife conflict List of birds of India Deforestation in India Environmental issues in India etc?--Shankar Raman (talk) 09:40, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Nice one. I think we should have such a list. Or if need be, mirror a list from a similar Wikiproject on Wikipedia? Prashanthns (talk) 13:07, 16 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Further steps edit

A few thoughts on further steps:

  • Should we revise the WikiProject definition box at the top of the page, to clarify better what this is about? Taking from 'Overview' section and scope.
  • Is it possible to add a small slideshow or something to occupy the blank area to the right side of the contents box? Maybe showcase some media?
  • Shall we send out an announcement to other potential participants/contributors/institutions on Wikipedia/Wikimedia and elsewhere about this WikiProject to pull more people/organisations in? Or do we still need to clarify some sections and maybe get started on a couple of adopted pages before we do this?-- Shankar Raman (talk) 08:50, 27 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. I will take these 3 into the tasks page. Feel free to dump some templates/models from which we can borrow ideas. Prashanthns (talk) 04:07, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Categories "Media contributed by NCF" problems and gallery in category of categories edit

Per User:Shankar Raman mail, it seems User:Auntof6 has stripped off the Category:Media contributed by NCF using cat-a-lot from every image that had this category. And then also edited the Category page so that no gallery is visible on this page now. I believe the reason for the latter could be something to do with a guideline on not having galleries on category of categories (as is the case in several sub-categories that are there in our project). I have raised this with the editor here. Hope this gets sorted soon. Prashanthns (talk) 05:33, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I have replied on my talk page. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:36, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think this is where using hidden categories helps - Help:Category#Hidden_categories - these are categories used for purposes that do not serve a public classification need which is what categories were primarily designed for. Hopefully hidden categories should be ignored by Commons admins. Shyamal L. (talk) 06:54, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oops! Thanks Shyamal. I just assumed these were hidden. There is no public purpose (only project purpose) for this category. Will do that ASAP. Prashanthns (talk) 05:26, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Shyamal Prashanthns Auntof6 for your patience and suggestions. I have now made the Category page and the three main NCF sub-category pages as hidden categories. The relevant files have been re-categorised using cat-a-lot. I trust this settles the issue for now. Shankar Raman (talk) 15:29, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Help with species identification of WikiProject contributed images edit

Hi Prashanthns, Shyamal, PJeganathan, Jeevan Jose, Suhel Quader, Harikrishnan S, SS,
I wonder if we can use this talk page or a separate page to seek help to identify species in images/media contributed to Commons and connected to this WikiProject. For instance, I would greatly appreciate help in identification of the following recent uploads I made:

Gecko DSC 6409

Hanging caterpillar DSC 5716

Mating dragonflies DSC 6600 - Orthetrum sabina Jee 17:36, 7 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Images needed: birds of India edit

Hi WikiProject participants: For Indian birds, a list of species pages on Wikipedia that require images has been posted by Shyamal here: List of birds of India talk page. Do check and see if you can contributed any of the required images and add them to the relevant pages. Cheers, Shankar Raman (talk) 02:40, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Template for WikiProject Nature and conservation in India edit

Shankar Raman, Shyamal, Swati Sidhu Prashanthns - Thought it would be nice to have a Template icon for this wikiproject - like we have of wikiproject birds, lepidoptera and many others. How do we go about this? PJeganathan (talk) 22:00, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

You probably mean something that can be added using {{WikiProject ...}} which expands to show some other text magically? Shyamal L. (talk) 04:21, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well I meant a userbox - something like User WPLepidoptera it is possible here in wiki commons?--Jegan 17:33, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
Something like this you mean? Seems possible at least here as a test. Can be created at a Commons location like Template: User WPNCI for the WikiProject. Yes? Should I do this?--Shankar Raman (talk) 05:40, 10 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, would be great to have this. But wondering if the icon could represent both Nature and Conservation. Thanks--Jegan 18:29, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Can you @PJeganathan, Shyamal, and Prashanthns: check and see if this is okay as a nature+conservation userbox for the WikiProject or would you prefer/recommend something else? Cheers, --Shankar Raman (talk) 16:21, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Nice, but how about a collage of different taxa?--Jegan 06:33, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
Could work @PJeganathan: but if you use collage of, say, 4 images, they will all be tiny in that thumbnail and wonder if they will even be visible? Want to give it a try and make a collage? Or just upload a better image or choose a better one from those available?--Shankar Raman (talk) 06:59, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Images needed; amphibians and reptiles edit

We need a lot of images for the recent lists created and the related Wikipedia pages: Amphibians of Kerala, Reptiles of Kerala. Thanks for all the beautiful photos! Jee 10:49, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hari, Swati, David Raju, Rohit N are the best people I can think of to help with this. Emailing them as well on this separately. User:Jkadavoor saw Odonata of Kerala page. Amazing stuff --Jegan 07:36, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the links. David's pictures were already used. I found some more pictures in Hari, Swathi and Rohit's uploads. I did some categorization too. Many images still require species level categorization and without it, it is difficult to find images. I think this is one more thing we need to concentrate into. Jee 09:39, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Agree, User:Jkadavoor, Hari, Swati, David Raju, Rohit N We should add relevant categories, at the least Latin name, where known. Best to do this during upload itself, but is there a way to see/list WikiProject images in need of further categorisation? Also, we could add the Amphibians of Kerala, Reptiles of Kerala pages here: Pages adopted by Wikiproject for improvement using media/content.--Shankar Raman (talk) 03:14, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Shankar Raman; I added those pages to Pages adopted by Wikiproject for improvement using media/content. If we open any category like Category:Photos by Rohit N, Category:NCF photos or Category:WikiProject Nature and conservation in India in COM:VFC, the uncategorised files will be marked as U. Mammals of Kerala edit

I just finished compiling Mammals of Kerala. Thanks for all the images. We still need images of some organisms. Jee 16:11, 29 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Importing your iNaturalist uploads edit

Do any of you have experience with importing your own uploads to iNaturalist? Any experience with https://wikilovesinat.netlify.app/ Prashanthns (talk) 15:35, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

I think the code is broken after iNaturalist images urls moved to a content delivery site, but it is helpful to identify image availability. Shyamal L. (talk) 15:42, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
What do you Prashanthns mean importing uploads to iNaturalist? You mean from your uploads in iNaturalist to Commons? If so, I have used iNaturalist2Commons which works via the (species) Category pages. It does not show only your uploads but all files in iNat with the relevant license in that (species) Category. Shankar Raman (talk) 10:56, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Shyamal & Sridhar. I have basically systematically uploaded a large number of my images from 2003 onwards onto iNat. They now number over a 1000. I would like a tool that allows me to batch-transfer along with the metadata from iNat to Commons. Currently there appears to be no such tool? Prashanthns (talk) 09:37, 27 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Shyamal Prashanthns No such tool for bulk import as far as I know. Shankar Raman (talk) 05:34, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I am not sure bulk copying may be that helpful either. Shyamal L. (talk) 09:33, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
