| Description |
English: Carlisle station, 1986. View NW on Platform 4, towards Glasgow, Edinburgh etc. Carlisle Citadel is a major junction on the WCML, here it is the northern extremity of the London & North Western Railway from London Euston, Birmingham etc., etc. The Station was owned jointly with the Caledonian Railway (to Glasgow and Edinburgh), but accepted trains of the Midland, North Eastern and Maryport & Carlisle Railways at its south end and those of the Glasgow & South Western and North British Railways from the north. After Nationalisation in 1948 it was in the BR/LMR. The WCML northward from Weaver Junction (Cheshire) to Glasgow (via Carstairs) was electrified in 1974, but here is seen a Diesel (Class 47 No. 47422) on an express for the ex-Midland line via Settle to Hull via Leeds. |
