  • Significance: The Overlook Shelter, built in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, is located in the Columbia Gorge and sits atop a flat knoll above the Columbia River overlooking the Bonneville Dam. The shelter is a large community kitchen and rest room building done in the Rustic Cascadian style found throughout the Pacific Northwest. The main portion of the building is the large kitchen room, across which runs a large porch which projects out on both sides. On the south side of the building is a square wing which houses the bathrooms. The porch, which overlooks the river, has a flagstone floor and is covered by the kitchen's cedar shingled roof, supported by large stone pillars. Decorative carved log trusses support the roof. The kitchen room has a large double door flanked by a pair of windows, and two more large windows on either side of the room. Carved trusses similar to the porch trusses support the roof. Directly through the doorway on the south wall is a large fireplace made of coursed squared stone, with built in seats on either side. On the south side of the kitchen is the bathroom wing, also covered with a cedar shingled roof. The exterior walls are stone up to the window level, followed by board and batten siding. The structure will undergo a restoration by the Forest Service in the summer of 1994, as part of a restoration workshop.
