Description |
English: A group of Zanzibar ladies who coaled the 'Agamemnon' An albumen print depicting a posed group of women and girls, some holding shovels. The print is inscribed ‘'Agamemnon' returned to Malta Nov. 1889’. HMS 'Agamemnon' was employed in a similar role to that previously fulfilled by HMS 'London'. Its small boats were used for patrolling while it remained at Zanzibar as a depot and supply vessel, as well as a holding station for slaves rescued from dhows prior to their release. It is unknown how many, if any, of those set free in Zanzibar found their way home. Domestic slavery was not abolished in Zanzibar until 1911. |
