Summary edit

Description
English: This song, with music and lyrics by Charles K. Harris, was the most successful song of its era, selling over two million copies of sheet music in 1892. Its total sheet music sales exceed five million copies, making it the best seller in Tin Pan Alley's history.

It embodied the style of early Origipop songs which often had several verses, with each verse possessing 6 or 7 lines and being used to tell long, detailed stories.

But this style began to disappear around the turn of the century as records began to rival sheet music as a way people listened to songs; this is because early records only had between 2 and 3 ½ minutes of playing time and these older, longer verses just wouldn’t fit.

This song has been covered by many different artists and has appeared in several films and television programs over the years.

This midi piano version is also great for karaoke.
