Notes
  • Significance: The establishment of the Colonial Parkway in the 1930s made the historic sites at Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown more accessible to the ever expanding motor public. The parkway's designers, through the use of a curved three-lane road with an exposed aggregate surface, intended this highway to serve not only as a means for visitors to enjoy the park but also to limit the speed and numbers of vehicles on the road itself. The parkway's bridges and tunnel, all relatively small and sparsely ornamented, reflect the desire of the planners for these structures to complement the natural environment of the Colonial National Historical Park.
