For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.
Fjällrinder ADN-ZB Bartocha 17.3.76-Bu Bez. Neubrandenburg-Mitten im Winter, bei Frost und Eis sind im Naturschutzgebiet "Ostufer der Müritz" Rinder auf der Weide anzutreffen. Es sind die sehr genügsamen Fjällrinder aus Skandinavien. Sie wurden vom Berliner Tierpark zur Verfügung gestellt. Ihre Aufgabe ist, die wertvollen Wacholderbaumbestände in diesem Gebiet zu erhalten. Wacholder ist nämlich eine stark lichtliebende Pflanze, die von den schnellwachsenden Birken und Kiefern unterdrückt wird. Die 18 (18) Tiere starke Herde, die sich im Vorjahr durch einen Nachwuschs von 4 (4) Kälbern vergrößerte, bewährt sich damit als Vertilger dieser hier schädlichen Baumgewächse, bevor sie aufwachsen. Nur im Winter ist eine tägliche Zufütterung von Kraftfuttergemisch mit Heu erforderlich.
