| Description |
English: Alton Towers station (remains), 1990. View westward, towards Cheddleton, Leek, North Rode (and Macclesfield): ex-North Stafford Uttoxeter - North Rode (Churnet Valley) line. This station (plain 'Alton' until 1/54) was closed from 4/1/65, through passenger services North Rode - Uttoxeter ceased from 7/11/60 (goods North Rode - Leek 15/6/64), but workers' trains Leek - Oakamoor continued until most of the rest of the line closed on 4/1/65. However, Leek Brook Junction - Oakamoor remained intact for sand traffic untl 30/8/88 and on this stretch Cheddleton station was acquired by the Churnet Valley (heritage) Railway on 20/3/95. They have reopened the line to Kingsley & Froghall in stages, also the Caldon Lowe branch, and have ambitious further plans which may well include Alton Towers - with the attractions of its extensive Theme Park. Here the latter station is seen as renovated for holiday accommodation by the Landmark Trust. |
