Description

Špilja Vranjača, also known as Vranjača Cave, is a fascinating cave located in the picturesque surroundings near the village of Dugopolje in the Croatian county of Split-Dalmatia. The cave system stretches over several levels and offers visitors a breathtaking backdrop of impressive geological formations. The total length of the cave is about 360 metres, part of which is accessible to visitors. The maximum height of the cave reaches about 35 metres, revealing an impressive vertical dimension of the underground environment. The average temperature in Špilja Vranjača is around 15 °C all year round, which helps to keep the cave pleasantly cool and allows visitors to explore it comfortably.

The Vranjača Cave is particularly famous for its extraordinary stalactite formations, which include stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other impressive calcareous deposits. The surreal shapes and structures formed over centuries give the cave a mysterious and fascinating atmosphere. What makes Špilja Vranjača additionally exciting is its rich history, which dates back to the Neolithic period. Archaeological finds inside the cave prove a long human presence. Tools, bones and other artefacts have been discovered, indicating that the cave was used by people as a shelter or possibly for ritual purposes. These finds shed light on past societies and their relationship with the cave as part of their way of life. The protection and preservation of Špilja Vranjača are of great importance in order to preserve the unique geological formations and the fragile cave environment. Access to the cave is therefore controlled and guided tours are offered to limit the number of visitors and ensure that the sensitive formations are not disturbed.
