Français : Bloc de grès taillé d'origine gallo-romaine.L'archéologue Émile Linckenheld (1880-1976) relate la découverte en 1880 de fragments d'une sculpture d'un cavalier lors de la construction d'une voie de chemin de fer. L'emplacement exact de la découverte se situe entre Carling et les premiers chemins conduisant à la forêt domaniale de Rondheidgen (à l'extrémité du chemin du Nord et à l'entrée de la forêt). Émile Linckenheld rapporte que la tête de cheval de cet ensemble sculpté fut conservée par le Dr. Laubenheimer de Metz, maître d'œuvre du Conseil d'inspection de fonctionnement des chemins de fer d'Alsace-Lorraine (la Reichseisenbahn in Elsass-Lothringen). Le monument était constitué par une colonne surmontée d'un cavalier porté, lui et sa monture, par un monstre Anguipède, de type "colonne de Merten (Moselle)". L'ensemble représentait selon Émile Linckenheld, le dieu solaire ou le dieu celtique de la foudre Taranis à cheval, assimilé à Jupiter. Il nomme cet ensemble sculpté Cavalier au Géant et rapproche cette découverte à d'autres monuments similaires connus dans la région. Il précise que "...ces monuments ont presque toujours été trouvés dans des ruines de "fermes gallo-romaines", ce qui témoigne d'une occupation très antique du lieu. Ce bloc semble constituer le socle carré de l'ensemble sculpté formé par le cavalier. |
