Notes
  • Significance: The ADC Readiness Area at Travis Air Force Base (AFB) offers an extremely coherent cluster of buildings and structures. It occupies a segregated site on the base and is easily recognized as a readiness area supportive of a Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS) alert hangar. The cluster possesses a stong quality of time and place, with few exterior modifications to its buildings and no site infill post-1960. Of the installations surveyed for Air Materiel Command (AMC) by Geo-Marine during 1995-96, only this readiness area maintains its historic coherence. The ADC readiness area is physically, and in terms of its Cold War mission, complementary to the presence of the Stragic Air Comman (SAC) bomber and tanker compounds (Buildings 810 and 1175) of the same period at Travis AFB. The readiness area, including Building 1204, is interpreted as potentially eligible under Criterion C, as an excellent example of the programmatic ADC readiness area, built in a standardized configuration throughout the United States and at selected installations, of highly tactical role in U.S. Air Force air defense during the 1950s. The ADC readiness area is also interpreted as eligible under Criteria Consideration G, for demonstration of exceptional significance for properties less than 50 years in age.
