Notes
  • Significance: When his father died in 1953, Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, returned to Plains to run the family peanut business. After making less that $200 profit during a difficult first year, they expanded the business until it averaged $2.5 million annually. Carter's youngest brother, Billy, purchased 15 percent of the business after he returned from the U.S. Marine Corps, and oversaw its management as Jimmy became more involved in politics. The company was put into a blind trust when Jimmy Carter became U.S. President. Following his presidency, the Carters sold it for about $1.2 million.
