Nederlands: Braziliaans dorpOp 23 januari 1637 kwam de nieuwe gouverneur-generaal van Nederlands Brazilië, Johan Maurits graaf van Nassau-Siegen, aan in de op Portugal veroverde kolonie. De schilder Frans Post was in persoonlijke dienst van Johan Maurits meegereisd - in gezelschap van andere kunstenaars en wetenschappers. De gouverneur-generaal vertrok in 1644 naar Den Haag, waar hij zijn intrek nam in zijn stadspaleis dat spottend ook wel ‘het suikerhuis’ werd genoemd. Ook Frans Post keerde in 1644 terug in Nederland, waar hij zich bezig hield met de illustraties van Barlaeus’ boek over Brazilië. Veel in Brazilië gemaakte schetsen werkte Frans Post na terugkeer uit tot schilderijen.
