Dans les deux cas, les surfaces jaune et verte (schématisant deux milieux différents ; par exemple la savane et la forêt) sont semblables, mais la longueur de l'écotone qui les sépare varie selon les cas. Remarque concernant les impacts du "pattern" sur la percolation de certaines espèces dans le paysage : dans les figures 3 et 4 des espèces spécifiques du milieu A ou B ne peuvent respectivement passer d'une "tache" à l'autre de la même couleur qu'en 2 points (cas n°3) ou en un seul point (goulot d'étranglement dans le cas n° 4)) alors que dans les figures 1 et 2, chaque tache reste non fragmentée (par rapport à la surface considérée)
English: Schematic representation of different types of ecotones on a square surface. In both cases, yellow and green surfaces (schematically two different ecological habitats, eg the savannah and forest) are similar, but the length of the ecotone between them varies greatly from case to case.
